OT month is now in the past, but Sarah and I had such a great time over on our Instagram Sarah the ABCs of OT preneurship that we wanted to follow-up here with you on the podcast, and what made this campaign a success for both us and the OTpreneur community. Are you thinking about starting an occupational therapy business, but don't even know where to begin? Whether you're starting something on the side or going full time in your business, the OTpreneur podcast is what you need. This show will help you get in the right mindset and give you actionable tips to go from just an idea to OTpreneur. Let's go. I'm Jason Davies, and with me is my full time mom, full time OTpreneur co host, Sarah Putt. How you doing today, Sarah? I'm good, Jason. You know, the month of April slash, like, right after April getting into May is always such a fun time with OT month and just seeing everything that all the amazing OT practitioners and students are doing out there. So, yeah, I'm excited to jump into today and and share a little bit about what we did. Yeah. It was a lot of fun. And I I think I just realized that, you know, for the introduction, one of these times, I'm gonna have to, like, Putt comment on your advocacy because, you know, this year we did some advocacy with April OTPreneur, but you are just always advocating for OT. Whether it be here on OTPreneur, over at OT For Life. Like, that is just one of your things. You love to advocate for OT. You know, and it's one of those things, like, I never, like, if you would have told me when I was like in OT school or something, like you're going to be a big advocate. I'd be like, what? Like, I don't know that that's Putt not me. I think it's just that I'm passionate about the field of occupational therapy and I'm passionate about, you know, my practice area of early intervention. I'm passionate about podcasting and that's a great way to really kind of use your voice to advocate for the profession. And then of course, running my own practice, I'm very passionate about OT preneurship. So I feel like the passion just kind of leads into the advocacy because I just love sharing who we are and what we do and really just kind of getting, getting OT out into the world more so than it is. Yeah. Yeah, absolutely. And and to be honest with everyone out there, I think that's kind of what led to our whole ABCs of OT over on OTpreneur. And if you haven't had a chance to check out our Instagram, it is OT OTpreneur podcast, all one word. Be sure to check it out because what we did this past April is we did the ABCs of OT, which have really become a thing under Shanna Marie, and we'll talk more about her in just a moment. But the ABCs of OT, our idea was to not highlight particular words within OT preneurship OT occupational therapy in general or concepts. Instead, we took a route of highlighting the areas that OT entrepreneurs are getting into and actually highlighting the specific OTPreneur themselves. And I wanna throw it over to Sarah because she has a great explanation of why we wanted to do this. So, Sarah, why why did you wanna do the ABCs of OT and just highlight so many OTpreneurs? Well, I mean, as a as a side note, I have done it for multiple years over on OT For Life. I've done it on the real OTs of early intervention. I participated in the ABCs of OT, and I know you have also done it a few times as well, Jason, at the OT Schoolhouse. So we've done it in our own kind of respective individual niches, but I think there were kind of, like there's kind of one big thing that happened. We got a comment, gosh, on a post a while, like, a few months OTA, and it was a comment on Instagram. And this this comment has stuck with with me. Clearly, it stuck with me because it it really pushed me and inspired me to come up with the idea for this year's ABCs of OTA, OTpreneurship edition. And the comment was, basically, tell me what OT businesses are out there or could be explored. I have never come across a successful one. And I read that comment and I was like, woah, hold up. Alright. Like, we we need to be sharing more about what OT OTPreneur are currently doing and thriving in. Right? Because there are so many different ways, so many different areas, so many different business models that OT preneurs can get into and utilize within their business. And if people don't know what those are, that's that's one thing that we easily can start sharing, right, and start connecting the dots of what is it that you can be doing and, and sharing what people are actually doing, not just what you can do, but what people are actually doing and, and having a lot of success with as well. So that comment, when I read it, you know, I just I couldn't let it go. I I created a post all about it and sharing some different kind of business models and business ideas that you can do as an OTPreneur. But then I came to Jason, gosh, 2, 3 weeks before April 1st and was like, hey, I have this idea. I know it's kind of crazy. We don't have a lot of time to plan for it. What do you