Matt Rutherford has already accomplished what few sailors would ever dare to attempt. He has circumnavigated the Americas twice, including navigating the treacherous waters of the Northwest Passage.
Now, he is taking on an unprecedented challenge: attempting the first-ever solo, nonstop and completely unassisted circumnavigation of the Arctic Ocean.
But this journey is about more than making history. Through his nonprofit, the Ocean Research Project, Matt is sailing in the name of science while raising awareness of the growing effects of climate change across the Arctic.
We caught up with him shortly after his departure from Greenland, just days into the expedition, to hear about the challenge ahead, the mission behind the voyage and what it takes to set out alone into one of the most unforgiving regions on Earth.
