We go back to Ghostbusters (1984) and get obsessed all over again with how it blends real stakes, practical effects, and comedy that stays mostly subtle even when the premise is ridiculous. The result feels less like a nonstop joke machine and more like a legit paranormal action movie that just happens to be hilarious when it wants to be.

Welcome And The Movie Pick
SPEAKER_00Hello and welcome to the We Recommend Podcast, a movie podcast where every week we recommend a movie for you to watch and then come back here and listen to us discuss. I'm Jesse. I'm Jason. We came, we saw, we kicked its ass! Because this week we recommend Ghostbusters!
SPEAKER_03Alright! Yay! That's awesome. So I recently went to the East Coast. And on the way, I saw we stopped at a lot of like toys like privately owned like toy stores, you know? Yeah. And I saw so much Ghostbuster stuff. I saw like there were these two eight-inch dolls that were just Professor Binkman and uh Ego. Yeah. And it was thirty dollars for those two guys. They didn't even have Proton packs. What the fuck?
SPEAKER_00It was how much again?
SPEAKER_03Thirty dollars.
SPEAKER_00Thirty dollars for those two figures. Just for some eight-inch figures to sit on.
SPEAKER_03That's crazy. But no, you see it everywhere. It's amazing. And did you ever you ever cross streams?
SPEAKER_00I haven't. Yeah. But I love movies all built on a joke of a P joke.
unknownI know.
SPEAKER_03Do you think it was intentional? I think that's what makes this the perfect movie. With these guys? It's so subtle. So subtle. Because I remember growing up, like that was a thing. Like you don't cross streams and it was immediately a pea joke.
SPEAKER_00Because you know, like in the South, we all had to uh when we went to places, we peed in troughs.
SPEAKER_03Yes, so weird. Or on the other in our case, you go to pee, and then like your brother also has to pee, so you go to pee at the same time, and you could, you know, you can make games out of that, like sword fighting and crossing the streams. But when I I dated this girl in college, she and recently when I came in today, we talked about poop. All right, dog poop, particularly. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Specifically dog poop.
SPEAKER_00Usually before the podcast, we She was kind of a naturalist.
SPEAKER_03She drew she um she liked looking at L poop and like breaking it open and like see what's going on.
SPEAKER_00It's like a classic Jurassic Park. Interesting, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_03But when I went to her house, her brothers were older. They were my age. Yeah, our age, right? They were because she was older than me. And they went to the he went to the bathroom and he called his brother in. He was like, Hey, you want to cross streams? He's like, No, I want a sword fight. I was like, Oh they were homeschooled. So they must have taught this a lot.
SPEAKER_00But that's just this movie's so powerful. Can I ask you a question? Before you got into that, whatever that story was. You said you and your brother, like, if you all have to go to the bathroom together, y'all, y'all would do that.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I mean, he would just he'd be like, I get I would be peeing, and then he'd be like, I gotta pee too. And he'd like push me over midstream, and then he would pee as well. And then so play Ghostbusters, you know. What the fuck is going on right now? But I never I never knew anybody, I've never heard of anybody doing that until I went to this girl's house, and her brothers did it too. I was like, I felt seen, you know what I mean?
SPEAKER_00I just don't know what I don't know who my podcast partner is. Hey, we learn a lot. We learn every day. I had a brother. Um, I've never seen his penis, I've never seen him pee.
SPEAKER_03No, you don't look at the penis, that makes you gay.
SPEAKER_00Okay. Um, so did your mother hate you guys for just constantly having to pee everywhere?
SPEAKER_03Well, we only did that at my dad's because he only had one bathroom and we had to share.
SPEAKER_00Gotcha. Gotcha. Now it's all making sense.
SPEAKER_03But yeah, probably she probably hated us.
SPEAKER_00That's hilarious.
SPEAKER_03Just let us know. You know, let us know if you guys yeah, let us know if you cross streams.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, if you and your boys just get together and pee together, man, that's wild. Legitimately never been in a bathroom peeing with another person.
SPEAKER_03The next time you're at a troll.
SPEAKER_00The same toilet. Exactly except for art.
SPEAKER_03Next time you're at a troll, elbow the guy next to you and be like, wanna cross streams?
SPEAKER_00Using Ghostbusters, you want to save New York? You want to blow up the planet? You want to get some marshmallows and have a wild night.
SPEAKER_03Well, Ghostbusters, baby. It
Why Ghostbusters Holds Up
SPEAKER_03was so good. I couldn't remember like I couldn't remember this movie because I only remembered the second one. Ah, I've never seen the second one.
SPEAKER_00Well, I have. I've seen parts, but I've never actually fully seen it.
SPEAKER_03So for the longest time, I always thought the second one was better. Yeah. Because I had seen it more often.
SPEAKER_00And I will say that most of the people don't have the same opinion. Well, they all think the first one's the best.
SPEAKER_03The first one is so good, but I hadn't seen it since I was like very small and could not remember.
SPEAKER_00Um So that's cute, that's interesting because when I was a kid, it like it hardly ever came on TV for some reason. Like I never really saw this until I don't know, I got older. And then I was like, oh, I can I have money to buy Ghostbusters and rent things. And that's how I first saw it. So I don't think I saw it until fully into like high school. And I'm like, man, I really wish I saw this as a kid. And every time I watch it, it gets better.
SPEAKER_01It's so good.
SPEAKER_00And it's wild how it's more of a action paranormal movie than an actual comedy. I mean, it is funny all the way through and it's very silly, but I'm just like, they kind of really nailed the three aspects of this movie, like the action, the paranormal, and the comedy. And it's like, this time I was watching, I wasn't laughing as much because I've seen it so much at this point. But I was just like, this is just a thoroughly good movie. Yeah, it really is. Except for all except like, you know.
SPEAKER_03And a lot of the comedy is so subtle, especially uh with Dan Aykroyd. Yeah. Like as being like the little boy with a new clubhouse. Yeah, he's so he plays it.
SPEAKER_00I think that's what really kills it. Except for Bill Murray, everybody plays it so straight. And I guess Bill Murray is playing it straight as a sarcastic guy, but it's like everybody else, nobody's really winking at the camera. And one of my um uh first questions I was gonna ask you who's your favorite actor from this movie, and why is it Rick Moranis?
SPEAKER_03Oh, he's so weird. I love him.
SPEAKER_00Constantly getting locked out of the house.
SPEAKER_03But it's like he waits outside of his apartment for her for Segordi Weaver to get there.
SPEAKER_00Seguridity Weaver is constantly being like uh followed around by nerds.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. And she will continue to be for the rest of her life after this. But also, I will say, um, I never like I because I didn't remember this movie growing up, I saw it so young, I never understood watching the alien movies why everyone thought Sigorny Weaver was so attractive and sexy.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Uh until yesterday.
SPEAKER_00I mean, which is weird because I mean she looks like the same in both. Except she's not trying to seduce you at one.
SPEAKER_03Well, she's got the big hair, she's got the perm. Yeah. Like she's possessed by a ghost, demon, she wants a Vinkman inside her.
SPEAKER_00I'm sorry, there's already enough people inside me. So good.
SPEAKER_03God, why are ghosts so horny?
SPEAKER_00I don't I don't know, but I watch a lot of ghost hunting shows, and they never seem to be horny in those.
SPEAKER_03And why didn't Ted Aykroyd say anything about this? Is it it's just like this is what comes with being mega popular and like an influencer, I guess. Just what? You just go with it. Yeah, you get a ghost blow and you just don't say anything about it.
SPEAKER_00Because then you have to capture it, yeah, and you won't get any more head from a ghost. Or you have it and then you can release it and be like, eh. Oh, then but then that's like a weird sex late situation.
SPEAKER_03That seems very contractual.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Like, I'll let you out.
SPEAKER_00But I mean, it is a ghost that can leave whenever it wants.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I mean, once it once he lets it out. Yeah, but then they're just gonna catch it again. Maybe. Or ghost can go wherever. Maybe you just don't tell anybody. You just keep going about business as usual, which is what happens. That is true. Unless he had like a trap in the bed with him. Yeah. He's just like, ha, gotcha.
SPEAKER_00It's like as soon as he's done, ha!
SPEAKER_03Um, and this is the first and then he gets covered in stay host.
SPEAKER_00This is actually the second movie where that I've ever watched where I saw a ghost give someone a blowjob. The first one being a scary movie.
SPEAKER_01Oh.
SPEAKER_00Because when it's like sees her face, puts the bag on her head. God. We should do that this year. I love the first scary movie. It's so bad and good all the time.
SPEAKER_03We should do a lot of spoofs.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Spoofs. Um, God, but like the cast of this movie is insane. I mean, just from like the top, I mean, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, and Sigourney Weaver and Rick Romanis. I mean, just absolutely perfect. I feel like Sigourney Weaver is very funny anytime she does anything comedy related, and it's wild how good of an actress she is.
SPEAKER_03And it's so good. It is really good. And sometimes you can see her with her interactions with Bill Murray in scenes where she shouldn't be laughing, but she is. Yeah. And it's adorable. Yeah, it's fantastic.
SPEAKER_00It's like, oh, she's believably following for this guy who will not leave her alone. Wonder why guys always like would never leave girls alone while growing up. You know, it might be because of the movies that are constantly coming out. All the like, you know, comedians that made movies. This is how it always went. Uh love Harold Ramis. So good in this movie. Yeah. R.I.P. Love that guy. Um, so uh while I was gonna ask, like, did I was gonna ask you if this was a big childhood movie, but I guess it's not. No, it wasn't. The second one was too. I actually literally don't even know what Ghostbusters 2 is about. You're insane. Never seen it.
SPEAKER_01You're crazy.
SPEAKER_00Never seen it. Um so is this like one of the most iconic movies of the 80s ever?
SPEAKER_03I mean, I saw Star Wars, it's gotta be this. I can see how it is now. Like, I I never understood it. Yeah, it's insane. But I do now.
SPEAKER_00Since we kind of came back to the 80s, like especially through the 2010s, and it's like everything was 80s, synth beat, like uh soundtracks, stranger things, kids dressed up as Ghostbusters.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_00But it's like Stephen King's stafe marshmallow man, just such a good idea. Always add a giant walking creature, and the cuter the better.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, like I never understood how until I watched it again recently. I never understood how he they imagined, I didn't even know that that it was all Ray's fault.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I never knew that they gave him a choice. Thought of the cutest possible thing. I know, like so that's uh that's actually gonna lead me to like one of my questions. If you had to think of your destructor, what would you think of? God.
SPEAKER_03Okay, if I was like, because I was I thought about this because I was thinking, if I was in Ray's position, I don't know, but like Dr. Venckman, if I was in his position, was like, clear your mind, don't think of anything. I would have immediately thought of a kitty cat or something. Something harmless.
SPEAKER_00Kitty cats aren't harmless. I know they got claws, especially like when they're kitty cats, they're they're bitey, they're they don't understand, they hurt yet.
SPEAKER_03And I've been and I've been reading recently Dungeon Crawler Carl. Have you heard of this? Princess Donut. Have you heard of this? Have you? Oh Jesus Christ. It's a classic J. God damn it, Donut. No, the it's so good. It's so good. And Princess Donut, the Queen Anne Chonk, is my favorite character.
SPEAKER_00Oh, yeah, yeah. I remember you telling me about this. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_03It's so good. Little cat that's like smarter than Dungeon Carl. She's smarter and stronger. And um she's the best.
SPEAKER_00It's because cats are the best. You listen to me, Snake. That's our dog's name. I decided that I was either gonna choose either a sheet or a pillow. Yes. But then I guess like, you know, a sheet could like wrap around their faces, but yeah, like a thin, very thin sheet. That's what I want to attack me. We just catch it on fire.
SPEAKER_03A sheet. Yeah, I guess that would be incredible. But I'm sure that Ray thought that Stephuff marshmallow man was pretty harmless.
SPEAKER_00I mean, if they had an I mean, really, if they just had a few people with some flamethrowers, I mean, it'd probably be all right. Well, I mean, laser guns do put out a lot of fire molten burning like marshmallows everywhere, which has got to be painful. Oh, and delicious. And they use like whipped uh not whipped cream, but shaving cream. Yeah, it looks like shaving cream. Like as a thing. And they were gonna put a whole bunch on them. And they're like, and I guess the prop person was like, hey, yeah, we got 75 pounds of um shaving cream we're gonna put on you guys each. And they're like, Oh, they're like, but that's gonna be really heavy, and they're like, no, no, it's shaving cream. And I think it was it was either Bill Murray or Harold Raymond's like, yeah, but 75 pounds of shaving cream is the same as 75 pounds of lead.
SPEAKER_01Anything else? Yeah.
SPEAKER_00So they they tried to put it on um, they're like, all right, well, we'll show you how easy this is gonna be. And they put 75 pounds on a how do you administer 75 pounds of shaving cream? I don't I don't know, I have no idea. So they put it on a stunt actor, and uh he immediately got flattened, and they're like, All right, never mind.
SPEAKER_03So what do they use instead?
SPEAKER_00No, they use the shaving cream, just not nearly as much. And I'm like, what are you talking about?
SPEAKER_03Spread it around a little bit.
SPEAKER_00And Bill Murray was like, I don't want that on me. And that's why he doesn't have any on him. Oh that's so funny. Yeah, Bill Murray is notorious for being someone who He's just been a dick forever. Yes, but he's a lovable dick. He's so he's definitely not dickless. Never meet your hero, I guess. Is it true? Yes, he is dickless.
SPEAKER_03It's covered in shaving cream, don't you?
