What if your superpower of “I’ve got it” is the very thing keeping you exhausted? In this episode, I unpack the quiet trap high-achieving women fall into: mistaking capacity for compulsion. We talk about why saying yes feels safer than slowing down, how your body always pays the bill, and the simple filter I use to ensure I don’t lose sight of my defined version of success.

TOPICS & TANGENTS:

• Capacity vs. compulsion: why “I can” isn’t the same as “I should”
• The hidden cost of being capable: energetic and emotional price tags
• “Your body pays the bills”: what over-functioning does to your nervous system
• Discernment as a regulation skill: pause, ask, and act with intention
• My success filter: will this bring me closer to or further from peace
• Breaking the “helpful one” identity without burning everything down
• Micro-habits that create exhale moments instead of more adrenaline
• Real-talk examples from retreats, pods, and everyday life

POINT OF THE STORY:

Strength is not carrying it all. Strength is knowing when to set it down. Just because you can doesn’t mean you should, and trust me… and your nervous system knows the difference.

I feel best and I feel most worthy and loved and valued if I just say yes to everything. Right, but really, our ability to handle it all becomes the very thing that keeps us from peace. This is just my simple loving reminder. Just because you can does not mean you should. It's the ability to stop long enough and go like, but really is this desire to say yes to this or to take over that or to add this, that, and the other thing to my plate. Where does this really come from? What am I trying to prove? What am I trying to earn in this way? Hi, friend, and welcome back to the podcast. I think today's conversation is going to be incredibly important. I think every podcaster says that. Like literally, as that was coming out of my mouth, I was like, shut up, you're lame. And yes, inside my head is a therapist who understands that the things we say become a reality. It's funny when that happens. And it's even funnier because I feel like I will have that negative self-talk that I think all humans do. It's part of the human experience. And I have this like insane level of awareness that it like starts with like, oh my gosh, that's so lame. Shut up. To oh my gosh, that's so unkind. Like inside my head, like I catch it and I instantly I'm like, oh, that's not true. It's not lame. It was you. And then there's this like third version of me that's like, oh my gosh, you're such a nerd. And then of course I'm just thinking, like, could anybody ever imagine being inside of this head? Anyway, I digress. Welcome back to the podcast. Let's start this thing all over. Today I want to talk about not doing everything. Honestly, the concept being like, just because you can doesn't mean you should. Hilar. I think that so often as a high achiever, as a high functioner, surrounded by women who are high functioners, we have a tendency to just do everything. Even if we don't really need to. And I was thinking on a walk the other day, just like pondering this thought, and knew I wanted to bring it to the podcast because, well, because damn it, this is one of the leading reasons why we end up in high-functioning burnout. Yes, I know you. I know that you can handle literally anything. I know this about myself as well. And yet, this idea of capacity versus compulsion, we're gonna get into this, is the problem, right? This quiet trap that so many high-achieving women fall into is mistaking capacity, i.e., I have enough bandwidth, I can absolutely do this. It's not gonna take anything from me, it's not gonna cost me anything. Like I am just, I have so much bandwidth, right? That's the idea for compulsion, which is I feel safest when I'm doing everything. I feel best and I feel most worthy and loved and valued if I just say yes to everything. Right. But really, our ability to handle it all becomes the very thing that keeps us from peace. I hope you hear that. I hope you really hear that. I used to personally think that strength, strength, why is that word so hard? Meant being the person that could figure it out, the one who could carry the load, the one who can find the solution, the one who could hold it all together. It was actually on a retreat recently with my mixer mind crew, which I've been talking a little bit about inside my email and even on the podcast. And I noticed this even in those instances, you know, where it was like she would, she as in Linda would set up these like, okay, you three people go to lunch together and and these little pods that were meant to be very intentional, like there's a reason why you're connecting. Really cool. And I would find myself just, I'll find the place to go. I'll do this, I'll do that, I'll do it. It is just a constant. I've got it is a constant, right? And it works until it doesn't, until you feel exhausted. You feel like I literally have nothing else to give. And or until you realize that people around you are expecting so much from you. And not because their expectations are too high, but you've set the standard and your nervous system from this state of I can do it all can't ever truly just exhale, can't ever truly just relax. Right. So yes, we're capable and we're brilliant and we're deeply self-aware. Right. But we're missing out on the things that we want to enjoy because we're thinking that we have this massive capacity or massive capability. I think it's important to notice, even in this conversation, that being capable or being the one that does it all has both an energetic and an emotional cost.

