Thank you so much for joining me on Pivoting Pharmacy with Nutrigenomics today. Can we just take it back a little bit and tell us about Adrian? How did you get into helping others make these unique transformations in their lives?
Adrienne:First of all, Dr Tamar, thank you so much for saying yes for me being a guest on your podcast show. Whenever I have an opportunity to share my message, I am grateful and I am so blessed to meet individuals like yourself. How I got to this point of where I am now doing my best to support as many people as possible to live a life of more vitality is when I lost my vitality. A lot of times in life, pivotal changes happen when we go through our own personal demise, and for me, I hit rock bottom. The fact that I was given another opportunity and I will always swear up until today. I was given another opportunity and I will always swear up until today.
Adrienne:It's because of divine intervention. I now know that my calling, my purpose, is to pass on what I've learned to others who are absolutely going through a similar journey that I went through to the point where we thought that there was no turning around. I thought that I would live my life with low energy levels when I hit my rock bottom. Never did I think it was possible to climb back out and rejuvenate my energy to where I am today. So that's why I do what I do, because I was given an opportunity to reclaim my vitality and I have no choice, but I must pass it on and pay it forward to others.
Dr. Tamar:Powerful . Well, I don't see any other time better than now to tell us your story.
Adrienne:Yeah, thank you so much and I appreciate you giving me this platform. My story is lost and found. You have something, you don't take care of it. You lose it, and it's only when you lose it that you realize you know what? Wow, I would do anything to get it back. Growing up 20s, 30s, even into my late 40s, I had boundless energy, to the point where people who knew me well used to call me the energizer bunny. You know that bunny on the TV commercial. That goes like on and on and on and on.
Dr. Tamar:I can see it now because you have that energy now.
Adrienne:So that's the energy I had growing up. I was just born with boundless energy. I could eat whatever I wanted to eat. I could sleep no hours at all. I could drink. I could stay up all night. I had boundless energy. I was able to go to work, do what I have to do and I was good to go. And boundless energy, I was able to go to work, do what I have to do and I was good to go.
Adrienne:And then I crossed over my 50-year line, not knowing then what I know now, that you know what. Our bodies can only hold us up for so long and sooner or later, if we do not take care of ourselves, our bodies will start to break down. And that's what happened to me. I crossed over my 50 year line and my lifestyle choices were still the same. I was still going out, I was still drinking, I got involved with a lot of drugging and my life took a spiral. And I realize now that it started when my daughter left and went to university. I've been a single mom with her since she was three, so it was always her and I and I always had a reason to come home. And then she went away to university and I came home to an empty house and in the first couple of weeks it was okay and then after a while I realized I don't like coming home to an empty home, so I started finding reasons not to come home. Initially it was just going out for a restaurant, but I come home at nine but I'm still pacing remember, I'm the person with a lot of energy, so I'm pacing my house. It's only nine o'clock, so I started going from the restaurant to clubs. That was kind of cool. That was cool. And then I heard about after hours. I had no idea what it was, but then I discovered there's a party after the party and just to not come home, I started getting involved with after hours and with that came a whole lot more alcohol and an introduction to party drugs. So my life looked like going to work, restaurant club after hours. I was lucky sometimes if I had two to three hours sleep. I was always responsible, I always went to work, but I started going to work looking like hell. And then I discovered coffee. Oh, coffee can give you that jolt. And then I became addicted to coffee and a lot of processed food because I don't have any time to cook, because I need to go, go, go, go.
Adrienne:Long story short, over the next couple of years I gained a whole lot of weight Bags under my eyes. I was tired, my brain felt like I was carrying a ton of weights in it and I like to tell people at my worst out of 10, with 10 being, I got maximum energy. Most days I was lucky two to a three out of 10 with my energy levels. It all came to a head. I'm going to say maybe I was always going for my yearly checkups, went in that particular year, or maybe it was September, october, and when I walked into the office because my doctor knew what to expect of me and he said, , what the hell is going on? You look terrible. And I said what are you talking about? He goes. Usually you've got a lot of pep to your step, but I can see since last year you've gained a lot of weight. I'm noticing the circles under your eyes and your skin. You just look dried out.
