couple times,"},{"startTime":186.8,"endTime":188.4,"body":"but it's still really new."},{"startTime":188.4,"endTime":193.2,"body":"And so hearing the data on being able to treat some of these dogs that really could die"},{"startTime":193.2,"endTime":197.52,"body":"from the disease and having them bounce back within 24 hours is pretty incredible."},{"startTime":197.52,"endTime":201.68,"body":"So learning about just all the new inventions, there's a lot of technology."},{"startTime":201.68,"endTime":205.04,"body":"A lot of new things coming out in that realm."},{"startTime":205.04,"endTime":209.84,"body":"And I think that it kind of speaks to what we're talking about today"},{"startTime":209.84,"endTime":212.16,"body":"and the question that we conference."},{"startTime":345.28,"endTime":348.48,"body":"They were talking about disability and life insurance."},{"startTime":348.48,"endTime":352.4,"body":"And I think it's interesting because a lot of people said,"},{"startTime":352.4,"endTime":356.4,"body":"you know, you being able to work is where your value is as a vet,"},{"startTime":356.4,"endTime":359.12,"body":"like being able to use your hands, being able to do surgery,"},{"startTime":359.12,"endTime":361.52,"body":"being able to use your brains."},{"startTime":361.52,"endTime":364.16,"body":"If you have a traumatic injury, that's all gone."},{"startTime":364.16,"endTime":368.0,"body":"So, they were talking about how disability insurance is so, so important in our profession,"},{"startTime":368.0,"endTime":370.16,"body":"because it is such a physical profession."},{"startTime":370.16,"endTime":373.52,"body":"But I wanted to know your thoughts on that, because I feel like you"},{"startTime":374.24,"endTime":376.8,"body":"are more aware of all the insurance,"},{"startTime":376.8,"endTime":378.24,"body":"dos and don'ts in general."},{"startTime":378.24,"endTime":379.68,"body":"\u003e\u003e I would agree."},{"startTime":379.68,"endTime":381.84,"body":"I think especially for veterinarians,"},{"startTime":381.84,"endTime":385.52,"body":"you'd have to use your hands, especially for surgery."},{"startTime":385.52,"endTime":387.12,"body":"Now, the reality is if you can't use surgeries"},{"startTime":387.12,"endTime":390.0,"body":"and the more you can still do other things in the profession,"},{"startTime":390.0,"endTime":393.68,"body":"so I don't think it's, you know, if you can't practice medicine,"},{"startTime":393.68,"endTime":395.84,"body":"doing surgery that you just go sit on the couch."},{"startTime":395.84,"endTime":398.88,"body":"So, yes, disability insurance is probably important,"},{"startTime":398.88,"endTime":402.4,"body":"probably more so for somebody that's specialized,"},{"startTime":402.4,"endTime":404.08,"body":"like a surgeon or something like that,"},{"startTime":404.08,"endTime":406.48,"body":"but I think there's other things you could do if you needed to."},{"startTime":406.48,"endTime":407.36,"body":"\u003e\u003e With your degree."},{"startTime":407.36,"endTime":410.08,"body":"Yeah, and we talk a lot about that, about the variety."},{"startTime":410.08,"endTime":414.4,"body":"That's one of the best things about the veterinary degree is it is so versatile,"},{"startTime":414.4,"endTime":417.2,"body":"and you can kind of pivot and rotate whenever you need to."},{"startTime":417.2,"endTime":420.08,"body":"And I do know people that were practitioners a long time,"},{"startTime":420.08,"endTime":422.8,"body":"and, you know, physically couldn't do it anymore,"},{"startTime":422.8,"endTime":427.28,"body":"and so they moved into a different role in the industry role or a teaching role."},{"startTime":427.28,"endTime":428.8,"body":"And so, I think that does work."},{"startTime":428.8,"endTime":435.44,"body":"Now, I will say, I am aware of a veterinarian that does not have full use of her hands,"},{"startTime":435.44,"endTime":437.44,"body":"and she does surgery still, and she actually speaks,"},{"startTime":437.44,"endTime":441.28,"body":"and is a motivational speaker in her industry, and it's pretty amazing"},{"startTime":441.28,"endTime":445.28,"body":"how she's been able to adapt and like still do those things."