Speaker 1

At your age , I wasn't thinking about boys , which is not true .

Speaker 2

Seventh grade , right . That's pretty much all we thought about .

Speaker 3

I don't remember thinking about boys at that age .

Speaker 2

You said you were thinking about tetherball .

Speaker 4

Thanks for stopping by the .

Speaker 1

Stuber podcast .

Speaker 4

I'm your host , slash driver , stu Briggs . Today we are hopping on the school bus because our guest is an educator and a mother of two teenagers , yikes . So buckle up , hop in . Buckle up , hop in . Let's go for a ride .

Speaker 2

We are so happy today because our good friend , mrs what , Issa Rivera . That's what the students call her , mrs Barb , but we call her Barb . This is my wife's good friend . I definitely wanted to have a conversation with her because she brings a lot to the table in terms of being an educator , yes or no ?

Speaker 1

Yes .

Speaker 2

Name and claim it .

Speaker 1

Okay .

Speaker 2

What grade level ?

Speaker 1

Kindergarten for 20 plus years . That's a lot Amazing , what .

Speaker 2

Are you kidding me right ?

Speaker 1

now no that's a little . I think it's 23rd .

Speaker 2

So your oldest student is what Probably ?

Speaker 1

Oh , I have one that goes to school in New York college that's studying to be a podiatrist .

Speaker 2

Yeah .

Speaker 1

In my second class .

Speaker 2

But do you remember him , her or her ?

Speaker 1

Yes , we're friends on Facebook , nice .

Speaker 2

Yeah , you don't look it 20 years educating , that's amazing . They keep me young . I hope yeah . So how's it looking these days in the world of kindergarten ? I was looking at a TED talk about why it's important to get kids ready for kindergarten . What do you think about that ? Is it super important to have some things lined up prior to kids coming to kindergarten so that makes your job more easier ?

Speaker 1

Yes , definitely Preschool , tk and now there's a lot of funding now for TK . If they can come in to write their name , hold a pen , hold a scissor , hold a crayon , I'm happy and let me do the rest .

Speaker 2

Right , because you want to get to the real stuff , but you still have to teach these .

Speaker 1

This , and social , social skills too . What's ?

Speaker 2

going on in the social world .

Speaker 1

Just learning how to play with one another , how to share , how to take turns , just patience . That's a lot for a kindergartner . But there's just students that if they're already exposed right in preschool or TK , that will definitely make that transition that's a group to kindergarten yeah , easier .

Speaker 2

Yeah , so that's the other part about this is our guest today is multitasking . She is being a mom at the same time , so while we have her , we want to get into what you were talking about earlier , which is the birds and the bees . You mentioned that .

Speaker 1

Emma yeah , I didn't want to say her name . Daughter .

Speaker 2

Seventh eighth .

Speaker 1

Seventh grader yeah . A seventh grade girl and an eighth grade boy .

Speaker 2

Yeah , so those questions are coming up Today . You said she asked you .

Speaker 1

Mom , when you're my age , did you have high standards for the boys ?

Speaker 2

Where do you think that's coming from High standards ? Is she looking at some of her selections and she thinking these dudes ? I ?

Speaker 1

think she's thinking from the internet , from TV , social media , probably TV shows that she watches Netflix .

Speaker 2

You don't think it was a question that originated from her experience ? You think it was originated from , like a show she's ?

Speaker 1

watching Probably both . I know she has crushes .

Speaker 2

But what I thought was funny was your response . Like you weren't transparent . What did you say ?

Speaker 1

I said at your age , I wasn't thinking about boys , which is not true .

Speaker 2

Seventh grade , right . That's pretty much all we thought about .

Speaker 3

I don't remember thinking about boys at that age .

Speaker 2

You said you were thinking about tetherball .

Speaker 3

Yeah , I used to love playing tetherball . I was a tomboy . I didn't have any boyfriends or crushes . I don't remember kissing anyone before that age . And then I had two brothers that I grew up around .

Speaker 2

But Barb , you're getting ready to navigate these waters . So what is your approach in this situation ? Because for that one you're trying to quell it . You were trying to say , hey , I didn't even think about those things .

Speaker 1

So basically you're saying to her don't even think about it I'm trying , but I'm glad she feels comfortable enough to ask and say these things to me and be open to you , yeah and I'll just keep , I'll tell , I'll just talk to her like just know your .

Speaker 3

Yeah , those kinds of pep talks and no boyfriend until after college . Yeah , after college you can do whatever you want , probably .

Speaker 2

This is part one of something else that we can do later , because you have a BTS which stands for what does it stand for ? It's not Black street that that our back , but her . Your hubby took the two kiddos out to sugar concert and they have to get picked up , so yes we're gonna table the rest of our teen talk for another conversation , but thanks for those little tidbits tonight .

Speaker 2

I think it'll definitely whet our appetite for what is more to come from . Mrs B , they don't call you that , they call you , mrs , oh , mrs Issa Rivera the podcast , please share it with others , post about it on social media or leave a rating and review .
