Schizophrenia As I Live It (audio)
I discuss navigating the labyrinth of paranoid schizophrenia as a personal and Informative journey.
I'm Diana Dirkby, and I'm living with paranoid schizophrenia. In this podcast, I'll open up about my experiences with this complex brain disorder while also providing a comprehensive overview of schizophrenia itself. Despite sharing common symptoms, each individual's journey with schizophrenia is unique. We all seek tools and strategies to manage our symptoms within the context of our unique lives.
As mental health consumers, we are responsible for sharing our experiences openly and honestly. By doing so, we can help combat the stigma associated with schizophrenia. We can empower listeners to understand what psychosis truly feels like, dispelling the fear and misconceptions that often surround it. While a schizophrenic episode can be an intense and overwhelming experience, it's important to remember that the person experiencing it is usually not a threat to others.
Beyond my experiences with schizophrenia, I'll also share aspects of my life that transcend my mental health condition. This serves as a reminder that mental health consumers are multifaceted individuals, not defined solely by their diagnoses.
My fiction novel, "The Overlife: A Tale of Schizophrenia," is based on a deeply personal exploration of my own experiences and those of my mother. It's available as a Kindle and paperback book (visit https://www.amazon.com/author/diana_dirkby or search for "Diana Dirkby" on Amazon). An audiobook version will be released soon. For more information, please visit my website: https://overliveschizophrenia.com/.
Part 1 of this podcast aired during the prepublication phase of my novel. Now the book has appeared, Part 2 assumes you have access to it. You can still follow along without having read it. However, reading the book will help you understand and appreciate my podcast.
Together, we can break down barriers and promote open conversations about mental health. Thank you for joining me on this journey.

Pain is not a prerequisite for excellent writing. We break down the simple, science-backed moves that turn your workspace into a calm, pain-free launchpad for deep focus: how to set your chair for real lumbar support, where your elbows and feet should land, and the precise monitor height that saves your neck during long drafting days.
We start with a posture that holds without effort, then dial in desk and screen height so your shoulders stop creeping upward, and your eyes stop fighting glare and distance. If you rely on a laptop, you’ll hear exactly how to fix its built-in ergonomic flaws with a riser and an external keyboard and mouse. We get specific about wrist alignment, mouse reach, and the minor adjustments that cut strain before it becomes injury. And because stillness is the enemy, we outline a movement plan you can actually keep: the 20-20-20 eye rule, hourly stand-and-stretch breaks, and quick routines for neck, shoulders, wrists, and chest.
We also share real-world gear that makes these habits effortless. A height-adjustable standing desk solved variable posture and space constraints in a small Alaska office. At the same time, a sturdy, telescopic laptop stand delivered portable control in rooms around a larger Texas home. Both setups prioritize fine-grained height control, stability for heavier laptops, and easy rotation—details that keep your body aligned and your attention on the page. Expect practical, actionable steps and a few trusted product recommendations to help you write longer without paying for it later.
If this helped you rethink your setup, follow the show, share it with a writer who’s constantly rubbing their neck, and leave a quick review. Tell us the one tweak you’ll make today—and what you want us to cover next.

