“DO NOT JUDGE”
The Most Misunderstood Verses in Scripture, part 1
A sermon outline based on Matthew 7:1-6 and 1 Corinthians 5
Hillcrest CRC, June 22, 2025, 9:30am
Rev. Curt Walters
1. Is judging others a sin? (Matthew 7:1)
2. We will all be judged. (Matthew 7:2, 25:31-46, Revelation 20:11-15)
3. We need to focus on our own sins first. (Matthew 7:2-6)
4. Every verse must be read in context. (Matthew 7:1-6, 1 Corinthians 5)
5. The Corinthian church provides us with a case study. (1 Corinthians 5)
- They were proud of their tolerance. (1 Corinthians 5:2,6)
- Paul strongly rebukes them! ( 1 Corinthians 5:2-13)
- We must judge other Christians. (1 Corinthians 5:12-13, Hebrews 10:24-31)
- But we should do so humbly and gently. (Galatians 6:1)
6. What are some key take-aways?
- God gives us moral standards in the Bible.
- It’s not our responsibility to call out non-Christians.
- We are responsible for each other.
- Mutual accountability and discipline is good for us!
Next steps...
- The next time you hear someone say that we should not judge others: 1. Ask them why it’s OK for them to judge people who judge others. 2. Ask them why it’s OK to judge some sins (racism, murder) but not others (sexual sins). 3. If they’re a Christian, ask them to read 1 Corinthians 5:12&13 and see if it changes their mind.
- Read and reflect on the words of Jesus in Revelation 22:12-15.
- When you find yourself judging someone, focus your attention on your own sins and deal with them first before casting judgment on someone else.
