SPEAKER_00Welcome in, folks, to another episode of the Six Ten Podcast. I'm your host, Jay Holohan, back here on this Thursday evening, as we discussed the Philadelphia Phillies winning the series finale against the Toronto Blue Jays yesterday by a final score of seven to four. It was you know a game in which I think I can speak for everyone when I say the Phillies absolutely after the night before the brutal walk-off loss at the hands of the Blue Jays, they needed the offense to come out right away against Mad Max Scherzer. And sure enough, it was Bryce Harper getting the party started with a two-run blast, Harper's 15th home run of the season. And for the Phillies, just a good start, a good lead to then allow Jesus Lazardo to settle in. He pitches around a one-out single from Vlad Guerrero Jr. in the top of the first. Phillies in the bottom of the second, or top of the second, rather, they don't uh get anything going aside from an Adolius Garcia two-out walk. More on him in a moment. But then the bottom of the second sees Jesus Lazardo go back out there. Two ground outs and a strikeout. And, you know, you're kind of saying to yourself, okay, he's feeling himself top of the third, back-to-back singles by Schwerber and Trey Turner. And then uh, you know, unfortunately, Harper and Brandon Marsh, ground out and pop out. So it puts runners at the corners and a one-o pitch to Alec Bohm, and Alec Bohm sets a one-o slider. He sends it over the left center field wall, crushing this ball, uh just a deep, deep shot from Alec Bohm, and the Phillies lead it four to nothing to continue to give some more leash to the lead for Jesus Lazardo. And Lazardo, who then would get two more runs at his help after a one-out single from Justin Crawford, the Blue Jays take out Mac Scherzer with just one out in the fourth, and they put in Mason Fluhardy. And Flewhardy sends uh a 2-2 cutter that's in the happy spot for Kyle Schwarber, and Schwarber deposits it 423 feet over the right field wall, his 24th Homer of the Year, his second in the month of June, and the Phillies have a 6-0 lead. When you get a 6-0 lead, you know, you have all the faith in the world that your pitcher should be able to go out there and get the job done, and Lazardo did that. It got shaky in both the bottom of the fifth with two on and one out, but he gets George Springer to strike out, and then Nathan Luke's on a strange play on a pass ball gets away from JT, goes down to second, and then, you know, kind of just losing himself was Luke's as they caught him in a rundown. Really kind of an odd situation as that ball got away. I think he was and then he just he just stops. He doesn't even go. I mean, JT just runs at him and then goes to Stott, who goes to Harper. That was a stran one of the strangest plays you'll see because it's like, dude, what are you doing? But then Um Phillies don't get anything going in the sixth, but in the bottom of the sixth, a one-out Ernie Clement walk, then a Akamoto walk, a strikeout to Penango, uh, puts two outs and runners at first and second, but then Brandon Venezuela hits an RBI single, it's a six-one game. Phillies go to the bullpen, they bring in Jonathan Bolin, he gets Andres Jimenez, and Phillies add on. Bryson Stott, RBI single and at 7-1. So, okay, it's back to a six-run game. But then Chase Sugar comes in. He loads the bases with nobody out. Then a walk to Vlad Garot Jr. Still nobody out. Ernie Clement, a sack fly. So, okay, now the tying runs on deck. And then Akamoto flies out to right. And on the fly out before the sack fly, Adolis Garcia comes up with the ball and has to fire home. And obviously, on both sack flies, it looked like Adolis Garcia had to put a lot into both of those throws, obviously. The first one just going to the cutoff man, second one coming to the plate. And I think on the second one is where he really did himself in. As it was announced last night after Garcia left the game. Probably unfortunately, J.T. Romoto can't come away with that ball at the plate, so it's kind of, you know, all for not there. He could have just hit the cutoff guy and not tried to go home, right? But he has appeared to pull a muscle in his right shoulder. The severity of it, we don't know yet, but we have no word really on much right now. Obviously lifted from the game for Stewart uh Baroa, who would take over in right for Garcia. But where things are right now with Adolius Garcia again, we don't know. But just judging by we could speculate here, and let's play Adon Mattingley now after the game, and here's what he had to say, and then we'll speculate a little further.