Pastime With Good Company by King Henry VIII, played by The Chestnut Brass Company
Pastime With Good Company, composed by King Henry VIII, played by The Chestnut Brass Company
Hello, I hope you're all enjoying your weekend. Um, this uh episode of my podcast will actually be posted uh both to the affiliate link uh podcast I'm doing and the fractured ink. I know I said I wasn't going to do that anymore, but uh famous last words, best laid plans of mice and men. I just have a podcast which is really suitable for both. So something that's very important for writers to take into account is the ergonomics. How to stay pain-free while writing for hours. A severe problem with the right radial nerve. And uh I have had to find ways around it. So I will give a few of my Amazon affiliate links, often followed by hashtag ad or hashtag commissions earned. As an Amazon associate, I earn from qualifying purchases. As a writer, your desk is your battlefield, your creative sanctuary, and too often your source of aches and pains. Hours spent typing can lead to neck strain, lower back pain, carpal tunnel symptoms, and eye fatigue. The good news proper ergonomics can prevent most of these issues. Ergonomics is simply about arranging your workspace to fit your body, reducing strain, and boosting comfort and productivity. Whether you're drafting a novel, blogging, or freelancing, these practical tips will help you write longer without paying for it later. Start with your chair, the foundation of good posture. Now I uh try as much as possible to stand at my desk. Uh I use a laptop for um a lot of my work, and I I try to stand at my desk. But occasionally, of course, I want to sit down if I need to write by hand. And uh it's really important to have a good chair for that. Your chair is the most crucial piece of furniture. A poor one forces poor posture, a good one supports you naturally. I trust the chair for sale on Amazon. Visit my affiliate link for the Neuhaus Posture Ergonomic PU Leather Office Chair. I say trust as I do not own this chair, as I already have a very similar one. My research leads me to trust this is a good product that I want to connect you with. What do you think? Leave a comment. Adjust the height so your feet rest flat on the floor or on a footrest with knees at roughly 90 degrees. Use lumbar support to maintain your lower backs natural curvature. Keep the things parallel to the floor, keep the thighs, I'm sorry, parallel to parallel to the floor and the hips slightly higher than the knees. Relax your shoulders and keep your arms supported. So I'm going to show uh a few photos here. So we here we have um a photo from UC Davis uh about what is a good posture. Okay. So the head upright and over your shoulders, um, eyes looking slight downward without bending from the neck. The backrest on your chair should support the natural curve of the lower back. Your wrists should be in neutral, straight posture, not bent, because that will give you big problems. Table height, approximately elbow height, elbows bent at 90 degrees, forearms horizontal, shoulders should be relapsed and not raised, thighs horizontal with a 90 degree to 110 degree angle at the hip. Feet supported and flat on the floor. If this isn't possible, then feet should be fully supported by a footrest. So here is um a slightly different uh less detailed uh photo, uh, but still very useful to bear in mind. So for the monitor, adjust the distance height, top of the monitor at eye level and slightly tilted. For the arms, relax shoulders, forearms parallel to the floor, minimal bend at the wrist. For the chair, you should have a back rest and armrests and adjust height. Legs, thighs parallel to the floor, feet parallel to the floor, use a foot rest if necessary.
SPEAKER_00:So I'm gonna go back and share. Okay, I wanted also to share this.
SPEAKER_01:Um it also has uh uh basically the same information as in as in the other two, but uh from a slightly different point of view and it's schematic. Okay, but it really is very similar to the other two.
SPEAKER_00:But I've thrown it in there. Okay.
SPEAKER_01:Get the desk and monitor height right. So this is a second point. Desk height matters just as much as your chair. When typing, elbow should bend at about 90 to 100 degrees with forearms parallel to the floor. Place the monitor so that the top of the scream is at or slightly below eye level. This prevents tilting your head up or down. Keep the scream about an arm's length away, 20 to 40 inches, to reduce eye strain. The classic diagram shows monitor positioning. So again, I'm going to go and share. And this is it's all it's in centimeters, but it gives you a good idea of the uh classic, classic pose.
SPEAKER_00:Okay.
