This is the Good Neighbor Podcast, north Atlanta, where local businesses and neighbors come together. Here's your host, stacey Risley. Hello, friends and neighbors, welcome to North Atlanta's Good Neighbor Podcast. Today we are back in the studio with Terri Easton. She is a licensed esthetician and the owner of Atlanta Acne Specialist and she has two locations, one in Decatur and one in Sandy Springs. But like so close to Dunwoody you could throw a rock to it. So Springs slash Dunwoody. We're really happy to have you back.
Speaker 1:Terry also is the expert contributor for her industry for the publication Dunwoody Neighbors, and she is back with us today to talk about an article that is in our current issues, our November issues, and it is about vitamin C and acne and I think vitamin C has kind of become a little bit of a buzz word in the beauty industry, you know, in the last few years, and I know I've heard it a lot more lately than than than years past, and you're here to talk to us about how it it applies to acne and how it can help. So I'm excited that you were able to share this article with us and that you're willing to come and share with our listeners as well. So let you take that away.
Speaker 2:Yeah, vitamin C is a really powerful antioxidant, brightener, anti-ager, and we like it in conjunction. We don't use it as a preventative for stopping acne, but once the skin's clear it really helps with resolving dark marks and post-inflammatory erythema, which is the redness leftover from breakouts, and it's a really great segue into anti-aging skincare once the skin's clear.
Speaker 1:Yeah, because I have started using it before, like you said, for anti-aging. So I love when you said in the article it was a powerhouse, this powerhouse vitamin you know, has lots of multi-purposes and good for all of us with all different types of skin types to use.
Speaker 1:So one of the first reasons and I love that you provide the science the very first part of her article, if you're listening starts with the science behind vitamin C and acne, and I love that. I love science. You know, based, evidence based medicine and we're getting into. Let us know, Tell me why it works, because that's always what I want to know and then sometimes that sells me and is completely changing everything.
Speaker 2:Vitamin C is just like I said it's a great powerhouse antioxidant. So antioxidants give one of their extra, you know, and I'm going to mess up the actual science electrons to a free radical. That is missing. So that's how it kind of reduces that anti-aging or reduces aging. Our formula has two forms of vitamin C sodium ascorbyl phosphate and ethyl ascorbic acid. So it's a little bit more stable. And what I've learned is sometimes the stronger vitamin C's are not as stable as the the less strong, let's say, and depending on what kind of base it's in, it could be in an alcohol base and it could be a little bit more drying and aggravating for the skin. So formula is definitely important. But, yeah, not only does it reduce inflammation, it stimulates collagen and the proteins that create the collagen. Like I said, it's fighting those free radicals, brightening dark spots, reducing inflammation, like it's just so great at calming the skin, and even some of the ingredients in our formula actually do some hydrating as well.
Speaker 1:Okay, and for those of you who are listening and don't know, at Atlanta Acne Specialists you can purchase and get the tailored skincare treatment that's best for your particular acne prone skin. And so when I'm assuming, terry, that you're able to get vitamin C through Atlanta acne specialists as well, yes, yeah, we have our own private line that we I didn't formulate the line.
Speaker 2:I worked with the lab to investigate the ingredients to make sure that it doesn't have poor clogging ingredients and it does have the active ingredients that we want in there to fight acne pore clogging ingredients and it does have the active ingredients that we want in there to fight acne. And then a colleague of mine has custom formulated some of the products that we use and our vitamin C is one of those. So it's a really great formula and, even though it's not a strong vitamin C, like I said, it's a lot more stable and it has some extra ingredients like the peptides and mushroom extract that are going to be calming and hydrating for the skin. And so, yes, if somebody is interested in clearing their skin and or improving, they can reach out to us and schedule a consultation and we'd be to customize a routine for them.
Speaker 1:Awesome and because it really is, like you said, the powerhouse of the vitamins and all the antioxidants and I didn't realize, you know, I knew that for my purposes, that it could be used and was very effective with anti-aging and some of that, you know, clearing your skin tone, but not necessarily acne related, but because I have dark pigmentation, things like you know, like that, and that has been, I've started using it and I'm seeing a huge difference and then when you really think about applying that towards acne, it does help. All of the same things you know. I mean, especially like this scarring. I know that in the article you talked about that sometimes it can the redness can be mistaken for scarring and it's not actual scarring, but the vitamins works to help help with that. So a lot of really great uses and it makes sense that it would also be applicable to acne. So I know I'm happy to hear it.
Speaker 2:It's a really great product for all skin anti-aging and acne but it's a really great conjunction type of product that can work for both.
Speaker 1:Yeah, and then you said so, do you? I know that you said that yours has some moisturizing agents included in that, but then do you recommend also having a moisturizer to use with that, or is it enough moisture?
Speaker 2:Yeah, I love that. It does have some moisturizing ingredients in it, so it's not going to be super drying to the skin. But it wouldn't be enough to not need a moisturizer but it wouldn't be enough to to not need a moisturizer.
Speaker 1:OK, well, towards the end of the article you talk about how you help give us guidance on how to incorporate vitamin C serum into our daily routines for skin care. Do you want to touch on how, how to best do that?
Speaker 2:Absolutely so a more sensitive skin might be. This might be too much to start off using right away every single day. So I usually have clients start off every other morning. They'll use one full pump and really massage it into the whole face, get a nice, smooth, even layer all over the face and neck. I actually bring mine down to the chest too. A colleague of mine said her grandmother always says your face stops at your boobs.
Speaker 1:I love that.
Speaker 2:All uniform and I'm sure some of the listeners have seen on Instagram where people use their skincare to their jawline and then their neck really shows their age. So I just bring everything down to my neck and chest when I use it and you know you start off every other morning, then every morning. Consistency is key, so you know you can use one bottle and you'll see result, but when you use it every single morning consistently before your sunscreen, you're going to start to see more and more of a change.
Speaker 1:Wow, and so is that something that with vitamin C I know sometimes you said you have them start every other morning. If it does, if they do have super sensitive skin. Do you find that with vitamin C that it's tolerated by most people? Though if you do build up to it or gradually ease into it, I guess is a better?
Speaker 2:Yeah, absolutely so. Vitamin C is not as active as like a retinol or a vitamin A product is, but it still can be stimulating for some more sensitive skins. So I just always tell people to start off every other morning for two weeks and then then move to every day if they happen to start seeing, you know, some redness or um, I mean, I haven't had anybody have a reaction at all to our product but, um, if they were feeling sensitive, then I would say maybe do two times a week, yeah, and do that for two weeks, and then do three times a week, and so on and so forth yeah, well, and it's great to know that it is widely tolerated.
Speaker 1:I know that I started using it for anti-aging. Haven't had any sort of reaction at all, you know, other than the stuff it's supposed to be doing. Well, terry, thank you so much for being here again with us. I'd look forward to your next article and I'm going to have to get over there to see you at your Dunwoody I almost called it Dunwoody office again Dunwoody slash Sandy Springs office.
