What's going on, ladies and gentlemen? Welcome into a frustrating episode this evening on the Charmed City Sports Podcast. As we're recording this Sunday evening, you'll probably be hearing it, of course, Monday morning. But the Baltimore Orioles lose two out of three north of the border in Toronto at the Rogers Center. Two out of three games that when you look at it now, your four games under 500. You've got the Seattle Mariners coming into town. A good Seattle Mariners team. One of the few that actually play above 500 baseball in the American League, although they're they're two games above 500, but they're seven and three in their last ten. So they're hot. They're they're as the summers getting going here, they're they're playing some good baseball. And the Orioles have been as well. But this was a frustrating three games. I mean, and now collectively it wasn't, but the Orioles should have won today's game, and we're gonna put a pin in that for just a moment. And I I r we're gonna kind of go right through these first two games in this recap, and then we're gonna get to the nuts and bolts in game three, because that was just in my opinion, that was taken completely out of the Orioles' hands in that situation. And I think you know what I mean. If you don't, I'm obviously referring to Ernie Clement basically in my book, and I think in a lot of people's books, manipulating the rule book. Because that is what he essentially did. And we'll get back to that in a moment. The Orioles in this series started off in a way that I believe if you are going to best a team like the Toronto Blue Jays, if you are going to best a team at their house, you have to be able to establish that first game again and against a Toronto Blue Jays team that, mind you, is trying to get their season back under track. I mean, this is a Blue Jays team that came within inches of winning the World Series, and heading into the series, they had to be sitting there going, We're thirty and thirty-three. It's June 5th, we're thirty and thirty-three. We're better than this. We came literally inches away from winning the World Series last year. So, in my opinion, the Orioles and the Blue Jays, even though the O's obviously, I think a lot of people have written off at at as at this point going into Friday's game, although they were turning a corner there, as we've spoken about, and they st I think they still relatively are. But it was so important when you looked at the Brandon Young, Treya Savage matchup, and you said to yourself, This is going to be a tough nut to crack tonight because Treya Savage pitched well the previous Saturday against the O's. But the O's a little bit of a similar feel of a game. But this time, the Orioles are the ones who are able to pour it on in the middle of the ballgame and not look back. Started off with an Adley Rutschman Homer, then Vlad Guerrero, sack flies to get George Springer home, bottom fifth, Valenzuela, hammers one out, make it three-one. Alright, it's within reason, it's a two-run game. Let's chase Yesev from the game. And the Oriol did just that. They put up five runs in the sixth, with a Kobe Mayo two-run blast to give you some breathing room at six to three. Chased Yseveg. Basically made the Blue Jays go, oh my gosh, in one fail swoop, we went from up two to now down three. This is unbelievable. And it just seemed like they could not course correct properly. Now they had some traffic on, but they couldn't course correct, and the Orioles get to a 13-3 win. And a 13-3 win, mind you, that the Orioles only homer twice in the game. The solo shot by Rutch, the two run blast by Mayo, who, by the way, I'll tell you what, if Kobe Mayo gets to a ball, if he puts a good swing on one, you can forget about it. That guy has some serious pop out of that bat if he can just be consistent. I mean, he has got some serious pop. And another guy who's got some serious stuff as a young'un is Brandon Young. Goes six and a third, gave up the three runs on seven hits, but no walks and four strikeouts. He did a masterful job Friday evening. And here was his battery mate Adley Rutschman after the game.

I think for him, just trusting uh his stuff in zone. Uh he's got two really good fastballs, he's able to uh kind of play those off of each other, and then he's got two breaking balls and a really good splitter. So uh just for him trusting trusting those pitches and uh being in the zone early, forcing contact, and uh putting away guys uh in as little pitches as possible. So he does a really good job, and uh, you can tell just the confidence in him just continues to grow.

