SPEAKER_00I mean So nice, you got to watch it twice, and about twenty-four hours apart from each other as the Philadelphia Phillies surprisingly excitingly emphatically come back to take the lead in the top of the ninth against the Washington Nationals. Welcome as we welcome you back into another episode of the 610 Podcast. I'm your host, Jay Hollyhan, just I mean There's nothing more that you can say other than downright incredible. Absolutely incredible. I mean, maybe one of the best things is that once again I was coming back home. I was coming back home. Same exact same exact story that I told you last night, the same thing happened. I'm stopping at every red light, I'm like, I'm not getting any updates here. I get a long red light, nothing. Stop off for something to eat. I don't want my curiosity to get the better of me. I wait until I get all the way home, still no update. I'm like, did it happen again? Come in. Look at the TV. And Duran's pitch, I'm like, oh my god. They did it again. And tonight, Derek Hill's the hero. You know the guy you got to replace Adolius Garcia? Who you just watched in the series prior against the Chicago White Sox. He's the man of the hour. I mean, it's just, you know, what else can you say other than what a wacky, weird, goofy, whatever word you want to describe it, game baseball is. It's just, it's that kind of a sport. You never know what's gonna happen. It's why you play nine innings, it's why you always have the mindset that, you know, when you get into the batter's box, you got a chance to make something happen. And that's what the Phillies did. I thought a brilliant decision was to let Kyle Schwarber bat in the ninth. Uh because of the fact that he can change the game in one in one swing of the bat. He does a tremendous job working the count, gets on first, Stubbs comes in, and he'll send one out. I thought Aaron Nola pitched. Fine. I mean, it's exactly what I said for him to do last night. You know, if this were Christopher Sanchez going out there, I mean a g you know, a solid start for Christopher Sanchez, not a great start, but a solid start is like, okay, when, you know, six innings, limited damage, gave up like two runs, had a bunch of punch outs. Fernola, it's he goes five innings, gives up three runs. Like, okay, that's a that's that might be your best start of the year, dude. You know, that that's one of the clubhouse leaders. I mean, is it acceptable? Absolutely the hell not. The money they're paying him. Um, I I mean I don't want to get too far off topic here, but if you have a way to get out of that contract, do it. Now the problem is there's nothing down in the system to come up. I mean, there's Painter, but you don't have anyone really there aside from him. It's not like Abel and Painter are there anymore. It's just Painter, and he's got to figure his own stuff out. And I'm not saying you move Nola now. I mean, it wouldn't hurt if you had something down there, but wait until probably the year ends and then maybe explore your options. Um, if there are any to even explore. But I see David Peterson just got traded to the Cubs, so if you're looking for someone to get you 15 outs, but you gotta pay 'em a ridiculous contract, you know, be my guest. Anyways. The Phillies. I gotta tell ya, I I mean they do a terrific job at just moving the lineup. And after they struggled against Palmquist to start the game, and then they get going in the fourth, Stot, RBI double, sackfly for JT, Raconis, RBI single. They do a terrific job of not needing the long ball until obviously the ninth. So they do a good job of of just getting enough, getting a lead, and then unfortunately giving the lead back, which, you know, let's face it. Bacchus, who's just returned, and then you got Bolan in the game there in the sixth. They were brutal. Bolin's been hit or miss all year. Uh Seth Johnson actually picks up the win for tonight, but you know, you look at everyone that appeared tonight, Nola, now a 558 ERA, Bacchus, 523 ERA, Bolan, 3.80 ERA, Jose Alvarado, 6.11 ERA. Seth Johnson, 6.75, and then Johan Duran, 1.69. Duran's gotta be taking uh Diego Daniello up to John Middleton and Dave Dombrowski and saying you gotta get me some serious help. Because this is pathetic. I mean w we we need some help here in the pen. Whether it's and listen, everyone and their grandmother is gonna look for bullpen pitching. And the first team that's probably gonna be lining up in on that line is actually the Nationals. Because back-to-back nights, you're