The Foundations of Our Faith, part 12

A sermon outline based on Luke 19:1-10 & Belgic Confession article 17

  1. He was the chief tax collector. (Luke 19:1)
  2. He was short and wanted to see Jesus. (Luke 19:3-4)  
  3. No one was more surprised than Zacchaeus. (Luke 19:5) 
  4. Why would Jesus accept hospitality from Zacchaeus? (Luke 15:1-7, 19:5-6, )
  5. Zacchaeus was thrilled that someone like Jesus would come to his house.  (Luke 19:5-6) 
  6. How did the people react to Jesus making himself a houseguest of Zacchaeus. (Luke 3:15-16, 19:7)  
  7. Jesus would destroy evil, but not in the way that they expected. (Luke 3:15-16, John 1:29)
  8. Zacchaeus was a changed man. (Luke 19:8-9)

Next steps...

  • Ponder the truth that God knows your name, your sins, and your circumstances and sent His Son to seek you and to save you. Offer a prayer of thanksgiving!
  • Rather than feeling angry about sinful people and wishing God’s judgment on them, ask God to help you be as patient with them as He is with you, so that everyone can hear the good news and have an opportunity to be saved.
  • Who has God placed in your life that is spiritually lost? Go out of your way to pray for them, care about them, and offer God’s amazing grace and forgiveness to them.
