Welcome in, ladies and gentlemen, to another episode of the Six Ten Podcast, and that's right. The Philadelphia Phillies are in a free fall. They have free falled their way from being eleven games above 500 to now being just five games above 500. They freefalled their way to being two and a half games back in the NL East to now being six games back in the NL East. They had the five seed in the postseason, at one point had the four seed in the postseason, battling with the Chicago Cubs for the top seed, and now they sit just a mere game and a half ahead of the San Diego Padres. Folks, I'm not gonna sugarcoat it. There might be some other podcasts that will, I won't. This Philadelphia Phillies season has taken a wrong turn, and I gotta tell you, I don't know how we're gonna get this season back on track. I really don't. I just think there's something going on within that clubhouse right now, because at this point, it's not just one thing that's going wrong. It's not like it's just the bullpen or the offense is just being inconsistent, but you know, at the times that they are consistent, well, the bullpen's there to nail it down. Or, man, they're not getting great starting pitching that time through the rotation, but at the very least, the offense has been winning some games, so you can at least hang your hat on that. I can't hang my hat right now on anything. We talked about Zach Wheeler not going out there and pitching well on Monday after, you know, the way he pitched against the Dodgers and on six days rest. Obviously, everyone was very concerned there might be something more wrong there, and we hope that that's not going to be the case. And from what we heard Monday evening, that doesn't sound like it's gonna be the case. But he didn't pitch well. And granted, it's Zach Wheeler, he's been a rock for you all year long, so okay, he's allowed a start where he struggles. And you need the offense to pick you up, and the offense picked him up. But what happened? Johan Duran couldn't get the save. And then Tuesday, Aaronola goes out and gives the Phillies everything you could ask from him. Everything looked like an actual starting pitcher. You know, granted, uh he gave up the home run, and you know, he didn't necessarily give you, you know, seven strong innings of just looking immaculate out there on the mound, but he gave you five and two-thirds of giving up a run, limited damage, and the bullpen w was big through two two and a third innings. The only problem, the offense could only muster up five base runners, and they were 0 for 5 with runners in scoring position, they left six on base, and for now, since the all-star break, that was the sixth time they were held to one run or fewer. And then today, which was honestly, as we talk about, and as I'm sure you've seen people today talk about, if you had the stomach to continue to listen to people talk about the Phillies, people spoke about is this rock bottom? You know, well, to be honest with you, I thought rock bottom was firing Rob Thompson and being 9-19 on the season. I didn't really think we'd hit another rock bottom. I figured they'd be as hot as they were, I figured they'd stumble a little bit, but hopefully there would be enough lessons learned from earlier in the season that we wouldn't be doing the things that they're doing right now, and the things we saw earlier in the year. And today, they have a 2-0 lead in the top of the third. Bryson Stott, two run double. Brian DeLacruz, sackfly in the fourth, three-nothing, Trey Turner, solo homer, four-nothing with a runner on, Bryce Harper, RBI triple five nothing. Bohm gets him home at 6-0 now, and you're thinking, man, 6-0 in the top of the fifth inning. Alright, this game is over. If you are a major league roster team, if you are a team that has any type of thoughts on the postseason, and you have 15 outs remaining, the game should be finished in the back pocket, W Dunzo. Just like the other night. Two-run lead with your closer on the mound, dunzo in the back pocket, especially at the point in the year where the Phillies are at, and the fact that they aren't playing their best baseball. The idea was on this road trip, it was expected to be two teams that you're gonna play that you know what you haven't played really well, but could you go four and two against the Marlins and the Orioles? Could you not lose a series? Could you win your first series out of the all-star break? And the Phillies find a way to lose this game, and that's been the theme for the majority of the year. Otto Lopez, RBI ground out to make it two outs. Alright, it's 6'1. But then a 6'3 game turn on a top on a 3-2 changeup left up in the zone. Listen, I don't know. I let's see here, as I'm going to see the tape here on who call or where the pitch was supposed to be. Looked like I mean, JT didn't really throw the glove up. He has the glove down on the dirt, so he quickly sees that it's coming up. I I so I don't know if if it was supposed to be a pitch up. I don't know if he wanted to bury that change up. But Hernandez didn't miss it, and he hits his 16th homer of the year. 6'3. RBI single for Otto Lopez against Lazardo. 