Another series has gone by, folks, as we continue throughout the summer of baseball and we flip the calendar from June to July here in this 2026 Baltimore Orioles season. And surprise, surprise, it featured the Orioles losing two out of three. This time at the hand of the Chicago White Sox, a surprise team in the AL Central this season. The White Sox certainly have you know gone from the bottom dwellers of baseball, the butt of the joke, to now the top in their division, as they sit one game to the good in the loss column to the Guardians. One game worse than the win column to the Guardians, so currently they're deadlocked, and the White Sox hold the tiebreaker. So that's obviously a surprise, and sure. You lose series at times. I mean, this is a hundred and sixty-two baseball season. You're gonna lose series. But when you're at this point in the season, yeah, you can lose series. I mean, it happens. You're gonna again, it's a long year. Throughout the summer, you're gonna lose series. You might lose series to bad teams. The New York Yankees two years ago, in the pennant winning year in 2024, they lost two of three to the White Sox. Believe it or not, White Sox is a historically bad team. But while those happen, you've now lost five out of your last six series if you're a Baltimore Oriol. At a certain point in time, it becomes increasingly obvious that this, as they were so lovingly called, the baby birds, they are not processing what it takes to be a big league player at the rate that you would have expected them to at this point in their careers. Because back on June 12th, well June 11th, actually, they just took two of three from the Seattle Mariners at home. The San Diego Padres were coming up Friday, June 12th. The Orioles won that game seven to three. They're 34 and 37. They lose the next day, 9-3. Then they lose the following day, 5-2. Then that continued this embarrassing stretch in which they've now lost five out of their last six. And when you look, you know, the one shining rose in this field of dreary is the two out of three to the Dodgers that you won. You won that series. Amazingly. Could have s could hell could have swept them if they could have closed the game out Friday night with Ryan Housley blowing that game, and we'll get to him in a moment. But this was an Orioles team that was 31-33 on June 5th. And as we sit here, Thursday evening, July 12th, they said 40 and 48. Four and a half games back out of a wild card spot. Not good. And that's putting it mildly. Now, in this series against the White Sox, the first two losses, or the two losses, because you won the Wednesday game, the day game. They were drastically different from each other from the starting pitching standpoint, because Shane Boz, in game one, gave you seven innings, gave up two runs on four hits, with six Ks and four walks. And everything seemed like as the game was tied at two, kind of looked like, okay, you know, if the Orioles can just bear down here and their bullpen can just be a little bit better than the White Sox bullpen, then maybe they can come away with the win here in game one and get off to a nice start. After just losing two of three to the Nationals. You know, your quote-unquote local rival. Well, Colson Montgomery hits an RBI double off of Grant Wolfram with a runner at first, a 2-2 slider that caught way too much of the plate, and the Orioles then trailed by one and would further. And when you look at the you know pitch to Montgomery, again, just caught way too much of the plate. I mean, give him credit, he puts a great swing on the ball, but I mean that was a hanging side or just you know screaming hit me. And then Randall Gritchuk with Montgomery on second hits an RBI single to make it four two. Yinir Kano comes in in the top of the ninth to try and keep it at bay and keep it a two-run game and give you a chance, and he gives up a couple base runners, RBI single by Gonzalez, two run single rather by Gonzalez, 6-2, and then Blaze Alexander, whom on the margins and in terms of doing the little things, hasn't been the most consistent. I mean, how many, you know, twice he got thrown out or he, you know, got thrown out at second, running into an out well, not running into an out, but trying to take second and Jackson Holliday is scoring, and he's out at second base before Holiday crossed the plate. Had that botch play in Boston, couple other fielding errors here of late, so he hasn't been sharp. And it's just it feels like it's just been spoil it's just been spoiling over, not from him specifically, but just it's just kind of a microcosm of what's been going on what's been going wrong. And again, it's not just him. I mean, Kobe Mayo had that total brain fart on Sunday, you know, where he throws that ball away to Samuel Basayo, where, you know, you're likely out of the inning. And it leads to a run being scored. So it's just, I mean, it just continues to get worse and worse. And here's the biggest thing it's become increasingly obvious they are not processing losses the way you should as a professional athlete. Because at a certain point, and I mean, they've played baseball for so long, but at a certain point, I think you gotta say to yourself, man, it's one game. It was one bad game we played as a team, it was one bad game we had as an as an individual, we move on to the next day. We move on to the next day, and we move on to the next day, and we keep it, you know, you don't want to get too tight. Not saying you want to be you don't want to take it seriously, but you can't always be so I gotta make it happen, I gotta make it happen, I gotta make it happen, because that's what it feels like is going on with this Orioles team. And is it a poorly constructed team? Yeah, because really a lot of it has to also do with their