unknownHey Matt!
SPEAKER_03Hey Ken. Hey Matt! Hey, Ken.
SPEAKER_04Oh, there you are.
SPEAKER_03Here I am. My mic is about to fall off my station. Hang on.
SPEAKER_04We're in a new studio. I got I uh it's a little bit bigger. I was I I lost you there for a second.
SPEAKER_03I know I know. I was hiding underneath this this large um cabinet here. Actually, it's not larger, but it's I like it's it's it's more roomy.
SPEAKER_04Roomy and it it's more organized.
SPEAKER_03I like the new layout. Less shelving, less space, less room for our voices to travel through. True, true. And we we save ourselves a ton of money on um pads.
SPEAKER_04Yes, yes, the soundproofing.
SPEAKER_03Hopefully. I mean, hopefully, because if the sounds sounds bad, then I'm gonna have to get proofing. Oh, there we go.
SPEAKER_04You guys know before we do right now, because we haven't listened back to what we're recording at this very but we do, we did do an audio check before we started.
SPEAKER_03And I sounded amazing. I didn't know he really did. I sounded amazing. I sounded okay, you know. Yeah, he was sounded okay. I sounded amazing. Amazing.
unknownAnyway.
SPEAKER_03Uh what's new this week? What's new this week? You know, not a whole ton that we haven't covered already. Um I mean it's three weeks into the future from this date.
SPEAKER_04You saying that we're boring, we just kind of do the same thing over and over again, or is the fact that we just we've got this is the third episode we're uh recording today.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, exactly. But also, we do so much stuff in our lives, we're so busy that we just don't remember what we do. You're right, are you? You know, so it's like so much stuff.
SPEAKER_04Well, if people are out there listening to us and they uh they're bored, not from listening to us, but they're just bored, they can always go to our uh website, phantomjourneys.com, leave your experiences with us. We'd like to hear from you. Uh hear what you've encountered with ghosts, aliens, bigfoot, cryptids, anything paranormal. We want to hear about what happened to you. Absolutely. And yeah, maybe we will all get in touch with you. Come on board or come on air and talk to us, or we can uh relate your story. Exactly. Uh it's whatever you're comfortable with. Uh but here it is, it's now August.
SPEAKER_03It is closer to September, but it's it's still freaking hot. It is still hot. It is currently 84 degrees in my studio. Oh my gosh. But whatever.
SPEAKER_04Have you ever like come home from work and you're just like, I feel like a baked potato. Yes, usually every day. You're like the outside's not too bad, but the inside's just feel cooked.
SPEAKER_03Yes. Yes. Yeah, coming home lately during this heat wave that's hitting everywhere. Everywhere, basically.
SPEAKER_04That's called climate change. I mean, uh to go uh political or anything, but it's science, damn it.
SPEAKER_03110 and we got onto my car the other day. Oh my gosh.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I I this is not right. I mean, I said 112 the other day, but I figured it's just because the car is baking a little bit. But it's still it went down to like 108 when I started driving.
SPEAKER_03That's hot. Yeah, it's it's it's not even not even good.
SPEAKER_04I think I think baked potatoes cook at about 150.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, so we're close to it. Yeah. We're not quite baked potatoes.
SPEAKER_04I mean, I it depends, I guess, how long you want to cook it for. Most people go for like 450. We're kind of steamed potatoes. But but I think you can still cook a potato long enough at 150. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03We're still a little we're still a little chewy. Not fully soft, but you know, uh we're definitely half baked. And not in the fun way. Um so anything paranormal happened to you? In the last 30 minutes that we're talking about. Never mind, you cut that part out. It's all good. Leave it in for the crack. Um not really anything too crazy. I've just been kind of researching and kind of coming up with ideas for Halloween, because Halloween's come up really quickly. Oh, again. Because we kind of missed five months of we didn't uh we didn't get the plan enough.
SPEAKER_04We were gonna do something special this Halloween and we wrote it down.
SPEAKER_03Where did you write that down? I remember what we were doing. No idea. I think you know, I've actually been going to do Damn my short-term memory. What are you saying? Huh? Huh? What are we doing? Um what are we doing? I was going to do Poldergoist. Because we're we're going to do Haunted Season this season. Okay, okay. But it came back and haunted us instead. Yeah. Um, so I mean we'll still we'll still pull it on for the next until next year's so we can get enough episodes in.
SPEAKER_04We need to do something like live or something. Yeah, we can we are we set up here where we can do a live broadcast?
SPEAKER_03I would love to. I got myself a new internet provider and I I'm not hardwired into it. So I'm Wi-Fi to the tower and then wi fi to the house.
SPEAKER_04Okay.
SPEAKER_03Sucks.
SPEAKER_04So we probably wouldn't be able to well but by October 31st we should be wired. No. Okay, no?
SPEAKER_03No, no. No. Because I have to cut cut the price on my my uh internet. So uh okay, so we'll figure something out. We'll figure out we'll figure something out. Down geo worrier, little cotton sauce. Okay. So Anyhoos, he's 10. So, what did you think of last week's episode with Johnny? It was really good. I it was fun to have someone on the show that had so much knowledge about cartoons throughout the last hundred years. Exactly.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I mean that guy was um I was really I was really happy to to bring him on because you know we're always looking for show ideas and stuff, and I thought we've been gone for five months. What's a good way of pulling people back in, getting people interested in the phantom journeys again? And it's like and something that people haven't heard a million times already. Yeah, it's like Saturday morning cartoons, which everybody loves. Saturday morning cartoons, and the paranormal boom exactly that's an episode right there, and tell me one other paranormal podcast show that's had that topic.
SPEAKER_03Don't actually go and tell us if you're on it come on if you're on a party.
SPEAKER_04No, come on to the show, come on to our website and tell us. I want to know because I might want to listen to it. Well, I just might want to listen to it.
SPEAKER_03Well, yeah, yeah, you maybe, maybe, maybe. Sorry, I have this habit of sitting back to my mic and sit forward.