SPEAKER_00I mean, literally the funniest, the two funniest lines come from that scene of that movie: the cats, dogs living at each other. It'll be hysteria. Um and then, like, is it true? It's like, yes, he he has no dick. Like the two biggest laughs are in that movie. I love
Wild Trivia And Improvised Lines
SPEAKER_00it. Um, so in the middle of the film's initial release, to keep interest going, Ivan Reitman ran a trailer that was basically the commercial of the ghostbusters used in the movie, but the five five five number was placed with a one-eight hundred number, allowing people to actually call in. What? Callers got a recorded message of Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd saying something to the effect of, hi, we're out catching ghosts right now. They got a thousand calls per hour, twenty-four hours a day for several weeks. That's love. Incredible shit. I remember the dark knight did that, and you could call and the joker would say something. Did you ever so they called it and I don't remember what they said.
SPEAKER_03I didn't know that was a thing. That's that's great. So um I remember growing up, the Nickelodeon had a telethon going on where you can call in and pledge hours to work for your community. Yeah. And I called in a bunch of times. Because every time you called in, it would give a voice of a character depending on how much you donated to gift. And it was like Doug. Yeah. Or hey Arnold, or like oh that pledge was so stupid.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Kids, hey kids, call this number and pledge us some stuff you're never gonna do.
SPEAKER_00You're never gonna do, and you won't remember as soon as you hang up the phone line. Wow, that's wild.
SPEAKER_01Oh that's that's a that's incredible.
SPEAKER_00So um uh almost none of the scenes were filmed as scripted as the actors kept improvising at least one line. Bill Murray made most of his ad lib, or made most of the ad libs. And when Vinkman mentions the time Spengler tried to drill a hole in his head, Spingler's response, that would have worked if you hadn't stopped me, was actually ad-lib by Harold Raymond.
SPEAKER_03He's trying to give himself a lobotomy. Yeah, I don't know.
SPEAKER_00So he wouldn't be so smart anymore. I think he was maybe making himself a frankincent.
SPEAKER_03That's a monster. Because that's so in his character.
SPEAKER_00It's like just make a little 30 minutes short of that situation.
SPEAKER_03He was a mad scientist, but he wasn't willing to uh adversely to Dr. Pinkman or Venkman. He was not willing to uh practice on unwilling subjects. Yeah, I mean, so the scene where he's the the opening scene. Yeah, the very beginning, yeah. That is no one would allow that ever. Oh, what are you talking about? Shock because we've done this before. We learn from our mistakes. You can't shock your patients. Um can't remember. Even if they say it's cool, you can't do it. They're in that figuring it out. The Nazis did a lot of this. We like we learned a lot from the Nazis. Thanks, guys. You were horrible, but like that's why we don't do this anymore. Even because there was this famous experiment where they it was fake, it was all fake, where there was a subject in a room, and the scient the people um administering the questions were supposed to be pressing the button to administer the charge. You know what I'm talking about? Yes, I do know this.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and the people got very greedy with it immediately. Yeah, yeah. Or like as they were like screaming for them to stop, they wouldn't keep they wouldn't stop because they're like because the this is part of it.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, the people asking the questions, you're like, please continue, please continue all the time. Yeah, they didn't say anything else, and the people were like, Okay, yeah, just keep shocking this guy to death. But you know, he wasn't being shocked, but they thought he was, yeah, and they had PTSD from that. This guy should never have been allowed in science ever.
SPEAKER_00Definitely not, and also dating students from the school.
SPEAKER_03Oh, that never happened.
SPEAKER_00No, and I'm sure it still doesn't happen.
SPEAKER_03One of my cousins got uh impregnated by her professor.
SPEAKER_01Wow.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Ghostbusters!
SPEAKER_03Oh, speaking of the soundtrack, is it all original songs? Because they're all horrible except for the main one.
SPEAKER_00Um honestly, I didn't even I didn't even think about it.
SPEAKER_03I think they are.
SPEAKER_00I mean, I don't know. It didn't pop up. I mean, all I know is that the main song is.
SPEAKER_03I bet the whole soundtrack is because Well, I mean, if it's just like the movie score, then yeah. Well, it's yeah, the movie score, but like in the second one, they use actual songs made by talented artists.
SPEAKER_00Oh and like you've never heard them before.
SPEAKER_03Oh no, no, no, you have. Oh, you just mean it in like this one. In this one, it's all it was all I think I feel like it was all just made for the movie. Because there's a song about riding out and saving people from ghosts.
SPEAKER_00There's a movie or there's a song about um Yeah, they're all yeah, so like the iconic title track and several other songs were specifically written and recorded for the 1984 movie. Um Huh. Yeah, saving the day.
SPEAKER_03Saving the day.
SPEAKER_00Cleaning up the town and magic. That's the song that played while wow. I never even noticed it. Honestly, that says a lot to like what you're saying because I didn't even realize there's other songs in this movie.
SPEAKER_03Is that right? You never realized that.
SPEAKER_00Or maybe that's how good the only good song is.
SPEAKER_03Only good song It makes you forget about all the other bad ones.
SPEAKER_00I have no idea what any of the other songs sound like, and I just watched it an hour ago.
SPEAKER_03I feel like that's also a credit to how good the movie is. Yeah. Because you don't even think about it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it's just because you're seeing the spectacle of it all. It's
Effects That Still Look Great
SPEAKER_00so cool. I guess we should talk about the uh effects. I mean, how good are the effects in this movie? And like I know it has that it's just like the the vibe of old 80s like special effects is just fantastic. It really is. Love the little beam, Slimer. My boy Slimer looking gross as fuck, and I love it. Ugh.
SPEAKER_03What are the Up with the idea for these ghosts.
SPEAKER_00I don't know. You know, I know that like Dan Aykroyd is a big ghost boy. Really? He's a big paranormal guy. Yeah, like he loves paranormal stuff. I think it's like his whole family history is about it and stuff like that. Like he wanted like a way more in-depth and like crazy like movie. Like he wanted like a $200 million budget for his original Ghostbusters. Like he's they're gonna be traveling in different times and stuff like that. And uh I think it was either Ivan Reitman and Harold Ramis. I think we're like, whoa, calm down there, big boy.
SPEAKER_03Slap him in the face or like get it together.
SPEAKER_00How about we make a Ghostbuster and put it in New York? Probably a better idea. So uh Harold Ramis only intended to write the film. He decided to play Egon Spingler after he felt he was the best person suited for the role.
SPEAKER_03Oh, narcissus.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and absolutely critically, because he's the best person. He's so good. Yeah. Uh Sigorney Weaver recalled, I once had a fire in my apartment after the movie, and the fireman came to put it out. One of them opened up my refrigerator and said, Whoa, you better call a Ghostbusters. Ah so like this movie like was obsessed over. Yes. Like in New York specifically. Like people would yell at the actors and stuff when they saw them all about Ghostbusters. That's incredible. So the character of Winston was meant to have joined the team much earlier and would have been slimed at the hotel when Eddie Murphy spit on my computer. Uh when Eddie Murphy declined the role, the script was rewritten to have Winston appear about halfway through the film. Um and uh yeah, so the guy that ended up playing uh Winston, Ernie Hudson. So yeah, it was they wanted that it to be Eddie Murphy because they're all friends with Eddie Murphy and stuff like that. And so when they did not, he said he wouldn't do it, they're like, shit. Uh-oh. Let's get someone handsomer. And apparently Ernie Hudson was like, Yeah, you know, I love Ghostbusters, I love everything about it, and I was so excited to be a part of it, and I love how much joy it's brought me in my life. But it's really a bummer when I saw the script and I was in it so much, and then all of a sudden I get a new script and I'm barely in it and not doing a lot. So he apparently he has like a love-hate relationship to the movie because he was expecting a lot more and then they kind of took it all out.
SPEAKER_03I guess he added he was so good.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I mean he is great in it. He he really adds a lot of gravitas as like a you know, because he's kind of us. Like he's the um He's the blue collar guy in the movie. He feels like he's supposed to be the audience's perspective almost. Like if the audience was there, they would be this guy who's like, Whoa, what the hell? I'm just here for a paycheck. Yeah. But apparently he, when it was Eddie Murphy, he's supposed to be like a part of the Air Force and stuff like that, and he's just like really blue-collar. And um, as much as I like Ernie Hudson in it, I would have also really loved to see Eddie Murphy.
SPEAKER_03That would have been really funny. Yeah. But I did oh, I love Ernie, I love Ernie. Yeah, and his his role in this movie. Like he's so charismatic.
SPEAKER_00When someone asks you if you're a god, say yes. Yeah, man. I love this city. I could just see Eddie Murphy saying that as well.
SPEAKER_03And he's so much more um, I don't know how to say it. Like his his cur his charisma is so different. Different, but it's present. So much more present than any other character in the movie.
SPEAKER_00And yeah, it's such a bummer he doesn't. He doesn't get roped in with the rest of them. Because like he's not bad in the movie. It's just like it's just whenever you think of Ghostbusters, you think of three white guys.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, but like I think.
SPEAKER_00Even when you see like toys of it and everything, and it's like, hey, you know, there's a fourth Ghostbuster, I guess.
SPEAKER_03And even a fifth. Yeah, the second one.
SPEAKER_00Oh, there's a fifth one? It's a fifth one. Oh, you don't even know. I guess I'll just have to put on Ghostbusters too after this haul. So, uh a little bit about what I said, like people being obsessed in New York City about this film. So after the film's release, William Atherton became revile uh reviled. He's the uh EPA guy. Yeah. Uh when he was running into director Ivan Reidman one day, he was furious and upset about how people treated him. He told him that he couldn't even go into a bar without people wanting to pick a fight with him. In another incident, Atherton was walking down a stretch of 7th Avenue in New York City, which was entirely crowded with school buses, when he heard a lot of children shouting at the top of their lines, Hey Dickless!
SPEAKER_01That's New York, baby.
SPEAKER_00I love this city. They take everything too serious. Just kidding. So after Harold Ramis died on February 24th, 2014, fans of the movie paid tribute to him by visiting the New York City firehouse used in the exterior shots and created a makeshift memorial feature featuring Nestle's Nestle's crunch bars, uh the cr candy bar they gives uh Vinkman. Uh Twinkies, in a reference to you know, the Twinkie situation, and uh collections of spores, molds, and fungi.
SPEAKER_03Do they have a ghost trap right there at the casket just in case?
Sequels Reboots And Comedy Changes
SPEAKER_03I wish. Did you watch the remake? Or not the remake, but the legacy sequel.
SPEAKER_00No, I haven't seen any of them. Those uh well, I saw the There's two, right? Yeah, I saw the first one, and it is fine. I will never watch it again, but I also cried at the end. So it's a very manipulative movie, especially towards people who love Harold Ramis. Yeah. Um, I mean, I it's like a like they didn't really, I don't feel like they fully earned it in the movie, but you know, just seeing one of your f favorite actors come back in a movie that is no longer living, it is uh spoilers, sorry, uh very touching and sad. Oh, I've avoided it because I'm I'm so afraid. It's also just like not that great. It's just Yeah, that's what I also thought. Maybe they're never gonna make another good ghost bush, and they should have quit now. Uh I mean the the the like all female one, actually, very funny. That's the one I was I thought you were talking about. No, I'm talking about the other one with like Wolf Hard. No, that's uh there's so there's three. Yes. There was the first attempt, which was the all-girl one, and then there was the Paul Rudd and Finn Wolf Hard. I don't know. Paul Rudd was a good one. Yeah, and I was talking about the Paul Rudd and Finn Wolf Hard one. Okay. Um, but the girl one, you know, which everybody hated because girls can't catch ghosts. Everybody knows that. The menstruation.
SPEAKER_03It'll attract bears.
SPEAKER_00Bear ghosts. But like, which is a really funny movie because obviously it has like the funniest female actresses in it. But um it is a completely it's not, it doesn't really feel like Ghostbusters because they had to modernize it and make it too big. Because it's very much of the comedy of the like the women, like uh, you know, like Bridesmaids, where it's a joke every five seconds, versus the original Ghostbusters. If you watch it, it's very small jokes, it's very subtle. And it's very much like uh jokes that don't up in the movie. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Um, which is kind of like all for example when Segourney Weaver comes. Well, I guess there's like Ray, Ego, Ego, like they're all in the room is before Winston got there, and Segourney Weaver comes in. I can't remember where they are, but like Ego is sitting, they're on a love seat. It's got three seats, and Ego and is sitting on the end, and then right in the middle is Ray.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Like there's a whole other seat, and there's three other couches.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Like he's sitting right next to Yeah. I thought that was the funniest shit.
SPEAKER_00It's so good. You would never do that. Versus like making that now, you have to like have a five-minute explanation about why it's funny in the movie itself, and it's like we don't need it. It's like it can just be funny. But I really did actually like the I liked it and probably won't ever watch it again, but I did actually enjoy the female sisters. That's amazing. Just because I like all those actresses, they're so funny. I love it. Yeah, they really are. Um so uh the schedule for getting the movie into theaters for its release uh date in the summer of 1984 was so tight. Director Ivan Ryman said that the final print included incomplete special effects shots and eras like visible wires, but remarkably, people didn't care.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. This is hilarious.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and funny. It's just too funny, and it looks dope as hell. Um on the set, Dan Aykroyd referred to the Slimer ghost as the ghost of John Belushi. Nice Slimer's gluttonous eating was based on Belushi's cafeteria scene in National Lampoon's Animal House. What? Yeah. That's incredible. Um, and so a little bit about uh Ray Parker Jr. creating the song. According to an interview with Mix Magazine Online, Ray Parker Jr. tried to create a song for the movie for two days. At 4:30 a.m., he saw a commercial for a drink company that reminded him of a scene from the film. That commercial helped him coin the popular line. Who are you gonna call? And so the lively chorus shouting Ghostbusters in the film's theme song considered Ray Parker's girlfriend and her friends the only people Parker could find quickly enough to meet his deadline. That's awesome. In a 2015 interview, he said he got the idea when his son shouted Ghostbusters. He didn't like the film's title very much and was trying to find a way to avoid saying it himself in the song. But then he was like the found the call situation from the commercial, and I was like, ah, this will work. That's great. Um yeah, and that's pretty much uh, and this was the highest grossing comedy of all time until Home Alone. Wow. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Um yeah. So I think Upended by a Child.