1-0. By the way, why was Lazardo brought out for the bottom of the seventh? And I hear after the game, well, we had some guys down. What? It's late July. You need a win. He's done after six. Go to the bull. Well, we had some guys down. Enough. What happens if this game went to extra innings? Are we going to have some guys down then? You you needed to get outs at that point. You had to put players in the best position possible to get a win. And I hope for Don Mattingley's sake that that wasn't his decision to put him out there. Just like I hope there have been some other decisions since the All-Star break, and maybe even a little bit before, that weren't solely his decisions. I hope for his sake it was some MIT, Harvard, Yale grad makes the call down to the down to the dugout and says, hey, we need to get whoever lifted at that point. Although I would think that those people would say, Yeah, we need Lozardo out of the game, six innings, we're done, let's go get someone else. But then it's 6'4, and he puts Seth Johnson in. He gets an out to make it two outs, but then he walks Liam Hicks, and he didn't even look like he wanted a pitch to Liam Hicks. He looked completely overmatched against a lefty. Then he goes against Xavier Edwards, another lefty, two-run single. Now, I personally would have put in Jonathan Bolin. I guess it wouldn't have mattered, because then he gives up the two-run homer to Griffin Conine, and that was the game. And the Phillies blow a 6-0 lead. First time they've done that since 2022 against the Diamondbacks. Now I know a lot of people are going to sit there and go, Oh, well, the 22 team did that? Well, surely this team can No. That's not the same thing. That team, a bunch of those players had never made the postseason before, didn't fully understand what it took to make the postseason. They needed to make the postseason so that way, in my opinion, it was like a weight off their back and a total check mark and accomplishment. Hey, we got in. And then obviously, you know what followed that. This is not the case. These are players that have been there done that before. These are vets. These are big boys now. This isn't the daycare. This isn't oh well, you know, we're we got some guys in their late twenties. No. These guys should understand what it takes to make the postseason, and that you got a six-nothing g leading a game. It's finished. It's done. Right then and there. It's done. Now, the offense in the series, granite, put together 13 runs overall. And you think to yourself, alright, the Phillies pitching, hopefully that was enough to win the series. And as we know, it wasn't. But the Phillies' offense, as we talk about Tuesday night's one-nothing loss, has been up, down, and in circles. Here was Don Mattingley and Bryce Harper after Tuesday's game.

Um had some opportunities obviously. Well you heard last Sunday Alec Boehm mention that the pitching that the Phillies are facing is the reason why they're struggling. I know there are some teams around Major League Baseball that you know have not had the most prolific offenses, but to be honest with you, what I really think is happening, and this is my opinion on it, this isn't knowledge or anything like that coming from any higher ups or anything like, or you know, what's going through the grapevine. I really think a lockout is looming, and that's where these players' minds are at right now. Because I think you look through the American League, there's so much poor play going on, and the team you're about to face that, as I've mentioned here before, I also follow, they are two games back of a wild card spot, three games under 500. And when you consider some of the other teams in the National League and in the American League, there's been a lot of rough offense. I think that might have something to do with it. There's also just been some really this is kind of a strange year for baseball, to be honest with you, and I think a majority of it is because the vibe's kind of off because we don't know about next year. We don't know if there's going to be baseball played next year. We could not have baseball until 2028. Hell, we could not have baseball until when was the all-star break? About two weeks ago. We could not have baseball until halfway through July, and it looks like the COVID season. In, you know, even in the 2028 season. There could be an extended window for that, and then they come to an agreement and they push opening day back until later on in the spring or in the summertime. That could legitimately happen. Or there could be no season at all, because as I've said on here before, there should be enough for those major le for those players, enough in their quote unquote war chest, as I've heard other media members say, that they can survive off of it. That if any player's starting to get cold feet and they're saying, Oh, I don't know, I we we need to think about signing this thing, they can say, Hey, here's enough money to take care of you. Go away. Continue to do whatever it is you need to do, take care of your body, back to being with your family. The work stoppage continues. I think that could have a reason, but I feel like that's just making and I'm not trying to make an excuse for them because you know what? That's not here yet. Focus on what you need to focus on, and that's winning baseball games. And that's putting runs up on the board, and that's something the Phillies just are not doing right now. But now, after Tuesday's game as well, Bryce Harper talked about the Phillies needing help and the trade deadline. And here was Harper.

