love that I'm sitting down talking to you about this because we have a lot of commonalities,"},{"startTime":184.32,"endTime":186.08,"body":"and we're both working mothers."},{"startTime":186.08,"endTime":193.32,"body":"We have multiple different areas of our careers and a lot on our plates."},{"startTime":193.32,"endTime":197.88,"body":"So I think our conversation here is a little bit too old as that experience, but"},{"startTime":197.88,"endTime":202.6,"body":"also boundaries and making sure that we are taking care of so being career women and also moms is a little bit tricky sometimes."},{"startTime":246.24,"endTime":250.6,"body":"And I think especially when you have a lot of different things you're excited about, yes,"},{"startTime":250.6,"endTime":252.76,"body":"it can pull you in eight different directions."},{"startTime":252.76,"endTime":257.88,"body":"So I have had moments where I'm like, okay, I feel like I have this kind of figured out and"},{"startTime":257.88,"endTime":262.68,"body":"then slapped back into reality that no, I actually have no idea what I'm doing."},{"startTime":262.68,"endTime":269.08,"body":"So obviously we are not experts in how to manage all of it, but I do think sharing our experiences"},{"startTime":269.08,"endTime":272.16,"body":"and the things you've been through hopefully will help someone else."},{"startTime":272.16,"endTime":276.04,"body":"And you know, the big thing I hear is from that student and like younger veterinarians"},{"startTime":276.04,"endTime":278.04,"body":"are like, but how?"},{"startTime":278.04,"endTime":281.04,"body":"Just like how do you do it because school is overwhelming."},{"startTime":281.04,"endTime":282.04,"body":"Life is overwhelming."},{"startTime":282.04,"endTime":285.4,"body":"I can't imagine also adding children to what's going on."},{"startTime":285.4,"endTime":292.16,"body":"So my kind of big moments in my career one was I was an equine veterinarian for five years,"},{"startTime":292.16,"endTime":293.16,"body":"loved it."},{"startTime":293.16,"endTime":298.52,"body":"And then I had my first child and I share my burnout story and moment pretty frequently on"},{"startTime":298.52,"endTime":303.68,"body":"that, but how to a couple of times where I was trying to do both things like be a great"},{"startTime":303.68,"endTime":309.04,"body":"mom and be an equine vet and it just the world's collided and physically I just could not"},{"startTime":309.04,"endTime":310.52,"body":"do everything anymore."},{"startTime":310.52,"endTime":312.8,"body":"And I don't know about you, but I had always been like the personality that I'm like,"},{"startTime":312.8,"endTime":314.4,"body":"I'll just work harder through it."},{"startTime":314.4,"endTime":315.4,"body":"Yes."},{"startTime":315.4,"endTime":319.24,"body":"Like if I just keep moving forward, like I will, something will break, right?"},{"startTime":319.24,"endTime":321.8,"body":"And it'll be like everything else, not me."},{"startTime":321.8,"endTime":325.28,"body":"And I had that moment where like no, I broke instead of everything else."},{"startTime":325.28,"endTime":330.28,"body":"And so that was the first time I had to like sit back and be like, I can't just work"},{"startTime":330.28,"endTime":336.96,"body":"harder and realizing kind of how far I could go and push myself in what was healthy was"},{"startTime":336.96,"endTime":341.72,"body":"I think the first step in actually starting to put in place like boundaries, asking for"},{"startTime":341.72,"endTime":343.28,"body":"help and all the other things."},{"startTime":343.28,"endTime":344.68,"body":"Does that make sense?"},{"startTime":344.68,"endTime":346.28,"body":"It does make sense."},{"startTime":346.28,"endTime":351.4,"body":"And I think part of that is like what comes from being a guest person is when stuff gets"},{"startTime":351.4,"endTime":353.56,"body":"hard, you're like, well, it's got to be me."},{"startTime":353.56,"endTime":354.92,"body":"Like I'm just not working hard enough."},{"startTime":354.92,"endTime":357.56,"body":"I just need to do more and I'm just not determined enough."},{"startTime":357.56,"endTime":360.88,"body":"And if I'm just a little more determined, if I'm just work a little bit hard, if I just"},{"startTime":360.88,"endTime":363.0,"body":"give a little bit more, I'll get there."},{"startTime":363.0,"endTime":368.12,"body":"And eventually it all piles up and exactly like you said, we're the ones that break and it's"},{"startTime":368.12,"endTime":372.08,"body":"not, it's of course not healthy for us, but you know, as we're, as we're relating this to"},{"startTime":372.08,"endTime":376.32,"body":"being parents, like, that's not the example I want to set for my daughters either to say,"},{"startTime":376.32,"endTime":378.0,"body":"just work harder until you break."