think? And, Jason, your response was? Absolutely. And, you know, going back to that whole we love to be transparent thing. Transparency, I saw it as being 2 great reasons for us to do it. 1 was selfish and one was completely unselfish, to be fair. Right? The the selfish reason was that is a great idea for our Instagram. Like, that is going to help us grow on Instagram, which is relatively new for us. You know? We've been doing the podcast, and then we said we're not gonna use social media. And then sure enough, we started social media. But we've been struggling to produce content on Instagram. And so we figured, you know what? This will force us to produce content. It's going to force us to put stuff out there, and it's probably gonna be great. You know, the people that we highlight are also going to share it. And now you can do collaborative posts. So most of our posts were collaborative with the people we highlighted. So it went out to our people and their people. So it was a win win for everyone, which then leads to the Sarah less selfish reason, which was to highlight all the OTPreneur that are doing amazing things out there. I think a lot of people, if they just saw what we did without looking too deep into the OTpreneurs that we highlighted, they would probably think that all of those OTpreneurs are already, like, super successful business owners. And that is absolutely not the case. Some are some are doing, you know, amazing things have a profitable business. But we also highlighted some OT preneurs that are like in their business building plan phase, like they haven't even had a single client. And that's what was really cool. And while why I just jumped on board because I was excited to share other stories, which I think you you and I, that's part of the reason that we started OTPreneur in the first place was to build people up and to let them share their OTpreneur journey. So, yeah, I was was all on board. It was and it ended up being a lot of fun. It was. I mean, it it's a lot. It it is a OT. And, you know, big shout out to Shannon Marie OT. Shannon's a good friend of mine, and, you know, she's been doing this for 8 years, and I have talked to her and heard the behind the scenes of what she actually does throughout the month. I mean, she is reposting 100, 100 of posts every single day for the 1st 26 days of April. And I and she has a full time job on top of that, and I know how much effort she puts into this. And so I really just want to, you know, give an applause, a shout out to Shannon because she's amazing for starting this. And we actually we featured Shannon on the very last day, so for letters that you can go check out and hear a little bit more of the passion and enthusiasm coming from her. So, you know, not only were we supporting Shannon, right? And supporting Shannon and the ABCs that has become this, I want to say massive advocacy effort, but we're also continuing to advocate for the profession of occupational therapy through advocating for what we can do as OTpreneurs and in OTpreneurship. So we kind of took our own little spin. Of course, we're going to talk about OTpreneurship here. And I can't even like put to words how amazing the response was from this whole thing. I had people reaching out consistently throughout the month, and they were just like, oh my gosh. This is so fun. I love seeing the post. I can't wait to see who you're gonna highlight tomorrow. And that just I was already excited and, like, enthusiastic about it. But when people were reaching out, sharing their own passion, I was like, oh my gosh. I like, I'm even more so excited to continue to share and continue to post. And, yes, it was a lot of work. It was a lot of work, but it was it was so much fun as well. And connecting with other OTPreneur mean, we knew several of them. We had previous connections with many of them, but there were a few cold emails or cold LinkedIn messages that we sent out too. And that was also amazing because we connected with people that we wouldn't have otherwise connected with. Some people were from our course that we put together a few months ago. One person was someone who attended one of our conference sessions at Putt. It was just really cool to be able to connect with people, and I'm sure we'll continue to now that we've made that connection, I'm sure we'll continue to connect with them. And, hopefully, many of them will be guests on the on the show because they all have so much to share with, especially other OTPreneur. Right? They've been there. They've done that. And even if they haven't been there and done that, they're learning it on the fly as we speak, and they will be an expert in one piece, if not many pieces of OTrepreneurship in the very near future because, you know, they're they're not talking about it anymore. They're now getting out there and doing it. And the one other thing that I thought about before we dive into the reflections was just that, and I guess this kind of is a reflection in itself, is that people were so open to