},{"startTime":445.28,"endTime":449.12,"body":"And so, I'm not going to say that that, you know,"},{"startTime":449.12,"endTime":450.8,"body":"wouldn't be something like changing for somebody,"},{"startTime":450.8,"endTime":454.32,"body":"but there is a lot of ways that you can, I guess, grow"},{"startTime":454.32,"endTime":456.48,"body":"and still be able to hopefully do something."},{"startTime":456.48,"endTime":459.84,"body":"There's other coverages for disability that could be very important."},{"startTime":459.84,"endTime":463.2,"body":"I would consult with the insurance agent."},{"startTime":463.2,"endTime":464.32,"body":"With an insurance agent?"},{"startTime":464.32,"endTime":466.88,"body":"Yeah, well, it's good to know that you have life insurance on me"},{"startTime":466.88,"endTime":470.64,"body":"with all my travel and all the other things that I have going on."},{"startTime":470.64,"endTime":477.92,"body":"Actually, we had an interesting case in the ER that made me wonder a little bit"},{"startTime":477.92,"endTime":479.6,"body":"how good my insurance was currently."},{"startTime":479.6,"endTime":485.44,"body":"So, we had a dog come in, and the dog was bitten and attacked by a coyote"},{"startTime":485.44,"endTime":488.48,"body":"about five days before it came into the emergency room."},{"startTime":488.48,"endTime":493.36,"body":"And these owners had been treating at home the wounds."},{"startTime":493.36,"endTime":496.4,"body":"There was puncture and bite wounds kind of all over this dog,"},{"startTime":496.4,"endTime":498.16,"body":"and it was about a 40-pound dog."},{"startTime":498.16,"endTime":501.2,"body":"She was pretty cute and adorable,"},{"startTime":501.2,"endTime":505.04,"body":"but she came in and was lateral, which means she couldn't get up."},{"startTime":505.04,"endTime":510.4,"body":"All of her wounds smelled horrific, and were like seeping fluid."},{"startTime":510.4,"endTime":513.84,"body":"But the biggest thing was that she was very neurologic."},{"startTime":513.84,"endTime":517.12,"body":"So, her eyes, she didn't have a blink response."},{"startTime":517.12,"endTime":518.4,"body":"She was tremoring a lot."},{"startTime":518.4,"endTime":521.12,"body":"We had to give her medication to stop her from tremoring."},{"startTime":521.12,"endTime":522.32,"body":"She was just very dull."},{"startTime":522.32,"endTime":527.52,"body":"And, you know, when you have an animal that's been attacked by another animal,"},{"startTime":527.52,"endTime":531.2,"body":"it's really not that common for coyotes to attack larger dogs like that."},{"startTime":531.2,"endTime":533.36,"body":"You do hear about them, you know, taking smaller dogs,"},{"startTime":533.36,"endTime":535.2,"body":"but 40-pound dog is pretty decent size."},{"startTime":535.2,"endTime":538.24,"body":"And so, immediately on our list,"},{"startTime":538.24,"endTime":540.4,"body":"had to be the possibility of rabies,"},{"startTime":540.4,"endTime":543.52,"body":"because the time frame of being bitten and showing signs"},{"startTime":543.84,"endTime":545.12,"body":"and there's different forms of rabies."},{"startTime":545.12,"endTime":546.72,"body":"Everyone kind of thinks of like, \"Cujo.\""},{"startTime":546.72,"endTime":548.8,"body":"But there's actually like a furious form,"},{"startTime":548.8,"endTime":553.04,"body":"which is the Cujo form, but then there's also a dull form when they're just really quiet."},{"startTime":553.04,"endTime":555.76,"body":"So, we handled her with gloves,"},{"startTime":555.76,"endTime":558.08,"body":"and only those of us that were rabies vaccinated,"},{"startTime":558.08,"endTime":560.56,"body":"handled her because we were really worried that"},{"startTime":560.56,"endTime":563.28,"body":"it was potentially something like that."},{"startTime":563.28,"endTime":566.88,"body":"And rabies is transmitted by, like, saliva,"},{"startTime":566.88,"endTime":568.96,"body":"and so, you know, you have to look in their mouth,"},{"startTime":568.96,"endTime":571.28,"body":"check their gum color, so we just made sure to wear gloves,"},{"startTime":571.28,"endTime":572.88,"body":"and obviously not get bitten."