Adrienne:Now my first reaction was well, hold on, now Growing up. What do you hear your parents say? Oh well, she's 50. She should be slowing down. Oh well, he's 55. He should be feeling aches and pains. Oh well, he's 55. He should be feeling aches and pains. Oh well, she's in her 60s. She should be really slowing down. So those are the messages you hear all around you when you're growing up.
Adrienne:So I looked at my doctor and I said but come on, I'm 55. This is the message I'm hearing. Am I not supposed to be slowing down? Am I not supposed to automatically be putting on weight? Am I not supposed to automatically be feeling fatigued? And he says absolutely not. It all boils down to the lifestyle choices you make, and I'm very disappointed, . We're going to go ahead, we're going to do some tests.
Adrienne:Two weeks later he calls me back into the office. , you know what I got. To be honest, I'm not happy with your results. In all of the years I've known you, we've never had a problem with your insulin levels and you being close to diabetic. I'm letting you know now. If you don't make some drastic changes, you are one step from crossing over to being diabetic. Tamar, the reason why that made me sit up and take notice is my father died of his diabetes in his mid-60s. So if I'm 54, 55, what does that mean? I have another 10, 11, 12 years. You see, that's all I needed. I said, oh Jesus, I just connected the two of them together, yeah. But you know, even though we hear what's right, we don't automatically jump.
Adrienne:I still continued going out Absolutely. It's like, yeah, yeah, I'll get to it. You put it off, fast forward to that January. Remember I had to check up in the fall that January, still smoking cigarettes, heavy, heavy. But I never smoked in my home because of my daughter. My garage is attached to my home. It was a bitterly cold winter in Canada that year minus 20 degrees. It took me 10 minutes just to layer up. That's how cold it was.
Adrienne:I'm sitting in my garage, my glove is off, because you don't want to obviously burn your fingers. I'm smoking a cigarette with this hand, I'm smoking a joint in this hand. And tomorrow I just broke down crying. I don't know where it came from. It obviously had been building up inside of me just the frustration of not being able to clean up my life and I cried and I cried and I said, god, you know what. I don't want to do this anymore. I'm damaging myself. I would be embarrassed if my daughter ever came home and saw me in this condition. I would be embarrassed if my family ever saw me in this condition, but I don't know how to get off this maddening wheel that I had built for myself. Of course, I'm taking responsibility now. I built it for myself. All I remember is continuing in the garage.
Adrienne:I came home, and then I continued on my daily kind of travels. What I noticed, though? After I had that plea to God, over the next couple of weeks, I started noticing I didn't still have that same urge to go out every night. I didn't know what to chalk it up to. I noticed and said that I started to get curious about. Let me start researching. How do women's bodies change as we move into menopause, as we move into our 50s and into our 60s? And I started picking up information on oh, oh, okay, I see you mean, if I change this, I may get this result. If I stop this, I may get this result. It started with that mindset this, I may get this result. It started with that mindset, and for me, the mindset was A I don't want to die in 10 years. B my daughter has always been proud of me. I never want to give her a reason to be disappointed in me.
Adrienne:Number three hopefully your audience knows who Betty White was. She was an actress, a comedian, and Betty White died at 99. But up until 99, she was still active, she was still acting and she was still co-producing her comedy special. For me, betty White was the epitome of living life with vitality, and I wanted to be just like Miss Betty White. So, for me, that was my why, and based on having that why and over 12 months, I created a nutritional plan that lined up with my changing hormones and menopause. I added a physical fitness plan to my weekly routine. I separated myself from the negative crowd that continued to embrace me and I aligned myself of maturing females who also advocate for wellness. I started spending more time outdoors. Again, through my research, I realized the vitamin C on the lifestyle choices I started to make, to the point of at the end of the year, my energy levels increased back to an eight to a nine, to a 10 out of 10 most days that I enjoy up until today.
Adrienne:What happened as a result? People started complimenting me on my energy, . You just seem to be more energetic all of a sudden. What happened as a result? People started complimenting me on my energy, . You just seem to be more energetic all of a sudden. What are you doing differently? I like how you're looking. Your skin is glowing, you've lost weight. What is going on? Can I touch you? If I touch you, can I get a surge of your energy? And so a light bulb came on. And it's like, , people who are living with low levels of energy find having energy a commodity for people who are living with fatigue and brain fog. And that's when I said you know what, ? You were able to create a customized program for yourself to reclaim and rejuvenate and reboost your energy. Why not do it for others? And that's when I created my Energy Edge Unlock your Body's Energy program and I brought it out to the world.