SPEAKER_00Upended by a child, a murderous child.
SPEAKER_03From the good son. Yeah. Wait a lot. Yeah, it was definitely after. I feel like that is like a spiritual sequel to him alone. Yeah. He went through all the trauma. It's like and then this is what the PTSD version of Macaulay Culkin is. He finally got a younger sister and murdered her immediately.
SPEAKER_00Right, and the good son. Is that the one with Elijah Wood in it? Yeah. Or is that the bad scene? No, that's the good son. I think it's Elijah Wood. Yeah, it's definitely Elijah Wood with Macaulay Culkin. Yeah, Macaulay Culkin is a dick. Yeah. He's the worst kid. I watched it once when I was younger, and it stressed me out so much that I was like, I can never watch this again. And I still have yet to watch it again.
SPEAKER_03It's still pretty good.
SPEAKER_00Just like, uh, I just hate when other I hate movies when they have like two people and one person keeps getting in trouble when it's not their fault. Yeah. That shit stresses me out so much in movies.
SPEAKER_03Because it happens so much growing up.
SPEAKER_00And it's just like, as a defenseless kid, there's nothing you can do. Yeah, dude.
SPEAKER_03And I absolutely hate it. It's terrifying. He's such a little shit. Yeah, yeah. And it made the things that I did like growing up seem like harmless, like Halloween.
SPEAKER_00When you look to your mom and be like, see, I'm not that bad now. Yeah, mom. Yeah, which thing about that. Or dad who lets me pee with my brother in the bathroom. She didn't know. It's a secret.
Fan Mail Ask And A Bad Review
SPEAKER_00All right, Jason. We're gonna hop into the plot. But before we do that, we have some things we have to discuss. First, we're gonna at the end we discuss the point of Ghostbusters. Uh, not much of a point except for Ghost be busting, baby. Um, but if you have any idea what the point of the plot of the movie Ghostbusters is, send us some fan mail through our link at the top of the description that you can click and text us straight from your phone. If you're not able to do that, or if it's not available and whatever you're listening to, you can go to the very bottom where we have our uh email in the description. It's we recommend mailbag at gmail.com. So send us some goddamn emails and link or messages. Or we'll haunt you forever. But we have to discuss a review. Oh boy. So uh some old person in their sixties. Is it our first good one? No, we have good ones. But this is our first one in a while. Oh boy, does this guy not like us? Uh um, I guess he was having a bad day. Well, he gave us two stars. He doesn't say anything nice about us, but he gave us two stars for some reason, I guess.
SPEAKER_01Which is bad. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Um so this you hate us. The title is typical Gen Z content, immediately wrong. Because we're millennials. I'm Gen X. We're millennials. I think you're technically a millennial.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Technically.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. So uh I'm kind of in between. Immediately wrong. And you know, we we appreciate the feedback. Uh we like seriously, if you leave us batteries, just try to give us five stars anyways. Just you know, why the fuck not? It doesn't matter. Uh we're the tiny we're tiny ass podcasts with like very little reviews. Why would you want to leave a bad review? It's kind of a crazy situation here.
SPEAKER_03Um It's like leaving a bad review at a funeral. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And if you do have issues with our podcast, I understand. And if you don't like the podcast, be more constructive than what this guy's about to say. So, as someone who's in their 60s, it's rare that I find a podcast done by anyone younger than 40 that I can remotely relate to. It happens, but not that often. This was not an exception. Sounds like at least 200 or more podcasts that are all the same, couple of 25 to 37 year olds, overcomplicating what a movie should or shouldn't be, not knowing how to just sit back and be entertained unless it's something made by someone the media told them to idolize. Where the what what episode did he listen to to come up with that conclusion?
SPEAKER_03And what would that sound here? I'm gonna give it a uh this is what that would sound like. Hey, did you see that movie? Yeah, it was cool.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_03End of podcasts. Yeah, I know.
SPEAKER_00It's like, first of all, I know exactly how to be to sit back and be entertained by a movie. Literally done in all my life.
SPEAKER_03I did it yesterday.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Um and yeah, we're just talking about the movie. I don't know what you want from your movie podcast. It's like if we're gonna, if I if you click on a podcast called We Recommend a Movie Podcast, and you see a title of a movie you want to hear people talk about, what are they supposed to talk about if you don't want them to talk about it?
SPEAKER_03Just go, mm-hmm, mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_00And it's like, have you listened to 200 movie podcasts? There's so many other podcasts you can also listen to.
SPEAKER_03There's millions.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_03It must be a Konosua.
SPEAKER_00So yeah, I guess our problem is is we just talked about a movie too much. My biggest issue is uh something uh unless it's something made by someone the media told them to idolize.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00That's the one where I'm like, what the fuck are you talking about? We have not done a Scorsese movie or anything. We've only done like the Kill Bill from Tarantino. We've only done one movie by Nolan. We've done so many other movies. And it's like the people that are idolized the most, we haven't even done like a lot of the movies, only like one Spielberg. So I'm like, and I don't idolize people. I actually hate most celebrities a little bit. Well, I mean, I will say when I was in like my 20s and stuff, like, yeah, you know, like I'd become obsessed with an actor or an actress or something for a little bit, but it's like I actually was more like the only time I really well, yeah, I guess Ryan Gosling. I did dress up as him for Halloween once.
SPEAKER_02That's awesome.
SPEAKER_00But it's not like I just spent all my life just like, oh, I love these people. So um, yeah, if you do leave us bad reviews, just leave us at like what you actually don't like about that we're doing constructive instead of just like making wide accusations about who we are as people, with I'm assuming listening to maybe 30 minutes of a podcast.
SPEAKER_03I'm sure it'll never happen again.
SPEAKER_00No, it won't. But um, guy that left a review. I'm sorry you didn't like us. But thanks for the two stars instead of the one stars. Appreciate it. Um, you know, find some happiness, man. You didn't have to leave a bad review on a tiny podcast. There's like so much stuff to do in the world. And you know, what kind of kills me is like I just hate how like people just can't sit back and just listen to a podcast and be entertained. Instead, they have to be snooty about it. Turned it back on, you bitch. Just kidding. No, I honestly like when I first saw it, I was like, ooh, a bad review. I kind of can't wait to read it. And then when I read it and I was like, the whole like ending part, I was like, I was fine with everything until that part. It's like, what are you talking about? People are so unhappy.
SPEAKER_01Thanks, bro.
SPEAKER_00But I'm very happy that it did not hurt me as much as I was expecting our first bad review to hurt me. So it's okay. It's like I barely thought about it. Um, after the first five minutes of being like, We're so callous now.
SPEAKER_03Look at us.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I mean, it's just because ultimately it doesn't matter.
SPEAKER_03We've grown so much.
SPEAKER_00It's just like we're either gonna get a bunch of people to listen to us or we're not, and eventually we'll end it or we won't ever end it, and we'll just die doing the podcast.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Long after we're all dead, we're dead, aliens will listen to this podcast and maybe create a whole religion around it. Because it will be the last surviving podcast ever.
SPEAKER_00God, I just hope it happens before I die. I want a lot of that like praise before I die.
SPEAKER_03Nobody ever gets praise when they die. It's long after. Just you know that's true. All the true artists.
Plot Setup And Starting The Business
SPEAKER_00So, Jason, Ghostbusters 1984. I was born that year. Yeah. He did it. He born.
SPEAKER_03So my mother said I split her from F to stern.
SPEAKER_00Yes. And I looked like Slimer.
SPEAKER_03Oh, yeah, but I did.
SPEAKER_00Just as ectoplasmic. Really? Oh, that's so sweet. I wonder what I look like as a little baby.
SPEAKER_03Probably also.
SPEAKER_00I should ask my mom if I was a cute baby or if I was just really gross looking.
SPEAKER_03I mean, all babies are cute, but like long after the birthday.
SPEAKER_00I got one baby picture that I've seen, and it wasn't like newborn baby picture, but I was like, damn.
SPEAKER_03Were your eyes like glowing red?
SPEAKER_00No, I was just like a handsome looking little baby. That wasn't like newborn baby. Did you know?
SPEAKER_03Did your parents have like the pic the naked photos of you with the little b basin of water?
SPEAKER_00I mean, like this little steel like bucket.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00I don't think there I don't think there was any water in it, but I was definitely in the water.
SPEAKER_03Well, I mean that you can assume that that's where you would put water drown, said baby.
SPEAKER_00In my mom's living room. It's literally hanging up. Yeah. Yeah. Aww. Must have been very popular in the 90s. It was. Yeah. Yeah. Drown your baby. Here's like a 15-year-old and your mom's like, get in the water.
SPEAKER_03It's like, I could drown it, but I won't, because it's so cute. Because he's smiling.
SPEAKER_00If he's crying and being a little brat about this, I'd have to.
SPEAKER_03That's why we made his boots bronze, the sink him in the lake.
SPEAKER_00And then I come back as a ghost. So the film opens within the New York public library where a librarian is first gathering books before heading downstairs to a remote empty section. She places a book back on the shelf, not noticing that the books behind her are left. Later, she passes a card catalog shelves as they open behind her and suddenly begins to hurl their contents into the air. Frightened and screaming, she runs to the room before being stopped by an unseen ghost, which scares her table terribly.
SPEAKER_01Ghostbusters!
SPEAKER_03Title screen. Uh never wanted to burn books, but uh that was her, I'll probably burn this place down. I would have burned the whole buttons.
SPEAKER_00It's wild how much ghosts are just little shit. They're always opening shit, throwing stuff on the ground. And it's like, hey ghosts, stop.
SPEAKER_03They're like cats.
SPEAKER_00Why you ghosts always so mean? It's just like I I think it's just one of those situations where you become a ghost, you're like, I have no responsibility. I can ruin everything.
SPEAKER_03Exactly. You're right.
SPEAKER_00I'm gonna completely empty a person's cupboards.
SPEAKER_03Cats are poltergeists.
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_03Last night, my cat, somebody left out a whole glass of water filled to the brim.
SPEAKER_00Wow, that seems like a bad idea.
SPEAKER_03It was because the cat knocked it off and spilled it all over the place. Didn't even drink it, did it? Did it break the glass? Maybe. No, the glass was fine.
SPEAKER_01Thank God.
SPEAKER_00What does that mean? Bad for the cat. Catbusters. Cat busters. So after the opening title show, the film continues in the Paranormal Studies Department of Columbia University, where Dr. Peter Vinkman is conducting a test on ESP with a nerdy male student and an attractive female student. Bigman continuously flirts and lies about her abilities while enjoying administrating electrical shots to the male students. Who like actually gets one of them right and it's still funny? It's like maybe he was ESP and they just completely No.
SPEAKER_03No, I think if you um there's odds. Like if you were to get a whole deck of cards.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, but the three wiggly lines.
SPEAKER_03Oh, yeah. And if you don't know what's on those cards, I mean that's they look like regular playing cards. Yeah. So yeah, this guy was probably like the real deal. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00But he eventually has enough. The male student leaves, and Venckman continues to flirt with a young woman, but then Dr. Ray Stance enters and friendly begins to tell Vinkman about a sighting at a library, insisting to leave once to check it out. Um and then Vinkman makes a date with a student and we'll never see her again.
SPEAKER_03Because she's now buried under the fire.
SPEAKER_00Because she is not Sikorny Weaver.
SPEAKER_03No, she's dead.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, she's dead. He murdered her. Upon arriving at the library, Wingman and Stance meet up with Dr. Egon Spengler, and Vingman proceeds to ask a series of personal and kind of cynical questions uh about her medical and social history. Are you misstrading right now? Oh, that's why that's why girls see ghosts because administration.
SPEAKER_03Honestly, if we We had menstrual pain. Yeah. I feel like we'd there would be a whole like social system of pain relief for us. But like there's nothing.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, there'll be like shots to have. Like you can get like once a year that would completely take away the pain or something like that.
SPEAKER_03Completely disregard all pain that necessary. But you know, but because it's a woman. Uh also if if if I said I wasn't feeling pain all the time and everyone told me I was lying, I would just eventually probably say it was ghosts. Sorry guys. Jason's a little woke today. I did have three cups of coffee this morning.
SPEAKER_00No, I just uh I woke up and I like open Facebook and just saw a bunch of people complaining about the Odyssey because it's too woke and so I just when you said that I just I'm just like I might as well I might as well get on board and just call everybody woke too.
unknownNo.
SPEAKER_00So the three head down to the area where the ghost is supposedly inhabited while down there the three men collect ectoplasm residue, discover a tall symmetrical stacking of books from the floor to ceiling. You're right, no human books, but no human beings could stack books like this. What? And then they uh narrowly escaped a falling bookcase. Uh this happened to you before? First time. Um and yeah, this is where I put ghosts are such shitheads. Let me just let me just ruin everything around.
SPEAKER_03Let's just screw up the Dewey Decimal system, which is the worst possible thing you could do to a librarian.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and you know what? I love the Dewey Decimal system. I loved it. As a kid, I loved it, and as an adult, I still love the Dewey Decimal system. And you know, people were like, oh, when I was growing up, people were like, this is too hard to remember. And I was like, what the fuck are we talking about? Look at some numbers and go get the book. What are the numbers based on? Numbers. How good the books are? No, just where they're at. I don't know. Does it go deeper?