SPEAKER_01I'd say a little bit. Obviously, I didn't, you know, anytime the guy they kind of know when they've done something. So we'll see what happens. I'll probably get some imaging tomorrow. I'll find out where it, you know, true severity of it. Um for the best, we'll see what happens.
SPEAKER_02Given what he spent for you guys defensively, how much of a blow would it be if he has to miss the time?
SPEAKER_01Well, obviously, you lose a defender like that, it it changes things a little bit. But uh you know, everybody deals with you know stuff all the time, so we'll have to, you know, somebody's gonna have to pick it up.
SPEAKER_00It's never good to speculate on these kinds of things, but when you hear it from Don Mattingley, and just judging by the reaction of the guys after the game, they seemed pretty concerned. They seemed like they know that Garcia could be out for a while and they're gonna lose a guy in the lineup. How long we don't know. We're hoping for the best, and it's just I mean, the best case scenario is day-to-day, but I don't know if that's as if that's going to be what we're looking at here. You know, we could hopefully it's just he goes on the ten-day IL. But obviously there's people who have seen injuries like that that believe that it could be even longer than that. I mean, there are then and obviously it's pure speculation at this point, but it has led to, and to finish up the recap of the game, Phillies obviously get the final six outs. After that, Johan Duran comes in after a tough night the night before, after a leadoff single from Springer, gets a double play, then a two-out single Ernie Clement, then he comes back to get Akamoto, who, you know, first uh ABS, I believe, ABS game to be final, you know, on the final pitch to be deemed from the ABS challenge system for the Phillies at least. First one was a couple hours south of Philly in Baltimore, but it was the first time, I believe, for the Phillies that a game has ended via the ABS system. But regardless, the Phillies go out today back to the Adoles Garcia decision, and they trade for Derek Hill. Now we just saw Derek Hill with the Chicago White Sox. He's at the age of thirty. He's been a drifter. Uh was originally drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the first round back in 2014. Guess who the general manager of the Detroit Tigers was at the time? You guessed it. Dave Dombrowski. So Dave obviously going uh completely off the wall here and selecting someone that he has, you know, never had any any kind of a working relationship with. Um obviously that's a joke, as he trades now for his former first round selection, Derek Hill, who was brought up to the majors in 2020. And, you know, just kind of has been the way I would phrase it as a bench piece for a lot of teams. He's a career 0.8 war, 656 at bats, he's got a 278 on base, a 227 average, 629 OPS, a 351 slug. He's driven in 62 RBIs. I mean, no pun intended, but Dave certainly did not swing for the fences on this deal. And I mean it's a deal cash considerations. Uh they get Dylan Campbell and Jose Colmoneris back for uh the Chicago White Sox, Campbell, an outfielder for the Phillies, uh, was promoted to the Reading Fight and Phills in 2025. Um he opened the year with the Redding with Reading to begin this season. I wouldn't necessarily go as far as to say Campbell was, you know, perhaps crushing the baseball, but uh he hit 216. He's at 23, so obviously someone that is well on his way, you know, to hopefully making a big league roster at some point. And then Jose Camaris, who's an infielder, uh came over from the Yankees farm system last year, uh, has just you know been promoted to Jersey Shore, or was with Jersey Shore last season, with Jersey Shore again this year, and you know, at the age of 24, he's hitting 278 so far through the season with three homers and nineteen RBIs. We'll see what happens in his career, but obviously this is essentially what you would expect to trade for a guy who's possibly going to be a platoon player and on your bench. Now, does this mean that any of the any of these moves that the Phillies make will they have an immediate impact, you know, getting a Derrick Hill for this Phillies team and for this offense? Like, is this going to add much? No, not necessarily. And with about, you know, six weeks, give or take, until the trade deadline, there is still more work that's going to need to be done to solve the right-handed bat situation. But we already knew this even before Garcia got hurt. And while I, like a lot of Phillies fans, have