SPEAKER_04Sit up and put talk into the mic.
SPEAKER_03Okay, yeah, so you know, it was fun to talk about uh and remember the old shows like the old Ghostbusters, not so much the the real Ghostbusters, but the Bookbusters. But the the one with the gorilla and the car, and just it was just fun and all the equipment they had as well was it was it was a trip down memory line. It really was, yeah, it really was. So uh shout out to Johnny Fair.
SPEAKER_04And thank you for coming on.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Um, you can find links to his uh former podcasts uh on our website and um his work. And he's uh does voiceover acting and everything else. If you're looking for voiceover actors, get in touch with them. Absolutely. If you can't get in touch with them, get in touch with us and we'll pass you along.
SPEAKER_03And you can also find other uh people that we have on the show their sites.
SPEAKER_04Past uh guests are all in the link area. Exactly. Uh, who would they find there? They'd find someone like um, I don't know, um Ron Strickler. Exactly. Um Preston Dennett. That's right. Um Eric Goldman.
SPEAKER_03Um who's um uh uh is it uh Pennsylvania? Oh the Pennsylvania Bigfoot pretty soon the Pennsylvania Bigfoot Society. Wasn't that in in 78? I think you're right. I think we're pretty soon. Yeah, go check that out on the website if you're in that uh in the Pennsylvania area.
SPEAKER_04And then um yeah, and then if you have ideas for guests that uh you'd like to hear us uh talk to, drop a line, let us know.
SPEAKER_03Or if you're somebody who has an experience and you would like to be on the show, or send us your story, and we'll be more than happy to read it out and share your experience. He likes to do uh I like sound effects. Yes, yes, yes, yes. So um you're ready for today's episode? Yes. Ken, wait. Let's go to a break, and when we come back, we'll get into our episode. Sound good? I guess. I guess. Well, yes, it doesn't sound great.
SPEAKER_01Alright, we'll be right back. Stay tuned, and I'll bring you back to the dead center of this podcast.

SPEAKER_03Okay, so what's the episode today? Yeah, well, well, Ken, why don't you tell us what this episode is about? Because I thought this was your episode. No, it's yours episode. Oh crap. Oh god, what am I doing?
SPEAKER_04Well, let me uh no. I'm we're just joking around. I I am prepared. Today's episode is called Meeting at the Crossroads.
SPEAKER_03You know what that sounded like really quick before we get into that.
SPEAKER_04The title or the way or the way I said it. The way you said it? No, I wasn't really listening to myself.
SPEAKER_03It sounded like you know, uh, you know your man from As You Wish. Inconceivable.
SPEAKER_04Well, I was hoping you were gonna say I sound like Brad Pitt or somebody, but I'll take the inconceivable guy. Inconceivable. Uh so we're meeting at the crossroads. Yes. And the the folklore concerning the metaphorical and metaphysical crossroads. Alright. Let's bring it. Bring it before you sing it. Well, you know what? He's asked that I not sing so much anymore. Uh so most people in their lifetimes come to a point where they come to the metaphorical crossroads. Do you stay in the life you know and continue as you have? Or do you choose to make a change and take a life-changing chance for something new? Uh, for most, the coming to the crossroads is just folklore. But to some, it resembles a time in their life where they had to make a change. Their current status in life makes it impossible to continue as they are due to financial difficulties, death, loss of a partner, or the feelings of utter loss. Or perhaps they have an unfulfilled whole in their current life. Coming to the crossroads generally means that when someone has had enough, and that change, whether desired or forced upon them, must be made, you arrive at the crossroads where the future path lays before you. To choose which direction you must now travel. You can go straight and continue with some things in your life changing. You can go right and do something completely different. Or you can go left and make a complete change in your life from where you will call home to the life you decided to choose for yourself. Or ultimately you can reverse and go back the way you came and continue your life in the way it was. In reverse. Because it actually sounds like instead of going forward, you actually take the step back and go back to where you don't change, where you don't speak, you don't uh flourish. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Very true.
SPEAKER_04Of course, you don't know if you're gonna flourish in the other any other direction. Well, that is very true. But you are making the change. Yeah. We see this clear clearly depicted in the Tom Hanks movie Castaway. Chuck, Nolan, Tom tanks, at the end of the movie, we find him at the literal crossroads. He has survived five years alone, deserted on an island, struggling to survive. He is rescued and finds that he has severely outgrown his former life. He is no longer the person he once was. He has lost his former fiance and does not fit in with the life he once knew. Chuck drives to the crossroads, wherein where his future is wide open, and all he has to do is decide which route to choose. He could go back from where he came and be miserable or he can take the one of the paths in front of him. It isn't until a sign from the wings painted on the rear of a pickup truck that leads him to fly free from his past and venture out to make new connections and a new future for himself. He chose to follow the wings of an artist whose drawing of an angel wings got him through his difficult ordeal and survival on the island. So many of us find ourselves at the crossroads of life, where we need to make a difficult choice as to our own futures and how we should proceed through life. There is also a spiritual crossroads that many find themselves at without knowing that they are at the intersection of what could change their lives forever.
SPEAKER_05Fair, fair.
SPEAKER_04Here the crossroads in the realm of folklore and the paranormal represents a crossroads where the spiritual veil between the two worlds is the thinnest, and that many come seeking for a possible deal with the devil himself. Did you ever make a deal with the devil? No? No. What if he offered you, I don't know, candy? Maybe. Maybe? Depending on the candy? Depends on the candy, that's for sure. What if it's that hard candy that was in like your grandparents' uh little bowl on the coffee table?
SPEAKER_03Probably not. Okay. Yeah. Gummy bears? Maybe. Maybe? Maybe. Okay. I am I am susceptible to literally gummy bears.
SPEAKER_04Oh, you actually have a bag of gummy bears at the end.
SPEAKER_03I swear to God, the devil wasn't here.