SPEAKER_03I don't know.
SPEAKER_00Is it a conspiracy, Jesse? I'll go on TikTok and see if there's a Dewey Decimal conspiracy. I bet there is. God dang Obama created it. So turning the same corner as the library, and they see the ghost, a transparent form of an elderly lady reading a book. Wingman asks what they should do, and then gets mad when the others have no idea. It's like, so what do we do? And he's like, I'll don't fucking have an idea what we're supposed to do here. It's like y'all staying here. Um, so having no idea what to do, Wingman begins to talk to the ghost because he was a lady at the bar, you know. It's like, hey girl, what's your name? Where are you from? What do you do around here? She shushes him and then, like, before Stanford claims he knows what to do. I love when he gets shut uh shushed. He's like, Well, that works every time. It's like no one can ever like turn down my charms.
SPEAKER_03She's right. It is a library.
SPEAKER_00It is a library. So this uh they stealthily approach the ghost before Ray yells, get her.
SPEAKER_01It's like, what are you talking about?
SPEAKER_00And the ghost mutates into a ghoulish skeletal apparation, apparition, scaring the hell out of the trio who run screaming from the library, they ignore the administrator in their frantic way out. It's like, hey, running out after him. It's like, well, talk to you later.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. And then this library ghost, never seen again. Never seen they did.
SPEAKER_00I assume they went back to the life. Yeah, yeah, probably. If they paid them.
SPEAKER_03If it was still a problem. Yeah. I mean, what section of the library was she looking at?
SPEAKER_00Was it self-help? It seems like you know, in Harry Potter, as they have like the uh the uh books that you're not allowed to look at. But yeah, then it's pretty easy also at the same time for just anybody to walk in there and get those books. Yeah. Um it's like that situation. Oh, okay. Yeah. So these are like the books that like hope you learn. Uh like necromancy, like how to raise yourself back from the vodka cadava, that's where the that's where it comes from, is from this library.
SPEAKER_03So this is where Donnie Darko originated.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, this is where you learn about time holes. I love a good time hole. So after they've calmed down a bit, they walk back to the university. Vinkman mocks Ray's idiotic plan, and Egon announces that based on his readings, they now have a good chance of actually catching a ghost and holding it indefinitely. However, once they get back to the school, they may meet the dean who tells them they that their grant has been terminated due to their shoddy and highly suspect findings, research, and methods. Love a good snooty dean.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, no, he was well within his right.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I mean, big men along with the stuff.
SPEAKER_03Experiments running. We're so unethical.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. That's the thing. All like the uh authorities in this movie kind of, you know, they kind of have good, good, you know, like good reason to do everything that's I mean, they have guns that can explode a place, and the EPA is like, you shouldn't have those. And they're like, ah, you're the bad guy.
SPEAKER_03Maybe you shouldn't have nuclear weapons. Yes. Uh they this seemed to be problematic.
SPEAKER_00I mean, all you had to do is show this EPA guy a ghost, and he'd be like, ah. Immediately you've been fine. Yeah. He'd be like, you know what? Absolutely respect you guys. Uh keep doing, keep keep up with what you're doing.
SPEAKER_03Maybe I love the in every like I don't know. There's they always stick a colander, you know, like the straining thing on someone's head with wires attached. Yeah. And like, that's the thing. Just show them that. Yeah. And show them your results. I don't know. Maybe it's like whenever they're like, it's like, because they have Lewis there.
SPEAKER_00There, you know, they have Lewis there and they do like a reading and it shows like uh one of the dogs, and it's just like, show them that. Yeah. Anyways, we'll get there soon. So uh Peter and Ray sit drinking on campus, and Ray mofs about their bleak prospects before Peter suggests this turn of events happened so that they could go into business for themselves as the world's first firm for paranormal investigations and eliminations. Because they're kind of talking about um, it's like, oh, you know, they gave us funding and like money and stuff, and then like I can't remember who's a crazy asshole. He says it's like now in the real world, the private sector, like people expect results. Um, so Peter convinces Ray to take out a mortgage on his childhood home and use it for startup capital, even though the interest is really high, like $95,000. Noise. Um, Bingman is just uh thinking of himself and franchising rights. Uh the trio checks out an empty firehouse to use his headquarters, and while Egon uh talks about the many problems of the building itself, Ray is beside himself with excitement at the prospect of living and working there, especially with the antique pole used for firefighters of the past to exit the top floor rapidly. I think we'll take it.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I'm on Ray's side. Yeah, but also fuck you, Ray. Ego was trying to lowball her.
SPEAKER_00I know that's he completely messed it up.
SPEAKER_03I will see it. Bankman? Come on, man. Yeah. You can see like social cues, right? Yeah, I know.
SPEAKER_00I you ever went down a fireman's pool? I have not. Me neither, but we had something similar at a on our playground in elementary school. All the fucking kids love to use it, baby, because it's so fun. Wish we had a longer one like they do in Firefighter World.
SPEAKER_03Wait, what? There's a firefighter world. No, but uh, you know, firefighter buildings, I just said world because I am now imagining a whole theme park dedicated to firefighter world, and that sounds really fun. Wouldn't it be hot?
SPEAKER_00Wouldn't be a bad idea.
SPEAKER_03That sounds really cool. It it would be a great idea. And then we teach kids about fire safety. Yeah. And have fun.
SPEAKER_00And then like you create little mini fires, let them like spray stuff on them.
SPEAKER_03Let them get out their teenage angst with fireworks and fire.
SPEAKER_00Because you know who needed that? Um the maid in the hotel earlier when there's a fire and she's spraying a tiny water bottle on it. And it's like, no, you put it out, it's not working. She was using different methods. Well, it's because all she had is a little squirt bottle, so she's spurting it.
SPEAKER_03Is it a lot of the plants? I don't know. She definitely knew there was a fire extinguisher available somewhere, and she's like, I'm just gonna keep spraying it. Is this city so wild? Is this the Wild West New York we're talking about?
SPEAKER_00Well, they actually um along with Saturday Night Live and Ghostbusters, like those are some of the because at this time, like New York wasn't was kind of looked down on a little bit because you know there's a lot of like trash everywhere. And like, you know, there was so much like just wasn't like the most fun place to live as like now everybody loves New York. Yeah, and the teenage meeting and ninja turtles live there. But like Saturday Night Live and like Ghostbusters really helped like pump up the image of New York and then it kind of leads to how it is now. I could I could see that there were a lot of movies about New York City Pride in the 80s, yeah, and versus like you know, like all the Martin Scorsese movies from like the 70s and stuff, uh made a macroes and it's like shit. I mean, then even if you like watch the Joker, like the movie The Joker, it's like there's trash everywhere, even though that's supposed to be Gotham, but it's essentially just New York City. Um back then. So yeah, that's kind of that's interesting, you know, like Crook Cops and shit like that.
SPEAKER_03Um there's never been a crooked cop.
SPEAKER_00Uh as far as I know, I think they're all great. Never a bad one. Oh, I love this new character I'm doing. Like just anti-woke Jesse.
Dana Meets Zool And Chaos Begins
SPEAKER_00So at 55 Central Park West, classical musician Dana Barrett arrives home with groceries. Her neighbor and accountant, Louise Tole, stops her in a hallway. Or and yeah, he's just an accountant, not her accountant. Stops her in the hallway, telling her that her television has been left on. Lewis badges her about an upcoming party he's hosting, and Dana finally brushes him away and enters her apartment.
SPEAKER_03He's like, I tried to sneak in. Yeah, I tried to get to break in.
SPEAKER_00I went on the ledge to try to get inside. So instead, I just turned up my TV. So everybody thought it was me.
SPEAKER_03Yes, and he means well.
SPEAKER_00Creepy as hell. I don't know. I wouldn't want to be left alone on the weaver. But he's always waiting. No, I mean, let's be real, Sigorni Weaver could pick him up and throw him out the window easily.
SPEAKER_03And she should have.
SPEAKER_00Um and so we see the Ghostbusters now have a commercial. Um, as she is putting away her groceries, she noticed that her eggs are now leaping out of their shelves and cooking themselves on the countertops. That's right. So good. And then uh, you know, a very classic thing happens. Every time I get up to try to get something in the refrigerator, I obviously see uh that there's a otherworldly temple and a dog-like creature that grows the word Zool.
SPEAKER_02Zool!
SPEAKER_00You know? Like that's why you gotta make sure you throw out your leftovers. Yeah, they get nasty. And uh Zool is voiced by Ivan Reitman, the director. Uh, before Dana Dana frantically slams the door shut. Man, I just I hate when it happens, you know.
SPEAKER_03Trying to say something and they just shut the door. Yeah, shut the door.
SPEAKER_00It's like fuck. This has happened to me so many times.
SPEAKER_03She wasn't like, I want to pet that dog. I know.
SPEAKER_00And like, as scary as it is, like, is there no like part of you that kind of wants to like reopen and peek through just to see like what the hell is? You still there?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, like you you need some?
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I I would probably just do that. I will say they do not make refrigerators like they used to.
unknownOh.
SPEAKER_00It's like you could literally have your refrigerator possessed and it still works. Now appliances, you got five years or like six years with a max.
SPEAKER_03Indiana Jones, like you get into that thing, you survive a nuclear blast.
SPEAKER_00The red line refrigerators. Yeah. Because I think that was actually the reason that Spielberg did that is because that was like a uh it was like a catchphrase for that refrigerator line or whatever refrigerator. It's like so tough you could survive a nuclear blast.
SPEAKER_03And in the in the Fallout 4, there's a there's a uh thing to that where like you find a refrigerator and and you look inside and there's like a dead child.
SPEAKER_00It's so wild, it's so funny. People are like, what the fuck are they talking about? So back at the newly christened Ghostbusters headquarter, Ray pulls up, shocking Peter with a new business car, an old beat-up 1959 Cadillac ambulance that needs a lot of work. Peter goes back inside and makes small talk with her new secretary, Janine, and waits around for business. Janine, sorry for the bug-eyed thing.
SPEAKER_03Janine is too good for that.
SPEAKER_00Uh Janine, because he kind of like insults her and then walks away. It's like Janine, sorry for the bug-eyed thing. Yeah. Oh, that's weird. Then Janine makes small talk with Egon. It's like, what do you like to do?
SPEAKER_03He crawls up in front of a desk.
SPEAKER_00I collect uh mold spores and fungus.
SPEAKER_03I love Egon. I love the guy.
SPEAKER_00He's Edward Raymond is just such a cutie.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_00He's this cute little nerd-looking guy. I know, and he's so like he's perfectly nerdy. So nerdy. A perfect nerd.
SPEAKER_03And the sequence when the he's like using his little device, and then the guy shows up.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_03And he's like touching in the mixture. And it just continues on his way. Yeah. And that guy didn't say anything. He's like, this is New York, I guess.
SPEAKER_00Like it's New York. Everybody just weird.
SPEAKER_03It's just weird shit.
SPEAKER_00I feel like I should have been well, just like watching YouTubers in New York City, you know, just go out and like film themselves doing stuff. And it's just like, man, is this con like, especially LA and New York City? It's like, this is just constantly what their streets are. It's just people doing it. There's not enough police. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03There's not enough.
SPEAKER_00Well, he wasn't doing anything wrong.
SPEAKER_03Okay. You're probably right.
SPEAKER_00Uh so after all this, uh, Dana arrives seeking an explanation for their events in her kitchen. Peter flirts vigorously with her, while Egon and Ray examine her briefly and speculate as to what may be the cause of her encounter. After decide, yeah.
SPEAKER_03After their their commercial says, We're ready to believe you.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it's like immediately just like, nah, Dana. Hey, they're just doing what they're supposed to do. They try to figure out how you can debunk it. And then once you can't, you find the ghost.
SPEAKER_03I know, but they're gaslighting the shit out of her.
SPEAKER_00At least they didn't ask if she was on her period.
SPEAKER_02That's true.
SPEAKER_00So after deciding on a plan to action, Peter insists going on, going with Dana back to her apartment where he haphazardly looks around. Um, the other two are gonna go and look up Zool and things like that. Uh, but when he goes in there, he does a piano bit and he's like, I hate this. Oh, he's so funny. Yeah, then you got his little squeeze stick gadget thing.
SPEAKER_03Like oh, okay. It's like a heart pressure thing attached to a radio antenna.
SPEAKER_00He's like, what is this supposed to be doing? He's not like, I'm I feel like he just like found something, put it on, and it's like this one pressure.
SPEAKER_03He's taking the radio pressure of the room or something. Like, I don't know. Honestly, this is exactly what I when I see today's ghost host ghost hunters doing stuff, that's not off like far off.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and you know, like because I love the ghost hunter shows, and I'm always like, I'm gonna actually buy some of these gadgets, and then you look at them, it's just all based off of like intellectual wiring in your house. Comic books, and they're all so like easily like tampered with that, you know, like in those shows you could like you know, they have like the EMF detectors and stuff. I mean, if you have a walkie-talkie and you just like hold down the button, it it will be.
SPEAKER_03It creates an electromagnetic field. Yeah, everything electronic does that, even when it's not like your TV does that, because as long as it's plugged in, it's still on a little bit.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Man, I love those shows stuff.
SPEAKER_00Absolutely love it. I do kind of miss um it it just kind of sucks with like ghost hunting shows. It's like they used to actually kind of have like a bit of creepiness to them, but yeah, and now they're so overdone.