Dr. Tamar:Powerful story, your personal transformation remarkable, and I love that. You said it really starts with the mindset, and that's a key component that many people do miss is if we can't get that mindset in order, we can't make that transformation first, nothing's going to stick because you can know what you need to do. But until that transformation, that mindset is changed, there's not going to be any progression or sustainability whatsoever. So that is definitely the first step to that. Now you mentioned the Energy Edge, so I definitely want to get into the Energy Edge. So how do you personalize the Energy Edge program to meet the unique needs of the various clients that you have, especially for those who may have demanding jobs?
Adrienne:I can totally relate because I do have a demanding job and I'm also kind of building my business as well too. So how I start is you have to have a why. So when you first reach out to me, the first thing I say after we go through the pleasantries are why do you want more energy? Because you know I'm all about energy and increasing energy, but I need to know, and you need to know, why do you want more energy? You know what I say to some of my clients.
Adrienne:If I was to give you Aladdin's lamb and a genie was to come out and the genie goes okay, you know what it's all about energy. What would you do with extra energy? They need to let me know. You know what if I could do that tomorrow? This is what my life would look like if I had more energy. Because those days that you go through where you know what, I don't feel like it. I want to give up. You know what. It's not worth it. That's when you pull on to oh yes, I remember why I'm doing it, though.
Adrienne:So it starts off with cementing why do you want more energy? Or, if you do not do something about your fatigue, what is your life going to look like a week from now? What is your life going to look like a month from now? What is your life going to look like a year from now? So I either go from the position of if you had more energy, what are you going to be doing a year from now If you don't do anything about your low energy levels? What is your life going to look like a year from now? So you don't do anything about your low energy levels? What is your life going to look like a year from now? So we start with that.
Adrienne:The second component is I talk about dimensions of wellness. As human beings, we are represented by dimensions of wellness. We have our emotional wellness, our financial wellness, our intellectual wellness, our nutritional wellness, our physical wellness, our occupational wellness, our spiritual wellness and our social wellness. And now, added to the dimension is environmental wellness, because it's a key issue, mental wellness, because it's a key issue. So the second component is rating every single one of your dimensions of wellness.
Adrienne:Out of 10, where 10 is, I feel like superwoman, I'm good to go to one where you know what I'm not doing good at all you rate every single one of your eight dimensions and any dimensions that you have rated yourself under five. That tells me that's what's sucking your energy, because if you had a lot of energy, you would say I'm 10 out of 10. I'm 8 out of 10. I'm 9 out of 10.
Adrienne:But if you are only giving yourself 3 out of 10 based on your nutritional habits, if you were only giving yourself 4 out of 10 based on your physical fitness, so unlocking your body's vitality, those are the dimensions that I am going to customize your program around over the 12 weeks and throughout the 12 weeks we are going to slowly, step by step, you tell me at the beginning of our coaching session , you know what I want to maybe get to a seven out of 10. Some people say I want 10 out of 10. So you let me know I want to maybe get to a seven out of 10. Some people say I want 10 out of 10. So you let me know where you want to go in your dimensions and that will be an indication of how much effort you need to put into your own actions throughout the coaching program.
Dr. Tamar:That's a great way to truly personalize their journey to vitality and help them identify where they need to start and what them identify where they need to start and what it is that they need to work on. What do they need, rather than just being so broad. So this is very personalized. I absolutely love that approach to work towards their transformation. Now, I know I've heard you talk about making friends with your own body, mind, emotions about making friends with your own body, mind, emotions and spirit. How do you do that?
