Two Guys Try To Beat The Oscars Odds
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Oscars season turns smart people into coin flippers, and we are no exception. We sit down with our ballots open and our confidence shrinking by the minute, then make the call anyway: our final predictions for Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Director, and Best Picture. Along the way we argue the cases for the films and performances that feel like front runners, the ones that might sneak up late, and the reasons our “sure thing” picks keep changing as the Academy Awards buzz shifts.
We also keep it grounded in what’s actually playing for real moviegoers right now. We celebrate a strong New Zealand box office result for Holy Days, give love to local storytelling, and share what we’re hearing from audiences walking out of My Name Is Party. On the new release side, we hit a quick guide to Cold Storage as a Liam Neeson and Joe Keery horror comedy, plus a limited release pick for art lovers with Turner and Constable. We even make time for a classic movie spotlight with Clint Eastwood’s The Outlaw Josey Wales, because sometimes the best way to reset your movie brain is to watch a great film on a big screen.
Then we zoom out to the movie industry question that affects everything: the theatrical window. A major studio is reportedly slowing down how fast movies hit streaming services, and we unpack why that change could help cinemas survive and help audiences remember what a theatrical release is supposed to feel like. That leads straight into our excitement for Project Hail Mary with Ryan Gosling, a sci fi crowd pleaser getting rave reviews and promising practical filmmaking that sounds made for theaters.

Welcome And Oscar Show Setup
SPEAKER_00Eat, sleep, movie, repeat, repeat, a podcast on all things movies with Brent Harbour and Industry Insider Ross Church House.
SPEAKER_01Hello, young Ross. G'day, young Brent. How are you, by the man? Very good, thank you. I'm kind of I've been pouring over these Oscar predictions. I know you and I gonna talk about it shortly, but I've been pouring over it, and I think I've basically got every single one wrong. So yeah.
SPEAKER_02Every permutation, every calculation has been done, every flip of the coin. That's that's pretty much where I'm at as well. I uh and I'm and I know I've already submitted my numbers, but I may change them before the end. Okay, so uh let's let's just see how we go. Anyway, yeah, so everything else going all right at your end, sir?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it's it's all good. Looking forward to what the Oscars bring. And I and I haven't checked yet to see whether I won the prediction last week. So let's get into it. Excellent.
Kiwi Box Office Surprise Wins
New Releases And Quick Reviews
SPEAKER_02All right, well, uh, welcome along, folks, to Eat Sleep Movie Repeat, your home of fine film from around the world at Leto Cinemas Hamilton and Cafe Cinemas Kerry Kerry, right here in Little Old New Zealand. The show's about uh movies and things that are coming your way, and news and views and all that sort of stuff. So um we're just gonna talk about movies. We're not gonna try and uh tell you how terrible things are right now in the world, as things seem to be getting doomier and slightly gloomier. It's uh no room for e-or here, folks. So uh we're gonna get on with our special Oscar show. But before we do that, Brent, we are gonna have to do a bit of a speed run through the week's films and of course our predictions. So let's crack on. Okay, so last week we did the prediction for the Kiwi Made comedy holidays. Um it was a sort of hilarious and heartwarming story set in the 70s. It's got a great stellar cast with Judy Davis, Maria Margles, um, and a couple of other actors as well. And it's all about a young guy called Brian who discovers that the nuns are getting their um convent closed and he decides to try and help them by taking them on a road trip across New Zealand. So the prediction we did for that, Brent, I predicted 150,000, you predicted 110,000, uh, which was quite a pragmatic bet. But the film actually went on and kicked us right to the curd because it had$192,000. Excellent result, excellent result for a little Kiwi film. And you know what? It's carried on. People are really enjoying it. So um I'm just gonna say, if you want to go and check out some good Kiwi films, go and check out um the Holy Days movie. And also, while we're on the subject of Kiwi films, go and check out My Name is Party, which started last week. That film is doing really well. So far, it um I can't tell you what the box office is off the top of my head, but I know that already this new week, and it's week two, it's outperforming its week one result, and that is the very rare feat indeed. And I have literally had people coming in and watching the film and then coming out and shedding a tear, and they're so overwhelmed and so impressed by the film. It's all about family and the heart. Um, and the opera takes a back seat, but yeah. Go check it out. That's cool. So this means you got a win. Oh, mate, I did. I got a win. Thank you for rubbing that in. Thank you for saying that the way you did. I appreciate it. Yes, folks, I had a win, so it's 2-1 to you. But look, we're gonna have a good week this week because it's all gonna go out the window with the Oscars. Um, but before we get to the Oscars, let's take a talk about uh films and a couple of other little bits and pieces. So the new films this week that have come out, there's a movie called Cold Storage. Uh, this is a Liam Neeson and Joe Kerry film, Joe Kerry from Stranger Things, and it's about a mutating and highly contagious fungus that escapes from a sealed government facility, and two young employees, whose job it is to look after the cold storage, um, have to try and save the world. And of course, this wonderful grizzled bioterror operative who's basically seen it all played by Liam Neeson, doing what Liam Neeson does best, comes in to try and save humanity. And look, it's it's just a horror comedy, R16, a lot of good fun. So if you're looking for something that is a absolutely leave your brain at the door film, this is the film for you, Brad. So moving on, we've got a movie. Uh, this will be on limited release around the country. It's a movie from the company Exhibition on Screen. It features Turner and Constable, um, two of Britain's greatest painters, um, who were born within a year or each other and had a very intense rivalry because they were both landscape painters, um, and they reflected a changing world and also the changing style of landscape painting. Um, so that's a good film. If you're into art, Brent, or if anybody's into art, that is probably worth looking. And it will be limited, so you might have to hunt around for it. But that's it's on screen at uh at my cinema for sure.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I'd like to see a bit of an art film, especially with that with landscapes, the painted the other one. Not very well. Not up to their standard, but I've done it.