bullpen, which to be honest with you, was a question mark going into the season. And we knew that was going to be a question mark heading into the season, and what has it been? A big you know what question mark, and there have been injuries as well, which we can talk about until the Cows come home. I mean, we could sit here and do an entire episode and literally go like half an hour talking about all these different injuries that have happened to the Baltimore Warriors. Now, game two was just uh it was over by the third inning. It was tied at one after the Basal RBI hit. So you go to the second, clean frame there, and then Trey Gibson gives up seven runs in the third, and then another in the fourth, and you know, you're looking at a nine-one game. Orioles get a couple back, but there was, you know, obviously nothing that was going to help them on that night. Now, after the game, it was Craig Albernaz, who was asked, and Pete Alonso as well, but we'll start off with Craig about, you know, and this is actually both from game one and then game two, about the frustrating loss and what's wrong with the team, and just kind of where the team needs to go from here.

Extremely disappointing. Um Shane was outstanding. We needed him to step up and pitch deep in the game, and he did, and just kind of have it unravel, like you said. Yeah, it's extremely disappointing. We gotta we gotta clean up this the back half of the game defensively and a lot of errors. But the guys put the work in. It's not sure if they're being too cautious, too careful, trying not to make the mistake. You know, it's one of those things where like it's baseball, you have to play the game from the first pitch to the last pitch the same way. And our guys have been doing that, but as of late, they haven't. Us just not playing a complete game of baseball, that's keeping me up at night. You know, I think we have to handle our business first before worrying about wildcard standings or anything like that. Like we have to be able to play our game from start to finish and control what we can control and and put pressure on the other team and being able to convert outs. That's the biggest thing. I think the ladder, what you said, is three months left. When you play every day and you're not playing your best baseball, it seems like a daunting task. And that's why you have to take each day at a time and and attack each day. Go out there, compete, be prepared. Because when you look up, you don't know what's gonna happen. And the easiest thing to do is the throwing in towel and concede. You know, and that's something that our guys don't have. They're fighting, competing every single day, and we just need to uh to string together to some good innings of baseball. You know, we've shown that we can do it. And now it's actually going out there and doing it consistently.

And you know, there's so many other things that obviously go into it. We talk about the injuries, we talk about the way the bullpen was constructed, and things that, you know, he's coming into this. It's not like, yeah, it's not like he was with the organization for a couple seasons as like, you know, the assistant hitting coach or some type of a hitting strategist position, and then got a job with Cleveland as the bench coach and spent the last couple years as their bench coach, and then he makes a return. No, you know, we we know Craig obviously um has been around in his career being with the Tampa Bay Rays from 2015 to 2019, the Giants from 2020 to 23, and then the last two seasons with Guardians. So he has no, you know, real ties to the Baltimore Royals organization. And when he came in, it was kind of like, okay, now he can really, from what he saw in Cleveland, can kind of give a different approach to this thing. Well, you know, the fact of the matter is, there's only so much you can do. And he doesn't have big league managerial experience. It was one of the things I mentioned, like, hey, I would much rather have a guy come in here whom has sat in that seat before, understands what it means to be a manager, also understands what it kind of means to be a manager in today's game, where, you know, there's a lot that you say to yourself, is it the manager's decision, is it the GM's decision? But Mike Elias just told you over the weekend, hey, Craig has the lineup card. Craig's in charge of the decisions that are going to be made. Now, Elias also told you if he has a question, you know, they work on it in a collaborative effort, which kind of makes you go, Well, wait a minute. The guy's the manager. You mean to tell me he's coming to you guys for advice on this? Now he might sit there and work with his coaches and be like, hey, what do you think about giving Pete the day off at first? What do you guys think about giving you know Colton a bri a break here out in center field? Maybe we want to move him to one of the corner spots or well, you know, whatever have you. But anyway, but regardless, he he said, Oh, yeah, we work on a collaborative effort. Well, kind of makes you go, well, wait a minute here now. Are we sure that that's the way it is? You know, are we sure that's not just, yeah, it's a collaborative effort, he's got the lineup card, you know, if he has questions or whatever, then we work together. Well, okay, we could take that meaning, yeah, about you know, five out of every ten days, the lineup card is his, but you know, we're we're basically quote unquote working together on putting on putting this together. You know, kind of wink wink, yes, it's true sometimes. Here's a little white lie to make it true, but it's not at the same time, you know, that kind of thing. Now, Pete Alonzo was asked his side of things about what's the reason for the Oreo slide uh since being 15 and 16 going into the month of May.