},{"startTime":378.0,"endTime":379.0,"body":"Yeah."},{"startTime":379.0,"endTime":381.6,"body":"And I always get the question of like, how do you do so many different things?"},{"startTime":381.6,"endTime":384.92,"body":"And I try to be really transparent that like I don't do so many different things."},{"startTime":384.92,"endTime":389.16,"body":"I have a huge support system and network and group."},{"startTime":389.16,"endTime":394.4,"body":"So kind of back to you, what support systems have you put in place for you and the ability"},{"startTime":394.4,"endTime":397.24,"body":"to kind of do all the different things that you do?"},{"startTime":397.24,"endTime":398.64,"body":"That's a really good question."},{"startTime":398.64,"endTime":404.08,"body":"I think it starts with clear communication, what your goals are and what's important to"},{"startTime":404.08,"endTime":409.76,"body":"you and that that goes for, you know, the family system so that, you know, my husband and"},{"startTime":409.76,"endTime":413.88,"body":"I, we have clear expectations from each other of, you know, where our priorities are and"},{"startTime":413.88,"endTime":417.84,"body":"what's important and how we're going to make these things happen together and realizing"},{"startTime":417.84,"endTime":419.84,"body":"it's never 50/50."},{"startTime":419.84,"endTime":420.84,"body":"Yes."},{"startTime":420.84,"endTime":421.84,"body":"Oh, that's such a good point."},{"startTime":421.84,"endTime":422.84,"body":"Yes."},{"startTime":422.84,"endTime":425.44,"body":"And just go over us coming to that realization of, you know, sometimes you're going to be busier,"},{"startTime":425.44,"endTime":428.54,"body":"sometimes I'm going to be busier and that's equally important."},{"startTime":428.54,"endTime":432.88,"body":"I also think clear communication in the different things that I do, you know, do in the podcast"},{"startTime":432.88,"endTime":436.76,"body":"and the recordings and things like that, the nature of being a better anarian, sometimes"},{"startTime":436.76,"endTime":438.76,"body":"emergencies do come up."},{"startTime":438.76,"endTime":441.72,"body":"And so being able to say, okay, this is what you need."},{"startTime":441.72,"endTime":443.0,"body":"This is what's on my plate."},{"startTime":443.0,"endTime":446.12,"body":"How can we meet in the middle and get everything done?"},{"startTime":446.12,"endTime":451.68,"body":"I really think it comes down to being clear about what it is that's important to you in that"},{"startTime":451.68,"endTime":458.32,"body":"moment where I have probably fallen short is just being clear with myself of where my priority"},{"startTime":458.32,"endTime":459.32,"body":"is lie."},{"startTime":459.32,"endTime":463.76,"body":"You know, in that moment, I think because I'm trying to do things for other people, it's easier"},{"startTime":463.76,"endTime":465.16,"body":"to communicate that."},{"startTime":465.16,"endTime":470.2,"body":"But when it's me turning back inward and saying, I just need this for myself."},{"startTime":470.2,"endTime":473.44,"body":"Maybe that's where I'm not being honest with myself."},{"startTime":473.44,"endTime":476.68,"body":"I'm still sometimes in that mode of like, no, I can just do it."},{"startTime":476.68,"endTime":477.92,"body":"I can just work a little bit harder."},{"startTime":477.92,"endTime":480.92,"body":"I can just, you know, get up a half an hour early or something like that."},{"startTime":480.92,"endTime":483.68,"body":"And I do have a really great support system."},{"startTime":483.68,"endTime":486.12,"body":"The other thing is my house call clients."},{"startTime":486.12,"endTime":487.6,"body":"You mentioned we both own practices."},{"startTime":487.6,"endTime":489.64,"body":"So mine is a house call practice."},{"startTime":489.64,"endTime":490.76,"body":"Clients are really supportive."},{"startTime":490.76,"endTime":495.44,"body":"I've been really lucky to, you know, kind of cultivate this client group where if I do"},{"startTime":495.44,"endTime":499.12,"body":"have a kid that has to stay home sick from school or, you know, have an emergency come"},{"startTime":499.12,"endTime":504.96,"body":"up or something, being able to call and rearrange things on the fly and a mutual respect for"},{"startTime":504.96,"endTime":509.68,"body":"each other's schedule and time and what needs to be done has been really helpful."},{"startTime":509.68,"endTime":511.0,"body":"It is really helpful and it's interesting."},{"startTime":511.0,"endTime":515.72,"body":"I had an old vet tell me that you can train clients like we believe we can train pets."},{"startTime":515.72,"endTime":517.6,"body":"You can train your clients also."