},{"startTime":573.52,"endTime":576.64,"body":"Because nobody wants to go through rabies' prophylactics."},{"startTime":576.64,"endTime":579.84,"body":"But I was thinking, like, what would happen"},{"startTime":579.84,"endTime":582.08,"body":"if I needed to be treated for rabies?"},{"startTime":582.08,"endTime":582.64,"body":"Because..."},{"startTime":582.64,"endTime":584.4,"body":"I was trying to figure out that an entire time."},{"startTime":584.4,"endTime":587.28,"body":"How do you were going to relate that back to life insurance?"},{"startTime":587.28,"endTime":588.48,"body":"I don't know if you were, like, scared."},{"startTime":588.48,"endTime":590.0,"body":"You were going to get attacked by a coyote or..."},{"startTime":590.0,"endTime":591.04,"body":"I know."},{"startTime":591.04,"endTime":592.48,"body":"So, I don't know if that it was"},{"startTime":592.48,"endTime":594.88,"body":"if I got rabies and, like, died because rabies..."},{"startTime":594.88,"endTime":595.76,"body":"No, almost anything."},{"startTime":595.76,"endTime":596.88,"body":"rabies is fatal."},{"startTime":596.88,"endTime":597.84,"body":"Like, what would you do?"},{"startTime":597.84,"endTime":599.92,"body":"I mean, obviously, you would, you know,"},{"startTime":599.92,"endTime":601.84,"body":"not survive and never get married again."},{"startTime":601.84,"endTime":603.76,"body":"And, you know, spend your days and morning."},{"startTime":603.76,"endTime":605.92,"body":"Exactly what I was thinking."},{"startTime":605.92,"endTime":609.52,"body":"I always joke that I would haunt you forever if you."},{"startTime":609.52,"endTime":612.16,"body":"Anyways, totally, totally a tangent here."},{"startTime":612.16,"endTime":612.64,"body":"But..."},{"startTime":612.64,"endTime":613.84,"body":"That was not on our questions."},{"startTime":613.84,"endTime":615.84,"body":"That was not on the questions."},{"startTime":615.84,"endTime":618.88,"body":"But, yes, that was an interesting case."},{"startTime":618.88,"endTime":620.96,"body":"And it was not a fun case to deal with,"},{"startTime":620.96,"endTime":622.4,"body":"because of the concern for rabies,"},{"startTime":622.4,"endTime":623.84,"body":"which is fatal in people."},{"startTime":623.84,"endTime":625.2,"body":"So, vaccinate your dogs, please."},{"startTime":625.2,"endTime":626.08,"body":"Did you put the dog down?"},{"startTime":626.08,"endTime":627.92,"body":"Yes, we did."},{"startTime":627.92,"endTime":630.08,"body":"We actually talked to animal control,"},{"startTime":630.08,"endTime":633.44,"body":"because of the exposure and, like, how neurologic she was"},{"startTime":633.44,"endTime":635.68,"body":"and how many people she had been in contact with,"},{"startTime":635.68,"endTime":637.92,"body":"especially in the household with, like, all these children"},{"startTime":637.92,"endTime":640.4,"body":"and people we needed to know if she had babies."},{"startTime":640.4,"endTime":642.4,"body":"And so, made that decision"},{"startTime":642.4,"endTime":644.48,"body":"and submitted the samples to find out."},{"startTime":644.48,"endTime":646.96,"body":"So, we'll find out in the next couple days, actually."},{"startTime":646.96,"endTime":648.64,"body":"And if she is positive,"},{"startTime":648.64,"endTime":651.84,"body":"we all get to get lots of shots as a prophylactic,"},{"startTime":651.84,"endTime":653.52,"body":"which is not very much fun."},{"startTime":653.52,"endTime":654.56,"body":"But, we'll see."},{"startTime":654.56,"endTime":654.88,"body":"We'll see."},{"startTime":654.88,"endTime":657.04,"body":"At least there's something that we can take just in case."},{"startTime":657.04,"endTime":659.04,"body":"So, back to our question."},{"startTime":659.76,"endTime":662.0,"body":"So, I thought that this was a good one"},{"startTime":662.0,"endTime":665.04,"body":"and one you could kind of speak to with all the, I guess,"},{"startTime":665.04,"endTime":667.36,"body":"balls that you juggle and I could speak to it And so that is helpful just to keep the appointment rolling.
