Speaker 1:

Hello and welcome to the Better Budgeting Podcast. I'm your host, danielle Reese. I'm a money coach and the founder of the Better Budgeting Playbook, and this is my one-on-one coaching program for women and couples who have been trying to figure out their finances, finally create a clear plan so they don't have to worry about waiting on payday anymore. I became a money coach in 2020 after paying off over $60,000 in debt, rekindling my marriage, becoming financially free and wanting others to experience the same. If you'd like to work with me, you can check out the link in the show notes there. Also, we have the Financial Freedom Society on Facebook. It's a free Facebook community focusing on debt payoff, saving strategies, budgeting and money mindset. You can find the link to that community in the show notes as well. Kendall, do you want to say hello? Hi? Would you like to say anything else? I would say I hope you have a good day. I hope you have a good day, right. All right, let's get into today's episode. Can you believe that we are in October already? That is insane to me. We are in October. October, like, the leaves are starting to change colors and fall and we are talking about soups and chilies and you know all the good things of fall. I love it, but, holy cow, did this year fly by right? And as a reminder, until October 20, I have a promo going on right now in the better budgeting playbook that you can start coaching in the month of October for only $100. So $100 deposit and you are off to the races. We are doing budgeting, we are doing money mindset, we are doing a debt payoff and we are doing savings. We are getting you started right away out of the gate. I usually do this promo for Black Friday, but I wanted you all to get a jump start. I want you to get enough under your belt in October and November so that when the holiday season comes, you are like ready. Okay, you are ready, you've got some money in the bank. You've got a budget for Christmas. For the first time, we are not going into debt for Christmas, and that's why I am releasing this so early. So all you got to do is go over to the show notes, click on applying to the Better Budgeting Playbook and you and I will have just a quick 30-minute Zoom meeting. Talk about your finances, what you've been doing, what do you want it to be like, what's not working out, what have you tried and then, if I feel like I can help you with coaching, then we will talk about what that looks like. So that promo runs until October 20th. So you got to sign up, you got to have a meeting with me and you got to make your first payment of $100 by October 20th to snag that deal. All right.

Speaker 1:

Today's episode is when things no longer bring you joy, specifically your job. So I had a couple of clients this past week that they want to leave their job, but the issue is the finances. Right, have you ever been in a position where you're in a job and you just really don't like this job anymore, or you want to do something different with your life, but you can't leave because of the finances? Oh, my goodness, I remember when I wanted to leave my job and I was thinking that I'm never going to be able to afford to leave my job. I'm never going to build a business big enough to be able to replace my income, and I just want you all to know you definitely can. People are selling sticks to chop their feces in the toilet Like. You can make a business out of anything, girlfriend, with that. Let's just say that you're in a job and you really don't like it and you want to be able to switch jobs.

Speaker 1:

I have kind of like a little checklist that I go over with clients that I'm going to share with you, and one being having an emergency fund. This is really, really important If you get yourself in a position where you just don't like in a job and you need to get out immediately. Having an emergency fund allows you to pay yourself a paycheck, essentially pull from your savings what your paycheck was worth until you get a new job. This is also in case that you ever lose a job, right Like if you lose a job. We want an emergency fund in place, at least with one to three weeks of pay to cushion between jobs. And that was my second thing I'm going to mention about your emergency fund. So number two is we want to have one to three weeks of pay saved, because if you are planning to move a job and you have no idea what their pay schedule is like and you can ask these questions to HR after the interview process is done you've signed the letter, you're ready to go, you're like, hey, when is the next pay structure scheduled? And they say, oh, it's gonna be two weeks from now, so it'll be about three weeks until you get a paycheck. You need to have three weeks of savings in that paycheck. Now, that's the safe side, because if you finish one job and you go to the next, you have a gap that is like one to three weeks of no pay, where maybe your first check from your old job is short one week because you started your new job, and then your second check from your new job is short a week. So there's two weeks that you're short of pay. You need to be able to have money in the savings account to survive during this time frame.

Speaker 1:

Okay, so there's a couple of the tactical things for you. But like, let's say, you're in this job and you emotionally, mentally or physically can't handle it. There is just no way. But you keep doing it because of the paycheck. Or maybe you have created such a great income, however, your debt payments and your expenses just in general overtake it. So it feels like you're living paycheck to paycheck. Well, you know you make great income, you're like I'm probably making more money than the rest of my friends, but for some reason I just can't breathe with my finances. I've just I'm stressed all the time. I have a hard time budgeting. I have a hard time saving. We can't seem to get debt paid off. If that is you one, just reach out to me.

Speaker 1:

I love connecting with the people on the podcast that listen. It's so much fun to me to find out where you're from. But connect with me. I really want to know about your situation. I want to be able to help you. So go ahead and in the show notes you can contact me, email or you can apply to the Better Budgeting Playbook and we can start talking about your finances and how to get out of this.

Speaker 1:

Because I'm going to say this and it also goes along with your job you were not born to just live and work Okay, and you are not born to just live, work, pay bills. There has to be some joy in life Joy with a job that you have, joy with the amount of money that you have, joy with how you spend your money. So if a job is not bringing you those things, it's time to go. I don't care if you're making $100,000 a year If your mental, emotional and physical health are at jeopardy for a dollar like come on, get out of here. Don't be doing that. Don't be doing that sister Okay, I shouldn't't even say sister anymore, because there's a lot of men that are listening to this podcast now, which is really exciting. So please do not jeopardize your family, your faith, your physical, your mental, your emotional any of that for a job.

