Hello and welcome back to Holistic Happiness Club.
And today's episode is a
little different, a little subtle.
It is about rest.
How many types of rests are there and
how you can take each of those rest.
Rest is something that we need on a day to
day basis, on a weekly basis, on a monthly basis,
on a yearly basis, and time to time.
But we have very less
knowledge and understanding about rest.
All we think is turning the television set on
or getting drowned in alcohol or getting out.
That is rest.
No, that is not rest.
That might be entertainment, that might be a break,
and that might be some kind of rest.
But that's not entirely true.
Picture is much bigger than it seems to be. Appear.
So in this episode, we will just touch
the surface, scratch the surface about rest.
How many types of rests are there and how one
can take those rest, and when those rests are needed.
But before we get deeper into this
episode, I want to say thank you.
Thank you for tuning into holistic happiness club.
And thanks to each one of you, special thanks
to each one of you who tune into holistic
happiness club each week they devote, you guys devote
your time into holistic happiness club.
And that is the fuel, that is the energy that I get
to keep on going and keep on doing the good work.
So thank you so much for tuning in and giving
time, giving your precious time to holistic happiness club.
And as always, I will try my best
to give you the maximum value of your
time invested in holistic happiness club.
All right, so before, without further
delay, let's get into the topic.
Hi, my name is Akshay Tiwari.
I'm a holistic happiness coach, author of the book
named Usher, and the founder of Holistic Happiness Club.
Holistic Happiness Club is a place where we
talk about happiness in a holistic manner.
We understand that happiness is not a
single faceted thing, it's a multifaceted thing.
And that is why it needs to
be looked at from 360 degree perspective.
We need to look at each
sponge that contributes to happiness.
Our relationship, our finances, our
health, our businesses, our career,
everything contribute to our happiness.
And that is why we talk in 360 degree perspective
in all the directions that contributes to our happiness.
And that is what holistic happiness club is for.
More about holistic Happiness club and about
me in the end of this episode.
But for now, let's enjoy this topic of the day.
All right, so let's begin.
The topic of the day rests and how to rest.
It means how many types of rests are there
and how to take each one of them.
And it is also very important to understand when
you need and why you need those rests. Okay?
So we will just touch base and
we will scratch the surface about rest.
So, first of all, I want to say that people
think that coming from office or from work, from anywhere,
any, anyplace else, and if they are feeling exhausted, first
of all, we need to decipher that.
What is it that is making us feel exhausted?
Is it physical tiredness or emotional tiredness?
Or it is stress or it is sensory overload.
What is it?
Or it is combination of more than one thing.
And when we can decipher what is causing
that exhaustness or what is causing that overwhelmingness,
only then we can properly rest.
Getting directly coming to home and getting
that cup of tea, or turning on
that television, or taking a short vacation.
This is not going to help.
This is not true.
Rest is okay.
So we need to understand what we need, what
our body is demanding, what our mind is demanding
for, and we need to provide it accordingly.
Just like, let's say there is a car, okay?
And you are going on a long drive.
So after certain time, there will be
fatigue, which the driver will experience. All right?
And. And there will be a
fatigue that engine will experience.
So sometime a driver needs a rest.
Sometime engine needs the rest.
Sometime some other thing are there.
And we need the rest to complete that long journey.
Similarly, in our life as well, we need rest.
Rests are the very, very important pillar
that helps us to reach our goal.
Without rest, we are not going to go anywhere
because it will lead to burnout, it will lead
to stress, and it will lead to all sorts
of problem like depression, anxiety and burnouts that will
pull us back instead of taking us further. Right?
We think that if we keep on
working, it will make us more productive.
No, it does not.
It will lead to burnout.
And that also it will lead to all sorts
of health problems and all those health problem, all
those burnouts will pull you ten step back instead
of taking you one step further.
So it is better to rest, rejuvenate.
And you know, in the example of car, you can say
that after a certain time, you need service and maintenance.
So those, these rest provide that opportunity to
rest and maintain and rejuvenate and service yourself
so that you can perform better, perform optimally.
Alright?