Anytime a player in any sport really, because the locker room in the clubhouse is supposed to be a sanctuary, anytime someone calls out their team or an event that happened or anything like that, you know, that's we keep that in house. When it kind of is shown that, hey, we need help, it's kind of you know, it sends a message to not only obviously who he's trying to send the message to to the front office, it also tells the fan base that your star player doesn't have faith that this team as currently constructed can reach the postseason and can go on a run. Which, granted, we already knew that. But I'll be honest with you. Look at the Phillies farm system. Who the hell are teams gonna want in that farm system? You can't tell me teams are gonna want Aiden Miller now. As I heard some people talk about, you know, just from a personal standpoint to have that many issues in you know your early twenties, just from a personal, like a person-to-person, human-to-human standpoint, that's really alarming, and something that's like, wow, I I really don't know if you should really be focused on baseball, you know, focus on, and I guess that is what he's ultimately doing now, focusing on just being able to have a ha happy and healthy life from that standpoint. Then you have Andrew Painter, and two, three years ago, Andrew Painter, big time prospect, supposed to be the next big thing in Major League Baseball, and for the Phillies. Well, you all I don't need to tell anyone on here that's listening to this what Andrew Painter looked like when he came up this year. Because it wasn't good enough. And then, of course, there's some other pieces that could be interesting. You know, Gage Wood and and the and company, but I'll be honest with you, Alex McFarlane, who I mean you need guys out of the bullpen, well there you go. Uh what what what's going on there? I mean, it's not uh you know, it's not as if there's not a shot that he could come into any one of those games and maybe give you a boost or something along those lines. But let's be honest here. In terms of the trade deadline, are we kidding? That's it. That's all I'm giving you. Then there's the the international kid that they have who's 17. Renteria, I believe his name is. I don't think, you know, there's gonna be any reason for the Phillies Francisco Renteria. There's gonna be any reason for the Phillies to really go, hey, let's trade the Venezuelan kid who's hitting 378 right now. I mean, maybe, but that's your future. 17 years old. That's your future. 6'3-216. I wouldn't imagine that's someone they're gonna move on from. But back to the Harper comments, though, and is he right? Absolutely. He's absolutely right that they do need help. But why would you say that, especially being that at that point in time you're three and eight out of the all-star break, and you're continuing to lose ground. What makes you think that's a good idea to say that? And by the way, it's really interesting coming from Harper, because as I mentioned before, the clubhouse is a sanctuary. Well, Harper had that same sentiment when he talked about the Dave Dombrowski not elite comments because he said on Bussing with the Boys, you know, I was under the impression that my entire time here with the Phillies that we don't do those things. We don't throw players under the bus. We keep things in-house. That's what and by the way, this has changed since Don Mattingley's taken over. Rob said from the day that he became the interim manager, I am not going to be one of those guys that needs to send the message through the media. And I never felt like he ever did that. Well, Don Mattingly has taken no bones about telling everyone when the Phillies are stinking up the joint. And I love when people are saying, oh, well, he's a he's a players manager. No, he's not. He gets on those guys. He he does. I think, though, uh, for one thing, I think there are some players that just don't know how to handle it because majority of the players today are coddled. And it's not just the Phillies that's all around baseball, but now that you see it with the Phillies, they are coddled players. They believe that everything should be done right by them. Remember when he took Zach Wheeler out of the game against the Pirates a couple weeks ago and Wheeler was pissed? Now, granted, he had every right to be pissed. It's Zach Wheeler, and he felt embarrassed, but you know, he was ticked. He was hot. He was still hot after the game. You know, hours later, he's still upset. But here was Don Mattingley on Harper's comments.