SPEAKER_03Now it's it's so reality, it's so like ancient aliens, big hair guy.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and it's just I mean, and like I love Zach Baggins, uh, because he's so ridiculous.
SPEAKER_03Zach is that Zach Baggins?
SPEAKER_00Zach Daggins. Is he a puppet? Do we know for sure? No, he's like a tall buff boy. Okay, and it's just like, you know, like I remember just being like a kid watching all those shows and just being like, oh my god, scary. Yeah. And now it's just like Zach Baggins is possessed every episode. No, it's like, what's happening? What are we doing here?
SPEAKER_03You've lost all your professionalism. Just fucking sucks.
SPEAKER_00It's like they used to be fun to watch. Now they're cringe. We just lose everything. Um, there's also a great line where um um he's like, Oh, what's in there? And she says, That's the bedroom. Nothing happened, nothing ever happens in there. Bill Murray, what a crime. Oh, I know. So, but he mostly is just flirting with her. He looks in the kitchen and sees the eggs on the counter, but nothing else out of the ordinary. Dana is annoyed. Um, but Peter continues to beg her for a date, pledging to solve her problems in an effort to impress her. Because he's like gonna leave at one point, and then like she says something, and then he's like, it's almost like he says, So there's a chance. And he like comes back in.
SPEAKER_03So uh later. And I love when you open the fridge, he's like, Oh, look at all the junk junk food. Yeah, and it was literally like he held up some salami.
SPEAKER_00Like well, yeah, but it's like the disgusting packaged kind. Uh and those like, you know, like where baloney used to come in, those type of packaging. Loved it as a kid, but and there's a point where I just like, I've eaten too much bologna in these gross ass packaging. It's kind of like you know, when you get deli meat and those like the really gross-looking kind of deli meat, like ham and like turkey that comes in. It's like a bowl.
SPEAKER_01Oh, they're all together?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and they're all like smashed together and stuff. Yeah, and it's like I got this like slime to it. Dude, pigs and turkeys should not be together. Oh, not together. I meant like in a in a package. No, like I yeah, like all the turkeys in one package, all the ham's in a different package.
SPEAKER_03Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_00But I just mean like they're not together.
SPEAKER_03Swushed into one.
SPEAKER_00No.
unknownNo.
SPEAKER_00This is that would be disgusting. This has gone off the page.
SPEAKER_03We don't mix bird and hog.
SPEAKER_00That is true. That's how you get the bird hog blue.
SPEAKER_03I would love that. That sounds really tasty. Give me it, give me it.
SPEAKER_00So uh later the Ghostbusters sit around enjoying dinner, celebrating, getting their first customer, but Ray has to let them know that the meal is just that the meal has just used the last of their business petty cash. Fortunately, even as the business failure is staring them in the face, Janine finally gets an urgent call about a ghost that needs removal immediately. Hell yeah. And she hits the button. Yeah. And they all get so excited
The Hotel Bust And Slimer
SPEAKER_00and go. Yes. So Peter roll out. Yes. It's such a good scene. So they uh the three quickly dress and race out of their headquarters to the Sedgwick Hotel where the manager informs them of a ghost on the 12th floor. Uh they've always had problems, he tells them, but lately it's gotten out of hand. So the Ghostbusters assure him they will take care of it and head up to the 12th floor. Egon and Ray worry about their equipment, which Peter describes as an unlicensed nuclear accelerator and decide that they'll ignore the danger for now. They make uh bad as hell. They make chit-chat with a guest outside the elevator, and then they tell him they're going to kill a crock work cock cockroach, to which the guest answers, that's gotta be some cockroach. Take the elevator.
SPEAKER_03The real enemy of this movie is that guy trying to get on the elevator with a cigar. That's true. It's clearly a sign that says no smoke.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, but it's the 80s. It's okay. Can smoke in the elevator.
SPEAKER_03Even the water had lead in it. Let's go.
SPEAKER_00So almost immediately after the Ghostbusters exit the elevator, a mate startles them and they nearly kill her with their light beams up on their proton packs.
SPEAKER_03It's just like the NYPD.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and they're just like, and this is where she's trying to spray the water out or the fire out. Um, and then so the three split up, and Ray eventually sees the ghost, a rotent, a rotund green blob with a huge mouth eating everything on the room service cart. Ray tries to hit it with a proton pack but misses, and it flies away, frightened, taking the cart with it and passing through the wall, leaving behind a small amount of green slime. Love Slimer. Do you ever watch the uh Ghostbusters cartoons? Uh fuck yeah. Yeah, love Slimer. Slimer was like he's like their buddy. Is he their buddy in Ghostbusters 2?
SPEAKER_03I think there is a there is something of that. Okay. He's like around and the Egon is studying him. Ah, okay. I was curious. Because he's harmless, he's kind of harmless.
SPEAKER_00I was curious where that like became like, you know, canon that uh Slimer likes.
SPEAKER_03You just can't leave food. Fuck with the Ghostbusters. He just wants the food.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, of course.
SPEAKER_03So as long as there's no food around, he like he's kind of harmless.
SPEAKER_00Hey, if there's good food around, everybody wants that.
SPEAKER_03He just leaves goo all over the game. Matter you're green or white, blue or black. He never cleans out the shower drain. He leaves dirty dishes in the sink. He's a horrible roommate.
SPEAKER_00I like, you know, my boy Slimer out here just trying to use as best he can, and people like fucking Jason out here trying to put the man down.
SPEAKER_03Hey man, you gotta have boundaries when you live with somebody.
SPEAKER_00No, no, when you're a ghost. There are no boundaries, Jason.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, he is.
SPEAKER_00There's nothing but things that you can pass through. So Ray calls Peter on his walk talking. Peter, who is now face to face with a ghost, is suddenly attacked by it. Ray runs to Peter and finds him on his back covered in green slime, rolling around. I love that he's like, I know. There's so much of that in this movie. Yeah. Um, but otherwise he's okay. Egon calls them and informs the other two that the ghost went into the hotel's ballroom.
SPEAKER_03Yes, the ballroom scene is so good.
SPEAKER_00So they calm the hotel manager and then set to work on containing the little green ghost. They like lock the manager out. While shooting their weapons all over the room, Egon suddenly warns the other not to cross the streams because to do so would result in destruction of all life as you know it.
SPEAKER_03Mean bad.
SPEAKER_00What is bad? Try to imagine all life as you know it, stopping instantaneously, and every molecule in your body exploding at the speed of light uh uh stance. Uh total protonic reversal, Minkman. Right, that's bad. Okay, all right. Important safety tip. Thanks, Eagon.
SPEAKER_03This scene is so good. Like the all the cakes exploding, tables up turning. Oh, it's amazing.
SPEAKER_00And this is where you really get to like full like visual of the beams and like the whole trap situation, and it's fantastic. They're like, don't look at the trap too late.
SPEAKER_03I looked at it, nothing bad happened.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. All right. So after destroying much of the ballroom with their seriously unstable proton packs and their inexperience in aiming and controlling them, and Peter trying to do the table call trick, and the flowers are still standing. The Ghostbusters finally trap the ghosts in a uh uh in a specially designed bulk called a trap. Uh they burst triumphantly from the ballroom. We came, we saw, we kicked its ass before the anxious manager and hosts uh and a host of guests burst in, the ghostbusters haggle manager.
SPEAKER_03$5,000 bill. Obviously, never thought about it. And they head home victorious.
SPEAKER_00I mean, but like for real, you got ghosts, yeah, there's no other ghost hunters. You gotta pay $5,000.
SPEAKER_03He's like, I'm not paying this. And he's like, okay, we'll just let him out again. He's like, okay, all right, you got it.
SPEAKER_00It's called uh not to uh you know be like one of those people who talk about Martin Scorsese so much in an episode because the media has told me to idolize him, but it's like in Wolf of Wall Street when uh John Bernthal, another media loved actor, um there's the scene where like Leonardo DiCaprio, another media loved actor that I idolize, um, it says, All right, all right, sell me this pen. Hey, write this down for me. So I don't have a pen. Here's a pen. Supply and demand.
SPEAKER_01Oh shit.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Got it. So it's just like, that's how it works, baby. Hell yeah. And then you know what happens next, Jason?
Fame Montage And The EPA Threat
SPEAKER_00Montages, which your boy loves. I love that. So uh the successful hunt proves to be uh but the first of a sudden rash of hauntings, meaning brisk business for the Ghostbusters. There's a montage of series of missions, news spots, newspaper clippings, and a story about the Ghostbusters, new fame and success. There's one article, I think it's the Atlantic, says Ghostbusters. Um, and this says, Do ghosts have civil rights? Hell no. It's like we see Larry King doing a radio show talking about them, and then Joe Franklin uh interviews them. And also, Ray gets a blowjob, and it's a baffling thing in the movie. Yeah, it's just face and everything. It's just like the blowjob alone is one thing, the face alone is one thing. Put them together and it's just like, what are we doing here, good boys?
SPEAKER_03This is I I love it. He's so popular that even the ghosts want him.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Like you don't put me in a trap.
SPEAKER_00They don't have quid pro quo in Ghost World, they have ghost proco.
SPEAKER_03Oh. But like if ghosts are a thing, and they're are they only in New York because of this terrible building? No. They're all they everywhere, but the only place to take care of them is in New York. You'd think this the whole situation would have gone fucking viral, like platinum across the street.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I mean, well, they're definitely if if they did a proper Ghostbusters 3, they'd probably have like franchises and stuff, and it'd actually just be about a it'd actually be an economic movie instead of a ghostbusting movie.
SPEAKER_03Probably be a pyramid scheme, honestly.
SPEAKER_00And I mean, like you got other people, you got Zach Baggins out there, you got the ghost hunter boys, you got the uh Project Fear people, you know, they're all out there hunting these ghosts by catching them. That would make the world so much fun. You know, yeah, I'd actually, I'm actually like at home Ghostbusters. I'm kind of just like, let the ghost be ghosts. If ghosts are real and then demons are real, catch them demons.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, catch them.
SPEAKER_00But if you just got a ghost just chilling out, dap them up, say, like, you know, just once you take everything out of the cupboards, you know, put them back in.
SPEAKER_03Make friends with the ghost. Yeah. Like, hey, let me know if there's bad ones right now.
SPEAKER_00You know what? If you're not having any luck out there with girls in the real world, yeah, try to fuck a ghost.
SPEAKER_03That would take care of the whole red pill situation.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Just have a ghost. But then it would suck because it's like if you were bad in bed and the ghost was like, ugh, I'm gonna go. Oh, oh, if you were rejected even by ghosts, it's just like, I mean, because at that point, you can't even kill yourself and become a ghost because they're all gonna think you're bad a bit inside in bed.
SPEAKER_01You just face an endless cycle of rejection.
SPEAKER_00And then this is when you go on uh Reddit, and then you become red-pilled.
SPEAKER_03Ghost Reddit, make it a thing.
SPEAKER_00There will be like a bunch of red-pilled ghost hunters that only attack the female ghosts.
SPEAKER_03Oh no.
SPEAKER_00I hate where this is going. End it now. Uh influencers. The manosphere of ghosts. Ghostospheres. At this point, I'm just trying to find ways to add ghosts into things. It works every time.
SPEAKER_02I'm so sorry.
SPEAKER_00So the Ghostbusters soon hire a fourth man, Winston Zedmore, a uh blue-collar type guy who's just looking for a job, hired immediately by Ray and Peter Winston.
SPEAKER_03Do you believe all this shit? Yeah, I guess if you'll pay me. You're hired.
SPEAKER_00Winston has handed a couple of traps and led off by Ray to learn about getting rid of the ghost while Peter is informed that there is a man from the EPA waiting for him.
SPEAKER_03I kind of like this EPA guy.
SPEAKER_00He seems a little snarky. I love I know. There's something about it that this movie does the snarky snooty people so right. And they do it in such a ridiculous way that it's not even like frustrating to me.
SPEAKER_03And it's just because it goes along with the whole spiel.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, he didn't say the magic word. Plus the whole time he's like, you know, right.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah, definitely. Um until he shuts it off.
SPEAKER_00I like that we'll eventually see how they uh get rid of the ghosts and like incinerate them. I'm like, they kill ghosts.
SPEAKER_03Oh, that's the second death.
SPEAKER_00It's ghost murder.
SPEAKER_03Ghost murder.
SPEAKER_00I mean, eventually there's gonna have to be laws about it.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, there's gonna have to be ghost jurisdiction.
SPEAKER_00And then like we're gonna have to we'll ban the ghost death penalties. They can't vote. And then eventually, like the Ghostbusters start having their own like private ghost prisons, and then they have to. Jesus Christ, for profit to use private ghost, you know, like license plates and stuff like that.
SPEAKER_03I don't like this. I don't like this world we've created. Me neither.
SPEAKER_00You know, they're gonna be overrun, and there's gonna be like a lot of issues with it, and it's just like we gotta figure out our ghost systems. Our ghost like prison system, you know? There's too much, there's just too much bad stuff in there.
SPEAKER_03We need a ghost ice program.
SPEAKER_00I just like to think of like ghost prison is just like a bunch of ghosts trying to shive each other, but they're just like can't we deport them to Canada or something? Ghost Canada. Yeah, maybe I mean like the a ghost prison could just be like they have to go into the wilderness of Canada. I mean, it's like it seems pretty like they can't, they don't feel cold, they'll just be like the fucking chill.
SPEAKER_03There's nothing there, it's just boring.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, there's no apps. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00So uh when ghosts take over the world, call us, we'll figure it out later. So Peter briefly meets with uh Dana after her orchestra practice and flirts a bit with her before telling her about Zool, whom he has discovered is associated with an ancient Sumerian god of destruction, Gozer. He tells her that he'll go over it in more detail over dinner, and finally she agrees to date. Because hey, what movies taught you back in the day is if you annoy the shit out of a woman, eventually just be persistent, she will just be like, I guess this is the best I can do.
