Simmeren Thomas lived thousands of miles away from the accuser who caused her death. Why? Why was the biggest question? Why does it be a lot of the colour? This is the story of Cimarron Thomas. Cimarron Elise Thomas was born on July 7, 2005, in Butte, Montana, to her parents Benjamin and Stephanie Thomas. She also had a nine-year-old sister named Adara, whom she was very close with. Cimarron was in the seventh grade at Brewston Middle School, where she was a member of the volleyball team. She was a happy-go-lucky and kind young girl who loved playing the violin, chatting on social media with her friends, and listening to Katy Perry. Cimarron dreamed of one day becoming a murder detective. And her teachers described her as being bright and hardworking. She was also one of their favorite students. At some point, Cimarron and her family had moved to Brewston Mills, West Virginia from Montana. Then, one day in May of 2018, 12-year-old Cimarron was chatting on Snapchat with her friends when she received a new friend request from a name that she did not recognize. The other person's name was Sarah, so Cimarron decided to accept the friend request, believing that it was likely a girl around her age. For a while, they chatted back and forth about typical things that 12-year-old girls talk about. They then started talking about body image issues, and somehow, after heavily complimenting Cimarron on her figure, Sarah was able to convince the young girl to send her over a topless photo. As soon as Cimarron did this, she learned who Sarah really was. Sarah was not a young girl. In fact, this person was not a girl at all. It was a man who was catfishing Cimarron, and he told her that he now had a nude photo of her with her face. The catfish then told her that he was going to post this photo online for the entire world to see if she did not comply with the request that he was about to make. So eventually, the scared 12-year-old fearing the worst, decided to comply with his demands. And she sent over more exploitative images of herself. Once Simarron had done as she was instructed, the catfish told her that she had done a good job and said that she could now block him. He then promised to delete the photos that he had of her and reassured her that everything was fine now. So Cimarron went to bed and then got up for school the following morning. But the 12-year-old would not tell a single soul about what had happened the night prior. She thought it was over. There was no more need to worry. Unfortunately, she was very wrong. Three nights later, on May 10th, 2018, the Catfish was able to contact Cimron yet again, this time on a different profile. He told her, I want to play one more time. The 12-year-old begged him to leave her alone, but he told Cimarron that if she wanted that, she would have to send him even more photos. He also told her that he had not yet deleted those nude photos that he promised he would. At one point, Cimarron even told the perpetrator that she was going to call the police if he did not leave her alone, but he just told her that he didn't care. The catfish then demanded that Cimarron take some inappropriate photos of her younger sister. Cimarron refused, saying, please not her. When he insisted, Cimarron told the catfish that she rather kill herself than involve her little sister. He responded by sending Cimarron a countdown clock and then said good luck and goodbye. He also sent another message saying, I am posting by Ben Thomas, Cimarron's father, first. He should see the pics first. You will see what happens by tonight. I tried to be nice by offering to delete them for you. After that, the conversation had stopped. Three minutes later, the young girl walked into her parents' bedroom and closed the door behind her. Her mother and father weren't home that evening as they were out on a date. Moments later, Cimarron's younger sister went rushing to her parents' bedroom door after she heard what she believed to be a balloon popping. But it wasn't a balloon at all. Cimarron had actually grabbed her father's gun and shot herself. Her little sister immediately contacted 911, and shortly after, Cimarron was transported to the hospital, where a little after midnight, on May 11, 2018, she would be pronounced dead. Cimarron's family had no idea why the once happy little girl had chosen to end her life, and her death left them not only devastated, but also confused. Cimarron's father, 39-year-old ex-Army veteran Ben Thomas, was particularly torn up about his daughter's death. And only a year and a half later, in January of 2020, he also decided to take his own life. It wouldn't be until a year after that tragedy that Cimarron's family would finally discover what it was that had caused her to take herself out of the world in the first place. This came in April of 2021, after Northern Ireland police contacted them. They informed Cimarron's family that during an investigation, they had made a shocking discovery. Authorities had found chat logs between Cimarron and a man whom they suspected of extreme sexual exploitation. This man's name was Alexander McCartney, and he was a 26-year-old man whom authorities believed had targeted as many as 3,500 children on 64 different devices between 2013 and 2019. Alexander, who still lived at home with his parents in Newry, Ireland, had saved chat logs between him and Cimarron as well as multiple other girls, like some sort of sick trophies. Now this disgusting man had a history of sexual deviance, which had begun when he was just 17 years old. And five years prior to Cimarron's family being notified about him, back in 2016, Alexander's internet had been flagged for viewing illegal material, which resulted in a raid of his parents' home where he lived. At that time, a large number of electronic devices had been seized. Police took eight computer towers, four laptops, eight tablets, and nine mobile phones. On these, they found thousands of images depicting children. But at this point, police were unaware of Alexander's catfishing scheme and no victims had come forward. So even though he was arrested, he made his bail shortly after. And despite now having the attention of the police, and despite his bail conditions, Alexander would continue to manipulate and harass young girls online. He had replaced his phones and his laptops, which police had previously seized, in order to do this. Then in 2019, police in Scotland had contacted Northern Ireland police to report that a 13-year-old girl had been groomed by an adult suspect, which