Tonight's one of those ones where I feel like it's just like, hey, those those happen, but um where you just straight up get beat. And that that's what happened today. But there's a lot of other times that still I'm not saying that that's an excuse, but there's a lot of so many other games where it's like games that we could have and should have won. Um like those those fine margin games, like where where we gotta have. So I feel like those are the ones moving forward where um where we gotta kind of force the issue to do a better job executing and in high pressure moments.

Honestly, like I I think that I mean there's there's really no difference. It's just a matter about what's happening in game. You know, like it's just uh the game execution. Uh we we gotta play better. Uh, we gotta take accountability as a group. And like this is this is a hundred percent on us as players. Like, we just gotta we just gotta do a better job.

Now, if you're Pete, you gotta be sitting there going, man, I really signed up for this. You see the dumpster fire that's going on up in the up in Flushing, Queens, don't you? I mean, he went, he's going, Man, I went from that to this. Granted, they gave me a nice payday, but man, I want to win too. And boy, oh boy, is there some dysfunction here? Because I'm sure in his mind he's like, oh my goodness. All I want to do is win baseball games and provide a veteran touch to things. And here I am sitting here basically potentially, you know, trying to build this thing from the ground up, in a sense, in a word, in terms of these guys really needing to learn what it means to be big league players, because clearly they just don't have what it takes. And I just don't think there's enough, you know, you'll see when they get to first and they do their, you know, little um, you know, bird celebration, the f the feather celebration. But let's be honest, do you really see that much chemistry, camaraderie within this team? I'm not saying, you know, chemistry in a baseball team isn't exactly like chemistry on a football field or on a basketball team. But you can always tell when guys are feeling loose and they're feeling good and they're feeling, you know, like, hey man, I can't wait to get to the yard and do it all again the next day. And then you can tell the other times where it's like, oh boy, you know, we we got a we got a day game, you know, a couple hours, we just wrapped up this night game, my goodness. I uh you know, the last thing I want to do is pick up the bat tomorrow, and you know, I this is more it's more of a chore. It is work more than it's them having fun. Because at the end of the day, you're making all this money, there's pressure to perform, but you gotta realize you're having fun. Okay, you're playing the kids' game. And I think that's something that's been completely lost on these Royals players because let's face it, there was a ton of expectation for them, and rightfully so, because if you're gonna drag teams through a rebuild, if you're gonna pull teams through the mud and say, hey, you know, and your fan base through the mud, and you're gonna say, hey, these are the guys we believe in. Gunner Henderson, Adley Rutschman, Colton Kowser, these are the way of the future, Kyle Bradish, Dylan Beavers, Jackson Holliday. And for them to underperform, yeah, it is very, very upsetting. And I'm sure for them as well. It's upsetting for the fans, it's upsetting for them. Now, and I'm not sitting here trying to tell people how to feel, I'm also not sitting here making excuses for the players, because if you're at the big league level and you've made it this far, you should at least on some degree be able to handle the pressure, especially if you are as good as they say. But regardless, the Orioles again, they avoided getting swept. I mean, remember last year, what what was it in May? The Orioles had that incredible streak. It was either in May or at the end of April where they had avoided being, you know, getting swept. Um, and it was obviously a big thing viewed by just about everyone, like, oh man, they they finally got swept, oh, the streak is over. And it was kind of like a, you know, you kind of brushed it off like, eh, okay, you know, whatever, and then they'll go and win the next series. Well, that never seemed