After another bleak outing from Andrew Painter in the series finale vs the Marlins, Painter has been optioned to AAA. We break that down and discuss the Phillies' offense breaking out in a series win vs the Marlins, with the Mets on the horizon! #RingTheBell #PhiladelphiaPhillies #MLBonX
The Phillies take two out of three from the Miami Marlins here this past week, but unfortunately they would see their hopeful future number one starting pitcher, at least the Phillies hope he turns out to be one day a number one starting pitcher. Andrew Painter sent down to triple A. We had a first time for a lot of things, and it was the first ever career hit and the first ever career home run for Gabriel Riconis Jr., as we'll get into that into this episode, and of course we preview the three-game upcoming series against the New York Mets. We'll get into that a lot of the start times as well, coming up here this weekend. But we, of course, start with, in chronological order, as always, with game one of this series. So after being shut out in two out of their last three, Zach Wheeler took to the mound, and he gave the Phillies another Zach Wheeler, vintage Zack Wheeler-esque performance, going six innings, allowed no runs on two hits with three walks and nine strikeouts. Now he said after the game he didn't think it was his best start. Well, if you know that's not having your stuff, then man, I want to see really what you look like with your stuff, because he gave up two runners there in the first, got out of it, and then that pretty much continued to be the theme throughout the game. He would allow runners on with a little traffic and continue to get out of the inning. He was just matchful. In the one inning he gave up the leadoff, I believe it was a leadoff walk, and then he strikes out the side. One, two, three. So just impressive stuff out of Zach Wheeler. And then you had Gabriel Riconas Jr., whom I think really gave the Phillies a huge lift, hammering his first homer of the season. And the reason why I say that is because coming off of the weekend that they had, I think it was important for them to get an early lead. They did that, and it went on to a barrage of hits where run scored in the next uh four innings for the Phillies. They played two more in the third, they would plate two more in the fifth with the JT Romuto two run homer, they'd add some insurance in the eighth, and they would shut out the Marlins seven to nothing, and it was good because it gave Johan Duran in the back end of that bullpen another day to just, you know, be off their feet, not have to pitch in any stretch uh really tenuous innings, so that was good to see as well. Now with Riconas being a guy who's been a top prospect for the Phillies, I probably should have come on last Friday when he made his first career start and talked about it a little bit, but they lost to Mizarowski and the Brewers and just completely uh completely slipped my mind on that one. But we do have audio here from Don Mattingley and Reconus after the game in regards to his first career home run on his first hit and his first at-bat at Citizens Bank Park.
SPEAKER_06Well, it was good obviously good for him, good for us, got on the board, but to see the kid get his first hit, uh get that out of the way. You don't want to see that ever get extended where it's uh lengthens out. Uh so that was obviously huge. And then really the second at bat I liked from the standpoint of putting the ball in play there, you know, where he controlled the zone enough to get himself a pitch to put the ball in play, got us an extra run.
SPEAKER_04Gabriel, congratulations. Uh is it everything you could have imagined when you were a kid growing up in uh Venezuela and Scott Link and more I don't even know what to say.
SPEAKER_08I'm gonna become a little bit of a little bit of a still. It's gonna take days to the limited minute. Um it's gonna be gonna be the bigger person. I mean, that that was I mean, uh I can only dream of stuff like that. Like that's that's stuff like in daydream. Ah man, I I'm so grateful for them. That was awesome.
