SHINE ON with Becky Schettler

Wait for the Lord

Becky Schettler Season 2 Episode 11

In today’s episode, I open up about something very real and personal—what it feels like to be in the middle of waiting. Whether you're praying for a job, a relationship, healing, or a change in life circumstances, the waiting can feel long and heavy. I share the experience of walking through this season with my daughters and how we’re learning to stay grounded in faith, not fear. You’ll hear the truths I’m holding onto, the habits that are helping me, and how I’m learning to find peace before the breakthrough.

If you're in a waiting season, this episode will remind you that God sees you, knows your heart, and is always working—even when we can’t see it yet.

Psalm 27:14, “Wait for the Lord. Be strong, and let your heart take courage.”

Quote

“[God] loves you not only for who you are this very day but also for the person of glory and light you have the potential and the desire to become.” Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf

Journal Prompts from SHINE ON Bullet Journal:

Welcome to the Shine on Podcast with Becky Schettler. I am grateful that you are here taking the time to listen to this podcast today as I share some insights about creating peace and happiness in our lives when things aren't working out as quickly as we would like them to. I hope my personal story will strengthen your faith and testimony of Jesus Christ as I share my current challenges in my life. It's always a little sensitive to talk about the hard things that we are in the middle of because we think it'll be easier to share with people later. I'm learning that facing hard things head on gives me more power to change the way I feel inside in the moment, and that is the only place we can find peace and rest is in the present moment. So what is really going on inside my life is helping my two daughters who are single and applying for jobs. They are both college graduates, smart, capable, and responsible girls. They have faith in Jesus Christ and they are actively going to church and quote,"doing all the right things." In the past eight months, collectively, they have completed about 375 job applications. This is real life. This is what life looks like when you're waiting for the outcome to happen. Looking for the job or marriage or the graduation, the birth of a baby, the kids to graduate from high school and move out, or a best friend, et cetera. We all face hard things in life, and it feels like a struggle. The struggle comes from resisting reality, letting the world make us feel like things are not working. Therefore, something is wrong with me, or I am the problem and it's not worth waiting for something better. It feels discouraging, depressing, embarrassing, and it gets to the point of not wanting to try anymore. It is easier to see all the things going wrong and focus on what you don't have than it is to see what you do have and celebrate what blessings are unfolding along the way. As I have been pondering on this topic and my experience, I came across this scripture in Psalms 27:14. And it says,"Wait for the Lord. Be strong and let your heart take courage." Yes. Wait for the Lord. I want to address this space of time, this waiting for the Lord. It's the difference between where we are in our current situation and where we will be someday when things start to change for the better. I call it finding peace and joy in the journey because when we do reach something better, we can look back and see that there was happiness and peace in the process all along. The question I pose is, how do we find peace and happiness in our current situations while waiting for results or resolutions? I want to share a few principles I am learning through the journey that I'm in and observing this firsthand. Number one, our identity comes from God, not from the world. Our current situations don't change our divine identity. I like to say our experiences in life don't define us, but they refine us as we center our life on Christ. Number two, this life is a probationary state, and trials will test us. No one is exempt from trials that challenge us to our very core. Choosing God is trusting that things will get better and the future will be bright. Number three, there is power in movement. Every day is a new day to start over. We can't just stay in bed until the trial is over, although you may be tempted to. We have to get up, get ready for the day and prepare yourself. It is an act of faith. Small daily actions will keep you moving forward and will continue to add oil to your lamp like the five virgins that were prepared when the bride groom came. I know the importance that small daily habits can be for keeping our mind, body, and spirit healthy and balanced so that when the opportunities arrive, we will be prepared to accept what we are called to do at work, home, or in our relationships. I have been using my Shine On bullet journal consistently for the past six months, and my personal spiritual strength has overflowed into the lives of my family in my home. Simple daily habits such as choosing top three priorities of the day and setting weekly goals to aim for has been a great way that we encourage each other. These are tools for my bullet journal that have shaped this season of our life while waiting patiently on the Lord's Perfect timing. I witness there have been many blessings along the way because I look for them and I acknowledge them every day. One of the greatest blessings has been working with my daughters. Mary started my whole social media marketing platform two years ago and has taught me so much about how Instagram works. She has also designed and published my website beckyschettlercoaching.com. Brittany helps me edit and produce this podcast, which is a big deal for an old lady like me. I couldn't do what I do without them. We have been blessed to have each other during the season of transition. Although we feel like we are waiting on the Lord's timing to land that job or get married or wait for kids to be born, or for kids to leave home, or finish school or retire, whatever it is, we can find rest and happiness through our small daily habits that align our actions with God's plan for us. If everything feels so overwhelming and you don't know where to begin, I suggest you start with gratitude. Start listing what you already have and build from there. In my podcast, I like to offer some journal prompts, and today's prompts come from my Shine On bullet journal. Number one. How have you seen God in the details today? Number two, what filled you with joy today? Number three, who did you serve today? I want to remind you how much God loves you and he does care about you and where you are in this journey. Elder Dieter F Uchtdorf said it like this: God loves you not only for who you are this very day, but also for the person of glory and light you have the potential and the desire to become." Remember, you can shine His light all along your journey through life. I am growing my reputation as a Happy Habit Tracker coach.