SPEAKER_04I got a new uh I got a new man cave and on my new desk. The bottom drawer is my gummy bear drawer.
SPEAKER_03My drawer is just a gummy bear. I have uh a big bag. And a stapler.
SPEAKER_04That's really good.
SPEAKER_03Because you always want to stay in your gummy bears.
SPEAKER_04There's something else in there. Oh. The stapler.
SPEAKER_03It's a staple of the bag when you're closed.
SPEAKER_04Well, it's because it's got the little pinch thing at the top. Gotta have fresh gummy bears.
SPEAKER_03How else are you gonna close your gummy bears? The stapler.
SPEAKER_04Um uh The Devil Himself. This interpretation of the crossroads stories is made famous by the story of legendary bluesman and guitarist Robert Johnson. The story, and there's a good documentary on Netflix about Robert Johnson. Yeah. If what I tell you about Robert Johnson interests you, go to Netflix, look it up. For sure. Uh it's I think it's called Crossroads with Robert Johnson or something to that uh name, but it's really good uh documentary.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Uh the story of Robert Johnson is that he sold his soul to the devil at a Mississippi Crossroads in the 1930s in exchange for a mastery of the guitar. According to the myth, he met a stranger at the intersection of highways 61 and 49 in Clarksdale who tuned his guitar in Grand Jam's supernatural musical abilities. Uh, before Johnson met this stranger that tuned his guitar, he was an average to poor guitar player, where he was seldom given a chance to play. Uh the small blues clubs because he is playing was so poor that no one wanted to hear him play. That's really sad. That is sad. Something you really love and nobody wants to because you're so bad at it. Yeah. Yeah. Uh Robert Johnson disappeared from his community and no one knew where he had gone. He returned over a year later, and suddenly his mastery of the blues guitar was astounding. His playing uh rivaled those of the masters, and even the blues masters of the time had trouble performing the chords and playing that Robert Johnson could do now without effort. Robert became a blues legend and played to sold-out crowds and made some of the earliest blues recordings that influenced many of the blues artists and legends we know today as Muddy Waters, BB King, Buddy Guy, and gave the blues the recognizable sounds it has. People were amazed at the change in Robert's playing and went from poor to mediocre to a guitar master in the span of a little over a year. How can someone make that much of a change in their craft? Did he find a guitar guru that through relentless training and practice that led him to this change, or was it something more? Whether Robert Johnson started started the story, or the people around him, or the crowds that came to see him play, the story that became part of his lore and legend was that Robert met with the devil at the crossroads. He didn't do anything to lessen that story, as the rumors. In fact, he helped the story uh thrive because it helped uh keep the mystique and ticket sales high for his concerts.
SPEAKER_03Before you get into that, yeah, it's interesting. But like, if you're gonna make a deal with the devil, I mean why do you go like, oh, I want to be the best guitarist in the world? What are you gonna just say like give us a million dollars?
SPEAKER_04I'll live. Because there's a difference between being having a million dollars and having mastery over passion.
SPEAKER_03Oh, yeah. So is it better to ask for like you know, uh a mastery over something rather than what what would you say your passion right now is? Writing. So I'd probably be a poor wrong.
SPEAKER_04Would you rather go to make the devil deal with the devil for a million dollars and be a poor writer, or be a master writer and make a million dollars?
SPEAKER_03Well, that's true. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_04But you know what would happen though? You'd sell your soul to be a master writer and nobody nobody's still publisher. Well, be a master writer that nobody gets to see. That would be your lifetime. That would be five times more than you don't you don't get to profit from it. Some guy named Spike that finds it in a drawer after you're dead, ends up putting it under his name, and he ends up becoming the millionaire. That's true. That's how the devil would get you.
SPEAKER_03That's just always the devil in the details. Yeah. Oh, I like that. Did you just make that up? Uh no, but it you know it exit has existed for years. That was really cool how you just put it. I I've heard it before. I just how you quickly you uh brought that up. Well, you know it popped in there, you know.
SPEAKER_04Like wow, I was impressed. I was impressed.
SPEAKER_03No, wait, right, right. How you threw that in there. Yeah, it just popped in there.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Devil devil's in the details. Yeah. Yeah, I think I think because when you really look at it, a million dollars is just monetary. It's just well, yeah, it's a thing. Yeah. Whereas if you have a strong passion for something and being the best at it and being famous for being the best at it, yeah, I think is far more desirable.
SPEAKER_03Ask for a million dollars and be like, oh yeah, you can have it easy. Yeah, yeah. It's still a little hard to build it. It's still a little hard to get to. I mean, our things are at least a billion these days. Just to just to make it through the week. But fucking you need a billion dollars to get to the week? Yeah.
unknownWow.
SPEAKER_04Gas prices, man. Oh, that's true. I filled up and we were almost six dollars a gallon. And I know the rest of you in the country is like, six dollars! Yeah, we based on the highest gas here to begin with, and then Diane Warren, all that stuff.
SPEAKER_03When I was down in Oregon, the gas prices were like $4.99.
SPEAKER_04Did you pump your own gas?
SPEAKER_03No. They have to someone else has to pump their gas for you. I'm like, you know what? I'm moving to Oregon. Nice. Just that's it. Just for the gas. Just pull up the gas station.
SPEAKER_04And now he's moving to Oregon, and I'm gonna come up visit and go Bigfoot hunting. Exactly.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_04So whether or not uh Robert Johnson uh started the story or just embellished the story, whether it was true or not, it helped with his ticket sales, it helps with the popularity. And with his songs, Crows Crossroad Blues and Me and the Double Blues help keep his part of this myth going. Interesting. Robert Johnson unfortunately died at the age of twenty seven.