I always say your body pays your body pays the bills. Right. Period. Your body is gonna pay the bills. So even if your brain is saying, like, it's fine, I've got all the time in the world, I can absolutely do this, you're overriding what your body's limits are. And this is when we end up in like nervous system issues, right? Because then your nervous system thinks, oh, I have to be doing all the time, right? Safety equals doing more. And so then when we finally get that moment to like slow down, and our body goes, literally, I don't know how. Like, what am I supposed to do right now? Seriously, right? It becomes a survival response. And so just make a note of that. Your body is gonna pay the bills, right? You've heard those old sayings. What is that saying? It's like you can choose I'm gonna just butcher the shit out of this sickness now or illness later. You know what I'm trying to say? Oh, it's you can choose illness now or later. I don't remember. I'm hoping somebody's listening and they're like, I get you. I totally get you. And I'm not even gonna edit this out because there's no freaking point. But it's the same with this, right? Like, no matter what, you are paying the bills for all the things that you're saying yes to. You just might not recognize it until it's too late. Right. And it's because of this like false safety that you are leaning on in regards to overfunctioning, right? And we've talked about this before in this podcast, but I'll say it again. Like, oftentimes this comes from the way that we had to earn love or the way that we had to earn belonging or witnessing it in somebody else that was close to us, right? Like being that helper or the achiever, the one who hit all the goals or did all the things or didn't need very much was the one who got all the love, right? And so we find ourselves still doing that. But I think in all of this, one of the most important and and traditionally underrated skills when it comes to having a balanced, steady nervous system is discernment. That's it. It's discernment. And what I mean by that is it's your ability to not just have clarity, right, on what what's gonna work and what's not gonna work in your life, but to act upon it. Right. It's the ability, discernment's the ability to stop long enough and go, like, but really, right? But really is this desire to say yes to this or to take over that or to add this, that, and the other thing to my plate, where does this really come from? What am I trying to prove? What am I trying to earn in this way? Right? Am I reacting? Am I regulating? Am I running on adrenaline? Am I moving from alignment? Like any of these things can be true. But discernment is the ability to stop long enough to really ask the question and listen to the answer and then respond, right? And it's incredibly important. And it's just the simple thought of like, just because you can doesn't mean you should. Just because you can does not mean you should. I know I'm gonna probably bring this up a whole shit ton on this podcast, but that was sort of what helped me decide how I was gonna change all of my business model, including not being on social media anymore. Just because I can doesn't mean I should. Can I post every day? Sure. Can I engage with people on social media? Sure. Should I? Like really, should I? Does that make sense for me? And I apply this to everything. I've again I've talked about this on the podcast before as well, that I utilize my personally identified success criteria as the filter, if you will, to make every decision in my life. Hi, hi, quick interruption. If you're into this conversation, you've got to listen to the episode I do with my longtime friend and former client, Katie Grimes, on her podcast, Anything for Love. We got into all things cycle syncing, how to work with your body instead of against it, why rest feels so damn uncomfortable, and how your hormones can actually become your biggest business advantage. It's packed with practical tools and a lot of truth about what it really means to honor your energy. So go listen to anything for love after this episode. It is such a good one. And so to simplify this and to simplify my decision making, I know for me that the actual feeling of success, of feeling as though I'm successful, is feeling peaceful in my life, not feeling rushed or frantic. And you have to define these things for yourself, right? So peaceful for me might look very different than what peaceful means for any one of you, right? But I feel peace when I'm not frantic, not urgent, not feeling scarcity or any of these kind of things. And so I work to ensure that peace is what I'm leaning towards all day, every day, whether it's in the actions that I take or the habits that I have, or simply by asking myself, if somebody says, Hey, can you do this for me? It's will that thing bring me closer to or further away from peace? That's my filter. Because that's the easiest way for me to identify. No, actually, it sounds like a good idea, but in that one split second, I'm realizing it actually is gonna take peace from me. Right? This is how you preserve your wellness, your success, your happiness, your joy. It's so important. It's so important. In fact, I I've talked a little bit about this and I want to leave the podcast. It's a short and sweet one today. I want to leave the podcast with this. It is the final few days. What is the day this is the final day. This is the actual final day that you can join the mixer mind. And the mixer mind has been my sort of golden ticket to an easeful visibility strategy in my business, a way to be engaged with people without being on social, a way to get my name and my mission out there without having to cold pitch a million people, a way for me to be connected and have community with people who truly get me without feeling like I'm living on freaking entrepreneurial island over here. And so I've loved it so, so, so much, so much so that I was honored to be asked to be a pod leader in the next round. So it means I just have a little bit more of a leadership role in it, which feels very aligned. And it did bring me more peace. It was a hell yes in my barometer for success, which is very exciting. And one thing that I decided to do during this period where a whole new round, in fact, I think a lot of people who joined were rejoiners. And so there's not a whole lot of room for new people, which is exciting. And also like get your booty moving if you want to be a part of this amazing group. But one thing I wanted to do is that anybody who does, in fact, join the mixer mind through my link, which of course is in the show notes, will get a visibility strategy session with me where I'm gonna help you to just map out what your strategy gets to look like in 2026 for visibility specifically, and also share the behind the scenes of how I utilize the mixer mind because it's not, I'm not gonna say it's hard, but I'm gonna say it's not intuitive. It has to be incredibly intentional. And I was very intentional with the time that I carved out for it on a weekly basis, the kind of conversations that I had, the things that I brought forward. And God, I wish that I had somebody to do this with me before I joined the mixer mine. I'm so excited to do it for a second round because now I feel prepared. Honestly, now I feel like I can really get the most out of it because I know what is gonna make sense, what's gonna have an ROI, what's not gonna have an ROI, like what how to do things. You know what I mean? And so I just feel really grateful to be able to do that for somebody else. I mean, that's the point of mentorship, right? Is just to dumb down and simplify something that might be more complicated if I weren't around to help. And so if you use my link in the show notes, I automatically am gonna gift that to you as just a way for us to even get connected and find out how we can support one another in our own visibility strategies. Maybe there's ways that you and I can collaborate as well. So this is just my simple loving reminder. Just because you can does not mean you should. And also join the Mixer Mind. It is a literal no brainer. I hope you have a beautiful day, my friend, and I'll see you on the next episode.