SPEAKER_03I guess I can't get away from you.
SPEAKER_00So I I better go on a date with you and hope that I don't get murdered, and then maybe you won't you will finally leave me alone. Or eventually, I'll guess I'll just move out of the city.
SPEAKER_03Or become a ghost or something.
SPEAKER_00So Walter Peck, the pompous CPA delegate, condescendingly talks to Peter, refusing to acknowledge that Peter is in fact a PhD and therefore Dr. Venckman, and briefly questions him about the possible environmental impact of their business and specifically their custom-built storage facility. He demands to see it, but Peter just patronizes him for a bit before throwing him out. He didn't say please. He did not. But he did eventually. He did eventually. He played ball. Played ball. He really wanted to see it. Yeah, and he's like, let me in. He's like, no, you can't. It's like you better come back with a warrant if you want to see this shit.
SPEAKER_03Then I'll sue you for wrongful persecution. That's not that's not what that's not a thing.
SPEAKER_00But I mean, it's just like, I mean, if he didn't get like codes and stuff, if he didn't get the code.
SPEAKER_03A court order is not a wrongful persecution. Yeah. Jesus.
SPEAKER_00Well, he only knows ghost law. He doesn't know humanity.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, that's fine. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00So Ray shows Winston how they unload the ghosts they've trapped into the storage facility, while Egon admits he is worried about the facility's looming capacity problem and the larger problem it indicates. To illustrate, Egon tells him that his latest research indicates that the city is experiencing a colossal increase in paranormal activity, comparing it to a 600-pound Twinkie. Peter joins him, mentioning the EPA and memorably asks, What about the Twinkie?
SPEAKER_03Dude, Egon.
SPEAKER_00Maybe you learned about the Twinkie.
SPEAKER_03What about the Twinkie? Tell them about the Twinkie. Uh bad analogy, Egon. It's a Twinkie. Nobody opens a Twinkie and doesn't immediately eat it. Why was that sitting out on the desk? Yeah, because no open there's no open Twinkie that has not been eaten within like a half a second.
SPEAKER_00Can I tell you something?
SPEAKER_03Okay, go for it.
SPEAKER_00I don't like Twinkies.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. They're not especially great.
SPEAKER_00I don't like any of those type of cakes. Like the little coconut ball ones. Hate of those. Those are bad. I actually hated a lot of snowballs. Any of that stuff. We learned a lot of that from Zombie Land. I didn't even like like cereal bars that much until I got like in junior high and high school. You know what they feel?
SPEAKER_03My children for free breakfast. What? Cereal bars.
SPEAKER_00Sugar.
SPEAKER_03Sugar, sugar, on sugar, and sugar.
SPEAKER_00Well, yeah, they gotta pay attention in class. Nothing helps that like healthy dosing of sugar.
SPEAKER_03But it makes them like really angsty when they get home and all they want is sugar. Because they get it first thing in the morning.
SPEAKER_00Just come in scratching.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, they kind of do. They kind of do that.
SPEAKER_02Sugary candy bars.
SPEAKER_00No, eat real food, you motherfucker. I know. It I mean it's wild because you know, like I grew up eating like uh frosted flakes.
SPEAKER_03And like Captain Cutch is just like my grandmother used to be for breakfast. It was frosted flakes with a fucking can of Pepsi. Yeah. That was my breakfast in the summer.
SPEAKER_00It's wild, bro. And like I love that now, like back in the day, I could well sometimes I wouldn't even eat in the morning. I just like wouldn't eat like all day until I got home. That's why I'm so skinny proper body development. Um, but like it's wild how it's just like as a kid, it's like, yeah, I'll eat some cereal and that'll last me to like 11 a.m. to lunch. And now I'm like just like cramming my face with food and just mean like I gotta go four hours without eating. But yeah, it is wild. Like what just we like just the media convinced our parents what it's okay to eat. Like I mean, it could be getting materials. Yeah, it's wild. So a brief shot at on the top of Dana's building shows that the dog like gargoyle statues at the top of the roof are breaking apart and the real animals are underneath the stone and it fucking rolls.
SPEAKER_03Hey, where the why did they build a uh building with a giant gate to hell on the top?
SPEAKER_00Oh, they'll explain it later.
SPEAKER_03Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_00This is like uh uh Totally normal. Is it Ivo? Ivo round something like that. No, they talk about it. So back inside, Dana arrives home and is once again accosted by Lewis, who's raving about his party. He's disappointed when Dana tells him that she has a date. He suddenly cheers up and tell uh and tells her if she can bring him to the party, and she's like, all right, maybe we'll see.
SPEAKER_03I love how he gets locked out every time he exits the street. I know, it's so good.
SPEAKER_00I love him at the party too. It's the scene that literally makes me be like, Rick Moranis is one of the greatest. He's so I mean I like I grew up watching him in movies all the time. Spaceballs, the honey I shrunk the kids thing. It's so good. He's so funny. He is a whole funny. And then he got punched in the face in New York City. What? Just by a guy passing him on the street. We got so many people in New York to punch you, punching Rick Moranis.
SPEAKER_03He just has a punchable face.
SPEAKER_00No! If anything, people should be going and kiss him on the cheek because he's a cute little boy. Guy.
SPEAKER_03Well, you punch him and then he kiss him.
SPEAKER_00I'm sorry for kicking you. I'm a sweet and shower. So uh she goes inside and talks on the phone. She sits in an armchair for a moment. We're noticing that uh the same growling sounds from the kitchen are happening before she can react. Three monstrous arms bust from the chair and hold Dana Down as she is dragged through the kitchen to the door uh to one of the terror dogs. Um, I love that you have like the hands on the door, and it's obviously like a like plastic door. It's so good. But the hands on the couch. Yeah, I was like, was it from my kid? I don't know. If this was like some Swedish ass ghost, then I would say why are there so many human arms on your couch? I don't know, but I was like, there's there's only there's there's two dogs, and there's like five arms. Um, and then they take her up on the roof, the gargoyles have completely broken apart, and uh whatever was in them is officially loose.
SPEAKER_03Hell yeah. Like the show gargoyles. Gargoyles, the cartoons. Gargoyles saved the day.
SPEAKER_00God, I hate man. I just hate like I'm trying to have a nice I go home, I get home from work, I'm undressing, I'm talking on the phone, I'm ready to cook some dinner. Next thing you know, there's a fucking gozer in my house. You open the fridge and it's like zoo! And it's like, oh god, let me guess. You wanna may take me to gozer.
SPEAKER_03Gozer juice, giant demon dog. Woo!
SPEAKER_00I will say, if these dogs were a little nicer, they'd be absolutely welcome in my house. I know, and they're so nice. No one would ever fucking try to rob me of those dogs. And if they were sweet, that'd be even better. With the horns and everything, yeah. Um, so um, low-key, kind of my favorite scene of this entire movie right here. Louis' party continues as he rambles on about the price efficiency of his hosting party. I just love that you like constantly brings something in. Oh, this is some like real salmon from this place. It costs like it usually costs like $60, but then I got it down for a discount because I, you know, I actually invited uh people I work for instead of my actual friends. Like one girl wants to loot, like leave, and it's like, no, don't leave. Like we can start dancing. Okay, we start dancing. Hell yeah. But everything in this scene um with Rick Moranis, he ad-lipped. Yeah, all the stuff he's saying is ad-lipped, and it's so funny.
SPEAKER_03It's so good.
SPEAKER_00So whoever punched him in the face, meet me in Tennessee. We're going 12 rooms. I'm gonna do my best Rocky montage to prepare for the floor.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. If you punch Rick Moranis, he'd probably die.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Um, but I love like so two guests show up at his party, hand Lewis their coats, and he throws them in the unnoticing the terror dog sitting on the desk. It roars and bursts through the door, apparently only after Lewis. He runs out of the apartment through Central Park before being cornered in an attack outside tavern. I don't know. I love he's leaving, somebody put a bear in my apartment. Like later, the doorman's like, somebody brought a cougar to the park. It's like, did you guys not see what this?
SPEAKER_03No, it's so funny when he's running and it like he just slams up against the window of that fancy restaurant. People just kind of look at him for a second and like it's fucking New York City.
SPEAKER_00Hey, hey, we're eating here. I love he's trying to go in the door, and it's just like, is there not one open door in this restaurant? Do they cut lock the door for people?
SPEAKER_03Wild. Oh, well, there was a sign that says no pets allowed.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and it's just like no rain is no no uh rigmarinuses allowed. Meanwhile, Peter arrives at Dana's apartment, stepping over the carnage of Lewis's party and knocks on the door. Dana opens it, dressed in a slinky red dress and asks, Are you the key master? Peter says no, so she angler slams the door in his face. He knocks again and enters, answering her question. Yes, I am the key master. If somebody asks if you're a god, you say yes. Yes. Anybody ever asks you're the key master? You say yes. If Sigorni Weaver asks if you're the key master. Yes, if Sigorni asks if you're the key master, that usually means something has to be inserted too first. So Dana says that she is Zool, and they must prepare for the coming of Gozer, the destructor. Peter talks to her and re uh resists the possessed Dana aggressive advances before requesting to speak with the real Dana. At first, Dana coy replies, There is no Dana, there is only Zool. And this I'll play along this line alone got the song only by nine-inch nails stuck in my head. What? There is no you, there is only me. So, like in my head, I like throughout the rest of the movie, I was like, there is no Dana, there is only Zool. Yeah, it'd be great. We could do them. You know, we could we could do a Fincher movie, we could do a Pixar movie, because you know uh Attic uh Trent Reznor is the one that scored those movies. Really? Yeah, he's won like two Oscars from scoring one scoring a Pixar film and one scoring a venture film. That's amazing. Yeah, because he did Girl with a Dragon Tattoo, uh Gone Girl, um, I think he's done like everything from Girl with a Dragon Tattoo on for David Fincher. And then, you know, he did uh what's the soul? Is that the Pixar about the Jazz? Yeah, those all different residents. At Ross Finch? Atticus Finch. That movie was pretty good. Yeah, uh, made me cry real bad. Um, and trying to kiss Peter at the same time, still trying to get through the real Dana. Uh he's kind of um he like puts her hands on her chest. The possessed Dana now becomes visibly annoyed at his persistence as Peter once again inquires about the real Dana. She replies in an unearthly demonic voice, there is no Dana, only so.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, if this was a Tinder date, then none of this would happen.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, no. It's like instead you'd meet them in a restaurant and they'll kill you.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, you just like you play along. You're like, all right, kinks.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Well, technically, actually, as a Tinder date, this actually might be pretty similar. You open the door, she asks, Do you want to have sex? And then you leave, and then that's user happening.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah, yeah. She floats a little bit, you kind of look past it.
SPEAKER_00That's from what I hear, is what Tinder is. Never actually used it. I never have actually I did use it to get my wife. Oh no, we lived in the same house, and I did have a Tinder, and she also had a Tinder. And then we like found each other. So she was like downstairs and I was upstairs and we were just texting each other from Tinder. That's hot. It was fun. And then it turns out we fell in love and got married. So Tinder does work, y'all. As long as you know the person, you know, since high school. You live in the same house and it's a bit, it really works. Um, so Peter sarcastically dismisses her and gives her to the count of three to talk to the real Dana. With each count, Dana presents further signs of her possession, at first demonically rolling her eyes, then panting like an animal, and finally roaring like a demonic beast and levitating above her bed. She turns over in mid-air to face down at Peter, who asks her to please come down. Dana roars fiercely at him, finally frightening him. He's like, I'm out of here. Yeah. Also love that it's like, I'm gonna count to three, and then she's like wiggling around like a child, like, ugh.
SPEAKER_03That's like my daughter when she goes to bed.
SPEAKER_00Lewis, looking disheveled and generally abused, runs out of Central Park rambling and asks a uh horse if he is the gatekeeper. I love this. The driver chases him off, so he runs away, screaming about a sign of Gozer's arrival and yelling that everyone will perish in flames.
SPEAKER_03I I love the idea of because I've seen this several times in movies, like you talk to a horse. Like what was it? The movie with Dave Chappelle when they about marijuana. Oh, half bake. He's feeding the horse all the food that he got.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I need to rewatch that. I haven't watched that since like Comedy Central and like Junior High. Oh, it's so crazy. God. So the NYPD arrives at the Ghostbusters headquarters to drop off Lewis, who's been captured and rejected by both the City Jail and Bellevue Psych Ward. Egon looks after him briefly and takes him inside. Lewis reveals his name as uh Vince Clortho, key master of Gozer. He goes on about the history of Gozer, how the god assumes various forms and would mean the destruction of the civilization he targets. During the exam, Peter calls and tells Egon about the developments with Dana, who now lies heavily sedated on the bed next to him.
SPEAKER_03Egon tells Peter in return to He showed up to her apartment with drugs. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00It's like, what was his plans here? Egon tells Peter in return about Lewis's psychic transformation and insists Peter come back to the headquarters, but also suggesting that Dana and Lewis meeting minor. Be hazardous. Also, Egon and Janine seem to be striking up a relationship. It's like, oh that's I absolutely love that. She looks nerdy. He looks nerdy. So they belong together. It doesn't work out. That's how it works. It's like if you see a guy in a leather jacket and a girl in a leather jacket, it's like, well, obviously they have to be together. So Winston and Ray are driving back to the office. Yeah. I know. I mean, it's gonna have to now. Winston and Ray are driving back to the office. Winston driving while Ray examines the very odd blueprints of Dana's apartment building. Winston asks Ray about his belief in God and speculates that the reason they've been so busy lately is because the dead have been rising from the grave. Rise from your grave. Rise from the grave. Hell yeah. As it was foretold in the Book of Revelations, as a precursor to Judgment Day and the End of the World, Ray ponders this.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, that's a fun part in the Bible.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, all the death and destruction.