SPEAKER_03That's yeah, that's another thing. Sorry to cut you off, but that's a I don't know if it's so much paranormal, but at the age of twenty twenty-seven. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04I'm gonna talk about it. No. It's actually the same paragraph I'm reading. He's psychic. I am. In the music world, the age of twenty-seven is a curious age for famous musicians to pass away. Robert Johnson is said to be the first music musical superstar to die at the age of twenty-seven. Other famous musical artists to die at twenty-seven include Brian Jones, the founder of the Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Janice Joplin, Jim Morrison, Kirk Cobain, and Amy Whitehouse. This is known as the 27 Club, impossible linked to the similar deal with the Dark Stranger at the crossroads of their career. Did they make a deal with the devil?
SPEAKER_03Question mark? Now I know this sounds a little morbid, but so the 27 Club is still it's still a thing, right? I mean it's I'm sure it is. I mean if I stopped at Amy on like I stopped at Amy Winehouse, but I bet you if we do a search now, we've got to I was thinking if you pay attention to like you know artists or whatever between 25 and 26 that are really big, will they make it a 28?
SPEAKER_04So I mean like they shine so bright that they they fizzle out too early. Did they make a I think Jimi Hendrix was only 27?
SPEAKER_03Was there I still listen to him to this day, like fucking legendary things?
SPEAKER_04I know. It's just was it the fact that they were they made the devil the deal with the devil, and then that that's the price you pay? You only you're only successful and famous till the twenty age of twenty-seven? I mean, that's the devil in the details as you brought up.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah, you go. Who knows? Who knows indeed? Question mark. Fair, fair.
SPEAKER_04However, the crossroads are also a place where you can find Papa Legba.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Papa Legba is a central wa spirit in Haitian voodoo and West African Furun. He serves as the guardian of the crossroads and the intermediary between humanity and the spirit world. Known as the master communicator who speaks all human languages, he opens the gates for communication, rituals, and opportunities. His fev or symbol commonly features a cane, a key representing his control over doors and paths, and the colors red and black. He represents the crossing point between the mortal world and the spiritual realm. Papa Legba becomes the immediate intermediator between the desires of mortal man and the realm of the spirits. Papa Legba is the gatekeeper, and offerings of tobacco, candy, coffee, or even rum must be made prior to arrival at the crossroads. With the exception of the tobacco, you can I like the same gifts. Yeah, yeah, for sure. Um As the Lord of the Crossroads, Papa Legba will help to find new paths, new opportunities, and remove the roadblocks that stand in the way. However, be rare weary. Weary. Papa Legba is also known as the trickster and is incredibly cunning and wise. Make sure you read the fine print before regreting to the proposition from Papa Legba. Again, double into details.
SPEAKER_03Now it's it's interesting. I don't know if you have in this and if if you do, we can we we could just be out but crossroads you may know in some areas have uh items in the center of this of the road.
SPEAKER_04Yes. Like have you got anything in there about uh Yeah, it will talk about that too. Okay. Um the crossroads considered a no man's land where two worlds collide is a place to summon spirits or according to European tradition, hear the names of those destined to die in the coming year. Many traditions involve going to the crossroads at midnight, especially on nights like Halloween or New Year's Eve to perform rituals. Examples include listening for messages from the dead, seances, or looking to make packs with the spirit world. In the late 1700s and into the mid-1800s in the UK and European and Europe, criminals and those who died by suicide were buried at the crossroads. It was believed that the multiple paths would confuse their ghosts, preventing them from finding their way back to haunt some of their villages. Uh public executions often took place at these junctions to serve as a warning to travelers entering the territory. Now, a crossroads is basically any point where two roads cross each other. Yeah. How do you know you got the right crossroads? No, no, no, you need the one two blocks up. Just I don't know.
SPEAKER_03Or it doesn't matter. Doesn't matter.
SPEAKER_04Doesn't matter. Okay.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, uh what if it was what if like every road had a cross on it? And like there was a cross here and then and then once you get past that, there's another one. Like, and then another one, and then another one.
SPEAKER_04Well, that's kind of like life.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it's right.
SPEAKER_04Well, you got all those decisions you always gotta make. It's like the multiverse.
SPEAKER_03Well, if I mean if you if you wanted to go right and then left, then you just go straight and right in the same way.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. You always end up at the final destination, which is you always end up where you're going.
SPEAKER_03No matter which direction you take.
SPEAKER_04No matter where you are, there you or where you're going, there you are.
unknownExactly.
SPEAKER_04Uh strange creatures known as brags or boggles. Also bogble bogglers. Boggles? Boggles, sorry. Hang around the crossroads in styles at dusk. They entrap unrary travelers, but many of them leave their victims confused or bewildered after having their fun. Northumberland and County Durham in Northeast England, the Headley Cow is one of such beasts. It hangs around in the vicinity of Headley on the hill. As a shapeshifter, it appears in various guises. In one story a poor woman finds a pot on the road filled with gold pieces. She drags it home, but on the way the pot turns into a lump of silver. Which still isn't bad. It's still valuable. She keeps dragging and turns into a chunk of iron. Then a rock. When she gets home, it changes for a final time into the head like cow. Another story relates the tricks that he played on courting couples. Two young men set off heading to meet their girlfriends. They thought they saw their girls up ahead, and no matter how much they uh hurried to catch up, the girl stayed at a distance. Weird laughter rang out.
SPEAKER_03Is that what they sounded like? Forbating? That was the best I could do.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_03I mean, that's the best they could uh that was. That's exactly what I'm saying. Microphone could do.
SPEAKER_04Uh weird laughter rang out, and the men found themselves in a bog.
SPEAKER_03In a bogs, I thought you were going to say.
SPEAKER_04It's a good thing there aren't too many bogs around here. Those sound pleasant to them.
SPEAKER_03They are not fun.
SPEAKER_04They sound like boggy.
SPEAKER_03They are very boggy. Yeah, like they took it in a bog and you just it's like quick quicksand. Bog down, yeah. Muddy quicksand. Yeah. Yeah. I bet you they smell boggy too. I'd say so. I'd say bogs smell like bogs, for sure. Bogs smell? Like bogs.