So this was the preface about rest.
Now let's understand how many types of rest are there.
So we'll look into each type of rest one by
one and we will understand when one needs it. Alright?
Okay.
So the first type of rest is physical rest.
We all are familiar with this physical rest when
it is needed, when you are physically exhausted.
So let's say that you have worked a long hour,
maybe you have taken, you have done a long workout,
maybe you have walked a lot, maybe you have been
to a trip, vacation, and after that it was, it
was a trekking or hiking sort of vacation.
And after that, when you are coming
back home, you are feeling exhausted.
So that is most likely a physical exhaustness.
The most, most likely it's physical tiredness
and you need the physical rest. Okay?
So how you can take that physical rest, it is
not by turning on that television that most people do
and or also not by drowning yourself into alcoholism.
Right.
You need to prioritize your sleep.
Sleep well, sleep early, sleep early as
soon as possible after the sunset. Okay?
And prioritize napkin during the day.
If, if the tiredness is still there, if it is accumulated
too much that in your one night of sleep, one night
of, one good night of sleep is not able to make
you recover from that tiredness, then go for naps as well.
Okay?
Because that are also needed.
Small, small naps, they will help
you recover much, much faster.
And if you ask any athlete, or if you ask
any trainer who trains athletes or maybe people who are
into bodybuilding or something, they will tell you that rest
is the most important part of the training.
It's not like the training is separate and you
need to rest to recover from that training.
No, it is part of the training.
Just like rest is the part of overall journey.
Without rest, your journey is not complete
because it will lead to burnout.
It will lead to all sorts of problem. Alright?
So rest is part of your journey.
Rest is part of your training.
And because it is part of your training, if
you rest well, it will enhance your physical recovery.
So even if you are coming back from a vacation,
and if you think that, okay, I have already come
from the vacation, now it is time to work more.
It will, it will.
I mean, you will not be that productive
because your physical health, your body is tired.
So to, to recover from it, you
need to prioritize your physical rest.
And the best way, best way
of physically resting is sleep.
It is not by anything else, sleep well
and you will recover much, much, much faster. Alright?
So that was about physical rest.
Next is mental rest.
All right, so when you need mental rest, when you
think, when you feel that you are mentally overwhelmed.
There are too many things running in your hand.
Your, your mind is racing and
you are experiencing brain fog.
You do not have any clarity what you need to do.
What is the next step that you need to take?
That kind of, that kind of clutter is there
in your mind that time you need mental rest.
When you have difficulty in concentrating in one
thing, that time you need mental rest. All right?
So it might be also accompanied with a physical rest.
Sorry, physical tiredness.
So in that case, you need to
have a physical rest as well. All right?
And one thing I would like to mention
here, not necessarily about mental rest, but any
kind of rest, your tiredness, your overwhelmingness, can
be because of more than one factor.
And that's when you need to prioritize more
than one kind of rest as well.
So in case of mental rest, it can
sometimes come from physical tiredness as well.
Because when your body is tired, it will not
be able to handle so much of information and
it will not be, your mind will not be
working optimally because your body is tired. Right?
Because your senses are tired.
It will, it is not able to take the information in
the right way and it is not, it is not able
to process the information in the right way, and that's why
you have difficulty in concentrating and experiencing brain fog.
All right?
So in case of mental rest, how you take that
mental rest, you need to take short break during your
work if you are experiencing that mental overwhelmingness.
So during your work, you need to take short break.
And if you have been working for a long
period of time, maybe you can plan for a
short or maybe long weekend break as well.
So like two or three days or
four days of break from the work.
And what you need to do is you need to meditate,
you need to mind, you need to engage yourself in mindfulness
practices or in some creative things which you like.
Not if you are not a creative person.
If you do not like dancing, art,
music, pottery or something, then you do
not need to engage in those activities.
Only if you like painting or dancing
or pottery, any sort of creative work.
If you like, you can engage in those creative hobbies.
Right?
You can do meditation.
You can sleep as well because, as I said, that
it can be accompanied with the physical tiredness, number one.