SPEAKER_03It's always a special moment when you get to see those young guys get their first career big league SWAT, and it's just a awesome and when it's their first hit, it you know, Felix Reyes had that earlier in the year as well. It's unbelievable. But obviously, when you can do that and you can pick up the win, it makes it that much more better. But then yesterday's game was a bit different because the bottom of the order was what really propelled the Phillies to that win on Monday night. But Tuesday night, it wasn't so much the bottom of the order as it was the top of the order really producing. Uh Brandon Marsh. So he leads off this game as Trey Turner sits. He got hit in the wrist the night before. The X-rays came back negative, they gave him a day off yesterday. It was good to get Brandon Marsh even further up in the order. Remember, he was hitting down in the order in the beginning of the year, then he climbed up to the cleanup hitter. Now he was leading off last evening, and Brandon Marsh ends up having another solid game. One for three with two RBIs. Uh, but Alec Bohm was the real story of this one, and he's the reason why he was our intro song. He was two for four with a home run, an RBI single on the bottom of the first. That first run would put runners at for Bryson Stott would then put runners at the corners, and former Philly and uh South Jersey native Tyler Phillips took to the bump back at CBP for the first time in a couple years. Remember, he had that shutout against the Cleveland Guardians, and he really struggled in this one mightily. And Bryson Stott hit his third triple of the year, a two-run triple to make it three-nothing. Then in the bottom of the second, with a runner at first, Brandon Marsh belted one to left center field. Brandon Marsh going Oppo. Now it wasn't too str dead left field, but it was left center, so pretty good by Brandon Marsh there. And then Kyle Schwarber gets on for Alec Bohm. 2-0 pitch, and Alec Bohm hits his ninth homer of the year. Two of them in the inning both hit both their ninth homers of the season. Schwarber would add another one. Now, this was important to give Jesus Lazardo an early lead because Lazardo had really struggled in his previous couple starts. He hadn't really seemed like himself entirely. You know, he pitched pretty well against Toronto. But at home, he pitched well against Toronto, really well against Toronto. But at home this year, he has just not been himself. He's really struggled. But he goes seven innings, allowing two runs on five hits, nine strikeouts, and two walks. And again, you don't have to see Johan Duran or Orion Kirkering or Jose Alvarado. Uh Brad Keller, they announced he would be placed on the I. Keller, whom, you know, obviously when I was last on, he just doesn't look like himself. And forearm tendonitis is the issue with Keller. Now, they just spent eleven million dollars for him this season. You don't want that to be something worse, so hopefully the 10-day I. But I think it's it was going to be important regardless, even if it wasn't anything that was physically wrong with him, even if it was just him needing to figure stuff out mentally, or if it was physically, like just mechanically, that you know, he and Caleb Cotham would need to go to work on. It was going to be probably something you saw anyways, where he would be dropped into middle relief in the pitch, the sixth inning, seventh inning if he was facing, you know, maybe the bottom of the order of whatever team they're going against, and Orion Kirkring was going to need to step up in that spot as your top righty behind Duran. I mean, he's been numbers-wise your best reliever aside from Duran. I'll be honest with you, though. Do I still have faith in Kirkring? Or do I have faith in Kirkring? I have more faith in Kirkring at this point than Keller and Alvarado, but given kind of what we've seen out of Kirkering in his career, and given still what happened in Game 4 last year, I can't totally sit here and say, man, I'm 100% confident in him going out there. Now that his workload is being bumped up a little bit, what are we going to see? Are we going to see the same guy that threw the game away in game four? Or are we going to see a guy that's going to go out there and he's going to take advantage of the opportunity? We love comeback stories. We'd love to see that out of Orion Kirkring for sure. So the Phillies get the 8-2 win. Pretty cool. The broadcast team was in the stands calling the game. But then that's set up today. An opportunity to sweep the Miami Marlins out of CBP and really ride a hot streak heading into the Mets series. Now, we'll get more into some of the scheduling stuff with the Mets in a moment. But today was pretty disheartening, to say the least. And specifically out of one guy. I mean, listen, there's only one man here that we really need to talk about, and that's Andrew Painter. Yet again, for the third start in a row, he was bad. And it was bad early. He strikes out the leadoff hitter, Liam Hicks, and he gives up a walk to Otto Lopez. Alright, it's a walk, you can still get out of the inning, and a 2-2 pitch that Stubbs calls away, fastball away, he puts it middle in, and Kyle Stowers sends it out and right. Gets out of it from that point on, gets out of the inning, it's 2-0. Phillies, Trey Turner singles back in the lineup, leads off the game with a single. It was kind of interesting, you know, to see him back in the leadoff role, but you know, singles. And then Trey Turner steals as Kyle Schwarber strikes out. Harper singles into right. Runners at the corners for Marsh, he makes it two to one. Alec Bohm, two to two. And unfortunately the Phillies don't get any more, but it's like, okay, we're tied up at two again. And then that would be it. As Casey on an 0-1 pitch, again a fastball, Stubbs won it away. He leaves it middle in, and Owen Casey deposits it into deep right. He gets a strikeout on Marseille, he walks Mac, double to Ruiz, single to Hicks, gets Lopez to fly out, Stours an RBI double, Xavier Edwards an RBI single, and it's six to two. And you're just going are you kidding me? And the Phillies, in their half of the inning, they're able to get back into the game, make it 6-4, but unfortunately the offense didn't, you know, do anything really the rest of the day, but it wasn't, you know, the offense's issue that I have, although, yeah, it would have been nice for them to have, you know, retaken the lead and maybe gone up, but I just, you know, with having to taxi your bullpen, there was really going to be little chance the Phillies were going to win this game regardless. Andrew Painter needed to give them more and he didn't. And you can just tell, in my opinion, it's all mental with him. Now, you're going to hear from him in a second, and he's going to describe some of the things that might be going on with him mechanically, but I really believe a lot of it is mental, and here you go. Here was Andrew Painter afterwards.