to really show itself. Um, and as I just spoke about, you know, them not being able to put it behind them. Now, Wednesday, after the leadoff home run by Antonacci for the White Sox against Dean Kramer in his first start back as the Orioles uh designate the catcher Dom Keegan for assignment, and optioned Trey Gibson down to triple A Norfolk and a couple of corresponding moves there to call up Dean Kramer from the 60-day IL. Well, what do you get? Well, you got six innings of one run baseball, allowing four hits, four strikeouts, and a walk, and the Orioles offense, well, they were silent. They were no hit. They looked like, once again, man, this is gonna be a long day. Everyone buckle up, and then we got to the fifth. And finally, Tyler O'Neill decided to remind everyone. I'm still on the Baltimore Orioles as he hits the game tying Homer. Leote Tavera strikes out, but then Holiday walks with one out. Blaze Alexander singles, they go to the bullpen, they pull Schultz. You know, just I mean now, Schultz threw 87 pitches and they pull him. Now you're coming up on third time through the order, so that's why they did it. And they go, hey, we gotta get we gotta get into our into our bullpen now. So they go to the pen, and they proceed to give up a single to Gunnar Henderson, then an RBI single to Adley Rutchman, sack fly by Taylor Ward, wild pitch by Trevor Rid uh by the reliever Trevor Richards, who then comes in to replace Brian Hudson, who took out Schultz, and now that's three pitchers. Wild pitch scores Gunner, Pete Walks to uh put runners at first and second, then unfortunately Kobe Mayo would flatten the inning. Orioles would scratch out two more. Dean Kramer was fantastic through six. They turn to Tyler Wells. He gets he gets through two innings, and Tyler Wells has been impressive. 3 180 already so far this year. Being on the IL for me, I feel like a waste of space because I'm not bringing any value, I'm not adding to anything up here except uh um not adding on the field. Um so that that's probably one of the hardest things for me uh rehab was watching from a distance and not feeling like you get to be a part of something. Um but it's it's great to be back and uh kind of start from here.

We continue to talk about the injuries, it's continued to plague them, it's continued to obviously hurt the Orioles um throughout this season. We've spoken about it time and time again. Now, does Dean really you know, it's always good to have extra starting pitching. And I think it kind of gives you confidence now in all five guys that they can go out there and get the job done. At least you, you know, you have confidence, and hey, I've seen them do it, they can do it again. You know, I've seen Kyle Bradish have success. I've seen Trevor Rogers have success. Not you know, not so much this year on a consistent basis, but I've seen it happen in the past. Uh Shane Bass has given me a reason to believe he can go out there and give me six or seven strong innings. Um, as I mean, let's face it, biggest surprise of the year has been Brandon Young. Now, Dean Kramer just gives you a more solidified starting five. What he doesn't do, and I'm not trying to disparage anything that he can bring, but he, you know, he can add to the bullpen. Now he can give you a little bit more help so that way you're not seeing games like Trey Gibson gave you the other day, and he give you more of a chance. Problem is the offense now has to take that opportunity that these starters give them. When they go six, seven innings and give up three or less runs, and they don't allow hard contact, and they're not allowing momentum to the other team. You have to be able to go out there and take advantage of the opportunity and be a team that's able to look like it's a team worthy of being a plus five hundred baseball team and getting back into a wild card race. Let's just face it. And the fact that you're four and a half games back, it does present you with that opportunity, but you got to take advantage of that opportunity, and you're just not seeing that right now. Now, more bad luck struck the Orioles yesterday because while they got the win, Ryan Helsley, who was warming up in the bullpen, looking like he was going to enter the game. This happened, and here was Craig Albernaz explaining it.