then led to Alexander's arrest again. When police raided his home this time, he was in the middle of catfishing yet another young girl as he had his Snapchat open. Authorities seized 64 different devices from Alexander's parents' home. They contained tens of thousands of images of underage girls who were being blackmailed into performing sex acts in photos. Alexander had targeted young girls between the ages of 12 and 16, most of them who were questioning their sexuality. So he was specifically looking for girls who he thought would be too scared to come forward to police or their parents. Since they had just sent nude photos to a stranger and had likely not come out to those close around them yet, either. So Alexander had set up numerous fake profiles, pretending to be girls named Chloe, Hannah, and Sarah. After doing this, he contacted preteen girls and would subsequently send them a picture of himself. Of course, it wasn't actually a picture of him, but of another young girl. Some of his photos even being of other young girls whom he had previously extorted. Alexander would then lovebomb them, telling them just how beautiful they were. Once he'd gained their trust, he would pressure these girls into sending him topless photos. Then he would reveal that he was a catfish and blackmail them. Authorities had found previously deleted chat logs showing a pattern of manipulation of these young girls. He would pressure them into sending nude photos of themselves, but anytime he received them, he would act like he wasn't satisfied. So he demanded more and more, and whenever the girls refused to send him any further photos, he would threaten to post what he already had publicly on the internet. Police additionally discovered that in the notes section of Alexander's phone, he had saved a prepared conversation that he would copy and paste to many of the children. One part of this said, Alright, I used a fake camera snap app. I have your face pick and nudes. You are gonna do as I say for tonight, and then I'll leave after. But if you don't, I'm uploading everything online for everyone to see. Understand? Since these messages had been sent via Snapchat too, Alexander had been able to view the girls' locations. So he told some of them that he would come to their schools and spread the pictures around. Another child was even told by Alexander that he was going to have people come to her home and RAPE her. To further degrade some of his victims, Alexander had even asked some of them to urinate and defecate on themselves or the floor and then handle the feces. In several cases, he even threatened the children with showing the pictures to other pedophiles. Or he would force his victims to involve family members, pets, and objects. Multiple videos that police seized showed Alexander's victims pleading with him and breaking down to tears. A few children told the monster that they were going to harm or kill themselves. But he just replied back that he did not care. One girl repeatedly told him that she would end herself and that her mum was already dying from cancer. He replied, I do not give a shit about you or your mum. When authorities had searched Alexander's home following his most recent arrest, they also found a handwritten note. This note was to his mother and father, and it explained that when he was 15 years old, he had been the victim of a catfish, who had manipulated him into sending nude photos, then had blackmailed him. The letter suggested that this was what made Alexander do the same thing to these girls. Also, according to Alexander, the person who had catfished him was actually the one who was named Sarah. And he had made him go out there and get nude images of girls. Police asked him why someone else would possibly do that, and Alexander's answer was that they were probably just lazy and needed someone else to do their dirty work. Of course, the investigators did not believe this nonsense story at all. It was also discovered that when Alexander had been asked by some of his victims why he was doing this to them, he made up a complete lie, saying that his parents were in prison for SAing him, and that was how he dealt with it. Other times he would be a little more honest and tell his victims, I'm just messed up and into weird stuff. Or, I just get this urge where I like to be in full control sexually. Now Alexander McCartney would be described by his former friends as a bit of a loner and kind of a weirdo who was super interested in computers. Yet they said he was also someone they would never think to be such a predator. Following Alexander's arrest, he would admit to 185 charges involving 70 different children. He also admitted to a charge of manslaughter in relation to Cimarron's death. Originally, police in America and Cimarron's family wanted Alexander extradited back to the US so that he could face charges there as well. But unfortunately, that was not possible. However, his case was still one of the biggest criminal indictments in Northern Ireland's history. He would be sentenced to life in prison for his crimes, with a minimum of 20 years behind bars before he's possibly eligible for parole. Which in my opinion is still really not long enough. In a victim impact statement, Cimarron's grandparents would say, Our lives will never be the same again. It has robbed us of many, many years with Simarron and with Ben, in the lives we had planned with them. We don't get to see Simarron graduate from school or attend a prom. We will never get to see Ben walk her down the aisle on her wedding day or to meet her children. We will never get to have the family holiday that we planned, just a few days before Cimarron's death. We have been robbed of these memories and our lives have been changed forever. Cimarron's funeral was held on Saturday, May 19, 2018, at the Tomblin funeral home in Elkins. She was then cremated. Headed by Cimarron's childhood friend Ashton, the girl's family and friends have held multiple runs in honor of Cimarron and her father Ben. These have helped to raise thousands of dollars that have been donated to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Well, thank you for listening to Cimarron's story today. Alexander knew exactly what he was doing, and he had learned to perfectly manipulate thousands of children over the years, all while getting away with it because they were too scared to come forward. It's heartbreaking to think that Cimarron thought that the only way out of this terrible situation was to take her own life.