doing this. I think every single person that we reached out to either didn't respond probably just because they have so much going on and maybe they're not on Instagram and we didn't email them and they prefer email or vice versa. But everyone who responded was so excited to be a part of OT. Even if they had never done a reel before. Like, they were really excited about that. So, that was that was really cool. So Yeah. That Yeah. I guess that kind of is a reflection. But Right. Yeah. It's fine. We'll we'll jump into the reflections. But yeah. Like, I think, like, when we were initially planning this, I was, like, okay, you know, we'll make our list and then we'll kinda go through and we'll we'll we'll talk to people. And I'm, like, there's gonna be a few people that are, like, you know, no thanks. Like, I'm too busy. I don't wanna be a part of this or whatever. And honestly, like, everybody was like, yeah, sign me up. I I'm not entirely sure what I need to do or how I'm gonna do it, but, like, I I will do it. And that was so refreshing that everyone was just, like, yep. Let's go. Even if they had never done a Reel before OT weren't comfortable on video OT brand new to Instagram. And we'll, we'll talk about, we'll, we'll talk about somebody specifically in just a minute, but you know, everybody's busy, but everyone really just kind of came together and wanted to support OT preneurship, really, and highlight what they're doing. And that was so amazing to see. When we had another person who was like, you know what, Sarah, Jason, for you, I will come out of my shell and post a reel. And that was actually more common Mhmm. Than I think we realized. Because a lot of people didn't tell us that, but when we went back and started looking at some of their Instagrams, we could see that these people weren't posting reels. They were posting, if anything, you know, somewhat generic Instagram picture based, either photo or like a little tip. Right? And so there were several people, I wanna say at least maybe 7 to 10, that this was the first ever reel that they ever completed. And they just kind of took OT. And we didn't give them a ton of time to do this. So it's really impressive that they went with it. Also, not a ton of direction either. And I think we did that on purpose because we wanted to kind of leave it open for them to share what they wanted to. We I think we did, like, 4, maybe, like, 4 ish, 4, 5 questions that were, like, these are what you can answer, but, like, please do do with this what you want because we want to have kind of that artistic ability of sharing what it is that they do. So, yeah, it was a little like, you don't have a lot of time. You don't have a lot of direction. Alright, go. Just send us what you got. Yeah. And it ended up being fantastic. I mean, some people were getting their video to us a week ahead of time, and then there were some where we got it the day of. And then we were just like, alright, quick turnaround. Let's post OT, add some captions, tag the person in the video OT collaborate the person in the video, whatever you wanna call that. Boom. Put it out there. And Sarah and I were just continuously amazed, like, every single day, we're like, how have we done 10 in a row? How have we done 15 in a row? Have we we've done 20 in a row. Are we gonna do all that? 26 without missing a day. You know how many times I have started the ABCs of OT and then just got lost? Like, the same amount of times that I've started, like, a 30 day workout challenge and just gotten completely demolished by, like, day 4. So this was quite a feat. Like, good job, Sarah. Yeah. We did it. High five high five to you too, Jason. Because, like, I mean, we we split the workload, you know. So I was I was responsible for about half. So, you know, 13 ish and you had about 13 ish depending on how it actually worked out, but it was pretty close to being 5050. And like there, I remember there was like one day. Well, for me, I know I was posting like super late. Like, I mean, I was posting once my kids went to bed and it was like 9 o'clock. I'm like throwing things together for that day, not for the next day. I was not ahead. And I remember like one day, because Jason was always, you were always way more, like ahead than I was. You would post earlier in the day. And I remember I didn't feel like it. Oh, I did. I felt it. And I remember, like, one day, I'm like, oh my gosh. It's getting late. Like, I'm about to head to bed. I haven't seen him Putt. And I was, like, should I text him to remind him? No. He's got this. And you pulled through, and it was great. And we did not miss a day. And I feel like I'm the same way last year. I tried to do last year, I had the idea that I was gonna do a reel every single day for the ABCs on OT For Life. And I wanna say I got through maybe the first, like, 5 or 6, and then started missing Jayson, and then I started lumping them together. So I was doing about 5 or 6 day days in one reel to make up for it. So I was proud of ourselves for pulling this