Number two, sleep is also mental as much as
it is physical because your mind also gets relaxed.
Now, there might be counter arguments to this, that
our mind is working when we are sleeping. Yes. Yes.
It is all, it is all true.
But when you sleep, your mind gets
relaxed, lot of emotions, lot of information,
lot of feeling gets processed, right?
Which will otherwise be processing in the, in the
physical realm, physical and in the awakening state.
And in the physical body, it will get, it
gets, it gets processed and it releases your body.
That, that reduces the mental overload on your mind.
So sleep is also very, very
important tool for mental rest.
And also you can take sensory rest.
So what is sensory rest?
We will cover that sensory rest in
later phase in this episode as well.
Okay, so this is how you take a mental
rest, by taking short break, engaging yourself in the
mindfulness activities, engaging yourself in the meditation, engaging yourself
in the creative hobbies, if you have any, or
by sleeping or by taking sensory rest.
So what is the benefit that you get?
You avoid the risk of burnout.
The number one, of course, when you
take mental rest because you are feeling
mentally overweight, overwhelmed, you experience brain fog.
And in, if, in that situation, if you are
continuing, you are at the high risk of burnout.
So when you take mental rest,
you reduces the risk of burnout.
It will improve your concentration because it
will, it will reduce that brain fog.
It will process so much of information and it will
allow you, and if you are sleeping as well, if
you, if you, if it, it will, it will allow
your body, it will make your body more equipped to
handle more information and process it in the right direction
so that you can take better decision as well.
Okay, so that was all about mental rest.
So let's go to the next one.
That is emotional rest.
What is emotional rest and when do you need it?
So when you are emotionally drained or overwhelmed.
So what do I mean by that?
When you are feeling different kind of emotions
or you, or the same kind of emotion,
but with a very much high intensity.
Usually it happens when, at the time of breakup, at
the time of loss, at the time of when there
are series of event which are not pleasant to you.
Alright, so when that happens, one after the other,
one after the other events are happening and they
are not present to you, they somehow starts creating
the void inside you, the sadness inside you.
And when you feel a sudden loss, when there
is a breakup, in the, in the language of
ayurveda, any kind of loss, any kind of detachment,
um, it creates the vata energy.
And then when, when there is vata energy, there is
more chances of feeling stressed or overwhelmed or anxious.
All sorts of things, right?
Or all kind of things that
are related to movement, right?
Because vata energy is more of movement energy.
Anyways, I'm not talking about physical
movement, mental movement as well.
Anyways, so what I'm trying to say
is ayurveda boils it down to that.
It, because it is vata.
So it will create all sorts of vata issues as well.
And if you are not a big fan
of ayurveda, you can leave this part aside.
But what I am trying to say that when
you feel emotional loss or loss and the series
of events which are not pleasant to you, it
creates some kind of void inside you.
And that's when you need emotional rest.
So find a time for yourself when
you can take that emotional rest.
How you take that emotional rest is you can engage
in your hobbies, any kind of hobby, it can be
sport, it can be creative hobbies, or it can be
anything like painting, creating something or contributing to something.
Maybe volunteering. Right.
Journal is a very, journaling is also a
very, very good way to take emotional rest.
Whatever you are feeling, good, bad or overwhelmed,
not able to find where you are going
right now, all those things, you can write
it down in a piece of paper, right?
And if it is too negative, you can take, I mean
you can burn that paper out, you can flush that paper
out, you can tear it, you can scribble it so it
will create a metaphor inside your head that it is all
over, it is all done and dusted. Alright?
So that, that will give you a feeling
that you have all let it out.
All the things that were going on, going
inside you, you have given them an outlet
to come out to exit from your system. All right?
So journaling is a very, very, very powerful exercise.
If you have a friend to whom you
can talk to, that also is very good.
So you can talk to that friend and you
can express your feeling, how you are feeling.
But the difference between journaling and talking to a
friend is journaling is much more slower than talking.
So when you are journaling, your, you hardens your
thought, you concentrate much more on your thought and
that's how that, that's when you are able to
release it in a much, much better way. Alright?
