Dr. Elise Fallucco:

Welcome back to psyched for paeds, the child mental health podcast for pediatric clinicians, helping you help kids. I'm your host, Dr. Elise Fallucco. child psychiatrist. And mom. So it is officially the new year, 2024, and I hope you all had some time off. To rest and relax and reset. And that you're feeling energized for the new year. For those of you like myself who have found that it's been a little bit hard to get your brain going after a winter break, we thought that we would start off this new year. With a little bit of a fun episode. In line with the golden globe awards, we decided that the academy of psyched for paeds would come out with their own five. Golden psyched for paeds awards. Out of the 26 episodes that were launched weekly in 2023, we've come up with five unique awards. Including host's choice and people's choice. The first award is for best podcast ensemble. And this award goes to the most popular episode, featuring a group of hosts and the winner is. Episode 10 time saving tips for managing mental health and primary care with doctors, Wendy supple ski. Kim Delporto and Chanley Dudley. And this episode was chosen because these primary care pediatricians who have been dealing with mental health problems for many decades, between the three of them really validated the challenges that many of us face in taking care of kids and teens with mental health problems. And in addition to that during this conversation, We really talked about strategies for practical things you can do. To address the volume and the complexity of many of these cases. Including tips about scheduling appointments, streamlining interviews, and even how to document and chart in a more efficient way. iF you haven't already listened, please check out episode 10 time-saving tips for managing mental health in primary care. The next award goes to best short episode. The nominees in the category for best short episode included those episodes that were around 10 minutes in length, but contained a great deal of information. Helpful and practical strategies. And the winner of the best short episode, 2023 goes to actually the most recent episode, 26 weighty conversations with parents, the yes, and approach with Dr. Peggy Greco. And in episode 26. Dr. Peggy Greco and I tackle difficult conversations. That we often have with parents. While the framework was about talking with parents about weight and health. I think a lot of the principles apply to other subjects as well. And Dr. Peggy Greco is. q, fantastic guest and really is my go-to person when I'm facing my own difficult and challenging conversations, whether it's with parents, patients, family members, friends, whoever. She always has a very thoughtful approach. So I'd encourage you to take a listen to that one. And there'll be links to all of these episodes on our web page at psyched. The number four paeds.com. And I'll also share them in our weekly email that goes out to our subscribers. The next award is for these super science episode. And the nominees of this award featured episodes with highly complex scientific topics and subjects that we really tried to digest to make simple and practical. And the winner of these super science award goes to. Episode number seven, what causes autism and why? Genetic testing is so important with Dr. John Constantino.

This episode really forced me to brush up my knowledge on genetics and to do a lot of research before, during, and after the release of this particular episode so that I could personally better understand more information about the genetic risk of autism. And Dr. John Constantino did a really great job of breaking down the concepts of poly genic risk for autism to Novo and germline mutations. And most importantly, the practical implications for understanding genetic testing in kids with autism and practical implications for their family members.

Dr. Elise Fallucco:

We have two more awards to give out. This next award. It's a little bit of a host's choice award. So this award is for the podcast that really taught me the most. On a personal level. And this is for an episode that I really wish that I had recorded years and years ago, or at least had known. When my own kids were little. And this award goes to episode 20, which is what causes temper tantrums in preschool aged kids with Dr. Joyce Harrison. And in this episode, Dr. Harrison shares a differential diagnosis approach to thinking through a kid's temper tantrums and deciding whether they're normal versus pathologic, and then how to ask the right questions, using a specific framework to determine what in particular could be causing the tantrum. And if there's something we need to be doing to identify and. Intervene. And finally our last. Award is the people's choice award. The people's choice award goes to the episode, which is the most popular. As measured by the total number of downloads. For 2023. And for those of you who have had the pleasure to listen to this, you will not be surprised, but the. The winner is. Number five anxiety meds, which to choose with Dr. John walkup. Yeah. So Dr. Walkup is another fantastic guest who shared very important statistics and information. About the benefits of medication versus therapy when it comes to treatment for anxiety. And he really challenged some traditional wisdom that many people have about when we should think about starting medications. Dr. John walkup is incredibly knowledgeable, but also very funny and shared some stories and practical tips for thinking about. When and how to prescribe as well as when and how to get somebody off of medication. So for all of these episodes, if you've not yet listened, I'd really encourage you to. To check them out. And thank you again for tuning in. Look forward. To joining you as we record another season. Of psyched for peeds, the child mental health podcasts for pediatric clinicians.
