What Does It Mean To Be Reformed? part 2
A sermon outline based on Ephesians 1:1-14
Hillcrest CRC, May 11, 2025, 9:30am
Rev. Curt Walters
1. Predestination is thoroughly biblical. (Genesis 12:1-3, Deuteronomy 7:6, Psalm 33:12, Matthew 22:14, John 6:37, Acts 13:48, 2 Thessalonians 2:13)
2. Why does God adopt some but not others?
It has nothing to do with us. (Ephesians 2:8-9, Romans 9:16, 2 Timothy 1:9)
It has everything to do with God. (Ephesians 1:5, Romans 9:15, 20-21)
3. What is the purpose of God’s election?
Our holiness. (Deuteronomy 7:6, 2 Timothy 1:9, Ephesians 1:4)
To be a blessing to others. (Genesis 12:2-3, Ephesians 2:10)
To point to himself and his grace. (Ephesians 1:6,7,12)
To provide us with comfort and assurance. (John 10:28-29, Romans 8:38-39)
Next steps...
- Do you have Christian friends who don’t believe in predestination? Share the Scripture passages listed under #1 above and discuss together what they might mean.
- Imagine that every non-Christian you meet has been chosen by God and that God wants to use you to bring them into His kingdom. Pray that the Holy Spirit will give you opportunities to bless others and show them His love.
- Read and reflect on Jesus’ words in Matthew 7:15-27. According to this passage, what is the evidence that we have been chosen by God? Do you see that evidence in your own life?