So journaling and talking to a friend to whom
you trust, those, those two are very, very powerful.
But I would say journaling is much more powerful in
my personal experience in someone else's experience in talking to
a friend is, can, can be much more powerful.
That's completely alright.
It's person to, it will differ person to person, right.
And engage in some kind of activities that are
self compassionate and self activities of self care.
Meaning that you need not to be blaming yourself.
That why it is happening to me all the time.
And I am responsible.
Am I responsible for these kind of events?
So you need to treat yourself with a much more
compassion and you need to engage in the activities that
you can call for yourself, like self care.
And the biggest form of self
care activities are getting disciplined, okay?
Getting up early in the morning, working out and
all sorts of things, eating healthy and all right.
So that is, that is how you take emotional rest.
To summarize it, when you are feeling emotionally
drained or overwhelmed, then you take emotional rest.
And how you take emotional rest is by
engaging in the hobbies, by journaling, by talking
to a friend, by being compassionate to yourself
and engaging in the activities of self care. Right?
What is the benefit that you get from emotional rest?
It is.
It makes you more emotionally intelligent.
It enhances the quality of your relationship.
Because if you are emotionally drained or
overwhelmed, it will show up in your,
in your relationship, in your interpersonal communication.
When you will communicate to other person, that energy
will come out and it will, it will ruin
the kind of relationship that you are enjoying with
the other person because that negative energy will hamper
that, that kind of bond, right?
So when you take rest, emotional rest, it will
diminish that kind of energy, that negative energy.
And when you will talk to that other person,
that time, you will be able to process the
dialogues in a much, much better way.
So your relationships will be better if you take
time to time, if you will take emotional rest.
And also it helps to manage stress, because
if you are emotionally drained or overwhelmed and
if still you are continuing, it will build
stress and that will lead to burnout.
So this emotional rest also manages the stress.
All right, let's go to the next one.
This was emotional rest. Okay.
Next one is social rest.
What is social rest?
So there are people whose job requires to meet a
lot of people, to always be surrounded by people.
And there are people also who
likes to be surrounded by people.
But too much of anything is bad.
Excess of anything is bad even if
you are drinking too much water.
So something as harmless and as plain as water, if you
are taking too much of it, that can also be harmful.
So excess of anything is bad.
And so if you are out in the field for so
much of time, if you are talking to so many people
for a long, long period of time and you are always
engaging in your social circle, that is also not good.
That will create a kind of social exhaustion.
And when you are not getting time for your self
care, when you are not getting time to engage in
the activities that you like, or when you are not
getting time to process your own emotions and feeling because
of too much of social interaction, that's when it becomes
too much and that's when you need social rest.
All right, so how do you, how
do you take that social rest?
You need to spend some time alone or
with very few people to whom you trust.
Take a break, go out on a picnic, go out
on a mini vacation or whatever you can afford, okay?
Or maybe stay at home and spend some quality time with
just the person, with, just with the person to whom you
trust or maybe with two or three people with whom you,
to whom you trust, but not with the group.
I'm saying person, but I'm not saying group
because group involves a lot of people.
So I, and when you are taking social
rest, you are avoiding your social interaction with
as much as many people as you can.
Okay, so what's the benefit of social rest?
It helps in maintaining the healthy social relationship because
when you are socially exhausted, some, at some point
in time, it will start showing up in your
attitude, in your behavior, in the way you talk
with people to whom you are interacting.
So you do not want that negative energy to
come out in your interaction, in your dialogues.
So that's why you need social rest
to maintain your healthy social circle. Okay?
So now let's move to the next one.
It is sensory rest.
So when we are constantly stimulated and it is
very, very easy in today's environment, right, because we
are constantly in touch with some or the other
screen, either its tv, smartphone or our laptop, whether
we are working, whether we are in our personal
time, whether we are in our vacation or something,
we are constantly surrounded by screens.
We are constantly using screens.
So screen is a big,
big contributor to sensory stimulation.
And also when, if you are living in a noisy
environment, if you are, again, if you are interacting with
a lot of people, so that also stimulates your senses.