off, getting it done, you know, and it wasn't just you and me having to do the work. We were also dependent on the OT preneurs that we were highlighting to get us the information and get us the the video so then we could also share it. So there were a lot of moving pieces. And that was a lot of trust too. Right? Like people going back and forth with communicating with them, them asking, what do you want in there? And that's kinda saying, no, it's really open. We suggest that you go check out our Instagram to see what a few other people have done and make it your own type of thing. As you mentioned, we kinda left it really open, and we didn't want this to be, like, the same thing every single day. This is my business. This is what I do. This is how you can start your own business. We didn't want it to be that same template over and over and over again. So we really left it open. I wanna take it back to that selfish reason a little bit for doing this, and I hate using the word selfish. But to be honest, like, this kinda was. It did help us. I I think it helped us tremendously in various ways because, I mean, if you just look at the straight data, we doubled our Instagram followers. I mean, doubled maybe, like, oh my gosh. Double that's crazy. 202 to 250 extra followers now. We

now have, I think, like, 4:

40 or something like that. But that that's sizable, especially when we weren't posting a lot. And that leads to the other thing that really helped us. And I think will continue to help moving forward is that we learned a OT, or at least I know I learned a lot about Instagram. Such as if you schedule a reel for the future, it will not tag the person as a collaborator. You have to schedule it in the moment or post it in the moment to have a collaborator on a reel. I learned that the hard way very quickly. Putt, yeah, I think just in general, this goes back to something we've said over and over on this podcast, just get started. And that's kinda what happened here. Like, Sarah and I just got started with Instagram. We had a, quote, to some degree, half baked idea that we're gonna put out there, and we just started running with it. And we pulled it off, and we learned a lot in the process. We gained new followers, new people that are interested in OT preneurship all along the way. And, yeah, it it was a really cool, thing to do. So I, a 100% agree with that. And, you know, I know you're you keep saying, like, it's selfish Jayson, but, like, the reason we're not just telling you this so you know that we're being selfish. We're telling you this to really showcase this is kind of the logistics. This is the real, the reality of, like, why we, we decided to do something with this and, and really what it was going to bring to the business of OTpreneur. Right? And, like, how then you, the listener listening right now, can potentially adapt this and do something similar for yourself. Right? Show up on Instagram, show up on another social media channel. If you haven't, you know, if you're, if you're not on social media yet, think about a platform that you could be on and how you can start to show up, even if you don't have the idea completely ironed OT. But you can start to show OTA. You can start to learn it if you're not familiar with the platform. And even if you are, the platforms change all the time. And like you said, Jason, like you learned a lot. I was like, I I actually learned a lot too because I there were so many different things in different ways. Like, the the collaborators was brand new when I was trying to figure that out in the beginning and realized that it's it's not where I thought it was originally. And, you know, so just familiar familiarizing yourself with the social media platform that you're you're gonna, you know, test OT, But then also just showing up and then attempting to be consistent. And I think that's gonna be one of our goals kind of moving forward is to attempt to be more consistent on Instagram and sharing some of the content, sharing some of the posts and some of the ideas that we have, and just being able to get it out there. And, you know, of course we all have all these other hats that we wear and other obligations. And so sometimes social media just seems like it can be a beast. But what I do think is by doing this challenge, it really pushed us to to to to kind of get out there and then realize like, oh yeah, people, people want to see this. Right. People, people were also as passionate about this and excited to see it. And so that kind of helps fuel us to continue, even though we're

like, Oh gosh, you know, it's 9:

30 at night and we haven't posted anything. Okay. What are we going to do? But I think all in all, it was good even though it was a lot of work, but it ended up being a really, I think, a really good experience. A little bit earlier, I think you and I both teased talking about someone in particular. And I think we're talking about the same person, but maybe not. But was this about getting out of the comfort zone? And do you wanna share a little bit more about that? So one one of the people and businesses that I really want to kind of showcase and highlight in this episode is my dear friend, Alex Villanueva. He just started his business in April. His ribbon cutting ceremony was the same day that he sent me the reel for his letter. Oh yeah. Like he texted me the day before and Putt, and was like, Hey, I'm going to do it. I'm not entirely sure what I'm going to do. He's brand new to like social media, especially in the business aspect. And he's like, the ribbon cutting ceremony ends at like 3 o'clock. He's like, I'll get it to you within the next hour or something. And I'm like, how cool is that? Right? Like, he has been so busy. Let me let me backtrack for just a second. So Alex was actually a volunteer with my company years ago before he started OT school. So I've known Alex for a long time. I've seen him, you know, progress and grow as an OT student and then into an OT practitioner. And the second that I saw that he had started a business, I was like, high five, yes, go. I love it. His business is all about lymphedema and supporting clients that have swelling, lymphedema, all that kind of stuff. And the, the really special connection was that, and I don't know, I don't think I've brought it up on the podcast yet, but another one of my good friends, recently passed away and she was huge in the world of lymphedema. Her name was Amelia and you know, the universe is just, it's so interesting to me that, you know, I lose one of my good friends and then I see another one of my friends step into the world of OT preneurship, supporting clients with lymphedema. And I was like, wow, like, I'm getting chills just talking about it because I'm just like, you know, Amelia was so passionate about it and I know she'd be smiling down, seeing and seeing all the work that he's doing and everything that he's putting into it. So that was a little bit, little bit of a side note there, but, there was just, there was a lot of really, really just kind of special things that were all happening with Alex and the little, the letter L and the way that it all kind of panned out. And it was, it was so beautiful and I was just so excited to be able to support him throughout this like super busy time. And really as like his business is getting off the ground, like literally just starting and so cool to have him jump right in. He hadn't done a talking Reel before. And yeah, I mean, I just, I, I love him and his business and it was just so great to have him be a part of this. Yeah. And that's just one example. I was actually thinking of a different Jayson, so I'm glad because we get to talk about both of them. I was thinking of Esther Bay from Modified Independent. She had an Instagram, but she had zero OTP on her Instagram. She has just been too busy, honestly, with the whole actual business side of her business. She's consulting with, with beauty product companies, as well as I think she has something coming up with, Macy's or JC Penney's or something like that, where she's doing an event with them. And she's just been so busy on that side, you know, the unpretty business side that we've talked about, that she hasn't really had a time to be active on, on social media. And so she sent us a video, which was, again, her first reel, and she even expressed how, you know, she was nervous about it, but she was glad that we we reached out to her and that she was able to do it because she knew that it was a learning experience. And, Sarah, I don't know if you even know this, if you saw the email or not, but she actually sent me 2 videos. Did you see the other video? Not. So while Esther was recording her video, her little toddler wanted to record a video too. And so she sent me a video of her toddler doing the reel as well. It was like a 20 second video. I could barely make out what she was saying, but it was just the cutest little thing. And that's like again, it just kind of, really goes into entrepreneurship, OTPreneur, like, some of the many reasons that we get into OT. Is because it can be kind of a family thing. Like, eventually, the family gets involved. I know you've talked a lot about your husband helping you out with your business, and I know my wife has been very supportive and helped me out with a little bit over time. And, eventually, I'm sure our kids will somehow work their way into our businesses. And, yeah, so that was just a little extra tidbit that, you know, no one knows, but we built that rapport and we built a connection with so many of these people. Esther, Alex, every single one of the 20 I mean, I know you and I did a few, so it wasn't exactly 26, maybe 20 or so people that we featured. It was just it was a great experience, and I'm excited for what comes next. Alright. Well, you mentioned moving forward. We wanna, you know, just just, I think, be a little bit more persistent, and we've already fallen behind. I don't think we posted anything in the 5 days, 6 days, 7 days, 6, but, you know. I I We did did a