an out away from a save, from a win. And you can't get it because of your bullpen, they're gonna be sitting there first in line looking for pitching. Bullpen. You you know the Dodgers probably gonna be there. Maybe the Braves, the Yankees, the heavy hitters. You gotta be in line with them. Now, let me get to something in a minute here uh about the trade deadline, if I may. But what I loved about this win, and last night's win, of course, but this one as well was it was the depth. Derrick Hill coming in and and doing what he did, delivering in that moment. And I'll say this the last couple seasons we didn't really get that out of the Phillies. I mean, yeah, they won 90 plus games. Yes, they won the NL East. But in 2022, guys stepped up on that team that you and I mean, Derek Hall, when Bryce Harper gets hurt, Derek Hall comes right in. Does a great job. Not that he replaced Bryce Harper, but he did a fantastic job when he got called up. Nick Maton, when they needed him, he stepped up. Matt Veerling stepped up in a humongous way. And I'll tell you one thing. One of the biggest and it's probably I mean, Matt Verling hasn't really done anything of late in the majors, but when you think about where he was trajected, you know, where he was going at the time, and they trade him away for Gregory Soto, that's pathetic in and of itself. But I'll say this about the night tonight with Derek Hill. It's a guy stepping up that you wouldn't expect to step up, but it just goes to show you, you know, hey, this team has some serious depth to it, this team has some serious umph to it. They're now a season high, eight games above 500, which again, if this were two months ago, you'd be sitting here telling me that there's no way that that would happen. I mean, you gotta be kidding me with that. Like, you you know, get where do you smoke and let me have some of it, kind of thing. Now, let's uh let's open it up to some interviews. Uh let's hear from Don Mattingley, Derrick Hill, and Kyle Schwerber on the win.
SPEAKER_03You know, he's been working, and and again, I think when we acquired him, we knew he'd play all three outfield spots, hit left-handed pitching. He's actually been okay with the righties, too. He's got his hits, so uh we were able to leave him in there. So it's obviously really good to see that. It was obviously huge at bat, 10-pitch walk. Uh got that, you know, give us the opportunity. Uh really good at bat. So it was great. I think it's hard. I think it's easier for older guys that kind of know they're swing, they walk up with a plan. He walks up with a plan every time, so I I don't think it's as tough for those guys. It's tougher for the younger guys doing that. So, yeah, I I think it is something that's it's always hard. Pinch it, it's tough because you get one shot. Um, but I think older guys are better at it, honestly, that kind of know their swings and been through a lot. I do want to talk about Nola a little bit. I think I think he did a nice job tonight. That's a tough lineup for him to run through. Uh I know he gives up the two solos, but he gives us five innings, he gets through those, you know, tough part of the order there in the fifth. Uh that was important for us. Obviously, we you know, we give up the homer there, but just got a slider up. But but Noah, I thought was again, he's the kind of guy I've I've learned to appreciate more and more just the way he continues to fight, continues to make pitches. He may he may bend a little bit, but he just doesn't give in and stop pitching. You know, he's a guy that keeps working, so I've really come to appreciate you know what he does.
SPEAKER_02Uh great, great A-B out of Swarber coming off the bench. Obviously, he's been dealing with a little stuff, but to go out there and give us everything he had, that was incredible.
SPEAKER_05You know, Derek, you know, you're relatively new to Philadelphia, but you keep doing what you did yesterday by extending that in and then the pinch hit home run tonight to give the Phillies a lead the eventual win. Uh you're gonna be like like Martial mode. I don't know about all that.
SPEAKER_02I don't know about all that. That man is being on a different level here in Philly. But uh, no, it's it's incredible to be over here. Uh great group of guys, they welcome me in with open arms. The fans are amazing here, as everybody knows around the league, so it's just a blessing. Obviously, I couldn't do this without the man upstairs. So it's it's incredible. Give me an idea.