SPEAKER_04You know how much bugs we've said, and now it just doesn't sound like anything.
SPEAKER_03Bogs. Bogs, bugs. It like boggles the mind. Boggles the mind, indeed.
SPEAKER_04Uh let's see. They found themselves in a bog. Luckily, they managed to escape and ran home. Well, it must not have been a deep bog then. Maybe it was a minor bog.
SPEAKER_03Oh, wait, Fraggle. I was thinking the only bogger rock. No, Fraggruck. I'm sorry. Brain Far, go ahead.
SPEAKER_04Um managed to escape and ran home. Followed all the way home by the headly cow.
SPEAKER_03Very interesting.
SPEAKER_04For creatures so fun, a shape-shifting crossroads must appear like the ideal spot to encounter unwitting victims for their pranks. Uh, other strange creatures uh that show up at the crossroads, Belgian and Romanian folklore. If you are pursued by the shapeshifting dog, Oschart, or blood-drinking Lelace, your only safety is to stand in and exact in the exact center of the crossroads until the creature leaves.
SPEAKER_03So do you stand in the exact center of it, like on one foot, or like it doesn't say, I guess if you want to. Once your body mass is in the exact center, should be okay.
SPEAKER_04But does you can you be close to the exact center, or do you have to figure out the exact sacks?
SPEAKER_03The exact like you have to have a measuring to like hang on. Why are you talking about it? This is this is 50 inches, you know what I mean? Yep. I I don't know. Once we're at our crossroad that pops up, we'll bring a measure tape just to make sure, and then we'll we'll let everyone know if you actually need it or not.
SPEAKER_04So what you should do, if you go to the crossroads, yeah, bring your tape measure, yeah, and a little little marking paint. Exactly. Mark your spots, and then as you're walking around, if the creature shows up, you know where you're you know where to stand.
SPEAKER_03Exactly. And you hear it on Phantom Journeys Project. Next time, exactly. Next time you go to the crossroads, bring measure tape and a little pen just to put it.
SPEAKER_04Uh standing stones were frequently erected at crossroads. Local legends suggest these stones were used to keep the Fey, the fairies, from entering our world through these thin spots.
SPEAKER_03And it makes me wonder. I don't know if you have it here, because I'm I've been really good at calling out on what you have next. I wonder if that's why roundabouts are more round? Well, available than crossroads. Because it's blocking the central. Maybe.
SPEAKER_04I thought I had more in here about things that were in the center, but I guess I don't. But okay, here's another one. The money cat. That sounds promising if you're in a creature, right? In Brittany and parts of the Caribbean, legends describe how a magical black cat can be obtained at cro at the crossroads if you wait there several nights with a specific offering, like a dead hen. Do you have to have a different dead hen every day? I was thinking that we think yellows. Or is your dead hen good for like four nights in a row? Do you really keep it there as well? Do you have to like well? I'm sure you got a Tupperware or something to carry around in.
SPEAKER_03I don't know. Or can you have a fight dead hen?
SPEAKER_04And it doesn't really tell you any money, or you're just getting a magic black cat. That's true. He'll probably eat the dead hen. Oh yeah, and then get food poisoning and die, and then you get a dead magic cat. I don't know what you do with the dead magic cat. Um in Japan, Shimara no Kamil. These gods of crossroads were born when the god Izanagi discarded his clothes after returning from the land of the dead. Statues of Jizo and Doso-jin are often placed at these intersections to ward off evil spirits and epidemics from entering villages. So this guy goes to the crossroads, takes off all his clothes, and they make the statue. I do that, and I'm totally being inappropriate, and I get put in the back of a police car. I'm just saying. I don't think that's fair. Isn't fair.
SPEAKER_03Life isn't fair.
SPEAKER_04I want to be at the crossroads naked, and I don't want to get hassled.
SPEAKER_03True.
SPEAKER_04So, what do you have to do to make a difference at the crossroads? There's a ritual. Ritual? Do we really want to tell people how to do the ritual?
SPEAKER_03Let's tell people. Okay. Yeah, because this is how you go to the crossroads and do a ritual.
SPEAKER_04In Hoodoo, the southern folk magic, there are specific laws to follow if you intend to meet a spirit. Or the cell your soul at the intersection. Don't tell them that we sent you to sell your soul. Um, the rule of three or nine. You must visit the same crossroads for three or nine consecutive mornings or nights, usually just before dawn, or exactly at midnight. So you didn't think I was gonna say midnight, did you?
SPEAKER_03No. But so if you go there three nights in a row, yeah, and it doesn't work. Then you need to stay until nine. Yeah, you you can't if you go to four time it'll like it won't it won't work.
SPEAKER_04It's either three or nine.
SPEAKER_03It's three or nine.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, so you either get lucky and get get what you want at three visits, or you're in it for all nine. Wow. But you don't have to carry around a dead hen. Well, hopefully not for nine days. Well, I take it back. There's an offering. Oh, there is an offering with a hen. The offering, you don't go empty-handed. Common offerings include whiskey, silver coins, or a black hen. This one this one doesn't have to be dead, though. It has to be black. It's got to be, it says black hen. See how it how it's in bold black writing? Yes. That means it has to be black. It has to be a black hen. Or I wouldn't have put it in black, bold black writing. Nope. It has to be dead. I guess it'd have to be probably mostly 80% black. I don't know if it has to be pure black. I and I just threw 80% of that. I don't know where that came from. I don't know. These uh these are left at the four corners or buried in the center. That's why there's always a bump in the center of Crossroads. That's true. People have to be burying shit. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Um I'm gonna put that down to wind. You know, as soon as you said buried.
SPEAKER_04We're in the studio and all of a sudden something moved behind us.
SPEAKER_03And we're the only two in the studio.