My level of concern of something like that is always high. It's almost like you prepare for the worst and hope for the best. You know, hopefully everything comes out and he's fine. But you know, you're always concerned when Bullpen calls out and says that you can't go. But like you said, we'll kind of see where where this leads and more information. Hopefully, it was kind of just uh precautionary.

Anytime you hear a pitcher say they've got discomfort, you're just going, Oh my goodness. Now Helsley, who already dealt with an elbow injury earlier this season, who was out earlier in the season, and you had to piece together the back end of your bullpen as best as you could with Rico Garcia and Yanir Kano and the boys. That right now looks like it's going to because when you got Helsley back, you thought, okay, here we go. And he just hasn't been the same. You know, when he came back in that first appearance against the Mariners, he gave up the two home runs in Seattle, then he blows the save against the Dodgers, then he struggles against the Angels in extra innings, and then this yesterday, it's gotta leave you feeling, oh my goodness, here we go again. And that very well could be the case. And unless they're gonna make some move where they go out and get a mid to high leverage reliever soon here, this is just not gonna be and listen, I know I'm kind of preparing for the worst here when I say that, but you know, if a Michaelyas is as serious as he thinks he is about this team making the postseason, one of the biggest areas, if not the biggest area that you need to figure out a way to get better in is in the bullpen. Now there are some, you know, offensive pieces you can probably tighten up as well, but that bullpen is a joke. It's an absolute joke. Now after the game, so I just want to talk about this real quick. A little miscellaneous moment, a little, you know, shooting the you know what. So I said on social media, and as I said here earlier, as you heard me talk about Tyler O'Neill. I said, nice of Tyler O'Neal to remind all of us that he's still on the team. And you know, it got some laughs, it got some humor, because let's face it, that's what it is. Okay, they're seven games under 500. As I mentioned, they've lost five out of their last six series. We're looking at a core of Baltimore Orioles players that have just been absolute jokers here in the last two seasons. Let's just face facts, this is not working at this present time. And we're all talking about firing the you know, president of baseball operations, you know, there's talks about, you know, Craig Albanz, is he the guy? You know, this, that, and the third. And we can talk about that even too at a later date. So I put that out there, and this yo-yo, John Donovan, said this on Twitter. He said, Just never happy are you? And I respond that he finally did something this year considering how much he got paid. I said, Yes, I'm stoic, being sarcastic, of course. There's seven games under 500 now heading into July. I wouldn't imagine any O'S fan, in spite of a win, which in parentheses, the joy lasts only so long, considering said record, would be happy right now. If you are, then the last thirty years are a picnic for you. His response You piss and moan when they lose and you complain when they win. Make up your effing mind. Wow, John. Hostile, cursing, very bad combination, John, very bad. And while you're at it, why don't you figure out how to work the profile function on uh on social media here? Doesn't look like you you can figure that one out. I'm not sure if you could figure out your elbow from your backside either. But let's just face it here, John. Number one, log off. If you can't tell that sarcasm, social media is not for you. I'm sorry, man. Get lost. Maybe spend time reading a book. If there's one in front of you, pick it up and read it. Stop wasting my time and everyone else's time by going out and actually interacting with people. Doesn't seem like you you have that simple function that most of us do have. But that's neither here nor there. If there are people who cannot you're seven games under 500 at this point. Fans are allowed to piss and moan as you, you know, so graciously spewed off into the atmosphere. Fans are allowed to be upset and complain about their team. There's nothing wrong with that. You were sold a bill of goods on this team this season. You were sold an offense that was going to improve, you were sold a team that should be a championship contender a couple years ago, and at this year, at the very least, maybe not be seven games under 500 and losing series to the stinking Angels, losing two out of six games lose I'm sorry, winning two out of six games at home in a homestand heading into the month of July, ending the month of June. I mean, you