SPEAKER_02No, look, my finger painting is off the chain. So if you're if you're folks, if you want some finger painting, just reach out to me. I'll I'll do some paintings and send it to you.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that unicorn that's on your wall behind you is amazing.
Classic Western Night Returns
Predicting Reminders Of Him
SPEAKER_02Um okay, this uh there's a nice uh romantic kind of film. Um look, this is another film from best-selling author Colleen Hoover, uh, who has produced a lot of these sort of romance books. So Reminders of Him is the latest film that's come out. Uh, we had one not uh that long ago last year, uh its name's escaping me, but uh, and then there was the one that caused all the controversy with Blake Lively. Um, It Ends With Us, that was the first movie that came out. Now, this has been a bit of a diminishing return. Um, Reminders of Him um may or may not do well, and we're going to predict on Reminders of Him, but just to give you a quick overview, when the first one came out, it did 853 grand in its first week. But the second one that came out last year in October only did 213,000 in its first week. So this one could this this one could be up, could be down, but we'll give it a guess on that in a minute. Okay, so um moving on from the I guess the sublime to the ridiculous, um, one of the things I love to do, and because we're celebrating our 90th year here in operating cinemas um in Northam, um, not me personally, I'm I'm actually not that old, but every month we're dropping a classic movie in, and this month we're dropping in um a great Clint Eastwood wested called The Outlaw Josie Wales. Okay, uh I think of Todd Bahida was like 1976 or something, maybe '79, this movie came out, and Clint Eastwood directed it, and it's about it's sort of set just after the American Civil War. And Clint, who plays Josie Wales, he's a farmer, and these uh Union soldiers attack and kill his wife and son. And so, of course, Clint does what he does best. He becomes an outlaw and he hunts down the men who killed his family, and then he hooks up with a bunch of other people who are going around trying to right wrongs, etc. Clint Eastwood made a lot of good movies and spaghetti westerns and stuff. I think Outlaw Josie Wales is one of his best. And um, I think that if I hope, I mean, we put these things on and we do hope that people come. We get a lot of grizzled old men who walk in and say they don't make them like they used to, and you got any westerns. Um, so I'm really hoping that those people, myself included, get out this weekend and come and check that out. Because um, you know, these classic movies are are often really, really good. And we've got a couple other big ones coming, which we'll talk about closer at the time throughout. But every month we're gonna drop one in, so we'll chat about it each time we do it. Alrighty, so we'll just get through this speed round of what do you think reminders of humans gonna do, Brett? What do you think that'll do, the box hoppers?
SPEAKER_01Oh, okay. Well, it seems to be on the downward spiral, doesn't it? I don't know. Is uh is it really the mood of the world to see something like this at the moment? Or deny. I could be absolutely wrong, but I'm gonna go for 189,000.