Again, masterful stuff by Rutch and Brandon Young uh working in tandem and obviously uh Adley Rutschman came within a triple of the cycle. So shout out to him, four for four with five ribies, an awesome night by Adley Rutschman, who I have to say, I was looking at the you know the the all-star ballot graphics on the MOB official Instagram page, and I gotta say, I'm looking through the comments, and not many people are picking Adley Rutschman to be in the All-Star game, but I got it endless, and there are some great catchers in the American League. You've got some guys having some big seasons, no doubt about it. But in my opinion, in my opinion, Adley Rutschman deserves to be in that conversation. He might not get in, but he deserves to be in that conversation because he has been, I think, the ultimate in terms of consistency, he's been the most consistent Orioles player this season. And I know hopefully Pete Alonso's coming on, and maybe because of the recency into the season, people say, ah, he deserves to be, you know, representing the Orioles in the All-Star game at first base, and maybe so. And I mean, obviously, there's the home run derby that no doubt uh he may very well be compelled to compete in. Uh, I assume he'll be able to uh make that decision, you know, himself in terms of obviously wanting to compete in it. I know he hasn't in quite a couple in quite a few years. That was always, you know, like the Super Bowl for the New York Mets fans. So we'll see what happens with that regard. But regardless, back to what we're concerned about in Toronto. So a win in game one, and then game two, the Blue Jays do something that I was not anticipating, and that's using an opener, which was an intriguing idea because all things considered, you know, it kind of worked. Spencer Miles didn't have to face the first one, two, three batters for the O's. Now, let's just consider this. When you find out, if you're the manager and you find out who the starting pitcher is that night and you know who it is, why wouldn't you just say, hey, you know what? Let's and, you know, hey, maybe you have to force that guy to pitch the second inning. But could you say, you know what, Ward, Henderson, Rutschman or one, two, three guys, we're gonna go. And I know this sounds crazy, but hear me out. We're gonna go Kowser, Alexander, Holiday, one, two, three, or at least some variation of that to lead off the game. Why? Because you're forcing that team to then have their because the whole vantage point is, because the saying is, obviously, as you've heard time and time again, third time through the orders when they get worse. Well, you wouldn't face those top three guys. If you're gonna use an opener, if you're Spencer Miles, you don't have to face Rutschman, you don't have to face Ward and Henderson up until, you know, as if everything goes to play, and you don't have to face them until maybe the sixth inning, where maybe, you know, perhaps if some damage being done against you, you have to face them earlier in that game, like say the fifth inning, you can push it back an inning. Now you have to burn a reliever, sure, that's not what you want ideally, but you know, to a certain degree, if you have a guy out there who struggles like Spencer Miles did, especially last week, and you're maybe a little concerned about whether or not he's gonna get hit hard again, you say, you know what? We're gonna extend you, we're we're gonna give you three less outs to have to worry about to start this game. And he goes four and a third, and after Colton Cowser put the O's up one nothing, the bottom of the second, the Blue Jays come right back, and Kyle Bradish did not have his best stuff. And he and here's another thing. Regardless, you have faith, faith in Bradish to keep it within reason. If he doesn't have his stuff, you have the very minimum, say, you know what, he's gonna be able to still get us outs. And it's gonna be a 2-1 game, it's gonna be a 3-1 game when he gets lifted, and we have enough faith with how our offense is going and with the way some of the guys in the front of the bullpen have been pitching, they can go out there and they can get the job done. And Bradish gives up five runs on nine hits, goes only four innings, three walks, three K's, just not a good day at a KB. And he did not have his off speed stuff, and here was uh Craig Albernaz explaining that further, and as well as Kyle Bradish uh obviously frustrated in the clubhouse after the game.

He wasn't as shopping as crisp as he as he has been, um falling behind some bad counts and you know the slider, some of the sliders were just up all over. That's what they did a damage to look like he had the field for you. Um that's something where we talked about it's a great weapon for him, but also he's not feeling it. He's still gonna start the weapon as well. So it's just kidding.

Um just um we have to make a ball for another guy. Um I think it's hard to say with the two out of the body. Not too mad about that, just from the hitter he isn't being in a one-one ball game, but um get the next guy. The slider and curve ball are both not as sharp as usual. How do you kind of battle yourself and work that out big game? I mean, you still gotta throw it. Um I think I did a good job canning both the two seam and four seam today. I think looking back at it, I probably throw two seam there to Ernie. He saw a lot of sliders and um fortunately hung it.