Since Bryce thinking about it, I don't really sense anybody else thinking about it, honestly. And you've been been through this. Guys want to be GMs, what you need without a real understanding of where the organization is, exactly what where this thing goes, not only this year, but moving forward. So again, players like being GMs and making calls and spending other people's money. So, I mean, they've been doing this a while. Um he's never really backed away from trying to get guys. We're trying to get better. You know, we're gonna try to get better at the deadline. So leave it at that. I don't like it from the fact of what I've always what I've been saying that you're saying that we don't like our players that are here. And I just don't I think you're always trying to get better. You should always incrementally try to get better no matter who you are. If you're if you're the Dodgers who've won two straight, they're trying to get better in different ways. Um we're in the same boat, right? You're always trying to get better. But when you say something about

Heard this. This is not the first time I've heard this. You know, we need, we need. I was looking at it like internally. I gotta get better. We gotta get better. And that's simple as that.

Is Harper right? Yes. Should he have said it? No. And I love how Don Mattingley said, when asked, have you talked to him? No, well, Harper, you know, Harper's gonna be Harper. That's a statement. Harper's gonna be Harper? Doesn't really sound sounds like a little you know, iffy there in the Phillies Clubhouse between those two. And you mean to tell me, because here's what's really gonna turn a lot of people off of this Phillies team, Bryce Harper, and all that. If they get another manager fired, because with Joe Girardi, it was obvious they didn't like him. With Rob Thompson earlier in the year, it was obvious they didn't love the decision making. Now I don't think that's why they were playing badly, solely. I don't think they were trying to get him fired, but they got him fired. If they get another manager fired, come on. Or to the point where it's like, yeah, we can't even think about bringing him back, come on. Now Mattingley has made some porous bullpen decisions. It's not totally his fault. I don't think hell, I don't think Charlie Manuel could turn water into wine with these guys. He could make egg salad out of egg you know what with the guys that he has to bring out of the bullpen. It's pretty putrid. Now, honestly, when it comes to the trade deadline. If you are John Middleton and you're looking at things, there are two ways you can look at it. One, you can go, oh my god, anyone. I'll sign off on any contract, bring anyone in, Dave. This is bad. We gotta get them help. We gotta get them bullpen help. We gotta get them another starting pitcher. Anyone is on the table in the minor league system, you could do that. You can you can absolutely do that. You probably should have done that though three and four years ago. You know, instead of trading away a guy who's now the starting second baseman for the Detroit Tigers for Michael Lorenzen, or trading away Matt Veerling and Nick Mayton for Gregory Soto, you can look at it in the way that I just described. You gotta go all in. Yes, Byron Buxton, absolutely. Or you can sit there and you can go, No, we're not doing this. We're not doing we're not doing this at all. We're gonna stay put, or we're gonna sell, and we'll get them some arms, and when the season ends, when the lockout starts, the second the final out is made of the World Series, and bye-bye baseball, you can sit there and go, you know what? Here's a message to the players. If you want to be here, fine. You know, we'll be glad to have you. But I'm gonna let you know right now, we're no longer quote unquote spending stupid money. We're gonna ship out the players who we need to ship out and are a total waste of time. I get Aaronola can play out the remainder of his contract here, and that's it for this era of Philly's baseball. Because I'll tell you what, I thought I was done earlier in the year, but knowing that there was always that option to go with Rob Thompson and that they could maybe turn it around, although I thought it was unlikely, and then they actually did, I thought I was done then. This I can't I I can't even begin to tell you how out on them I am. I am done with this team. Done with this team. I've had it. I've honestly had it. And you know what? A lot of people were upset at me because a week ago I said, you know, I'm not usually one of those people that says this, but you gotta look forward to having the Eagles right around the corner. To have something else to think about was my point. And people are getting, I mean, well, why would you say that? Uh you're not a real fan. You want to have something else to concern yourself with. You know, maybe I love hearing about the fact that Jalen Hurts is going over the middle and seeing videos of Devontae Smith running routes. Something else to think about. Not because I'm done watching the Phillies. No. I will still actually watch that team. As much as I set them out on them. Yeah, because now it turns into a it's a chore to watch them every night. I sat through a 24-win season with the Sixers two years ago. You don't think I can sit through whatever the hell the Phillies are going to put me through for the next couple months? Having to sit through the 2018 team and 19 team and 20 team and 21, which, by the way, need I say the names, but this bullpen, if you need if they need some friends, they can call up the Ian Hamilton and the Hector Narisses of the world. Now for talking about where they are right now in the slump, Don Mattingley and Trey Turner.