},{"startTime":517.6,"endTime":523.24,"body":"So setting those like very clear expectations priorities like right off the bat, I think helps"},{"startTime":523.24,"endTime":528.88,"body":"us as veterinarians who also want to be present for those things that you can't plan for."},{"startTime":528.88,"endTime":532.96,"body":"Which having children you realize how much you can't actually plan for."},{"startTime":532.96,"endTime":533.96,"body":"Yes."},{"startTime":533.96,"endTime":535.48,"body":"And control you don't have."},{"startTime":535.48,"endTime":536.92,"body":"Supports system for me."},{"startTime":536.92,"endTime":538.36,"body":"I actually am really lucky."},{"startTime":538.36,"endTime":539.92,"body":"My husband works from home."},{"startTime":539.92,"endTime":544.52,"body":"So he does a lot of the childcare and helps out a lot, especially when I travel."},{"startTime":544.52,"endTime":548.52,"body":"And then my sister lives around the corner, my mom lives next door."},{"startTime":548.52,"endTime":555.44,"body":"So I have a group that I can call on because I do end up staying like sometimes at the hospital."},{"startTime":555.44,"endTime":559.68,"body":"There might be a pet that I needed to like stay longer with or something happened and I have"},{"startTime":559.68,"endTime":564.72,"body":"to wait until they can fix something, you know, so there's only so much you can do to try"},{"startTime":564.72,"endTime":567.96,"body":"to plan and be strategic about it."},{"startTime":567.96,"endTime":572.04,"body":"But you have to also have those other layers in place and knowing when to ask for help is"},{"startTime":572.04,"endTime":573.04,"body":"key."},{"startTime":573.04,"endTime":574.04,"body":"Absolutely."},{"startTime":574.04,"endTime":575.04,"body":"Absolutely."},{"startTime":575.04,"endTime":577.28,"body":"And knowing when you can't do it anymore, you can't put this on your shoulders."},{"startTime":577.28,"endTime":579.04,"body":"You need to reach out to somebody else."},{"startTime":579.04,"endTime":580.04,"body":"Yes."},{"startTime":580.04,"endTime":582.08,"body":"And you mentioned staying late at the hospital."},{"startTime":582.08,"endTime":585.96,"body":"You in addition to owning a practice also work emergency."},{"startTime":585.96,"endTime":589.84,"body":"So how does that kind of crazy schedule work out?"},{"startTime":589.84,"endTime":595.2,"body":"How are you balancing having, you know, a normal hours, you know, business hours type of"},{"startTime":595.2,"endTime":597.72,"body":"clinic and then also working emergency?"},{"startTime":597.72,"endTime":601.16,"body":"So I've structured it a little bit that the hospital that I own, I don't actually work"},{"startTime":601.16,"endTime":603.56,"body":"in every single day is a general practicing vet."},{"startTime":603.56,"endTime":607.12,"body":"So I'm the owner and I have veterinarians that work at the hospital."},{"startTime":607.12,"endTime":609.6,"body":"And then I work some days, but not every day."},{"startTime":609.6,"endTime":614.64,"body":"And then my emergency shifts, I work overnight and I work 13 hours overnight, but those"},{"startTime":614.64,"endTime":618.16,"body":"are sprinkled in with everything else that I do."},{"startTime":618.16,"endTime":623.12,"body":"And I have learned I can't do as many overnight scenarios I used to."},{"startTime":623.12,"endTime":625.84,"body":"Like I've gone a little older, which is frustrating."},{"startTime":625.84,"endTime":626.84,"body":"Yeah."},{"startTime":626.84,"endTime":629.24,"body":"I've done an overnight every now and again, like, oh, I can't do this."},{"startTime":629.24,"endTime":630.24,"body":"I'm more experts."},{"startTime":630.24,"endTime":631.24,"body":"Yeah."},{"startTime":631.24,"endTime":634.2,"body":"I used to just like do a ton and now it's like two, maybe three."},{"startTime":634.2,"endTime":636.88,"body":"And then I know I need like a really good rest."},{"startTime":636.88,"endTime":642.2,"body":"But sometimes the 13 hours turned into 14, 15 hours if there's an extra surgery or something."},{"startTime":642.2,"endTime":647.6,"body":"So I really always plan that the next day, there's like nothing major that I need to be present"},{"startTime":647.6,"endTime":650.88,"body":"for because I know that things happen in the yard."},{"startTime":650.88,"endTime":656.76,"body":"And then I do have the group of people that can help get my kids or go to activities."},{"startTime":656.76,"endTime":659.04,"body":"And that makes a huge difference."},{"startTime":659.04,"endTime":664.08,"body":"Just trying to set it up well for all the things that are going to happen at some point"},{"startTime":664.08,"endTime":665.08,"body":"in time."},{"startTime":665.08,"endTime":669.0,"body":"The biggest things you have to realize is like you can have a perfect plan."