SPEAKER_01:So now I want to come to products that I want to connect you with on Amazon. Uh I trust the chair for sale on Amazon, Ugatron Work Fit TX Standing Desk Converter, and I give the affiliate link in in the episode description. I say trust because I do not own this converter. I needed to find a different solution for my home. I will say more about that at the end. My research leads me to trust this is a good product. What do you think? Leave a comment. Okay, so the next thing uh we're going to talk about is keyboard and mouse placement. Protect your wrists. Repetitive typing is a leading cause of wrist and hand pain for writers. Position the keyboard directly in front of you with wrists straight and neutral, not bent up, down, or sideways. Keep the mouse close so you don't reach. This shows you that if you have to bend your wrist in any way, this is not right. It should be straight as it's working with the mouse. So a special note for uh laptop users. Laptops are convenient but terrible for ergonomics. The screen and keyboard uh are attached. The best fix is use a laptop stand or riser to raise the screen to eye level, then connect an external keyboard and mouse. Here's a solid ergonomic laptop setup, and again, it's it's the uh photo I showed you uh here, this one. Okay, so this is a good setup for a laptop, and this uh brings me to uh my choice of laptop stand that I'll talk about in a minute. Okay, so finally take regular breaks and stretch. Even the perfect setup can't replace movement. Follow the 2020-20 rule. Every 20 minutes look at something twenty feet away for twenty seconds. Stand up, walk around, and do simple stretches hourly. Try these quick ones neck tilts and turns, shoulder rolls, wrist flexes and extensions, chest opens. I want to end with the products I own and use from Amazon that solved my variable desk height and laptop positioning problems. As I have mentioned before, I divide my time between Texas and Alaska. The layout and amount of room I have in the two houses are very different. In Alaska, the house is small with limited furniture. I couldn't spare a table on which to place the Ergotron standing desk inverter. So I decided I needed another table and found the Ergear height adjustable electric standing desk on Amazon. And I'll leave the affiliate link in the episode description. It completely solved the variable desk height problem and provided an extra table. It arrives as a kit that's easy to assemble, although you may need a friend to help turn the table upright during setup. It's 30. What I like most is that you can continuously adjust the height rather than just choosing from a few preset levels.
SPEAKER_00:So I wanted to show you a photo of it.
SPEAKER_01:So there you see um the desk uh in my messy office in Alaska. Okay, and by the way, the light is something, the the desk lamp is something I'm going to devote a whole uh episode to for the affiliate link people. Uh and this uh up and down arrows, that's continuous movement. You can lock it in at four levels if you like, but um I really like the fact that it's it's a continuous up and down that you can adjust for how you're feeling at the time, and you know uh it just has so many more options. So in Texas we have more tables, but I often work in different rooms from my study. The largest device I use is a laptop, so I wanted the control of the height of my laptop that the standing disc gave me in Alaska. I found on Amazon The Nalaxi Telescopic Laptop Stand and I've given the affiliate link in the episode description. Well, the photos tell the story, so uh let me show the uh photos. Okay, so what I found as a solution was uh this laptop laptop stand, since uh um that's what I'm using uh uh most of the time, okay, is my laptop. And the pictures kind of tell the story, it actually comes fully assembled, and at the back you can adjust uh the back so that the two black parts are together, or if you stretch it out, uh you'll see the piece of steel. Um so that gives you that control. You can also vary the height by pressing on the base and pulling. Uh it so this is my laptop, which is rather heavy and um cumbersome, and it fully supports it and is very sturdy, so I don't get any uh rocking or anything like that. So it's really uh a good device, and an it's obviously portable, you know. I can I can take it anywhere I want to into any room and uh um set my laptop up there and adjust the height, so it's ergonomically uh very interesting. So the photos, as I say, tell the story. Uh comes already assembled, you just need to adjust the height to suit yourself. Two ways to vary the height and angle, pulling on top of the stand or on the base. Oh, and I should mention it has a 360-degree turntable. So you can you can turn it around uh 360 degrees, and it's dirty but light to carry. I have a large and heavy laptop, and the laptop stand fully and steadily supports it. What a great idea. So I will leave some references for the photos uh at the bottom of the episode description, and um I hope you will consider following some of the affiliate links uh to see uh to see what you think. And uh don't forget to subscribe, uh, like, uh, unlike, or uh leave a comment. Leaving comments great because I'm learning a lot from the comments. Okay, so enjoy the rest of your weekend and see you soon.