I viewed it as kind of ho-hummish and you move on to Sunday. But you have faith when you win that first game, you got your quote unquote ace on the mound, the next game we're gonna win this series. We're going against Spencer Miles, who we tattooed yesterday. And again, if they go with the opener and our offense maybe struggles, you know what? We'll still be able to come through later on in the game because it's gonna be, we assume, a closed game coming down the stretch, and we're gonna have a chance to win it. And the Orioles, to their credit, battle back. Pete Alonzo hit his 13th Homer of the Year, 6'3. Blaze Alexander, just his second Homer of the Year, 6'4, and the Orioles all of a sudden are two runs away from tying it, with eight outs to go. And then in the top of the eighth, Gunner leads off with a single, and unfortunately, Adley and Pete ground out. Um now it Adley grounds out, but they do not get the lead runner, obviously, um, in this situation, because Gunner ends up on third, where Pete Pete Alonzo 10.5 miles per hour. And listen, this is where you come back and say, You tip your cap and you move on. You know, going up against Rogers, former teammate of his, he hits one back up the middle, and just a fantastic diving play to his right. Um obviously he uh was a killer for the Orioles this series. Ernie Clement, we're gonna get to that situation coming up here. Uh throws out Pete, and then with a runner at third, two outs, Kobe Mayo chases um a slider that you know isn't even registered here on MLB.com. I mean, in that box, not even there. So not even showing on the image. That's how bad that was. And then top nine Owes 123 by Varland, who picks up his tenth save of the year and his ERA is now at a whopping 0.27. So now to today. And white might might go down as the most frustrating loss in a while. And not because, like, oh my gosh, I just can't believe this, you know, this happened and that happened and they couldn't hit and they left so many guys in scoring position, da da da. This game, in my opinion, was taken out of the hands of the Baltimore Orioles. They had a terrific start going by Shane Bass. Just a terrific start. And it's kept at zeros to the top of the fifth, Colton Cowser, Solo Homer, his sixth of the season, Blaze Alexander, RBI double 2-0, Taylor Ward 4-0, and everything's right in the world. Bottom of the fifth, some traffic on with one out. Shane's able to get through it. Top six. Unfortunately, Adley Rutschman, you know, doesn't move at all after a leadoff single. Again, Pete Alonzo, 107 off the bat, but Akamoto able to get his glove on it, robs Pete of a hit. Bottom six we go. And Baz, you know, hey, Penango hits his fourth homer of the year, 423 feet. Changeup, catches too much of the plate. Alright. Sucks that let off the inning, but let's see him bear down here against Vlad. I mean, you got Vlad coming up, you got Sanchez behind him, and you got Clement. He gets Vlad to ground out. You say, hmm, alright. Well, still gotta bear down, but hey, you got the guy that you're most obviously worried about heading into that inning. Unfortunately, Jesus Sanchez would double in the right. So tying run is on deck. Big out here in Ernie Clement. And you could not have had a better situation, in my opinion. Here's what I just i it's inexcusable. You have Ernie Clement out, and Gunnar Henderson messes up that play. Okay. Runners at the corners, one out, huge moment in the game. Valenzuela the hitter, and Brandon Valenzuela grounds out, or should have, well did ground out, but should have hit into a double play. And Gunner Anderson fields the ball with Ernie Clement coming down the line, and Gunner reaches his glove out to make the tag. Clement veers has to be beyond three feet of the bag. You're allowed three feet off the bag. At least that's what the rule says. When the fielder approaches you with his glove to make the tag, when they talk about a runner establishing a baseline, that's what they're talking about. But you have to be within reason of the base path. And Gunner or Clement goes, in my opinion, way beyond three feet. Gunner, who thinks, hey, he's out anyways, because he's out of the base paths, flips to first, and he's thinking, hey, uh, we're out of this. Double play. Now again, should Gunner have made the play in the out before? No question. But in that situation, you got absolutely screwed. Because you're out of the inning. You very damn well should be out of the inning. And a run scores, and they call Clement safe at second. And here's the other whole hitch in this. You can see Shane Baz pointing at the second base umpire. What what are you doing? Pete Alonzo coming over at him, like, what is going on here? And you got Gunnar woofing at him, and then Craig Albernaz comes out. So it's just a total cluster, you know what? And for the Orioles, it's like just a total mental reset. And listen, the umpires there have to do the right thing. They gotta get together and say, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, wait a minute. Because the first base umpire should have been able to see that. If you look at the shot down the first base from the first base side of view of the second base, he's already veering off as Gunner. Now, granted, are you giving Gunner an