SPEAKER_04Um the n oh, maybe I said something wrong about the black hen. Maybe. Maybe maybe it's Papa Legba. But we're not at a crossroads. Or are we maybe there was a crossroads here a hundred years ago. That's true. Technically we're no, we're at T junction. Never mind. Yeah, we're cool. Papa Legba doesn't have time for T junctions. We're only the only crossroads. Uh, and then the instrument tuning. As seen in the Robert Johnson legend, you hand your guitar or fiddle to the figure you meet. He tunes it, plays a song, and hands it back. From that moment on, you possess unnatural mastery. It doesn't have to be a guitar, it'd just be whatever you're at. Would you really want to be a master of the harmonica?
unknownI don't know.
SPEAKER_03Or like like a banjo or something.
SPEAKER_04Would you really? I'd rather be a master of the harmonica.
SPEAKER_03Well, you know, honestly, uh if if I was given choice if you were given the choice of probably banjo. Any musical instrument that you are going to master.
SPEAKER_04Any musical instrument. Anything. And I you're talking to a person that has zero musical ability at all. I can't even carry a tune. I can't unpitch, I can't even carry a pitch trying to sing. I'm horrible. Okay. Okay. I would want to be. I'd have to say probably good uh electric guitar.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I'd probably say a bass.
SPEAKER_04Girls go crazy for the guitar. That's true.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Um not that you want girls as you're married. No, I'm married. I don't want to even look at them anymore.
SPEAKER_04So you uh so uh non-musical, you'd want to be writing?
SPEAKER_03Yes. I mean I am pretty good. I just I need follow-through. That's my problem.
SPEAKER_04Let's see, what would I want? I don't know. I'd have to really think about it. I mean, if I'm gonna go through that much effort, potentially I have to get a black hen and and mark off on my calendar nine consecutive nights at midnight. I don't know. I mean I'm already I'm already gorgeous.
SPEAKER_03You might need nine hands just in case, too.
SPEAKER_04Oh. Because otherwise maybe that's like the bribery at the end. You're like, here's the fee, and then here's a little h-hom-zon, you know what I'm saying? Can I get a little bit more or something, something?
SPEAKER_03I have I have nine dead hands for you. But the problem is this is the most recent. Go to one. The other ones are eight days old, seven days old. And that's not my fault. You should have been here sooner.
SPEAKER_04You would have gotten a fresher hand. Think about that. You and your rules are three or nine. Um ultimately the crossroads represent the human experience of power. Standing at the center of a cross is a metaphor for the present moment. You have the power to choose a new direction, but you also must acknowledge the weight of leaving your old path behind. Do you find yourself at the crossroads? Do you have a courage to make the change that will possibly find you fame, wealth, or even power? Would you make the deal with the devil? Question mark? What if you don't believe in the devil? Well, then you gotta deal with Papa Legba. Well, that's true. That's true. You gotta make a deal with somebody.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. You always gotta make a deal with somebody.
SPEAKER_04What if it was the guy from the 70s TV show uh Let's Make a Deal? I don't remember his name, but it was the old game show where people dressed up in costumes. Yeah, I don't remember that.
SPEAKER_03They had to pick curtain one. Oh, you mean blowing date or something?
SPEAKER_04No, you you go on, you're they all the all the contestants had to be in a costume, and he would come down, and you could have what's behind curtain number one, or be what's in front of you on this little box. And you know, was it people behind the cords or no so the thought was that one of them was a good prize, one of them was not a good prize, or if you got a choice of like three, you might get a really good prize, a bad prize, and then you get like a stinker, like oh okay. There'd be a donkey sitting there, and all of a sudden you got a donkey.
SPEAKER_03Um I don't I don't know. I've never no I've never heard of the case.
SPEAKER_04I'm just I was just saying, what if he's the one at the crossroads? Well take that game out of it, just a game a game show host.
SPEAKER_03Like uh man from from uh what's that TV show? Precious Right. No, the um the the one where you ask questions like and says Oh um oh uh you mean um Family Feud.
SPEAKER_04Yes. And um What's his name? He's got a big mustache, I can tell you that. Yes. Um really funny guy. Why am I always blanking on names? This is what happens when you turn to turn into my age. You have a hard time remembering names. Steve Hur. Steve Harvey Harvey, yes. I knew it. I knew it all the time. Steve Harvey, I said it. I said it, Steve Harvey. Yeah. You want to see Harvey? I don't know. If you came to the crossroads and Steve Harvey walked up, I'd be like, nah, I'm good. You're not taking this serious, I'm good.
SPEAKER_03Oh, you take it seriously, he doesn't make a joke out with you, but no, I would, I don't know.
SPEAKER_04I I don't know. First of all, I don't know what I would go to the crossroads asking for at this point in my life. Hey, I'm Chris Hansen. Oh crap. Oh no! Crossover to catch a predator. I don't know who these people are. Oh my goodness. Okay, that would be bad. Uh that would be the one person I would not want to meet at the crossroads. That's true.
SPEAKER_03Well, I mean, you know. Once you're good, you're, you know. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04I don't know. I mean, it's not like that I don't wish for things to be different or better. I just think I'm at an age now where I'm happy with who I am and where I'm at. Yeah. Well, I mean, I mean it'd be nice to have a little bit of retirement put together, put aside. You know, it'd be nice if things were a little bit more peaceful. It'd be nice if things didn't cost so much. But you know what? I don't think it's my job to sell my soul for everybody else's benefit. Does that sound selfish?
SPEAKER_03That's interesting. That's an interesting way to look at it, really, isn't it? Because yes, you're selling your soul to be the best at something, but everyone else in the world is benefiting from it because they're listening to that.
SPEAKER_04Well, I didn't mean it that way, but now you mentioned it that way. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. I mean it. It's just if I was to wish for world peace, why am I selling my soul for world peace that benefits everybody else?
SPEAKER_03Very true. But if you think about it, like these musical genius, geniuses that came from the crossroads and and had these like magical powers to make fantastic movie movies, maybe, but also music. Music, yeah, and then people are listening to it for like 70 years afterwards. Is that a kind of like a trickle-down from the devil? So you're you're literally pulling hundreds of songs from the last 70 years that are devilishly made, technically.