SPEAKER_05You know, just kind of leaving fastballs over play, the fastballs are just getting hit right now. So, you know, I think we just gotta evaluate and and just trying to find out who I am as a pitcher right now. So just trying to navigate through that.
SPEAKER_06How frustrating is that for you right now?
SPEAKER_05Very. Yeah, it's very frustrating. Um, you know, you want to go out there and have success all the time. So uh not being able to do that has been very hard.
SPEAKER_09How is your uh confidence level right now?
SPEAKER_05You know, it's about as good as it can be right now under the circumstances, you know, still just going out there and being convicted with every pitch, um trying to stay aggressive in the zone. And um, you know, if I want to give up runs, I'd I'd rather uh get hit around than than than walk the guy. So uh just continue to stay aggressive in the zone.
SPEAKER_07Is there anything we can do to get it some more light and want to be pre-C?
SPEAKER_05Yeah, um I mean we're trying. Um we've been we've been searching for some things and um it's gotten a little better than what it was, uh, but still obviously not not to the extent of of what it was pre-TJ. So um just trying to make adjustments and figure out what's gonna have the most success.
SPEAKER_00Is that something you can like feel out of your hand? It does it feel the same way it did before surgery? Is it any different?
SPEAKER_05Um I can definitely feel the good ones. Um I think you can tell there's a difference. Um, you know, numbers aside, um I think when I throw a good fastball with a little more life, I can kind of feel it out of the hand, whereas the ones that um are a little flatter and kind of cut a little bit, I can definitely feel those.
SPEAKER_01You were saying find out who you are as a pitcher. You you I'm sure know yourself better than anybody. Who do you think you are right now as a pitcher?
SPEAKER_05Yeah, right now um you know I've had to lean heavily on spin. Um sweeper and sliders have been great for me. Um early in the year the changeup was great, and right now I'm kind of searching for it. It's kind of been a consistent kind of cut. Um it's not really near the depth, so um just continue to kind of hone in on that stuff and and work on the stuff in um in between in between each start and um just try to protect those things.
SPEAKER_09Well, when you don't have the fastball the way you want it to have it, how difficult does that make it for you to kind of get out to get through the game?
SPEAKER_05It's very tough. It's very tough. Um, you know, I think you can have the best secondary stuff in the world, but um everything kind of plays off the fastball. So I think when you're when you're locating the fastball and you can work to both sides of the plate and kind of put it where you want it, um everything just gets a lot easier from there.