opportunity to make that throw? Sure. Maybe you are. You know, you're not blocking Gunner's chance to throw to first. But you veer over that much, that's as far as you should go. Because then you're essentially establishing the base path right then and there. And Valenzuela couldn't even believe that there was a Blue Jays fans couldn't, they were even saying, man, the Orioles were right on that one. We got lucky. And they got oh so lucky on that. I mean, y he ends up a foot and a half apart from Gunnar Henderson. Shout out to this person on Reddit for kind of slowing down the imaging on it. I I I just I am at a total loss of words for that situation. That was embarrassing. I mean absolutely embarrassing by the umpiring crew today. And here was Hunter Wendelstad's opinion. It was actually a very gentlemanly thing to do. Referring to Ernie Clement, getting out of the way to allow the fielder to make the play to first base. It just so happened they tried to spin it to get two, but his base path was already established. So here's what I don't understand. Ernie Clement's kind of manipulating the rule here in this situation. Because you're right, his base path was essentially already established when he's moving out of the way. So why does he get to establish his base path again when Gunner goes to place the Tag. Because the distinction is, as Nick Lentz said via the poll report, Ernie Clement established Lane out there during fielding, not during tag attempt, which allows him to move out of the way. Well, allows him to move even further out of the way. And he manipulates the rule by doing this. Because he knows damn well what he was trying to do. He's manipulating the rule. He's saying, hey, he has to establish the base path, or I get to establish the base path once he ta attempts to tag me. I I mean, what are we doing here, guys? This is where the the the umpires get together, they say, hey, listen. I get what the rule technically says, but that is so wrong for us to award him second base. He's out, the runners the the the hitters out going to first, double play, innings over, it's a 4-1 game, and who knows what happens because the orals just completely unraveled. Because they were now they were still down 4-2, then Akamoto singles, Jimenez doubles 4-4, and then they bring in Yunir Kano to take out Shane, and he gives up an RBI single to Luke's, and that was that. I mean that it's just absolutely r ridiculous on on the part of the umpiring crew to do what they've been doing, or or to have done what they did in that situation. That was embarrassing, in my opinion. Absolutely embarrassing. They took that game from the Orioles today. They really did. Now do you have to be a professional in that situation and say, hey, we still have another out to go in this inning? Sure. But I to reset like that after believing you're out of the inning, I don't care who you are. Stick a s stick any person out there, they'd be irked to the one millionth degree. So it's like similar to when a ground ball to first base, run on first base, and the guy's running the second base, and they veer off the kind of defective throw. So you have Leeway there. And then also Umpire said Gunner's tag attempt wasn't a good enough attempt. I think you when you stick your glove out to tag somebody, that's an attempt to tag. There's no rule about how far you have to extend your own to tag somebody. Yeah, that wasn't frustration buildup. I think it's one of my sideways where, yeah, those those plays you referenced like had something to do with that, like that's what trying to buy us, like, they do a great job making contact, moving the ball forward, and what do you get weak contact? You always talk about like you gotta make the play, make the outs, and you can't give the team extra outs. That's kind of what happened. Like, I was made great pitches against those guys, and you know, even Yenny's with Ball with Jackson, you know. Me and Jackson talked about it like the flip there was that's gonna be safe. Usually we took the ball, it's gonna float a little bit, so I should have ate that. But yeah, so like when stuff like that happens, it's it's it spirals quickly. Yeah, definitely frustrating, especially when you put up four runs against a really good pitcher in Kevin Gulsman, especially early. He was he was spotting well. Um, but Lil' Caden split, Lil Caden's fastball down to keep the split on and to put up four that inning, you know, with some big swings by Kowler and then Worthy, you know, and plays, you know, it's great at first two great attacks to kind of get us going and not have all that happen. Yeah, that's that's the frustrating part. Because when you put up four against Gaussian, you're gonna be able to close the deal. Obvious question, just how frustrating was the playoff.

Look at this but yeah, uh very super frustrating because uh gotta get a chain out of the inning with uh one run. And then um yeah, obviously, um zero clue. What are you thinking there? Um I mean steady established his lane outside of the established lane, but I don't think you can do that when you're halfway down the baseline. And when I make an attempt at tagging you run another feet out of the way. It's frustrating. Very game. On the game is close. Very, very frustrating.