I love how Trey Turner said we don't think it's a pressure thing or that we're running out of games. Running out of games you weren't running out of games. Now you're running out of games, you weren't before. I you sat there with being two and a half games back of the Braves. You had a comfortable spot for the wild card. You let other teams who were running out of games back into it. Now you are running out of games. Now you're running out of games to put enough length between you and other teams. Running out of games are we kidding ourselves? Come on, man. And Don Mattingly saying that the difference between where they are now compared to where they were earlier in the year when he took over. You know, earlier the one thing you can, and you can't hang your hat on it, but you can say this, which was the same thing you could say about the twenty-two team, and the same thing you could say about the twenty-three team when for now, mind you, that was the first two months of the year, not at the end of July, but when they were you know whating around, they the bullpen was letting them down. The way the bullpen was being used was letting them down. But they were very much in those games. It's just it was like this, and like Trey Turner just described, when they hit, they didn't pitch, and when they pitched, they didn't hit. And that's kind of where they're at right now. But the fact that you had two games in this three-game series that were right there, that you had two wins that you could put in your back pocket, that you could sit there right now and say to yourself, at 57 and 52, that you could have been 59 and 50, you could have been, granted, still about two games behind the Cubs and two games behind the D-backs and about four behind the Braves, which isn't the end of the world, but you're still it's there for the taking, and you still are in a comfortable spot to make the postseason at this point. Now, you're in an uncomfortable spot. And might I say, as we turn the page now to the series coming up against Baltimore, the Baltimore Orioles today, while the Phillies were blowing a 6-0 lead to the Tigers, the Orioles came back down 7-0 to the Tigers. So in two days, you're going to be seeing two teams that are going in vastly different directions. The Orioles, while are 53 and 56, and two and a half games back of a wild card spot. The second half of their season, since the All-Star Break, they swept the Astros, they lost two of three to Boston, two of three to the Braves, they lost, and then took two of three against the Tigers. Currently, the Baltimore Orioles sit after the All-Star Break, their record is they're seven and five. And they were actually on a four-game win streak heading in to the All-Star Break. They're playing better baseball. The Phillies, on the other hand, make you want to peel your eyes out watching them play. And watching a baseball team that is just wiltering away, and a fan base right now that is also wiltering away and is starting to get restless again with this organization, its owner, its president, its manager, its star player, and star players and young guys, slash roll guys. Now here was what we have for the starting pitching preview against the O's. Starting Friday. For the O's, Brandon Young takes them out. Breakout player was not expected to have this stat line. 8-2 with a 3-1-3 ERA, and he's never faced the Phillies. Good for you, Brandon Young. As you obviously go through your rena your young career. I don't want to say Renaissance, but your young career, you might see that ERA lower a lot more. 2-1 with a 2-8-5 ERA at home and nine starts. Well, probably going to be 3-1. Because for the Phillies, it's TBD. Probably you're going to see the Tim Mesa and Brian Keller tandem like you saw last Saturday against the Yankees. And yeah, that worked at home against the Yankees. Against the O's. You know, their offense hasn't been lighting the crap out of the baseball. But I'll be hon I'll be brutally