Speaker 1:

There's so many jobs out there around this world that you can find and you can work for. There are so many great companies out there, and let's just not even call it companies, but for. There are so many great companies out there and let's just not even call it companies, but supervisors. There's so many great supervisors out there. There's no reason for you to stay at a job that you're not valued at because of the money. All right, you can always go find a new job that fits a better schedule, a better work-life balance, a better health. You know balance, just physical balance, a better health. You know balance, just physical health, mental, emotional health, all of those things and you can counter offer for sure Go in there with confidence.

Speaker 1:

Hey, I was making $85,000 doing these tasks. This is the value that I brought to the company. These are the values that I think I could bring to your company. I want 95. I want 100 grand. Go for it, friend, go for it. Go off, Tell people your value and your worth. Stop sticking at places that no longer value you, no longer respect boundaries. You don't need that. Okay, you don't need that. And to make the transition easier, I'm going to go back to what I said earlier get some money in the bank. Get some money in the bank and if you are having trouble with that, reach out to me. I would love to help you. I love connecting with this audience so much.

Speaker 1:

First thing is to send us a message. It's an anonymous message, so you just go ahead and type in whatever questions you have, whatever feedback you have, and I'll answer it live on the next episode recording that we have. But don't go about this alone. That's the point I'm trying to get to you. Don't go about this alone. So, now that I've prepared you and I told you hey, get some money in the bank account so that you can leave a job at any given point that you're ready to leave a job at, and I shared with you that you don't need to stay at jobs that don't treat you well. You don't need to do that. That's not normal. All right, we were brought into this world to live freely and abundantly. It is not okay to be living with financial, emotional, physical stress from a job. No way, absolutely not.

Speaker 1:

So now I wanna share with you things that you might want to consider when you're switching jobs. You're going to want to consider their benefits package. We know we're leaving this company for sure, but when I go look for a new company, what do I need to look for? All right, consider the benefits package, the health insurance, the dental, the vision, the 401k package all of these things you really really want to become aware of because it is part of your entire compensation package. So if your insurance is 100% covered for your entire family and you don't pay anything out of pocket, but your salary is $12,000 less than the current company that you're at and the current company you have to pay $12,000 out of pocket every single year before anything's covered because of deductibles. Well, listen, it's an even swap. You're just paying way more money into your health insurance at the other job, right? So it feels like you're getting more, but you're really not.

Speaker 1:

So consider the benefits. Um 401k, really really important. Retirement plans are they matching? Do they match at all? What is the max you can contribute with our company? With a match. Do they have an employee stock ownership program? This was a really great sell for companies who were looking to grow their business. So back in 20, I don't know what year gosh, 16. Yeah, 2016. I left my old job to go to another job my first big girl job and they were an ESOP. That's what it's called ESOP, an employee Ownership Program and to this day, literally eight years later, I am still getting paid stocks from that original company. So those are really great companies to work with when it comes to benefit packages.

Speaker 1:

So you really, really want to look deeply into those and ask friends about benefit packages. If you don't know the answer, you need to ask people that do know the answer. You need to start people that do know the answer. You need to start researching these things right. Next thing I would want you to consider in the benefits package is the time off. Is it worth it for you? Are you going to enjoy the work schedule and the time off? And asking the questions how easy is it to have the time off? I have a friend that works for a tax company. They do not take off January through May at all. It's tax season. Is that okay for you? Make sure that this new company is going to align with the values that you have Outside of the benefits package.

Speaker 1:

You want to consider travel. Is this place further away? Are you now going from traveling all over the place to not traveling? Maybe you're remote now. Are you needing to update and spend more money because you need to travel more?

Speaker 1:

The other thing you want to consider is clothing. Do you need to buy a uniform? Do you need to get new clothes for this job? Do you need to get supplies? Another thing is education. Do you need to pay up front for any education costs or background checks or blood samples or urine samples? I guess you're not giving blood samples, but urine samples. All of these are pretty common in the work industry, so do you need to front those things? If you do, those are things you're going to want to consider as, financially, you being responsible before you make a switch.

Speaker 1:

So to recap for you all, I really want you to consider if you are in a position in a job that you just absolutely hate getting up every single morning and dealing with those people. You don't love the thing that you're doing, you're financially stressed, you are just over it. It's time to make a career move. If you are snappy when you get home, if you are just absolutely can't wait till Friday type of person and dread that Sunday night scaries, it is time to leave your job. There is no reason to be staying at that job anymore.

Speaker 1:

If you are in that point, I want you to look at your finances. I want you to look at your emergency fund. See if you can go without a job for a little bit, just to float until you find something better. Or you start searching around and finding something better and have enough in the emergency fund so that when you stop one job and you start the next, you don't have any lapse in income. When you're looking for a new job, I want you to consider the benefits package. I want you to really dig in to see if this is going to be a good fit.

Speaker 1:

You might need to switch careers completely. You might have to do that to bring joy back into your life because I'm telling you a hundred percent, if you enjoy where you spend 40 plus hours a week at, you are not going to be grumpy, you are not going to be financially stressed. You're not going to be just absolutely a monster. If you enjoy your job and you can come home and leave work at work. If you can learn to do that and you can be in a position where you can do that, you are going to be so much better off. And these are all the things that I was telling my clients this week and I thought, oh my goodness, this would be a really great podcast episode. So here it is All right. Friends, thanks so much for listening. I really appreciate you and we'll talk soon. Take care.