Adrienne:You know, it's something that is new for me as well too, because even though I have figured out how to ensure that I have boundless energy from the time I wake up to the time I go to bed, absolutely I have my days where you know what, man, geez, I want a big Mac and a fry, or you know what I just I really don't feel like going to the gym. So what I realized? We do not, as human beings, acknowledge and show the respect to our physical bodies that our bodies need to our mental management and our emotional awareness. I believe that if we were to stop and acknowledge our bodies and say you know what I got, to say thank you, you have held me up from the day I was conceived me up from the day I was conceived. With all of the abuse that I put you through, with all the environmental toxins that you need to deal with, you are still holding me up. We do not say thank you, we do not acknowledge our physiology, we do not acknowledge our mind, our ego mind absolutely, but the other mind that says you know what you know, you don't need another. Our ego mind absolutely, but the other mind that says you know what you know you don't need another beer. Ego mind is saying have another beer, have another beer because you know how you're going to feel. You know the angel and the devil used to see on in movies. The angel is saying you know what you promised yourself he would go to the gym. You know that you don't need to go back and take that ice cream back out and you've already had half of the container and you want to go back.
Adrienne:Emotionally, our emotions are saying you know what? Why are you still holding that anger inside? I want to feel happy. So our emotions talk to us, but we don't listen. We listen to the ego mind. That person cut me off. I'm still upset. My daughter spoke to cut me off. I'm still upset. My daughter spoke to me that way. I'm still upset. We hold on to it.
Adrienne:For me, I realized why don't I acknowledge the three parts that make up the physical part, the mental and the emotional. So what I've done is I've given all of my parts names. So I am now treating them like a friend. And because I'm treating them like a friend, it forces me to stop and listen. What is my friend saying? So my physical body. And again you find a name that relates to you, my physical body I call her Beta. My emotions I found an African name and I call her essay. And my mind. I've given her the name of Makiba, and Makiba means greatness.
Adrienne:So every day, throughout my day, I will say Makiba, how you feeling. You know what, , you know what? No, I'm, you got. You got these thoughts, man. You're still hanging on to those negative thoughts, , and I don't feel well and it's like you know what Shit? You're right, I'm still thinking about that shit that happened last night. Makiba, thanks for reminding me.
Adrienne:And then I have tools that I have set up to ease my mind, whether it's through breathing exercise, whether it's just going out to walk in nature, whether it's putting on a Steve Harvey funny kind of a comedy show, anything to leave my mind of that negative weight. Physically, my body will say you know what, ? You've been sitting down for a couple of hours, get up. Get up. And I'll say you know what? You're right, you're right.
Adrienne:Too many times we want to keep on working and our bodies are telling us to get up, but we wanna keep on working. For me, it's like the minute I move, it'll be. You know what? Jeez, I feel kind of tight and Binta is saying , get up and move, just get up and move, just walk to the corner, walk up and down the stairs.
Adrienne:So I am making more of an effort to listen to my body, because she will tell me when something is wrong. Too many of us we feel it, but we brush it off until it gets to the point where the pain is so intense. We ain't got no choice. But, oh God, I got to go to the doctor because something is wrong. But our bodies told us months ago, didn't it? But we brushed it off though. So for me, I am learning how effective it can be to give my three dimensions a name and showing respect and acknowledging my physical body, my mental mind and my emotions in keeping me in check. When it comes to I don't feel right. I want to recognize it right away and I want to do something about it right away, because it's not her fault. It's not her fault that I'm holding on to negative emotions and physically, as I'm gaining weight. Do you think my body wants to gain weight? Not at all, I'm just lazy. So I want to start showing a lot more respect for all the diamonds of .
Dr. Tamar:That is a great way to do it, because we tend to ignore ourselves. We know we need to do something. We ignore ourselves, but when we become friends with our body, mind, emotions and spirit, give them their identity when they start reminding us of things or, in essence, it's us reminding ourselves of things but we've now made them our friends and a little bit separate from us. Yet one right we're more likely to listen to others because we're having that encouragement, that reminder from others. So I wow, I like that concept, I like that. I'm sure it's very effective, because I'm even thinking of in other ways how I could actually use that where I need motivation and certain things. So if I choose a name for whatever it is, I can see how, like checking in with myself and get that extra oomph, that push for myself from myself. That's amazing, amazing.
Adrienne:Good for you.
Dr. Tamar:So a question I have when it comes to chronic fatigue, because of the complex nature of it how do you navigate that balance between encouraging your clients to push their limits and advising them to honor their current capabilities when they are going through fatigue and need that energy?