SPEAKER_04But supposedly the devil was a musician. He he was the angel of music. Right. The fallen angel that became the devil was the mu the musician of heaven.
SPEAKER_03Would he play a little harp? Um, I think he could play anything he wanted. Well, you know what that's good.
SPEAKER_04So it's it's it's interesting how that kind of ties in too, because that's what I at least that's what I remember being told.
SPEAKER_03That would make a little bit more sense as to why musical are more willing to Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Instead of just like a million dollars or whatever.
SPEAKER_04Right.
SPEAKER_03It sounds a bit more like a reason, you know.
SPEAKER_04But you know, people that do that do the the bidding or the the deal for a million dollars could be just as plentiful.
SPEAKER_03It's just that you just don't know who they are because they they're not nobody else well, I guess people would benefit technically, but not really in the long run. I mean
SPEAKER_04I'm sure a stockbroker works hard enough and whatnot. The Wolf of Wall Street, I'm sure, sold his soul somewhere along the line.
SPEAKER_03I wonder if you here's something for you. In other way, every dollar bill or every money or coin made has a number on it. Yeah. And it's probably I don't know what number it's up to or whatever, Courtney, but what if you wish to do it? I'm sure. Yeah, I'm sure. Oh absolutely. I'm sure like if you ask for a million dollars, well all the numbers have to be Sequential? Like future istick. Oh. So if any anyone ever counts them, there's numbers that never were actually printed.
SPEAKER_04Well, see, there you go.
SPEAKER_03And they're like, how the fuck do they exist? They're real.
SPEAKER_04They must be fake, then. They're not. If they're not registered, they must be fake.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Then you get arrested for uh some kind of like theft of uh government property or something.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. See, there's always details. What's that? Futuristic of money that has not been created yet. But yet they're absolutely authentic.
SPEAKER_04Same thing if you have a time machine. You go to the future, collect a hundred bucks from an ATM and bring them back. Is it still spendable? I mean, as long as they look the same. Yeah, the only thing that's different, let's say, is the serial number.
SPEAKER_03The serial number hasn't been recorded for 100 years.
SPEAKER_04But the bank doesn't the bank doesn't know that. Yeah. So they just are going to take your $100. Yeah, they take it easy. But somewhere along the line, someone's going to get hit for uh counterfeiting.
SPEAKER_03Because if you find a $100 bill from 100 years ago, that's in pristine condition. Yeah. You're like, how the fuck did this last 100 years? Well it because you wouldn't go into that much detail for like 100 bucks. You wouldn't go into that much detail for a dollar. But but yeah. If for some reason it got like scientifically studied, then like how the hell did this bill last 100 years without even deteriorating from air?
SPEAKER_04From oxygen from Because I had it in a box.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Anyways, that's just a weird thing. My brain is when I'm gonna do it.
SPEAKER_04Okay, so uh this is a this is a little thing away from the subject, also that's always baffled me. I may have mentioned on the show before, I don't remember. But if you have a time machine, yes, and you go back, let's say 20,000 years, yes, pick up a branch off this ground, bring that branch back to the present. Yeah. So you've only been to you, I've only been gone maybe two seconds.
SPEAKER_03So I'm only two seconds technically, and the way I see it is you may have just killed everyone that has ever existed past that point.
SPEAKER_04It's possible.
SPEAKER_03Yes.
SPEAKER_04But let's say I didn't. Yes. Let's say that wasn't a uh let's just say that piece of wood had nothing to do with future events. Right. And I have that piece of wood um tested for age.
SPEAKER_03The uh the uh Yeah, it would probably be brand new.
SPEAKER_04Would it yeah, would it come up as being new? Or would it come up as being a few years?
SPEAKER_03I apparently think it would come up as either brand new, like it fell off the tree or whatever, like maybe 30 years ago or something. Um or they would know it as something being from 20,000 years ago because of because of the type of bacteria or the type of the lack of pollutants in the air or something.
SPEAKER_04Exactly. Yeah. I'd see that's but that if I had a time machine, that's what I would do.
SPEAKER_03I'd just go get a piece of wood from 20,000 years ago. Go back to 20,000 years ago and get some wood?
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_03No. Um I don't want to get it.
SPEAKER_04I don't want to go back far enough that I'm getting stomped by a dinosaur as soon as I step out of the time machine. True. But also I don't want to get some kind of major disease. So I have no I I have under those COVID masks on that, the N95 masks.
SPEAKER_03One thing I'd love to do just for fun. If I had a time machine, I'd go back to 1970 something when Star Wars Force came out, right? 77. 77, when all the toys came out, and I'd buy like a couple of toys like in the box for staying.
SPEAKER_04The hard to find ones.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, and for like 20 bucks or whatever the hell they are 35 cents or something like that. Bring them back to the store and go, listen, this has been in my attic for god now so long.
SPEAKER_04My dad had these kids, and his mom took them away, put them in the attic, and he wore that on here, are they with anything?
SPEAKER_03And they're all these like, oh my god, this is Yoda from his force whatever, you know, and they're like, Is that something?
SPEAKER_04I would take I I would take it to uh like Sotherby's or something and have it auctioned off. Yeah. Because someone's gonna pay a million dollars for that. Oh, absolutely, yeah.
SPEAKER_03It's so it's so weird that like something that you would have bought in the 60s or something for five cents or ten cents magazines, whatever. Right. They'll sell for like fucking millions just.
SPEAKER_04There was a guy, there was a guy on uh on eBay that paid six hundred thousand dollars or something astronomical like that for a Cheeto that was shaped like a gorilla.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, you know what's funny, and not to advertise because he doesn't need it. Fucking gold. You ever see the thing on on um Netflix? Golden, I think it's called.
SPEAKER_04No.