been concerned about, you know, the status of Garcia and how long he's going to be out, hopefully this kind of lets us know that from whatever news we're going to hear tomorrow, that at least there's someone in line that has experience in the big leagues that can just serve as possibly you know, a platoon guy for the Phillies. Because at this current situation, Gabriel Rinconis Jr. Uh is the guy everyone's kind of been eyeing down as you know, the guy who could come up, make his big league debut at 25. Um, you know, he's been kind of bouncing around here throughout this season. Uh, he's been in single A right now in clear water. He's got a career 244 batting average, 356 on base, slugging at 424, 45 homers and 174 RBIs in 329 minor league games. Not killer numbers from the left-handed side of the plate, but hopefully he can give you a decent production for this Phillies lineup. And now we obviously turn our attention towards Milwaukee as the Phillies will begin a three-game series against the Brewers. The Brewers, who, I mean, you know, Peralta, Freddie Peralta goes to the Mets in the offseason, and you know, Milwaukee doesn't skip a beat. Just like last year, Devin Williams signed with the Yankees and they didn't skip a beat. This year they're 41 and 25 to begin the start of the season. You know, I don't want to say I don't want to call the NL Central early because the Cardinals are four games back, but I have more faith that the Brewers are going to win that division. Um, and I have all the faith in the world that pretty much every team that's in the lead right now in the National League, the Braves in the NL East, Brewers in the Central, Dodgers in the West, I have a pretty good feeling that we sit here on June 11th, these three teams are going to be winning their divisions. That's just the way baseball is right now. You know, the only competition right now in Major League Baseball is the National League. The American League, your heaviest of hitters is gone now in terms of just individual players. Aaron Judge, you know, we aren't sure if he's going to be back before September. We assume he's going to be back for this regular season, but obviously he's going to be out for a while. The Tigers are hoping when they get school ball back over the weekend, it'll propel them. They're 11 games under 500, but they are as many games out of their division as the Phillies are in the NLE. It's not that that's saying anything for the Tigers, but at 29 and 40, they are still five and a half games back of a wildcard spot. That's how bad the American League is. In the National League, the Phillies who sit a game and a half back of the Cardinals, who took two out of three from the Mets, but lost today. So the Phillies made up a little bit there on the Cardinals, sitting just a game back of the top wild card spot, and facing the Milwaukee Brewers in this upcoming series. Ideally, it's going to be difficult to make up, and the Cardinals are going to be in Minnesota, so that's a favorable series for them. But for the Phillies, it's going to be tough to make up much ground on Atlanta and much ground on St. Louis. They won the series in Toronto, so they're six games above 500, which is good. What's not good is this starting pitching preview that we're going to get into. Your number one guy going tomorrow night is going to be the man who is towing neck and neck with Christopher Sanchez for the Cy Young Award right now, and that's obviously I'm talking about Jacob Mizarowski for the Milwaukee Brewers. 7-2 with a 1-5 OER A coming into this start. He's been amazing this season. Phillies have faced him one time in his career, it was last September. And funny enough, he only went four and a third, and he gave up three runs on six hits, walking one and striking out four. So that's the lone start the f he's had against the Phillies. Does that mean the Phillies are going to go out there and crush him tomorrow night? No, but it is kind of funny that that's the only time they faced him, and it was the first time they faced him, and we know how bad they are typically against pitchers they've never faced before, and he went out there and you know did not have a great start. But tomorrow night, Andrew Payner will take the bump for the Phillips. He toes the rubber with a one-and-seven record with a 6-2-1 ERA, and he's been hit around in those last two starts, giving up ten runs on 15 hits and eight innings between his last start against the Chicago White Sox on Saturday, and then that previous Sunday against the Dodgers. He's walked four