And when I'm saying senses, it's pretty basic.
Your listening means your ears, your nose, your
skin, and ultimately I'm also including your mind.
So if you are getting a lot of information all
the time, that means you are getting stimulated sensorily.
So you need to have that rest, sensory rest, so
that your senses can rest, they can rejuvenate, they can
re energize themselves so that you can receive information in
a much better or optimal way and you can process
them in a much optimal way.
So how do you take that sensory rest?
It's very easy.
Switch off all your gadgets and spend time in silence.
And if you can't spend time in silence.
If you are a nature lover, then you
can go out in a peaceful natural environment. All right?
And the biggest ask, or the smallest ask here is do
not take your phone with you or keep it on.
Switch it off. Switch it. Switch off your phone.
Switch off all the screens that you have,
switch off all the gadgets that you have.
Switch off all the electronics that you have.
Because even if the electronics are there,
that they also create that kind of
electromagnetic pollution that silently stimulate your senses.
So you do not want to be in
touch with any kind of gadgets there.
So all the gadgets you need to switch it off
and if not possible at home, that you go out
in a garden or in a peaceful natural environment, spend
some time there, reflect on your thoughts, be there, just
observe what you are feeling for some time and that
will help you reset, that will help you get the
rest that you, that your senses need.
Alright, so what, how, how does it benefit you?
What is the benefit of taking a sensory rest?
It reduces your sensory overload.
As simple as it sounds, right?
Because when we are sensory sensorily overly stimulated
or overwhelmed, and when we are taking this
rest, so it will reduce that sensory overload.
What it will do, it will lead
to improved focus and reduced anxiety, right?
Because when our senses are overly stimulated, sooner or
later they will take us to the stress, they
will take us to more anxious state.
And if we constantly be in that state, it will
lead to a lot of health problems as well.
So you need sensory rest more than
ever now in this gadget full world.
Okay, that was sensory rest.
Next is creative rest. Okay?
That this might be something which not
so many people might relate to.
But, but if you, if you, if you are someone
who has been working for a long, long time, that
then you can relate to it very well.
When you are feeling inspired, when you are feeling blocked,
when you do not know how to take the next,
next step, you know that what is the next step,
but you are not able to take that.
It's not procrastination, but it is something similar.
But, and it is like you are not getting the motivation
to take the next step and you are not getting to
know the know how of to take the next step.
So that's when you need creative rest.
Because your creative instinct, your ability to
figure out things, that has diminished.
And that has diminished because you have
been working for a long, long time.
And all other problems, all other kinds
of over stimulation like sensory, like emotional,
like mental, like physical tiredness, all these
can contribute to creative rest.
So if you have been working or if you
have been taking care of multiple things for a
long time or maybe a short period of time.
See, short and long is a very subjective thing.
So maybe two days or three days
or seven days in a row, maybe.
It may be a long time for
you or for some, someone else.
It might be one month, two
months, seven months, eight months.
That can be a long time.
So anyways, whatever is your long time, if you
have been taking care of multiple things for a
long time, which you are not very accustomed to,
then you need creative rest because your creative instinct,
your problem solving ability gets diminished.
So when you take this creative rest,
how do you take this creative rest?
You need to take the break from the
activities that you have been doing, right?
So let's say that you have been
working for a very, very long time.
You need to stop working.
And if you are taking, if you are
taking a vacation, you do not need to
take your work in your vacation completely.
Stop what you are working.
And whenever you can do, only then you can do that.
What do I mean by that?
So let's say that you have decided to take
a creative rest and you have stopped working.
But if you are constantly thinking about
the work, then there is no point
of taking that rest, taking that break.
So choose a time when you can say that, okay,
this is the time when I can be stay.
I can stay away from this work or from
the activity that I have been doing, right?
So choose the time for that rest.
And also you need to engage in some other hobbies.
So you need to take a break from the,
from the activities that you have been doing and
engage in the hobbies that you like or enjoy
nature, or enjoy different kind of arts.
So let's say you are writer and you have
been writing for a long, very long time.