SPEAKER_03Um there's a uh a businessman by the name of Golden, and he does auctions online. Okay. And he has all his people go out and they like you know, find items and bring them up. Cheetos that are shaped like girls. Like uh Cheetos that are shaped like uh uh Pokemon things, they sold one for like God knows how many. Why are you paying money for like people buying like Pokemon cards for like millions?
SPEAKER_04Oh they're just because we have a uh theft ring in LA right now from people getting the sporting uh sports cards and they're not getting the baseball cards or whatever they're gonna do for the Pokemon and they're taking them all.
SPEAKER_03So crazy. It's like how is that still a thing? Collectibles are so interesting. I really love that TV show, and if you're into that, go check it out. Uh I'm not really advertising this guy, but he doesn't need it, but trust me, it's really fun, really fun. Really nice guy as well. Um I've been to the crossroads, though.
SPEAKER_04You've been to a crossroads, it's been a long time ago, but I've I've seen crossroads. I've made I've made the trip a couple of times to the crossroads. Not to the point where I'm sold my soul, yeah. But I've got to that point, it's like I can't go on the way I'm going, I need something different, and I made the change, I made the choice to do something different.
SPEAKER_03Oh, we've all done cross rolls, that's for sure. And then recently I hit one myself, but you know, we'll do that another day. Yeah. But um yeah. I think I think that's a really interesting episode. Um I do love hearing about the stories of all the blues players and like the down or look kind of people.
SPEAKER_04Do you think Robert Johnson sold us all, or do you think he just went someplace and practiced 24 hours a day?
SPEAKER_03So many people were like overnight successes, like they'd be really shit one day, and then you go to it. The next day they show up and suddenly they're like fucking blues masters.
SPEAKER_04But yeah, I mean the thing was is this guy was a poor player, yeah, and then a little over a year later, and there's the guitar masters are having trouble playing what he's playing. Yeah, that's like that's that's a little bit more than just practicing 24 hours a day for a year.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it's kind of like I don't know, is I mean for you. I mean, unless you fucking like put every hour into that guitar for a year, yeah. I could see see some weird shit happening, but like even the likes of Jimi Hendrix playing with his his teeth or painted behind his back, or like you know, the guy as high as a kite doing it too. He was so good that oh my god, man.
SPEAKER_04I'm with you. Yeah you know who I miss? He didn't he died a lot longer, a lot older than being 27, but you know who I miss? Prince. Yeah, yeah. I I I I that's my emotional stuff.
SPEAKER_03I I wouldn't I remember a song, but I wouldn't I never I couldn't name a song for you.
SPEAKER_04The Red Corvette. Oh my gosh. You need to you need to delve into some print stuff. Yeah. It's the one thing that from growing up that I wish I had done back in the 80s was gone to a Prince concert. Of course my parents probably wouldn't have let me, but that's the one thing I would have. That's my one thing I would have liked to Okay. If I had a time machine, I'd go back and see a Prince Machine. Yeah, Prince concert. Back in like 1987, 86, where he was really on top of it.
SPEAKER_03True. One one thing I'd like to do like that was working, uh I'd like to do an episode on is Dave a Bowie. Oh yeah? Yeah, especially with the occult. Oh, you know, he's very deep into the annoying enough to. Oh really? It's almost scary, yeah. It's it's very interesting. I think that's the one episode I'll write up pretty soon.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, that sounds I'm I'm into it. Let's do it.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_04So but yeah, that was cool.
SPEAKER_03Babalegba. Baba legba. Is that like Baba Yaga?
SPEAKER_04Uh no. But something came up just the other day where I had explained Baba Yaga. Yeah, uh, isn't that that hot in the in the forest or something? Isn't that the Russian um?
SPEAKER_03We think of two things.
SPEAKER_04In Baba Yaga, the Russian uh psychic that just died not too long ago?
SPEAKER_03I'm thinking of something else on.
SPEAKER_04Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_03The the the the the healthy thing, the cottage in the woods that stands up as legs.
SPEAKER_04The building that stands up with legs? I don't know the name of the.
SPEAKER_03That's gonna be an episode too, so yes.
SPEAKER_04Um I don't know if I'd be really scared of a building with legs.
SPEAKER_03Well, it's it's the fact that once you're inside it, it doesn't matter.
SPEAKER_04Oh, well, I'm uh if I was uh like walking through the woods, came to a clearing and there's a cabin sitting there, and all of a sudden it just stands up. Yeah. I would run if it chased me. Oh yeah, of course. But I think I wouldn't be so scared I wouldn't pull out my camera first and get a picture or two.
SPEAKER_03True. There's actually a there's for some reason that reminds me, there's a good movie on Netflix called War Machine.
SPEAKER_04War Machine. Springs to life. Opens up one eager eye. 99 Love Balloons. Oh my god, no. That's that's a theme from uh one of the lyrics. War Machine Springs to Life. Oh, yeah. Opens up one eager eye. Da da da da da Captain Kirk, da da da da 99 Love Balloons.
SPEAKER_03Flow by the There you go. Uh yeah, interesting. Anyway, uh good movie? Uh War Machine. It's it's about like training camps, some guys trying to be a ranger or something like that, and he's in some training camp or whatever, and suddenly there's an attack by aliens. But the aliens are mechs. Oh. And they have to sub they have to survive.
SPEAKER_04You know what? I did see the preview for them.
SPEAKER_03It's actually really it's in it's oh, it's not bad. It's good. It's not well, that's good. I mean, I don't want to watch something that's bad. Yeah, it's not bad, it's not that's for sure, that's for sure. Alright, well, I think we leave it there, Ken.

Yeah, talking to the people.
SPEAKER_03Interesting.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Last thing you should ever do is blame the don't blame the people.
SPEAKER_03Blame the game. The game. I think they're the game, they're the player.
SPEAKER_04Don't, don't, don't, yeah, don't hate the game. Don't hate the player, hate the game. Yeah. Yeah. Something like that. Something like that. Just saying. If you've met with the devil, tell us about it.