batters and just seven strikeouts in two. His fastball has been horrific. It's his bread and butter, and it's been pretty brutal. He needs to get things going in a much needed fashion coming up tomorrow night to give the Phillies a chance. Game two, we'll see Shane Drawn take them out for Milwaukee 3-1 with a 3-1-1 ERA. He's a left-handed pitcher. So we know how bad the Phillies have been against lefties. In the last couple starts, they've been a little bit better, so we'll see what they do. Now, funny enough, he was originally drafted by the Phillies Phillies out of high school. This was in the 23rd round in 2017, and typically those players they decide, you know what? I saw what Jonah Hill recommended to uh to Billy Bean and Moneyball. I would have gone to college instead, and that's what Jeron did. He declined. He played college baseball at Florida State, then he was picked by the Red Sox in the fifth round in 2020. He was traded to Milwaukee this past February. You know, the Red Sox traded him, Kyle Harrison, Kyle Harrison, and David Hamilton in exchange for Caleb Durbin, Andrew Monestrio, and Anthony Siegler, and a compensation round pick in the it doesn't say which round, just it was a compensational pick in the 2026 draft. The Phillies have never faced him before, so there's a little information there. And then the Brewers will see Aaron Nola. He's 3-4 with a 5-8-6 ERA. He's 2-2 with a 4-6-5 ERA versus the Brewers since 2023. He's 2-3 with a 4-6-0 ERA in his career in Milwaukee. Now, two out of his last three starts in Milwaukee. He's gonna combine 9-2 thirds innings, giving up 13 runs on 14 hits with 5 walks and 11 strikeouts. Suffice to say, Aaronola needs to be better. But the offense is going to need to be the big catalyst here in the series, as you can tell. Game three, Kyle Harrelson. Kyle Harrison will take the mound for Milwaukee. So the other player there that the Brewers got for uh the other pitcher the Brewers got in that Red Sox trade, and Harrison is seven and one with a two-seven one ERA. He's also a left-handed pitcher. He's seen the Phillies once in his career. He's 0-1 with a 6-4-8 ERA. So hopefully that bodes well, but we'll see. Christopher Sanchez, who's 8-2 with a 1.45 ERA this season, obviously. He toes the rubber rubber with a 1-6-4 ERA versus the Brewers in two starts. He's gone a combined 11 innings. He's given up two runs on 10 hits with two walks and six strikeouts in 2023 and 2024. Now he's never pitched in Milwaukee, so he's only faced them in three appearances at CBP. So we'll see what kind of a series the Phillies give us. Now, if they can just win one game and you know come back home 38 and 33, I think we'd all be kind of okay with that. I mean, obviously you want to win series, and with the Brewers 16 games above 500, they can afford a series loss, no doubt, and we can for sure take another road trip in which you go four-and-two and continue to see the win-loss record move up a little bit more. It would be 39 and 32 if they could win this series against Milwaukee. I don't even want to think about what it would be 40 and 31, by the way, if they swept them, but that's uh it's more likely the reverse happens than that actually occurring. But the big thing is they gotta stay in tow with the St. Louis Cardinals and try and keep that within a game or two back of them after. Now, I mean, obviously there's a long season ahead and all that, but naturally you want to take this series by series, and if you're gonna do that, you want them to be able to take two out of three against Milwaukee. And honestly, you want to see the offense continue to hit. They hit pretty well in Toronto, aside from, you know, and I blew up on them, but aside from Tuesday's game, the Phillies were able to actually put together really good at bats, and five out of their last six games, their offense has been fine. You know, their starting pitching has been more or less of the problem. Now, in Toronto it wasn't, but at home against the White Sox it was. So hopefully we can see a series against Milwaukee where both are good, and both can give the team a chance to win the series. And we'll see if they can do just that, but we're not going to hold our breath on it here. Thanks everyone for tuning into this episode. We'll be back on throughout the weekend, and of course, uh, we should be back on shortly, not just talking about the Phillies, but Eagles, Sixers, Flyers, Penn State football. We'd like to get into a little bit of that soon as well. So thanks everyone for tuning in, and we'll talk to you next time.