},{"startTime":669.0,"endTime":673.96,"body":"And if you work in veterinary medicine, something will go wrong and something will pop up."},{"startTime":673.96,"endTime":677.64,"body":"And I do think we have this interesting dynamic that's happening where people are trying"},{"startTime":677.64,"endTime":679.16,"body":"to set more boundaries."},{"startTime":679.16,"endTime":683.24,"body":"And then you have kind of as older veterinarians that are like, but the pets don't know that"},{"startTime":683.24,"endTime":685.2,"body":"we have the boundaries and we want to help them."},{"startTime":685.2,"endTime":687.56,"body":"So what is the balance, right?"},{"startTime":687.56,"endTime":691.48,"body":"Being available and staying and doing the emergency surgery that really has to be done"},{"startTime":691.48,"endTime":692.84,"body":"to save a pet."},{"startTime":692.84,"endTime":698.44,"body":"And then also being home on time for being able to see your kids for A, B, or C."},{"startTime":698.44,"endTime":700.6,"body":"And so I think that's something I still really struggle with."},{"startTime":700.6,"endTime":704.84,"body":"I've been of that for quite a while and I still don't have it all figured out."},{"startTime":704.84,"endTime":708.68,"body":"And everyone kind of has a different ability to handle those things."},{"startTime":708.68,"endTime":716.08,"body":"So have you ever had a moment where you really felt like I had to prioritize being a veterinarian"},{"startTime":716.08,"endTime":717.48,"body":"over my family?"},{"startTime":717.48,"endTime":722.08,"body":"And was it because of a pet patient or have you done a pretty good job of saying, I'm going"},{"startTime":722.08,"endTime":722.76,"body":"to stop."},{"startTime":722.76,"endTime":728.32,"body":"And I go home, I can say no, even though you know that it could affect a pet's life."},{"startTime":728.32,"endTime":729.32,"body":"Does that make sense?"},{"startTime":729.32,"endTime":730.32,"body":"It does make sense."},{"startTime":730.32,"endTime":734.2,"body":"And I don't think anybody would say that I'm good at setting boundaries and saying no and"},{"startTime":734.2,"endTime":736.88,"body":"making prioritizing, you know, getting home and stuff like that."},{"startTime":736.88,"endTime":740.76,"body":"And I don't say that to be like, no, I'm not not martyring myself here."},{"startTime":740.76,"endTime":742.56,"body":"It really is something that I struggle with as well."},{"startTime":742.56,"endTime":745.52,"body":"And it's very comforting to know that you struggle with it too."},{"startTime":745.52,"endTime":749.6,"body":"Like euthanasia is a big thing, especially because in a house call that, you know, we get"},{"startTime":749.6,"endTime":755.16,"body":"really close relationships with these clients and I can think of one example where I knew"},{"startTime":755.16,"endTime":756.84,"body":"there was a pet needed to be euthanasia."},{"startTime":756.84,"endTime":758.0,"body":"Like there was no doubt about it."},{"startTime":758.0,"endTime":764.8,"body":"It was time and I was not going to be available until later in like basically after like 8"},{"startTime":764.8,"endTime":770.32,"body":"pm because I needed my husband to get home to take care of the kids before I could go."},{"startTime":770.32,"endTime":774.36,"body":"So I think by the time all was set and done, this client was okay with it, I don't think"},{"startTime":774.36,"endTime":777.76,"body":"I made it over there till like 9 30 or 10 o'clock."},{"startTime":777.76,"endTime":784.24,"body":"And really was that absolutely impacted the next day, but you know, I was like, this is"},{"startTime":784.24,"endTime":785.24,"body":"important."},{"startTime":785.24,"endTime":786.24,"body":"I have to be there."},{"startTime":786.24,"endTime":789.8,"body":"I feel like I've gotten better at saying I'm not available."},{"startTime":789.8,"endTime":790.96,"body":"I can't do it."},{"startTime":790.96,"endTime":795.12,"body":"But it's come from a place of feeling like I'm burning out like I'm going to break if I"},{"startTime":795.12,"endTime":796.12,"body":"don't say no."},{"startTime":796.12,"endTime":802.44,"body":"And I don't know that if that's like the healthiest place for that no to come from, I think"},{"startTime":802.44,"endTime":804.96,"body":"you need to kind of explore those boundaries."},{"startTime":804.96,"endTime":808.08,"body":"And that's where I talk about like having that honest communication with myself, like what"},{"startTime":808.08,"endTime":809.08,"body":"is the limit?"},{"startTime":809.08,"endTime":813.96,"body":"And knowing ahead of time where to say no because you mentioned planning and you're 100%"},{"startTime":813.96,"endTime":818.56,"body":"right with kids and veterinary medicine, the perfect plans will go a right every time."},{"startTime":818.56,"endTime":822.6,"body":"But I have