SPEAKER_03Now, last Friday after the game one against the Brewers, where Painter went out and you know, had a couple rough innings, and he ultimately, you know, I think he surrendered five in that game to the Brewers on and the big home run um that really blew it open. And the Phillies were obviously no match from Mizarrowski. But in that game, I thought that a lot of his stuff looked pretty good. It's just when traffic got on, he could not compartmentalize a lot of just that's in the past. You know, that just happened, okay, he's on first. I have to all I'm doing, oh, the only thing that's changing here is I'm not pitching from the windup, I'm pitching from the stretch. You know, I'm not even gonna bother with the guy at first because I'm focused on getting two more outs. Or, you know, gotta get these next three outs, gotta figure out a way to bear down here. And he just it just doesn't seem like he's doing that. It feels like and I don't know really when this started. I thought originally I thought it was because JT wasn't catching him, and that was in LA. You know, when JT left that game and they had to bring a Marshawn, that was the issue where it was like, okay, maybe it's just, you know, hey, he's faces facing the Dodgers lineup. Hey, you know, it's a you know, we know with Rafael Marshawn he's not the same catcher as JT Real Muto. But it doesn't it seems like you could put anyone behind that plate at this point and it's gonna I mean you could put Yogi Berra back there at this point and he's gonna have a tough time navigating through hitters. Now, could it be something where maybe because as he mentions in there time and time again about the Tommy John surgery, no, if he really is struggling with that at this point, because that was three years ago he had Tommy John surgery, and he pitched all of last year. If he is at the point to where he cannot navigate that, and now that we know that, because before that wasn't necessarily something that we knew that it was, well, he has a struggle feel-wise for it coming out of his hand compared to before, it's like, okay, well, why did what why did you decide to put you all your eggs in one basket with him if you were just hoping he was going to figure it out? Now, I understand doing that, but eventually I would think he would start to come out of it. Because, I mean, when you're at this level and you have the support system you have with the Phillies starting five, I mean, Zach Wheeler's had Tommy John surgery before. He's bounced through it. I mean, you know, I I don't know if you really would take advice from him, but there are times where Aaronola has struggled. Christopher Sanchez, a perfect guy, or Jesus Lazardo, guys who have struggled and have been able to figure it out either in starts, in games, or just in general and between starts. I mean, it just doesn't seem like anything that and I'd like to think they're talking to him, but if they are, you know, I mean, I'm sure Caleb Cotham is, obviously, and Don Mattingley, it's just not hitting home. And when he's out there on the mound, you just do not see a confident guy out there at all. And it's really, really disappointing. And today the Phillies made the decision to send Painter down to Triple A. Now we don't know who's going to be coming up for Andrew Painter. It's expected to be Alan Ron Hell, who has been called up before to the big club, but he hasn't, you know, really gone out there and, you know, truly been given an opportun much of an opportunity. He's pitched in one game, you know, in uh this season. And he gave up a run on three hits and three innings. So, you know, he's had some experience in the past as well. This was the 7-2 loss to the Cubs on the road. But he's had some experience in his career as well with the big club uh in 2025. So last year he pitched eleven innings in five games, didn't start any, allowed three runs on ten hits, allowed a home run, total of 174 pitches, so the experience is there, absolutely. Or like the experience of just being called up, but in terms of actually starting a game, he has yet to do so. But this year he's pitched 70 innings, he's got a 399 ERA, and he's three and four in AAA. So, through eleven starts and fourteen appearances, those are his numbers. And obviously, we'll see if it's him if his if it's his name that gets the call yet again. But more importantly, you know, at this point you're kind of just throwing anything at the wall and seeing if it'll stick. Now, if they're gonna call him up, I think at the same time they need to go out and make a signing. And I'll tell you who I would pick for the Phillies. There is there are I'm sure others out there that they could look at, but the one guy that I would sit there and say, you know what, he should be given an opportunity here, whether it's you know, wet whether or not he's been continuously throwing, I'd like to think he is if he still has hopes of getting back into the biggs. He hasn't signed with anyone yet, but we've seen in the past this be a similar thing. And it's Tyler Anderson. A former two-time All-Star who last made the All-Star team in 2024, made it again in 22 when he was pitching for the Dodgers, who was a former first-round pick of the Colorado Rockies in 2011. He is 36, so there's that as well, but you gotta get someone in there that can at least mentally take the mound and get through it. He had a 4 5 6 ERA last year. He was 2 8 in 26 starts. It's not great, but at least it gives you a chance. I mean, it takes