Pastor Barry on mixed use housing and avoiding concentrated poverty.

Over on Field Street, back in 2001 or 2002, another developer came to our community and said, we wanna build high-end townhouses right next to yours. So the townhouses right next to our townhouses are $300,000 and we are affordable and they are right there together. So when your neighbors come, you got these fancy cars pulling up on this side and on the other side is affordable housing. People don't know, but they came and spoke to us on purpose because we are the neighborhood developers and they wanted us to be able to get along. The other thing that we try to tell people, you don't concentrate poverty. That's not a good thing to do, to put it [poverty] in concentration. It's best to actually mix it up somewhat so that young people living in a neighborhood, they can see the people getting up, going to work, doing the different things which motivates them and it kind of makes it a little bit easier if you don't have concentrated areas of poverty.