SPEAKER_03All the dead rise from the grave, but nobody writes about it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Nobody else in history of the world writes about it. That's kind of why we have all new movies. Which I appreciate.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. So back at the headquarters, Walter Peck has returned with a core order, a cop and a uh con Edison worker intent on shutting down the storage
Shutdown Fallout And Gozer Explained
SPEAKER_00facility. Egon tries to talk them out of it, and Peter arrives just in time to antagonize Peck some more before the cop intervenes, and the con ed guy, although highly uh reticent of handling the equipment he has never seen before, shuts off the power grid. A warning buzzer sounds, and everyone clears the building as the storage facility rumbles and begins to destroy the basement.
SPEAKER_03It's so funny whenever they're about to shut it off and they just quietly start walking out of the room.
SPEAKER_00It's like Bill Murray's like, uh, I'm just gonna get on the stairs.
SPEAKER_03I know. And they're just quietly walking.
SPEAKER_00Like, you know what, dude? I don't know why you just can't have a civilized conversation about this. And you gotta immediately come in way too strong as a dick. Though soon we'll learn ridiculous.
SPEAKER_03A nuclear reactor, right?
SPEAKER_00Like you shouldn't just turn it off. It's not like your TV. If it's not working, you don't turn it off and back on.
SPEAKER_03Maybe get a second opinion. Yeah. Oh man.
SPEAKER_00Um, so a supernatural light uh occurs, all kinds of paranormal energy bursts through the building, it shoots out of the roof across town. Dana immediately wakes up from her sedation and walks towards her living room window. Lewis is excited, claiming that this is the sign he was waiting for. Ray and Winston arrive to witness the disaster's immediate aftermath, even as Peck demands they all be arrested for causing it. Enraged at the self-righteous, blowhard outright lying about them while ignoring his own responsibility in this disaster, Egon attacks Peck, getting everyone arrested. Egon's like, I've had it with this guy.
SPEAKER_03And I love when they're in jail and they let him bring like the blueprints.
SPEAKER_00Yeah and blueprints. Everybody's just joining in with him. Such a good bit. I love when they do that shit. So the free ghost, they run rampant through the city, but most of the energy seems to run directly to Dana, Dana's building. Dana growls at the energy, ripping out the wall of her apartment in a small explosion. Um, I love that you got the uh taxi ghost that looks like a zombie. Uh that boy fucking rules. And then Slimer in a hot dog stand, and I'm glad my boy is getting his glizsies.
SPEAKER_03He's an entrepreneur.
SPEAKER_00So sitting in jail, Ray shows Egon and Peter the blueprints of Dana's apartment building, pointing out highly unorthodox methods and materials, especially near the roof. Egon tells them that the building he's discovered was designed by an insane architect/slash surgeon named Ivo Shandor, uh, reputed to have performed unethical surgeries and experiments. In the 20s, Shandor was evidently so disgusted by the first world war that he decided he would try to bring about the end of the world with a recent society of Gozer worshippers. Oh yeah. They performed rituals atop of Dana's building, and Art Deco Roof Cap itself was meant to be the gateway to allow Gozer into our world. A guard arrives, Reginald Bell Johnson, bitches, yeah, boy, and tells the Ghostbusters that the mayor wants to meet them to deal with the rash of ghosts and other unbelievable phenomena happening throughout the city. Love it! And this is how you know Dan Ackroyd knows his shit. Because, you know, like 19 early 1900s, people were fucking experimenting with this shit secretly. I love it. I mean, just like what uh 40 years later, this is what we get like the Church of Satan and stuff like that. Man, I don't know. It's like people were just like, I want to mess with some freaky ass shit. Yes, man. And then they put that in this movie. Let's tempt reality. It's like if there is something more, I want to be the first thing to see it. And they should test it. But you know, as all things. We should have more gates to hell. As all things, of course, uh no evidence, and nothing ever really happens when they do this. So whatever. Until we have evidence.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, well, you can't have it until you build it. It's like the movie with Kevin Gostar.
SPEAKER_00Yes, and it's usually all made by editing software. That's the key. Yeah. The key master. Um, Lewis arrives at Dana's demolished apartment, introducing himself as the key master. A smiling Dana responds, she is the gatekeeper, and they share a passionate kiss before slowly making their way up to the roof via a mythical staircase behind the wall where Dana's fridge used to be. And then lightning starts flashing. Fuck yeah. I have the key bastard. The best. Are you kidding me? I asked my wife to roleplay tonight. Put on this dog mask. Here, wear these like platform shoes, and I'll sh I'll try to I'll crouch down and then you just bit me over and kiss me.
SPEAKER_03Oh, and peg me a little bit.
SPEAKER_00Oh, damn it, dude.
SPEAKER_03You beat me to the joke. Sorry.
SPEAKER_00And then bit me over the counter. That's what I was gonna say. So the four men and Peck me with Simon Peck are brought before the mayor, both arguing on their sides. Peck claims the Ghostbusters are carn artists and use nerve gases to force people to hallucinate, have visions of ghosts. Winston steps up and defends the things that he's seen as a as real, while numerous city officials like the fire chief persist evidence of bizarre phenomena, which the Ghostbusters have the only possible explanation. Ray reveals that the city is headed for a disaster of biblical proportions. They kind of start listing off a lot of things, and then, you know, our boy Vickman, dogs and cats living with each other, it'll be mass hysteria. One of the greatest lines in Tolmanish history. And then Vinkman Yeah, which uh Bill Murray eventually places Vickman finally appeals to the possibility that the mayor could be responsible for saving the lives of millions of registered voters. Oh no. Convinced the mayor throws Peck out of his office and offers whatever support he can to the Ghostbusters. Oh, and um so like the National Guard. Yeah. Uh Ray, everything was fine with our system until the power grid was shut off by Dickless here. Peck. They caused the explosion. Mayor, is this true? Peter, yes, it is. Peter, this man has no dick.
SPEAKER_03He's Dicklas. They didn't hear us.
SPEAKER_00Um I I love in movies how like you can pretty much convince anybody anything. As long as you go, there's a lot of voters out there. They're like, by God, you're right. I'll trust anything you say. You could you said the word voters. So people have gathered all around the apartment building, which has clearly become the center of the entire mess.
Rooftop Showdown And Stay Puft
SPEAKER_00They cheer as the Ghostbusters arrive with a police escort following the National Guard troops and Peter Muggs for the crowd.
SPEAKER_03There's such this huge buildup, and then it's them walking up the stairs.
SPEAKER_00It's so good. I love that like whenever they get into the car, it's like, come on, let's run some red lights. So funny.
SPEAKER_03Um and then because they're all smokers, they're having a lot of trouble going up 22 flights of stairs.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so but first they they so they put on the proton packs, prepare to enter, but suddenly an earthquake seems to swallow them beneath the streets. Eventually they emerge unharmed, though. Oh, yeah, I kind of forgot about that. They band together and hey, that's uh And once inside they climb steps that they uh take a while to do. Right. Yeah, they're having I mean, elevator much. You can't take an elevator on an earthquake.
SPEAKER_03Oh, yeah, it's not safe.
SPEAKER_00That's why they don't have elevators in LA.
SPEAKER_03They had the entire fire department there.
SPEAKER_00That's true.
SPEAKER_03They could just put it, yep, that's good. Laddered themselves up. Maybe it has one of those like spiky things at the top, like a Mission Impossible and kills everybody.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, man, that was a weird one. I never put that everyone. I'm pretty sure they just have like rubber bumpers.
SPEAKER_03Don't put death traps at the top. It's like insane.
SPEAKER_00Ooh.
SPEAKER_03I love that movie so much.
SPEAKER_00Well, I was thinking of like, you know, after Ghostbusters is being like, wow, let's just do the rest of the summer, just nothing but blockbusters. Yes. Mission Impossible is technically a blockbuster. Hell yeah, it is. So once inside, they must clock. So Dana and Lewis lie on a large stone table as lightning flashes in the dark sky above them. Dana seduc seductively wakes up, followed by Lewis, whose pants are unzipped, so they Oh. They stare in awe at the glowing roof cap in front of them, then walk towards the opposite stone pedestal where the terror dog statues once stood. Ghostbusters arrived to find Dana's apartment burned out, more and less destroyed. As in, there's a giant hole in the building. They see the staircase in the kitchen and go up. It's an open concept. It's very open. As open as you can almost get. Dana and Lewis stand on their pedestals and raise their arms to the sky. They are suddenly struck by bolts of lightning, which they redirected towards the cape caps door. I love it. They're all like shaking. Always a good bit. Always a good bit. These batteries are about to die too. No, uh causing it to grind open and signaling the arrival of Gozer, the Gozarian. Great name. With the temple doors finally open, Dana and Lois now absorb their full power as the Ghostbusters arrive just in time to see the lightning converge on the demonic couple in a huge blast, transforming them back into monstrous terror dogs, who now turn on, turn and roar menacingly to the Ghostbusters for leaping toward the side of the temple doors. Yeah, and then Gozer appears in the form of an exotic female with a tall, dark flat top and blood eyes.
SPEAKER_03She's definitely trans. That's why you know she's evil.
SPEAKER_00Is she?
SPEAKER_03I mean, she can take whatever form she wants. God's so fucking wild.
SPEAKER_00Egon points out that she's not really a woman.
SPEAKER_03Immediately attracted to her.
SPEAKER_00But rather takes the shape of whatever it wants. Peter goads Ray into talking to her. Ray very formally requests that Gozer returns to her place of origin, but she responds by asking if he is a god. He says no. And Gozer responds by shooting lightning from fingertips and nearly hurling them off the roof. Oh, it's like, if someone asks you if you're God, say yes. Just lie. I mean, might as well. If anything, the same thing was probably gonna happen. So they regroup and decide to attack Gozer, but she nimbly jumps clear of their streams and lands behind them. Another attack proves fruitless as she disappears rather than being caught in the streams, believing they are victorious. The Ghost Rusters begin to celebrate, but it's short-lived. Scozer's booming voice is heard above the city, demanding that they choose the form of destructor. That's nice.
SPEAKER_03Such a give.
SPEAKER_00I know. Man, and let's be real. When someone's like, clear your mind, I'd be like, that's absolutely fucking impossible. So if anything, if I can't like turn it into like a pillow or a blanket, then I'm gonna be like, all right, what's the rattest fucking thing I could see?
SPEAKER_03I know you immediately think of I'd be like, Godzilla. Like a giant boobied crab monster. I don't know.
SPEAKER_00Yes, because every time I see a crab, I'm like, damn, I wish I had a pair of tits on.
SPEAKER_03I mean, that's just what I think of it.
SPEAKER_00I don't know. Um Peter tells everyone to clear their minds and think of nothing. So no one, uh, so no one, so no form will be taken, but it is clearly too late. Ray admits that he did his best, but something just popped in his mind, something he thought could never harm anyone. It's the Stay Puff Marshall. Yes!
SPEAKER_03So good.
SPEAKER_00It's looking great. And it's like there's so little of them in it, but it's just perfect. Like I have like no, I've never knew what the Stay Puff Marshmallow man was. I never did either. I only know it from this movie, so I don't know if it's an actual thing. I didn't even know marshmallows had a mascot. I mean, everything's got a mascot.
SPEAKER_03I mean, marshmallows cereals. Especially back in the day, because everything had to have mascots. Yeah, dude. All the cereals have them.
SPEAKER_00And that's like the cool thing about like uh Japanese culture. Like, everything has a mascot. That is cool. Everything. The most silliest stuff, be like, here's our mascot.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, they have a god for everything. Like it's like the Greeks.
SPEAKER_00Well, they well, it's just like a literal like mascot. It's like person in a suit.
SPEAKER_03Well, yeah, but it comes from like the yokai, uh-huh. Which were like the little gods and demons that of every little thing that could possibly be, there was a demon or god for it.
SPEAKER_00Oh, nice.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yokai talk. Um, so a 10-story-wide puffy marshmallow man begins to walk the streets, uh, crushing everything underfoot. Um, that's something you don't see every day. I love it. When he is close enough, the Ghostbusters open fire, setting Mr. Stay Puffed ablaze as he begins to climb the building, King Tong style, baby.
SPEAKER_03And he like makes the fire bigger. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Because it like shoots up the building at him. Yeah. It rules. So running for cover, the Ghostbusters appear out of ideas until Egon suggests that they cross the streams. Oh, and everything closed the door. Yeah. It's like, ooh, put yours inside mine. The last touch tips. Um powerful stream. They're thinking this will destroy the build uh the portal. Realizing this will probably mean their doom. The Ghostbusters go ahead with the plan and set off to finish the god. Um, there is definitely a small chance we can't survive. So crossing the stream doesn't result indeed result in a catastrophic explosion, destroying the temple, incinerizing this incenterate incenterating the save puff marshmallow man. Raining matcha. Whoa, I'm fucking losing it during this paragraph. Raining molten marshmallow all over the street, including an on-looking Walter Peck. Sorry, my guy. So back on the roof, the Ghostbusters have survived and slowly emerge from the rubble. Covered in marshmallow muck, Peter covered the lease by the marshmallow, finds the roasted carcass of the terror dog and believes Dana is dead. Behind him, though, her fingers crack through the hardened ruins of the animal, and the Ghostbusters quickly break apart the rest, freeing her and Lewis. Lewis, who are you guys? The Ghostbusters. Who does your taxes? Spoken like a true accountant. So they leave the roost and Winston exclaims. I love this city. Oh yeah, it's great. And as the closing credits roll, the Ghostbusters return to the street to the roaring cheers of the crowd, Peter and Dana kiss in front of everyone. Lewis is helped into an ambulance. They drive off. The green ghost from the hotel roars towards the camera as it raids the black.