over Painter Spot, who wasn't giving you a chance at all. And I guess at minimum. He could be a little bit better than Aranola. Or at the very least, he could at least give you some of what Aranola's given you, which is it's not great, but there are still a couple of starts. At any level, shape, or form, it's far more in a way better than what you were getting from Andrew Painter. And you can at least hopefully rely on the guy to get you anywhere between 12 and 15 outs and keep it to within three or four runs. I mean, that's kind of all we're asking right now out of one of those two guys to at least make me come on here and talk more about the fact that you stunk in the first two innings. Because at least I can sit here and go, well, the offense didn't help him out. The offense didn't do him any favors either. You know, stuff like that. Today I couldn't do that. Because when Painter left and he had to taxi the bullpen, and then he had to bring in Tanner Banks, who, while the defense of the Phillies didn't help him, he struggled as well. So ultimately, we'll see what Dave Dombrowski and the Phillies decide to go there. But, you know, we talk about the right-handed bat, and we'd preferably like it to be someone who could play the outfield, but Phillies obviously looking to add a right-handed bat at the deadline. I think you can also add a reliable starter, which is another issue for this team. I mean, how many times are we going to sit here and say, well, they need to add because it was the same thing two years ago. Well, they need to get a starter. Will they need to get a right-handed bat? Will they need to get a closer? Will they need to get this? It's like it's not even just little moves on the margins. It's not even like, man. And even if it was a starter, like it's not like it's we just need, you know, that, and that's it. Like it's oh, we we need to grab a Cliff Lee or a Roy Oswald or a Joe Blandon. And, you know, that can take us to where we want to go. That's not the case. Now, what's on the horizon is a three-game series with the New York Mets. So this is kind of a funny series. And first, so the Phillies come into the series, they're a game back of the fourth wildcard spot that's being occupied currently by the Cardinals. The Padres currently are a game and a half back of them. It's a currently the Padres by the fact of I think one by a half a game, they have a lead over the Nationals because they're one up in the loss column. So it's 0.521 win percentage for the Padres is 0.520 for the Nationals and 0.520 for the Cubs. Now, the Phillies who sit fifth in the National League wildcard standings, and everyone expected the New York Mets to be right there with them. Well, the New York Mets are 33-41. They're five and a half games back out of a wildcard spot. Funny enough, their run differential is one better than the Phillies at minus 17 to the Phillies, minus 18. But the Mets are 5-5 in their last ten. They just lost two out of three to the Reds on the road. And I mean everything right now in flushing is just as bad as I think it's been in the now six years that Cones owned the team. But it's still Phillies and Mets. You know, it doesn't matter if the Red Sox stink, that series against the Yankees, they're still going to give it their all. However, with the Mets, Lindor's on the I.L. Now he might still be in the dugout, but he's on the I. L. The next guy with really that like understanding of how impactful of a series Phillies Mets is and how much their fans care about it, the next guy in line to really explain it to some of the younger guys the Mets have called up would be like either a David Peterson or a Francisco Alvarez, Brett Beatty's there, they got Vientos as well. But like, you know, it's not it's not Pete Alonso, it's not Brandon Nemo, it's not Lindore, it's not guys whom you know have heard the booze of CBP and understand that the team across the dugout is a team that they that the fans and they dismay. And on the Philly side, we know a lot of times, you know, with big rivalries, you throw the records out of the out of the window, and it's all that matters in this next three games, and that's the way the Phillies need to treat this. They can't look at this and go, the Mets are 33 and 41. No, the met the Mets are 33 and 41, but don't relax against them is my point. Don't let them have an opportunity to do something here. You know, keep them down. Don't lax against them and say, uh, well, we we lost two out of three, but oh well, we'll get them next time. No. Go out there and take two out of three, and if you have the opportunity to sweep. Because what you're trotting out here on Saturday and Sunday, I mean, you take advantage of it if you get the first game. Which we'll see tomorrow night, with Aaron Nola taking them out. He's three and four with five eight six CRA. Now, if probably Lindor was starting, I would give you numbers from past years. But as I mentioned, Nola hasn't faced collectively this lineup in one way, shape, or form. I mean, it's a lot of new faith. Now, he's seen Soto enough. I mean, him and Juan Soto, you know, Soto knows what Nola's gonna throw him, and Nola knows Soto's hotspots in the zones and all that stuff over now seven years of going against each other. So that doesn't really matter. You know, it it's time to get down to business. But what I found interesting, and numbers that I pulled instead were numbers from at home this year. And Nola is 0-1 with a 6-2-1 ERA at home. He hasn't gone more