Hey guys its Dr. Spencer from NurseFirstNP. You are listening to N-Deep with NCLEX NextGen weekly videos to guide you on what to and how to study to pass NCLEX NextGen on your first attempt.
In this weeks video, I am going to be talking about… Pharmacology…Me and pharmacology have a bitter sweet relationship. I had to take pharmacology twice in nursing school but now that I know it, it has made my nursing career so much easier while working on the floor.
The Physiological Integrity portion of the NCLEX Next-Gen specifically addresses pharmacological and parenteral therapies, and it accounts for 16% of NCLEX test questions.
Remember, NCLEX tests your understanding of the information not just your ability to memorize facts. And in order to pass NCLEX you need to be able to think like a nurse…
So lets get you to think/study like a nurse.
when studying medications, you should first study by breaking down each system and its associated medications. When looking at the systems you should look at the adverse effects, contraindications, side effects, interactions, expected actions and outcomes of the medications and key techniques in medication administration.
In this Podcast we will specifically talk about Medications that affect Airway, breathing, and circulation. This same format can be applied to all of the medications but for NCLEX- NextGen you better make sure you know the medications that affect Airway, Breathing, and Circulation. Oh yea, also know about your pain medications because those are medications that can affect your airway and breathing.
When studying medications affecting the airway such as those used for lower respiratory issues like for asthma, bronchitis and COPD…make sure you know which medications are used for bronchodilation such as beta 2 adrenergics (albuterol) and those that are used to treat inflammation such as glucocorticoids ( beclomethasone dipropionate).
When studying these meds, its also good to know when you should give one versus the other.
For example, do you give the glucocorticoid to someone is having an active asthma attack or do you give the beta-2 adrenergic??
Would you tell them to use the beta adrenergic first and then the glucocorticoid??
How would you instruct the patient to use the medications?
For instance, if giving an inhaler..how should the patient use the inhaler?? What should the patient do after using the inhaler and what does it mean if the patient is having to use the inhaler more than the prescribed dosing?
When studying these medications to make sure you understand the information and not just memorizing it, it is important that you always ask yourself why would you choose one medication over the other.
Patient teaching is very important guys….Make sure you know side effects of the medications and be able to tell your patient warning signs and what to do if they experience side effects and when to seek medical attention.
For example, if your patient is on an inhaled glucocorticoid what instructions would you give them to help prevent some of the side effects of using an inhaler?
As it relates to respiratory medications addressing upper respiratory tract issues such as the common cold, acute rhinitis, and allergic rhinitis. The same applies.
You should first classify the medications based on its expected outcome. Remember the purpose of each medications based on its class…like whether its used as an anti-tussive, expectorant, mucolytic, or decongestant.
Also, think about what will happen if your patient used too much of a medication as in overdose. What are the antidotes?
Like if your patient was on an anti-tussive with opioids what would you do if they had to much…what are some assessment findings you may see.
For instance, if your patient is having a really bad cough and the provider orders a cough syrup with codeine.
What is the antidote for codeine??
When would you have to give the antidote?? Like what would the patient say or what would you see?
When it comes to the respiratory system and studying the medications you want to make sure you study heavy on what are some of the assessment finding that you want to look for that would indicate if the patient is tolerating the medication as well as if the medication is working for the patient…..
Okay guys I think you guys get the point on how to study respiratory medications in preparation for the NCLEX next-gen. Next, week we will be going over how to study cardiac medications for NCLEX next- gen.
