Trusting Personal Revelation

Becky Schettler Season 2 Episode 8

In today’s episode, I’m sharing a story about personal revelation and how it’s shaped my parenting and everyday decisions. One surprising moment—skipping the temple to get pizza—became a powerful reminder that God knows exactly where we’re needed and when. I also reflect on the words of Elder Richard G. Scott and how prayer and quiet listening can lead to incredible peace and purpose. Whether you're seeking guidance or learning to recognize the Spirit’s whispers, I hope this story brings light to your path.

Quote:

“God will always hear your prayers and will invariably answer them… He will prompt you in quiet moments when the Spirit can most effectively touch your mind and heart.”   — Richard G. Scott

Journal Prompts:

  • What do I already know?
  • How can I fuel my faith in this situation?
  • Are there new ideas or options I have not thought of yet?

Welcome to the Shine on Podcast. Today I have been thinking about personal revelation and how it helps me navigate through parenting and through being aware of how other people are feeling and how the Lord wants me to move forward. Prayer is a big part of personal revelation. Often we pray for help with a significant matter. Richard G. Scott gave a wonderful talk in 2007 called Using the Superal Gift of Prayer. I love some of the things that he said in his talk. Elder Scott says,"Heavenly Father will give us gentle promptings that require us to think, exercise faith, work, at times struggle, then act. It is a step-by-step process that enables us to discern inspired answers." So I just wanted to share a couple of examples that I've had in my life. Parenting is an everyday thing for me and going to the Lord in prayer and praying about things that concern me, that worry me, that have really stirred my heart and challenged me and my core beliefs. I'm so grateful for the power of prayer and what it has done for me, has changed the way I approach things. So many times I think of what I would say to a particular person. And often my thoughts are frustrated and bossy or corrective or complaining or comparing. And as I take my concerns to the Lord, I have felt a change where moments have come, where I've had opportunities to speak, and it has come out more calm, more peaceful, more loving. And I know that is the change that I needed to handle a specific situation. Years ago, on a Friday afternoon, my typical routine was to go to the temple. It was a pattern that I did with my parents while they were alive, and it was just part of what I did on Fridays. This one particular Friday, I had some things in the morning, so it was a little bit later in the day that I was going to go to the temple. And this season of my life, I was really practicing trying to pray and listen to the spirit and act on it. Part of praying for answers is trusting that the Lord will prompt you and my responsibility is to act on it. So I was really trying to listen and to act on spiritual promptings. So on this Friday, I was planning to go to the temple. And I paused before I got in the car and I just said, Heavenly Father, I am ready to go to the temple. Please bless me. But this strange thought went through my mind. It was, but you haven't eaten lunch and you're hungry, you should go get a pizza for lunch. Now, that was not my typical talking to myself. I don't often go out to lunch by myself, and I often don't go get pizza, and I often wouldn't miss the temple for anything. And so this was very different, and I paused and I was like, that's interesting. I feel very prompted to go pick up a pizza for lunch and feed myself first. And I kind of questioned it, but I was like, okay, I am practicing acting on the spirit. So I went to the pizza place and I was standing in line to order and I got a phone call from a friend and she was in distress. She was crying, she was very disturbed, and she said, do you have time to come talk to me? And the spirit said, this is your time. You go talk to her and share your pizza. And my answer to her was, absolutely, I'll be there in 10 minutes and I have a pizza we can have for lunch. So I did. I went to her house, we sat on the front porch and she shared with me some really painful and hurtful things that she was going through in life. Her comment to me was, I didn't think that you would answer the phone,'cause you're always at the temple on Friday. I said to her, but the Lord knew that you needed me first. This was such a powerful experience that I had of prayer, asking for guidance, acting on it in faith, and being there to serve someone that needed it. This reminds me of Jesus and how He was always willing and ready to listen and to serve in the spur of a moment. He was there for people and they felt loved, they felt listened to, and they felt cared for. I want to share another quote by Richard G. Scott. He said,"God will always hear your prayers and will invariably answer them. However, His answers will seldom come to you while you are on your knees praying, even when you may plead for an immediate response. Rather, He will prompt you in quiet moments when the spirit can most effectively touch your mind and heart. Hence, you should find periods of quiet time to recognize when you're being instructed and strengthened. His pattern causes you to grow." I have noticed in my life that answers come to me in a variety of ways. Sometimes the answer is, stop, don't move. Sometimes the answer is, go act now. Sometimes the answer is, wait, get more information, or it's not the right timing. I know that answers come in different ways, and when I am about the Lord's work and doing my part, sometimes the answers come in the most quiet moments of my life. Often my answers from the Lord are: Both answers are right, it's up to you to choose. Sometimes God is waiting for us to take the first step. And He will be there to go with us the rest of the way. I want to leave some journal prompts about receiving personal revelation. The journal prompts go like this: What do I already know? How can I fuel my faith in this situation? Are there new ideas or options I have not thought of yet? Pondering these questions will help us as we need to make decisions and as we take our prayers to the Lord, asking for significant help. I know that he hears our prayers and I know that he'll answer us with gentle promptings in our own spiritual language that we can understand. If today's story reminded you of a time when Christ's light felt brighter, or if you're longing to feel more of His light, I'd love to connect with you. I'm scheduling free mindset breakthrough calls to offer new insights so that you can feel more peace and purpose. Come find me on Instagram BeckySchettlerCoaching.