Now you are feeling that that is something
called in the writing world, writer's block, okay?
Now you are not able to write.
Now you are not getting that inspiration and ideas that
what to write next and how to write next, right?
So that's when.
And I am when I'm saying that enjoy
nature and enjoy different kind of art.
So you can take a break from writing.
You can engage yourself in some other hobbies.
You can go out in nature and enjoy nature.
And you can also engage in some other kind of
art, which means you can enjoy music, you can enjoy
dancing, you can enjoy painting, just not writing.
So when you engage your senses in different kind
of arts, it gives you new perspective, it gives
you new ideas, it gives you new motivation.
And that's when you can revive
or rejuvenate your creative skills.
So what's the benefit of taking a creative rest?
Of course it rekindles your creativity.
It helps you in finding new perspective.
Also it boosts your problem solving skills.
It is not only for the problem, for
the people who are doing some creative work.
So let's say if you are in a
crop corporate world, you need some kind of
creativity to solve a particular problem.
We all are having that creative skill.
We all are applying that creative skill somewhere
or the other, someday or the other.
So if you have been working for a very long
time, and if you are feeling that exhaustion and you
are not able to understand what that exhaustion is, whether
it's mental, whether it's physical, whether it's sensory, it might
be combination of multiple things, it can be.
Also you need a creative rest, right?
So this is very much needed for anyone.
And if you are someone who have been engaged in
multiple activities for a long time, you need this, right?
So that was creative rest.
And last but not the least, is spiritual rest.
So what is spiritual rest?
On the contrary to any other kind of rest which
we have just talked about, it is you do not
take this rest when you are overwhelmed with spirituality.
Instead, you need this rest when you have
very less of a spirituality in your life.
So how do you recognize this?
What is the symptoms?
So when you feel lack of purpose, when you
feel disconnected, when, when things does not make sense,
when the world does not make sense, it, it
seems like it's a hollow place.
When you are perplexed with a lot
of emotions, perplexed with a lot of
questions, that's when you need spiritual rest.
So how do you take spiritual rest?
You need to engage in your favorite spiritual practice
or religious practice also, because for many people, spirituality
and religion overlaps a lot of things. All right?
So whatever your favorite spiritual practices
are, favorite religious practices are, you
need to engage in them.
You need to meditate in that break,
in that, in that rest period.
You need to read. Read what?
You do not have to read
the motivational books or something.
What I'm asking you to read is, is
your spiritual literature or your religious literature that
you refer as good one, right?
So you need to read in that rest time.
Also spend time in nature,
because ultimately everything is connected.
So when you spend time in nature, we all are
the product of nature that helps us resetting or reconnecting
with this whole cosmos, with the whole universe, that, that
gives you the rest that you need.
And what it does what, what are the benefits of it?
So, as I said, because when, when you feel,
when you spend time in nature, when you feel
connected, similarly, when you meditate, when you engage in
spiritual practices, you feel a sense of belonging.
You feel that you belong to this place
called universe or nature, or this, whatever you
want to call it, this world.
You feel a sense of direction, you feel a sense
of purpose in life, that there is a reason that
you are here on this planet, on this world, doing
some particular, particular role that you are assigned to.
You have a direction to go.
You belong to this place, right?
All these, this feeling that you get,
it's a very, very strong feeling.
I mean, until you experience it, you
will not know the depth of it.
In simple words, I can say that when you are
directionless, when you are disconnected, so let's say there is
a vehicle or there is a boat and you do
not know the destination, where you need to go.
So where that boat will go, it will go in all
sorts of direction, wherever the wind is taking to it, right?
But when you have a direction,
then only you will be reached.
You will be able to reach to a
destination without direction, without destination, without the sense
of going somewhere, it will be directionless.
And for the whole life it will keep
on wandering without any purpose, without doing anything
productive, without leaving its own mark, right?
So it's a very subtle thing, but it's a
very powerful thing, which is sense of belonging, sense
of direction, sense of deeper purpose in our life.
So that this is what you get when you spiritually rest.
All right, so this was the end of the topic.