Like he's only allowed at so many feet to be considered in the baseline if you make a loop and slide where you can't even reach second base in the next two steps. I don't really understand that. So um, yeah, that was a new one for me. Um but yeah, that was uh definitely uh not a felt like not a great call.

You took a couple of steps there between shielding the ball and reaching out for him. Was that kind of as you're moving across second base, kind of what's going through your head?

Yeah, I figured he was gonna make a move to like avoid the tag, and then when I saw him get way out of the line, I was like, okay, well, he's gonna be out of the baseline, and that'll be an out, and then I'll throw out the first and get this guy out. So when I did, and then I turned around and he said safe, I was uh pretty shocked to say the least.

I mean, I get the old adage, you've been around the game a long time, you're gonna see a lot of things. That's a new one for me. Because that's coming from the umpiring crew. And here's where this all gets hazy, folks. Because imagine you get out of the inning, you win that game. Alright, you probably wish you could have swept with the KB start the day before, but hey. You win the series, take two out of three at a four and two road trip. You are 32 and 34 coming home now to play the Seattle Mariners. And this Seattle Mariners series the pitching the starting pitching, uh I guess, ticker, I'll use it, favors the Mariners. I mean, it is it's gonna be a grind for the O's. So starting tonight's game for the Orioles to open the three-game series against the Seattle Mariners will be Trey Gibson getting the recall from Norfolk. Uh, obviously, it was scheduled to be Chris Bassett tonight. I originally had this episode actually recorded. I'm now going back and re-recording this portion uh here in the middle afternoon stages on Monday, so uh obviously good thing I guess I held off on publishing this episode, but obviously Trey Gibson will come up, make the start for Chris Bassett, who's dealing with those back issues. We talked about that after the Boston series on Friday afternoon. Now, when Chris Bassett when it was reported he was dealing with those back issues, that came Wednesday night. They just put him on the 15 day today, on the 15 day I. Why on the day of that he is expected to make that start, you know, he had the back examined I'm seeing here on June 5th, joined the team in Toronto, threw on June 6th, so they clearly were kind of w why didn't they just kind of nip it in the butt then and say, you know what? This is the best course of action for us at this moment in time. Now he's on the 15 day, now you have two youngins in your starting rotation with Gibson, and you also throw in Brandon Young, although Brandon Young has looked pretty darn good here. Dean Kramer, the hope is he'll be the hope I'm seeing here is late June, early July, so reinforcements may come then. Cade Povich is expected return is TBD. We just continue to talk about the injury situation with the Orioles, and I mean listen, I can understand from the standpoint of him needing to get his back examined on June 5th. But I would think if there were any questions in the examination that would lead you to say, hey, we're gonna need him to throw a session the following day and then we'll go from there. I that just doesn't I don't know. I think at this stage in the game let's get let's nip it in the butt here on June 5th after we're done with the imaging here on Friday. Let's let's now get him on the fifteen instead of putting him on June 8th. And Trey Gibson now he's his last start out against the race, he pitched five and two thirds, allowed a run on six hits, and then in Norfolk, his last outing was on June the third, so exactly five days ago, pitching against the Gwinnett Stripers of the Atlanta Braves affiliate, triple-A affiliate, obviously. Gibson looked good. I mean, solid, pitched into the seventh, so six and a third innings, gave up two runs on four hits, six strikeouts and a walk. So solid stuff for Trey Gibson. Um obviously he had uh you know some big league guys around him, Dietrich Enz, uh pitching for the win that night, Nick Raquette as well down there, and then you know, you look at the top three in that batting order on June the 30th, Tommy Fam, Heshton Kirstead, Christian Incarnacion Strand. So obviously some big league guys down there as well. Louis Vasquez down there, you know, who was up with the Orioles not too long ago. Um, so hopefully, again, he's uh he's getting uh some big league guys put around him, and hopefully, and some of those guys, I mean, who knows if we actually see Tommy Fam up with the Orioles? Who knows if we who knows if we see Incarnacio on Strand, who's actually hitting pretty decently well down in triple A. He might get a get a look here at some point if someone goes down. Um, I mean, with with the way this Orioles team is, uh it could very