honest here. As much of a mixed bag as they are, like the Phillies, they're not predictable. Because the Phillies' offense I think part of it's predictable because they've kept the same team together for so long without making any changes. Now, game two, you're going to see Shane Baz take the mound. He's four and nine with a three-nine eight ERA. He has started two games against the Phillies in his career when he was in Tampa Bay. He's gone eight and a third innings, allowing eight runs on eleven hits, seven strikeouts with three walks, and is three and three with a three-nine five ERA and ten starts at home. He was the Orioles probably most consistent starting pitcher at one point. But his season has gotten a little shaky recently. In Miami, the Phillies could, but you know, then you trust the bullpen after a bullpen game the day before. Which, by the way, if you're telling me guys are down and the bullpen's taxed, well, gee, maybe that's the reason. Just huh. I don't know. Maybe because you don't have a fourth or fifth consistent starter. And then Christopher Sanchez will take them out for the Phils. He's 13 and 4th at 273. Alright. Now he didn't face the O's last year, and the reason why I say last year is because the Orioles have revamped that offense, and there are some faces there that weren't there in 23 or 24. You know, Cedric Mullins isn't there, and you know, Ryan Mountcastle's hurt. Adley Rutschman's hurt, um, although he and Sammy Basayo could be back. But Gunnar Henderson is about, and Jackson Holiday are about the two faces that Sanchez would have seen before, and I think Colton Kowser, but they may or may not start him against a lefty. Now Sanchez 4-3 with a 4-9-7 ERA and nine starts on the road. We talked about his home and road splits. Again, it's a little bit of a mixed bag there. Game three, Kyle Braddish, 7-9 with a 3-7-4 ERA. In two starts against the Phillies, he's pitched 11 2 thirds innings, allowing two runs on 10 hits with seven strikeouts and three walks. He's 3-4 this year with a 3-2-0 ERA and 10 starts at home. Then it's Zach Wheeler, who's 10-2 with a 2-5-3 ERA. He didn't face the Orioles last year, and he's 6-1 with a 2-3-9 ERA and 10 starts on the road this year. That's including today. That's including today. I mean, you think about how big of a rock he's been when you have hit the road. And that just goes to sh or not today, the other day. Uh not specifically today, on on Monday. You know, it's just, it's like, wow. He got shelled in that loss, and he still has a 2-3-9 ERA on the road. Yeah. Now do the scales tip in the Phillies' favor for the starting pitching? When you got Wheeler and Sanchi on the mound, it always is that is the case. Does that mean they're going to take two out of three and sweep? I'd be hard pressed to say they won't. And I'll tell you this right now. That could have been this series against Miami could have been the final nail in the coffin for this team, and maybe this era of Phillies baseball. And it sucks. It sucks just like you know, it would stink for the Eagles and the Jalen Hurts era if they didn't have a tro uh a Super Bowl trophy. It stunk for the Donovan McNabb, Brian Dawkins era of not having a trophy. Alan Iverson and, you know, the Mike Richards and Jeff Carter Flyers teams, and you know, the great Flyers teams of the 90s, and all those eras of the Reggie White Eagles. Like it sucks that these things do not end with a Cinderella finish. But I think we're really starting to come to grips with the fact that 08 is going to be all that we have for quite some time. I'm sorry, folks, but and and the five-year stretch of making the postseason from 07 to 2011, this era of Phillies baseball probably will not tie it. I'm sorry, ladies and I wish I had better news. I thought I could leave you with more, but I'm finding it really hard to be positive about this thing. Now we'll be back on not throughout the series against the O's. I'll be away for the weekend.