Adrienne:You know first of all when I start working with somebody. You know first of all, when I start working with somebody, I will always encourage them to get a current checkup because some people skip many, many years. So before I start working with you, I really want both of us to understand where you're starting from. Fatigue is so embedded that it's inflamed. I will not work with that individual until they actually get their healthcare provider with another course of treatment. For those individuals that I am able to work with because their chronic fatigue hasn't gotten so inflamed that it needs the level of support from a healthcare practitioner For me, how I support them in balancing it is keep in their forefront why they want more vitality.
Adrienne:I like people to understand that I do believe it was our God-given right. I believe it's our birthright. I don't believe anybody was born to live a life of deficiency. I believe the universe provides an abundance and it's an abundance for all of us to embrace if we so choose. So I like to let my clients know you deserve a life of vitality. You're admitting that you're currently not living your life of vitality. If you want, what is it that you want the rest of your life to look like. What is the quality of life that you know that you deserve, that you you want for yourself and you want it emanated with your children as well too.
Adrienne:I really think it's important for us adults to realize that our kids are role modeling, our behavior. So if you are growing up your kids in an environment where you are making unhealthy lifestyle choices, do not be surprised if you see your children doing the same. So I say to my clients, especially when they have, you know, impressionable children still at home, always keep that in mind as well too. A lot of times we don't even think about that. We know it, but you know what? We're not spending quality, we're not engaged, whatever. We don't realize the effect that it's having on our kids.
Adrienne:So I like my clients to really be aware of the actual reality that's going on around them. You are a role model for certain individuals, so when you are thinking about that balance, it's easy to fall off. Keep in mind not only your why. Who else are you influencing For a lot of people as well, too, especially as they're aging. They are now becoming the primary caregivers for their aging parents, and if you do not have a healthy, energy body, how are you going to be there to help your parents? You know, we are still responsible for children, and now a lot of us are responsible for caring for our parents as well too.
Adrienne:so we are right in that mid-pore where we're being pulled here. We're being pulled here as well, too. We're working, maybe we're going to school. We need to find that balance and and for me the balance will always be why do you want to have more energy? Who's counting on you? Who is role modeling after you, and how much more is your life going to exude more quality by making these small choices? And some of the choices, choices, and some of the choices, some of the lifestyle choices, are so simple and they yield huge, huge positive outcomes. So it's also making that connection that 20 minute walk every day. You'll be surprised after a couple of months how much stronger your muscles are. You'll be surprised just adding a few more whole foods into your diet, how much stronger you'll be. So when you're carrying those bags of groceries, it's not puffing and puffing, it's like, yeah, I'm good to go. It's small lifestyle changes and your body's going to say, oh, thank you, thank you, Thank you. Let me reward you. I'm your genie. What can I do for you, master?
Dr. Tamar:that is so true, one tapping into their why, who it's going to benefit, who they can be here for, how better their lives will be when they make those changes. And yeah, those simple changes. And the other point with those simple changes, it doesn't really take long to start seeing the effects. It really doesn't take that long. You just have to do it and be consistent with it. Now, lastly, Adrienne, you know you've successfully transformed your life in your early fifties and it's a time when many feel that change is difficult. You know, I'm in my fifties, I'm in my sixties. You know how can I change right now? What difference does it make? So what words of encouragement do you have for those who believe it's too late for them to regain vitality?
Adrienne:Your body, your mind and your emotions. They got your back. They're there for you Through thick and thin. They never let you down. Can you say the same? Are you there for your body, your mind and your emotions? And, if you're being honest, how much have you let them down and for how much longer do you want to continue letting them down? They will never let you down. Your body and your mind and your emotions only want the best for you. Don't you want the same for them? That's how I motivate individuals. I have them stop and really think. You know what? Unless I'm a sadist, why wouldn't I want the best for my body? Why wouldn't I want the best for my mind? Why wouldn't I want the best environment for my feelings and emotions?
Adrienne:And remember you can't do anything about the life lived, but you can do something about the life you have left. You don't know if your life is going to be a week, a month, 10 years or 50 years. How many times do people wake up in the morning and the next thing you hear there was an accident on the highway, there was an accident here. Do you think they thought when they woke up that morning that that was going to be it for them. We never know. So my motivation is do not assume you have forever. You don't know. So with the life you have left, why not live it to the max? Why continue to live it to the min?
Dr. Tamar:you deserve to live a life to the max and that is a very encouraging and impactful way to end this interview. I have nothing else to say.
