Bass Reeves, born in 1838, stands as a pivotal figure in American history, known for his extraordinary career as a Deputy U.S. Marshal in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. In an era marked by racial prejudice and lawlessness, Reeves broke through racial barriers as one of the first African Americans to serve as a Deputy U.S. Marshal west of the Mississippi River. Reeves had an insane arrest record of over 3,000 felons, including notorious outlaws, such as Belle Starr and the Dalton Gang. A master of disguise and a tireless enforcer of the law, Reeves' jurisdiction was located in the wild Indian Territory, now part of Oklahoma. His legacy has gained prominence in recent years, symbolizing African American resilience and contributions to the Old West. Today, we dive into the life and accomplishments of Bass Reeves, showcasing his courage, determination, and unwavering commitment to justice during a tumultuous period in American history.