SPEAKER_04Uh I mean, you have four-pitch at home runs, how hard it is to get a hit like last night, but then do what you did here tonight because you had a few foul balls that before that home run, and uh, you know, that seemed to get your timing down a little bit.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I mean, ever since coming over here, the the hitting department downstairs, we've been working day and night, honestly, and uh got tip my cap to those guys. They're getting me into the proper positions to go out there and succeed.
SPEAKER_04Well, listen, go enjoy it. This was incredible. These last two nights have been unbelievable, haven't they?
SPEAKER_02Oh, you're not lying there. That's baseball ever, right here in Philly.
SPEAKER_01Pretty cool two two game sequence we had, but uh just uh to see how you know he went in there and he had that bat. See how he's working, he's doing some, you know, he's been making some really good adjustments since he got to us, and uh seeing the work that he's been able to put in, and he works extremely hard and he fits right in with our group and uh to see him go out there and have that big swing put us ahead. It's it's really cool.
SPEAKER_00Well, obviously a lot of concerns with Kyle Schwarber. You know, with what happened with the back tightness, uh hopefully he's gonna be okay moving forward. Hopefully he'll be back in the lineup after pinch hitting tonight. You know, last night Mattingley said, you know, it seemed like it was getting better, and then that kind of gave you hope he'd be back in the lineup tonight, but it wasn't. So he pinch hits. Um some really interesting stuff there, you know, from Derek Hill. Where you know, we all the time talk about how great of a clubhouse the Phillies have where guys come in and they step up right away and they're able to play well. Wasn't it kind of interesting that the Phillies, the last couple I mean, this is if that's what's being put out there that, you know, teams feel that way. Because you said that's a sentiment felt by um a lot of teams in Major League Baseball. Well, why is it that the Phillies do not get guys? Why is it that they are so held back on signing guys in the offseason? And I'll say this. With the Braves losing tonight to the San Diego Padgers, and the Phillies now four and a half games back in the NL East. Now, what I want you to do if you've maybe not now, but if you have the time, take a look at the standings in the American League. Look at the teams, look at all the teams who are above 500. And ask yourself, do any of those teams scare you? If the answer is no, then you're on the right track. Because uh there should be one team that's gonna sit there and go, well, I mean This is the most obvious team of them all, and it's of course the New York Yankees. No team in the American League should fully scare you. And if you're the Phillies seeing what you've seen over these past two months, do you make the decision, you know what? Let me send a full court press at the trade deadline. Let me get a bat. Let me get a serious bat. Preferably someone who can play the outfield, in order to make this a true World Series contender. Make this a team that can compete with the likes of the Dodgers, with the likes of the Braves, and with the Brewers in the National League. They gotta make an addition. And they gotta do it. Now, do they have the farm system to do it? We'll see. Hopefully, yes, and that could possibly make all the difference, or hopefully make all the difference in October. But I'll tell you what. That I'm sure a lot of people are saying, thank goodness they hired Don Mattingley as the bench coach in the offseason. Because while Rob Thompson was a fine manager, and you know, it's it it's un it's a shame to villainize him and to talk ill of him, but you can see the difference with the fight within this team throughout the season. It's not even just uh like with with Rob, it was, well, he's the quote unquote substitute teacher. Well, with Mattingley, it's not like that because Mattingley has been a manager at the major league level. And I really do believe that they are taking to what he is telling them in an even bigger way than what they took from Rob in 22. I really do. We'll see what that means future wise, but right now it has been a joy to see, and hopefully it continues in tomorrow with Christopher Sanchez on the bump and Kate Cavalli for the Nationals, as the Phillies hope to take three of four and move to once again a season high best nine games above five hundred. And I I wouldn't have said this a week ago, I definitely wouldn't have said this a month, two months ago, but try and chase down the Atlanta Braves for the NL East. Thanks for tuning in, and we'll talk to you next time.
SPEAKER_08Anyone know?