well be a possibility. But no doubt it's good to see Trey Gibson go out there and pitch well in his rehab start, but tonight it's gonna need to be uh a pretty darn good start for him going up against the Seattle Mariners and you know facing a younger guy, obviously in Emerson Hancock, but hopefully it's going to be a night where Gibson can give them an opportunity here, making the spot start for Chris Bassett. But depth in your farm system is always what you want to have. You always want to have confidence that if you need to call up a guy to make a start, they'll be able to go out there and uh pitch like they've done it multiple times before. And Gibson obviously has had experience earlier this season pitching in the Biggs. Looked good. His first time at Yankee Stadium looked good in his last start against Tampa Bay. Let's see what he does tonight against Seattle. And then Emerson Hancock goes for Seattle. He's 4-2 with the 2-8-0 ERA, gave up a run on two hits and five and two thirds innings with six strikeouts against the Orioles in his lone start last season. Game two, you'll see Trevor Rogers on the mound, three and six with a six-two-nine ERA. Now he's 203 ERA versus the Mariners since 2022. Uh no decisions in those two starts. Won 13 and a third innings, gave up three runs on eight hits with 11 Ks. Just eight hits through 13 and a third. That's pretty good. But obviously, we know it's been a grind for Trevor this year. And then Logan Gilbert takes them out for Seattle. He's 4-4 with a 3-7-9 ERA. One and one with the 3-3-8 ERA versus the O's. In six starts, he has pitched into the sixth every or no, I'm sorry, not six starts. Uh rather three starts against the Orioles. He's pitched into the sixth every single time he's faced them. Game three, we'll see Brandon Young take the mound. He's four and one with three four seven ERA. He's never faced the Mariners, but some stats from him this year at home. One and one with a three-four-nine ERA. Now George Kirby will pitch. He's five and five with a four-o-four this year. He's one-and-four with a two-five-O ERA versus the Orioles in six starts. One and four with the two five O ERA in six starts. One in four with that low of an ERA. He's pitched five complete innings in each start. He's only gone five total once. He's usually able to pitch into the sixth, complete the sixth, maybe pitch into the seventh. Now he pitched a complete game versus the O's in 2023. So there's obviously some concern there as to having Kirby on the mound against a young Brandon Young, although Young has been very good. But I think there's more concern Hancock versus Bassett, Gilbert versus Rogers. This could be a series where the Orioles they're gonna need to really bear down and try and win this series at home and get back on the right track, because as I stated, you should be 32 and 34 heading into the series. You should absolutely be at a point to where you could say, hey, they need to get back to 500, but if they just at minimum take two of three, and you can get to now a game under 500, or at worst, you lose two of three in this series against Seattle, and you're 33 and 36. As opposed to you lose two of three now and it's 32 and 37, and you're five games under you're five games back, and it's like here we go again. Now, does that kill you in the wild card? No, not necessarily, but I You want to get back to front. Now, what does kill you in the wild card is the fact that the Blue Jays are now a game ahead of you for the wild card. That's what kills you. And if that's if that game comes back to the bite to bite them because of that, there will be if it's that close of a race, obviously. I mean, if you finish a game back in a tiebreaker, or say you finish in a tie and the tiebreaker breaks the tie-I mean, livid. Lit for great reason. And and Rubenstein should throw a fit with the legal office for that one. Rubenstein, Elias, Albernez, all of them. There should be a conference call tomorrow. Hell, there should have been a conference call tonight. To sit there and say you can't do anything about it now. Now I'm not gonna sit here and and sound like some Yahoo who's gonna say, well, they need to replay it from whatever inning. No. They're not gonna do that. This isn't the George Brett situation. But what they should do is they damn well should sit there and say, you know, okay, this is how we're gonna handle it. Because you gotta hold you know what? Check some balances, folks, for these for these official for these umpires. Checks and balances. You've been doing it long enough. You're in the big leagues, you're in the show. You know, Jackson Holiday made a dumb mistake today, uh, you know, flipping a ball with his glove in the air and allowed a run to score. Um, I think clearly there can, you know, and Albernaz said, hey, I talked to him. You don't think Albernaz was saying, dude, what the hell? Same should be said for the umpiring. Same should be said.