break. I need a break. It did. You know, keeping up with the Putt, and then we didn't even mention posting the stories too. Like, it it it is just a lot. And even though, you know, it's a few minutes here, maybe an hour here, it all adds up. And I think I needed a little bit of a break just from it was it was just a OT. And I put some things on the back burner to be able to focus on getting those posts out. So, yeah, I need a little bit of break, but it's okay. It's it's good. Yeah. And, Sarah, I must say thank you so much for posting to the stories because that is not something I did very much. And when you're saying that other things got behind, sorry, podcast listeners. Hopefully, you're following us over on Instagram because that is part of the reason that a podcast, I don't think actually went out during the entire month of April is because we were so busy keeping everything up on the Instagram, the Instagram. Yeah. I'm old. So I think the last thing that we really wanted to point out too, is that we don't just want to stay active on Instagram, but I think this is this particular aspect of sharing other OTA stories and their journeys. I think we wanted to specifically continue to do that. Obviously OT once a day, but once a month, really reaching out to someone and just saying, hey, you know, we'd love to share what you have done as an OTA to help inspire other OTs out there, other OT practitioners that want to start their own business. Are you open to it? And, I don't know. I I it was a lot of fun. I wanna continue doing that, and I'm sure you'll be too. And I I had people, like, we would we would feature somebody and then they'd be like, oh, have you, you know, are you planning on featuring so and so? And I'm like, not in this, but yes, like they're on our list. There were, you know, there Sarah so many more people that we want to add to this list. And, unfortunately, we only had, you know, 26 days to be able to 26 different businesses and people that we could highlight. And so there's a lot more that we wanna share. And so, yeah, I think moving forward, we will continue this at least once a month. I mean, maybe we can bump it up, but we're gonna start small and and see if we can do it once a month and continue to highlight this community. And I think too, one of the things that, you know, I'm going to, I'm going to throw it Putt, out there so it will hold myself accountable. I really want to start I wanna create a highlight on our Instagram page that will share all the posts. So you can literally click on the highlight, and you can see all the different letters that we did, all the businesses that we did, and then continue to add that. So we, you know, we almost have a bank of these different types of businesses or, or ideas for businesses. So if you are trying to come up with an idea, trying to narrow down your idea, you can be able to go there and see a OTA, you know, just so much value from all these businesses that are out there, and they are killing it right now. Absolutely. So, to the person, you know, who left that comment a few months ago saying, so tell me what OT businesses are there or could be explored, I've never come across a successful one, to you, we say thank you. Thank you for lighting a fire under our butts to, get this all out there because it was a lot of fun. We made a lot of new friends. We met a lot of amazing people. We had a lot of people also just find us that are now interested in starting a business or know where to go if they're interested in starting a business. And so this is just a fantastic way to grow the OTPreneur as a whole, not just as OTPreneur, but the entire OTpreneur community as a whole. And Yeah. So thank you to that person. We appreciate it. And with that, I think we are going to wrap up. Before I do, if you are interested in being highlighted as a business owner over on the OTPreneur website OT maybe even on this podcast or our Instagram, please reach out to us, OTpreneur@gmail.com. That'll get over to us, and who knows, maybe we'll collaborate together on something amazing. And also, if you have an idea for a business and you're curious if anybody else is doing that and you'd like to see if there's somebody else doing something similar or kind of it within the same niche or something like that, like, let us know. Reach out to us and be like, hey, I'm interested in x, y, and z, And maybe we might already know somebody that's in that kind of realm. And if not, that will push us to go see is somebody else doing that, and we can kind of share them as well. So kind of 2 ways to reach out to us. Bottom line, reach out to us. Let us know. And just so you know, if your business is x, y, or z, it's gonna be really hard to find someone doing the same thing. I know because we tried to find people doing x, y, and z, and those were the hardest letters to find. But with that, we will end this episode. Thank you so much again for tuning into the OTPreneur podcast, and we will catch you in the next episode and over OT OTPreneur.