SPEAKER_03Hell yeah.
SPEAKER_00Salute to you, slimer.
What The Movie Is Really About
SPEAKER_00Um, so for me, to the point of the movie, I thought deep and hard about this, right? Like I sat there and I was like, what is this movie trying to say? And like what I came up is like the movie's just saying it's time to bust some damn ghosts.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_00I think it's uh it's all about like a very uh it's about small business and I think it's honestly I think it's about uh it's a movie that's saying that we should create new movies and ideas instead of uh spending the next like 40 years afterwards just constantly trying to remake the same things and just pumping us with nostalgia.
SPEAKER_03That's really deep. That's definitely not what it is.
SPEAKER_00It's just like uh it's just like boys gotta bust, then they gotta bust some ghosts. I mean maybe that's why they actually had like the blowjob ghosts because it's like ghostbusters. I mean, that had to probably be a joke in the writing room or something. I don't know.
SPEAKER_03Phantom agoric phantasmagorical.
SPEAKER_00Uh oh god. I mean, I I bet like like you know, like ghosts that like to have sex are just like they probably like hate the terms like incubus and succubus. They're like, we're not demons. Like, just because we die doesn't mean we don't want to have sex. Yeah, we just like the fuck. I mean, if anything, I hope that's what the afterlife is. I really do too. Everybody's like, orgies.
SPEAKER_03Let's go. Yeah. All the time.
SPEAKER_01Forever.
SPEAKER_00Specifically, me and you only.
SPEAKER_01Let's go.
SPEAKER_00You're the key master, I'm the gatekeeper.
Good Bad Ugly Fine Rankings
SPEAKER_00Alright, we're gonna hit up our category. The good, the bad, the ugly, the fine. It's where we discuss the good of the film, something we like, the bad, something we didn't, the ugly, something that didn't age well, the fine, something that did age well. Jason, what do you think is good about this film?
SPEAKER_03I just I love the I don't know the goofiness and the subtle the subtle comedy. And I don't know, sometimes it's subtle, sometimes it's not, but like it's just a fun ass movie. Yeah, and it's it doesn't try too hard to like do anything in particular.
SPEAKER_00Well, it's like it seems like a movie where you know, because Dan Aykroyd had like all this like paranormal shit that he was like very serious about. So he seemed like he made he's like, I want to make a movie about this. And so he makes his own, but they're like, Alright, we gotta tighten this up, which is perfect, which is what everyone should do with all their first scripts. Just really tear it down a little bit. And then they're like, Alright, we have nothing but funny people in this movie, so there's the comedy. Yeah, and then it just like all blends together perfectly. It really is.
SPEAKER_03It's just and it's it's such a like a a blue collar, like, but like I also have like the nerds, yeah. I don't know, it's it's it's so fun.
SPEAKER_00What I love about like doing this podcast is you know, just hearing all the little facts about how the movie comes together, right? And it just seems like they just kind of whipped up a movie real quick and they're all running out of time, and they're like, we just gotta hurry and do this, even to the song where it's just like, what the fuck? They just quickly whip together a song too, and it's like an iconic song everybody knows, and it's just you know, sometimes some people they have to spend years on scripts, other people they just like, yeah, uh actually let's just add lip most of it. Let's go. Oh, it's yeah, and then of course that works mainly for comedy.
SPEAKER_03I couldn't believe I think the bad part for me is that I never realized this as a child that this movie was so good.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I mean, honestly, mine was kind of similar. It's like I really wish, like as a young child, I watched this earlier because like fully all the way through, because that would have been amazing. But you know, I didn't have it on VHS, didn't have anywhere to rent it, so just kind of had to wait for it to come on TV. And I was just watching Dodgeball over and over in the idiocracy. So that was all that was not a bad way to waste your time, and then a bunch of like 90s like courtroom dramas and shit like that. Um for the ugly, I put Vinkman.
SPEAKER_03Oh yeah, for sure.
SPEAKER_00I mean, I love him in the movie and he's hilarious, so obviously it's like, but I'm just in real-world terms, like this guy kind of fucking sucks.
SPEAKER_03He does. I mean, he has his moments, yeah, for sure. But he definitely uh is an opportunity.
SPEAKER_00It's just like if there was no ghost, would he still have drugged Dana?
SPEAKER_03Probably.
SPEAKER_00It's just like yikes.
SPEAKER_03Depends on how the day went.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. And uh for the fine, I just said like all the guys, man. They all fucking everybody in this movie rules.
SPEAKER_03And I love a good uh paranormal movie, but I feel like you have to have a little bit of goofiness in your paranormal. I know.
SPEAKER_00This made me want to just like this made me just want to be like, all right, when's October?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, and that's what I love so much about the show Widow's Bay. They do introduce a lot of things.
SPEAKER_00Except it does like a better job of like the horror elements.
SPEAKER_03So it can be done. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00We've seen it. It is. I mean, and if we kind of lived in like a world where you know, you watch something for like three days and then you never think of it again, like Widows Bay could have been something big, you know? Yeah. But instead, it's like already gonna be lost to time in like another month.
SPEAKER_03So no, but it's coming out with a second season of sweet. So it'll be back in time then I want to see that Cthulhu come out and run a coffee shop. I hope I make it happen.
SPEAKER_00I hope they kind of like, you know, uh subvert our expectations and it's something completely weird. Like not Cthulhu, but I mean they'll probably have a Cthulhu situation. I fucking I need it. A classic Cthulhu situation.
SPEAKER_03Classic.
Double Feature Recommendations
SPEAKER_00Alright, now we're gonna hit up our next category, double feature. It's where we recommend a movie to go alongside this movie. Jason, did you come up with something?
SPEAKER_03Yeah. So mine is a it's a kid's show. It's called Gravity Falls.
SPEAKER_01Never heard of it.
SPEAKER_03It's so good. It's like it's so it's it's all about paranormal. It's these two kids that go to live with their uncle.
SPEAKER_00Oh. I've never seen it, but I have seen it.
SPEAKER_03Amazing.
SPEAKER_00My kids love it.
SPEAKER_03I love it. Holy shit.
SPEAKER_00It's got an eight point nine out of ten on IMDB. That's insane.
SPEAKER_03It's really, really good. And we just finished up the the seas the last season this morning, actually. And it's so man, it's incredible. It's like and the characters are so good. Like Mabel that Mabel is one is the sister of the there's I can't I can't even remember the boy's name right now. But like I don't know. We we got a there's a pig in it and they waddles. It's adorable. We got a squishy of it on our vacation this past week. It's it's just such a fun show. Hell yeah. I love it a lot. Cool. There's even books about it. Really? Barnes and Noble.
SPEAKER_00Is it on Disney or Am uh I think it's on Netflix?
unknownCool.
SPEAKER_00Um, so what if I told you there's a movie about witches? Starring Jack Nicholson. Michelle Pfeiffer. Susan Sarandon. That sounds amazing. Cher? And what if I told you this movie was directed by the guy that directed Mad Max Fury Road? What? Yeah. It's called Witches of Eastwick. I've never I've heard of it. I've heard people say that. Oh dude, it's fucking fantastic. So it's like three single women in a picturesque village have their wishes granted at the cost when a mysterious, flamboyant man arrives in their lives, Jack Nicholson. Essentially the devil. Yeah. He's such a good devil. You know, because he looks like the devil. He is devil. Um it's such a great fun movie. And it's just, you know, it's just as we continue to go through this podcast, I will constantly keep bringing up different George Miller movies. Nice. Um and constantly say, Isn't it fucking crazy that the Mad Max guy did this type of movie? There's a lot of great like special effects in the Witches Beast, which like some of it doesn't work, but then some of it does, and it's just like, I don't know. It's a fantastic movie and I love it. And I think Cher's a really Cher's a really good actress and it's crazy. We are gonna do Moonstruck eventually.
SPEAKER_01I'll keep saying it until we do it. Oh, she's still alive.
SPEAKER_00Have you seen her?
SPEAKER_01She looks great.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, she's she's like an amalgamation of she's like a one of those creatures from the Black Rig lagoon or something. She's been just assembled with plastic surgery, and I I love that for her.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it's great. She seems to be living it up. She was on something recently, like singing on something. I can't remember what it was.
SPEAKER_03If we create cyborg human beings, which I feel like Pete Hug Test is on his way to that because he's he's doing his best. Testing he is, he really is. If we get there in my lifetime, which we fucking better.
SPEAKER_00Otherwise, why are we fucking here?
SPEAKER_03I'm so jealous. I told my kids yesterday, I was like, if you guys get flying cars before I die, I'm gonna be so pissed.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_03But like, if they get cyborgs too, I'm just gonna have to end my life and or become a cyborg.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, put me in a robot, bitch.
SPEAKER_03I want to be a robot, at least 70%. And some say iRobot.
SPEAKER_02And join us next week.
SPEAKER_00Say robot. That made me think of the movie iRobot.
SPEAKER_03And I was like, that movie's so good too.
SPEAKER_00Which then immediately led me to think for some reason about uh The Office, that scene where Daryl uh says iBaby Daddy. And then I was like, what if I just said iRobot? Like he says iBaby Daddy.
SPEAKER_03I just introduced that show to my youngest, and she loved it.
SPEAKER_00Good. We're almost done. Like I every year I at some point I put it on and as like just watch like half an episode as I go to bed.
SPEAKER_03It's like she she shows me Bluey and it introduces me to how bad of a father I am compared to the Bluey father. Yeah. So I have to introduce her to how adults really are. I watched like the office.
SPEAKER_00I watched a scene from Bluey that was so it was just like all quiet. He's like just chasing like a little like boat while it's raining outside. It's the most fucking beautiful scene I've ever seen in my life. Beautiful show. And I was like, hold up, Bluey fucks. It fucks. For real. Insane. I was like, am I gonna have to pop out a kid to watch this shit?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, but no, if you ever think you were a good parent, you watch Bluey and he'd be like, I have room to improve.
SPEAKER_00Oh uh, and those dogs are blue healers, and my dog is part blue healer. Oh yeah. Um insane dogs. Um, but they're blue.
Jurassic Park Tease And Closing
SPEAKER_00All right, that is the conclusion of Ghostbusters. I hope you enjoyed it. We're gonna continue our summer of blockbusters. Boom boom boom. I should have started this at the beginning of July. I mean, I guess we kind of did, and like some of the movies we made a lot of money. So next week, um and honestly, like as soon as I heard the passing of Sam Neil, uh one of like the best 90s actors, using so many things that you just don't think about. Um The piano, goddy's so good. Into the mouth madness, fucking fantastic. Yeah, that's a that's a John Carpenter movie where it's like he's essentially like, what if Stephen King uh really started finding some, you know, fucking demon shit and that's what it is. That's awesome. It's great. There's a shot in that movie that is fantastic, and Sam Neil crushes it. That's cool. Um, so yeah, I wanna talk about Sam Neil and I wanna talk about Jurassic Park because I've been wanting to do it for years, and I just keep never thinking about it when I'm thinking of a movie to do. So we're doing, you know, I don't know, one of the greatest fucking movies ever made. And I'm only saying that because the media told me to idolize it. So we're doing it. Yeah, Jeff Goldblum. Oh it's gonna be hard taking notes while I'm viciously masturbating. So join us for next week where I have carpal tunnel in my arm, my wrists. So, yes, join us for Jurassic Park, one of the greatest blockbusters in the history of blockbusters done by the man who created the blockbuster himself, Steven Spielberg.
SPEAKER_01Clever guy.
SPEAKER_00I idolized the shit out of that boy. So thank you for joining us this week. Hey, are you a good person? Do you like doing good things for people? And you are you a not a six-year-old man who or woman who doesn't like the youth, then leave us a review. Then leave us a review. Are you just the burns from the symptoms? Then please stay away from our podcast. But if you're a good guy who, even if you don't like our podcast, wants to give us some criticism, but also give us five stars. Please. There's literally nothing wrong with giving people five stars.
SPEAKER_03We're all trying to help each other here.
SPEAKER_00You know what? Don't attack the small people. Yeah, attack the big people. Jason is taller than me. So if you see us, attack him. No, but uh leave us some reviews, even though it's a bad review. It really gave me so much content for this one episode.
SPEAKER_03Five stars plus a bad review. Great.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Love it. Would love to be better at the podcast. Would love the five stars.
SPEAKER_03Constructive criticism is key. And you know you are the key masters. We are the gatekeepers. How about this?
SPEAKER_00You leave it five stars and a criticism and re recommend the movie you want us to cover, and we'll make it the best episode you've ever heard. Unless you pick a shitty movie that we're gonna do. Nah, but leave us some fan mail, leave us some reviews, follow, subscribe, like, call your mom, tell her about it.
SPEAKER_03Or just call your mom, check in on her.
SPEAKER_00She's probably thinking about it. She's pretty good last night at my house. Oh god. Damn, Jesse's feeling different. One bad review. Jesse's a bad boy now.
SPEAKER_03All right. Oh, the outlaw of podcasting.
SPEAKER_00We got him. Um, but yeah. Do the stuff I said. And while you're at it, thank Joey Prosser for our intro and outro. Uh, you get follow him on X at Mr. Joey Prosser. And this has been the We Recommend Podcast. I'm Gozer.