than five innings at all. Now, for the what they're paying him, that's pathetic. And as much as I just sat there and said, well, you know, at least with Aaron Nola compared to Andrew Painter, that's not a pass towards Nola and Nola's got to be better. And I'm sure he knows that. And he's got to go out there and at the very least give them a chance. Because Sean Manai is on the other side. He's one-and-2 with a four-seven eight ERA. He only has one start this year in 15 appearances. He's one and three with a 5'8 seven ERA versus the Phillies since 2022. That's in five starts and seven appearances. He's pitched nine and two, he pitched nine and two thirds innings last year against the Phillies in two starts, gave up six runs on 11 hits. This year on the road, he's 1-1 with a 4-7-4-5-7 ERA this season in seven appearances. So there's our Manaya's numbers. Now, the Phillies will have the off day on Friday. Why is that? Well, in case you're sleeping under a rock or in case you just watch baseball day long and don't know what else is going on in the sports world. The World Cup is in town. And it's going to be Brazil versus Haiti on Friday. So the schedule gets interrupted for a little soccer. Now you could say, well, why don't they play during the day? I don't really think you'd want to do that either, because the Brazil and Haiti fans will probably have been out there since noon. So to avoid that, they've decided to scrap that for the Phillies. And, you know, you could make the argument, well, why aren't they playing on the road? You know, because you're interrupting the schedule. I'd understand that argument too, but they get the day off Friday, and then Saturday it's going to be, which actually, before I get to that, if I may, for this World Cup, just real quick, if I could preach for like 10 to 15 seconds here on it, I think it is the best decision that American sports has ever made having the World Cup here. It's been I mean, watching Lionel Messi score a hat trick in Kansas City, Missouri at Arrowhead Stadium is unbelievable. Because, number one, why the hell Kansas City for a game? You know, that's not it. You imagine it to be in one of the bigger markets on the coasts, or if it's, you know, maybe in a city like a Chicago or, you know, even like a Denver. I mean, Phoenix might be too hot, you know, but you could still it there's a retractable roof in Phoenix. It's just, it's one of those things that just makes it great. And obviously it's in Philly, and you know, Ivory Coast and Ecuador looked like a lot of fun, and this has just been an excellent tournament. I love the World Cup every four years it comes on, and I wish it was like every two years because it's really a lot of fun. Now, back to baseball and back to the Phillies. On Saturday, Christopher Sanchez will take the bump. He's 8-3 with 182 ERA this season. Got knocked around against Milwaukee. It was his worst start in about two months. He's 5-1 with an 0-9-0 ERA at home this year and nine starts. Some obviously impressive stuff out of Christopher Sanchez, but having that ERA at home is unbelievable. Freddie Peralta takes them out for the Mets. Big offseason acquisition for them this past year. 5-5 with a 3-9-0 ERA. He has a 1-2-9 ERA versus the Phillies since 2022 in four starts. No decisions in all of them. Phillies were 2-2 in those games. But the last time he pitched at CBP was in 2022, and the Phillies won that game 4-2. So hopefully bigger, wider number score Phillies win, and hopefully that'll be the case on Saturday. He's 2-2 with the 279 ERA on the road this year in five starts. So there's some interesting information there. Now, game three on Sunday, we'll see Zach Wheeler take them out. 6-1 with a 201 ERA are Wheeler's numbers. He is 3-0 with a 1-7-80RA at home in four starts. He's gone at least six in each start at home, and he's pitched into the seventh and three. Now on Sunday, right now it's listed as TBD here on Wednesday. They have until obviously Sunday to announce the starter. It could be David Peterson taking the mound. I would assume with kind of the look of because they've been having bullpen games, and Peterson pitched the final three innings against the Reds the other day, but he's got the most experience against this Phillies team. We'll talk about his numbers in a second. But it might be him. He's 3-5 with a 5-9-1 ERA this year and seven starts. He's 0-3 at the 5-1-7 ERA versus the Phillies. And he's 2-2 at the 4-5-0 ERA on the road this year. Now I don't care who it is that makes the start for them. But if you're the Phillies, you got Zach Wheeler going and you look at TBD, win that game. You got Christopher Sanchez going, and you got an opportunity there to beat Freddie Peralta, win that game. Now the thing with Minaia, and the other reason why it could be Peterson is the same reason that I'm about to say with Mania. Mania's a lefty. And we know the Phillies struggle have had struggles this year with lefties. Although they they didn't in the last couple starts, and then they'll be facing Peralta's righty. But I'd like to think that the Phillies may actually be getting out of that left-handed issue. Maybe. I mean we'll see. Knock on wood. But I mean they have to go out there and handle business against the New York Mets. As I said earlier, I get it's a big rivalry. I understand that in these situations you throw the numbers out the window. Take advantage. And especially against the Mets. I mean, like any other team. Any other team but the Mets.