gotta be kidding me. And you're gonna come at me? Give me a break. And there are and there are a couple of oh, you know, it's quit whining, we got another one tomorrow. I'm sorry, am I on the team? Am I on am I the person that needs to quit whining? Am I on the team? Am I not allowed to complain and want more for this organization that, by the way, for the last 30 years has been an absolute joke of itself. I mean, just look up how many years they've had winning records since 97. Since they forced Davy Davy Johnson out. It's been pretty damn pathetic, if you ask me. Pretty damn pathetic. And if you think otherwise, not only are you lost, you should have your head examined. Now, if we were on radio, I'd say we're gonna go to break, but we're not. After that little mini rant. Next is the Cincinnati Reds, and you take to the road to face Brady Singer tomorrow night, who's 3-7 with a 5-1-2 ERA, the former Kansas City Royal. He's 3-2 with a 3-2-5 ERA at home this year. His last two starts at home, he won 12 innings, gave up a run on five hits in the collective with 12 strikeouts and five walks. Now Trevor Rogers is going to be starting for the Orioles. 5-7 with a 4-9 ERA. Last start versus the Reds came in 2024, where we won 5-2-3 innings, gave up two runs on two hits with three walks and four strikeouts. He's 0-1 with a 7-7-1 ERA versus the Reds on the road in two appearances. His first featured him allowing six runs on eight hits and three and two-thirds innings with two walks and five strikeouts. That's the one before the 24 start. I believe that was in 22. Now, game two, we'll see Nickelodolo taking the mountain. He's 2-2 with a 5-0-5 ERA and 1-2 with a 6-3-0 ERA and six starts this season. Then it'll be Brandon Young for the Orioles, who's 6-2 with a 3-1-1 ERA. I mean, he's been absolutely fantastic and could very well be the Orioles representative for the All-Star. Well, Ianir Kano might get the nod as the lone Orioles representative, but Brandon Young has been fantastic. He started last year against the Reds. He gave up three runs on seven hits with three walks and three strikeouts in four innings. And then game three, we'll see the young Rhett Loader take the mound for Cincinnati. He was three-six with a five-three-one ERA. He was selected in the first round of the 2023 MLB draft. The O's haven't faced him at all in his career. Now he's 1-1 with a 3-5-4 ERA and five starts this year at home, where he's gone at least five innings in each start, but in four out of the five, he's gone into the sixth. So we'll see what that does. Kyle Braddish, he's five and eight with a three-seven seven ERA. He gave up two runs on five hits and five innings with seven strikeouts in his lone matchup in his career against the Cincinnati Reds. He's three-four with a four-one-five ERA and eight starts this year on the road. In his last two outings, though, he's pitched into the eighth in each start, and he's given up a run on eleven hits with twenty-one strikeouts and three walks in two starts combined. So Kyle Bradish, hopefully he puts, you know, gets the bad taste out of his mouth from Sunday's unfortunate loss. He'll be pitching on a week's rest, so we'll see what that does for him. But as I just gave you the numbers, if there's ever time to like sweep a team and maybe get yourself back into this thing a little bit, you know, give the fans maybe a reason to, you know, pick their heads up off the pillow and go, you know, oh my goodness. Could there be light at the end of the tunnel? They're only two and a half games back of a wildcard spot or whatever it is. There's that possibility as well. I mean, we're we're all very aware. Uh you look at the AL West, I mean, the Texas Rangers, who are just, you know, middling along there for a little while. They're now in first place. The Mariners are in the wildcard hunt. As are the Astros and as are the A's, who are forty-one and forty-six. A lot of people very high on the A's, now forty-one and forty-six, a game and a half better than the O's, which the Blue Jays are also a game and a half better, twins are two games better, Astros two and a half games better, and the Mariners of obviously four and a half games better. Well, folks, I'd love to sit here and tell you that hopefully by the next time we're talking, they're, you know, five games under 500 and they're sitting two games out of a wild card spot, but I'm not gonna try and do what the Orioles front office has been doing trying to do to you for a while now, and that's sell you this bill of goods. Uh we'll sit here and see what happens. Obviously, we have the 4th of July coming up on Saturday. Now, I'm not gonna be here to recap each and every game if you know anything exciting does happen Friday and Saturday. So I won't talk to you again until Sunday.