Studios Slow Down Streaming Windows
SPEAKER_02Okay, 189,000. So you're not gonna, you know, you're not gonna believe in love. Not for Mr. Robsko. That was my that was my darkness reference for those of you who wouldn't pay attention. Yeah, exactly. I don't know, you're gonna think on the I love that song. Sorry. Sorry, I'm sorry, folks. Uh right, okay. Look, I actually I'm a bit more optimistic, uh, and I do think that um we do need things in our lives right now, uh, the way things are currently going, because we can't afford petrol, so we may as well go to the movies. Um, so look, I'm gonna say it uh it was 240,000 and actually now what it'll go a little bit lower,$220,000. I think it'll do that, and um, maybe a bit more, maybe a bit less. But I think it actually will do better than the second one. I've got a vibe, got a feeling. Well, I hope you're right. Alrighty. And yeah, now we're gonna go to the Oscar Pix, but just before we go to the Oscar Pix, there was a real interesting um thing that uh came out uh in Variety today. Now, I just can't quite remember if it was Universal Pictures or if it was Paramount Pictures. But by the by, um one of these um companies has literally just come out today and announced that uh they will no longer be putting their movies into streaming services as quickly as they have been. Excellent. This is a very, very interesting thing. So basically, a lot of movies they get put into cinema, but then they're they've moved what they used to call the the um theatrical window. Used to be like about 120 days, 150 days back in the day. Then it sort of shortened down to about 90 days. And since streaming came along, you know, some of these movies are coming out on streaming services that are accessible, or you know, if you've got a VPN, etc., within three weeks of opening in cinemas, which has obviously made it very, very hard for cinemas around the world and around the country to make money when people can then see it on streaming so quickly. So for a major studio to totally turn around, this is a complete backtrack on what they have been doing, and say we are going to have a minimum of five weeks before this movie comes out, and then in 2027, they're talking about extending that to seven to eight or more weeks so that movies actually stay in cinema longer and actually get viewed in cinema longer to help um turn around what has been happening with a lot of cinemas at the moment. They're closing and struggling. Um, that's a huge change. And I applaud them for doing it. It's probably a little bit late, unfortunately, for some of us who are struggling, but it's really, really good that they've done it. And you know, can't say that it's um I'd love to see other studios do that. So there, if um, have a look at that, folks, if you Google it um about this theatrical window and the extension. I know some people are gonna go, oh yeah, but I'd rather watch it at home and and and what have you. But you know, if you want to keep the cinema industry alive and if you want to be able to still think see things occasionally on a big screen, you need to support the big screen. It's just that's just the way it is.
SPEAKER_01I still like going out to the movies to see. I mean, and these movies are shot to be seen on the big screen. They really are.
Project Hail Mary Big Screen Hype
SPEAKER_02Yeah, absolutely. And look, there's a film coming out next week before we get into Oscars. There is a film coming out next week, which is getting rave reviews. Sci-fi, if you love sci-fi, you already know what I'm talking about. It stars Ryan Gosling, it is called Project Hail Mary, based on the book by the guy who wrote the book, The Martian. And of course, everybody who saw the movie The Martian, that film was a massive blockbuster and yes, amazing on the big screen. Well, Project Hail Mary opens on the 19th of March. It is getting absolute ray of reviews. And I watched a lot of reviewers, and there are some reviewers who seem to spend a lot of their time destroying every single film they watch. But this film unanimously has been getting incredible feedback. Everybody is saying it is the best film that's been out in ages, possibly years. So I thoroughly recommend if you want to see a big blockbuster on the big screen, and if you can see it on IMAX, oh I don't have an IMAX, but you know, IMAX is it's been shot for IMAX as well. So um, yeah, get out and check out Project How Mary. And Ryan Gosling is just such a bankable star. I think it's because he spent so much time here in New Zealand when he was shooting young Hercules back in the day. He's just so down to earth. He's just the he's the actor. If I had to go and have lunch or dinner with any actor, he'd be the guy I'd want to go and spend the day with because I just feel like he's possibly the most down to earth guy um out there at the moment. So even though he's gonna be in space next week. So yeah, happy days.
SPEAKER_01And that the director of that movie said there's not a green screen shot in the entire movie. Everything is a practical set. Yep. And obviously there's a CGI because you're in space and you've got the sun and all these things, but um there's there's no green screen, he says, in the movie they built all the sets. So I'm looking forward to seeing that.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and even even the um mon monster in the movie, not uh it's Paul the movie here, folks, but there is a uh there is a alien in the film that is all um puppetry and practical effects, which is just fantastic.
SPEAKER_01It looks really good. I watch the trailer, I can't wait to see it.
Oscar Picks For Major Categories
SPEAKER_02Yeah, look, I'm I'm trying to see if I can get a sneaky early screening for myself and my staff up here, but if I can't, I will be sitting there uh watching it first thing in the morning um with everybody else um come Thursday next week. All right, guys, let's crack on. Let's crack on with Oscars, because that's let's face it, this is the big thing. This weekend, Oscars. So, Brent, we don't do every category obviously, because we'd be here all night. Yes. Ain't nobody got time for that, folks. So we're gonna do the best actor, the best actress, best supporting actor, best supporting actress, best director, and of course the best picture. Now we'll go through them real quickly with terms of names and movies, and then we'll just decide what we're gonna do. So the best actor, Brent, we've got Timothy Chalamet, who was in Marty Supreme, which was very well received as film, and Timothy has been winning all the awards. You've got Leonardo DiCaprio for one battle after another, again, really well-received film. Not as many people saw that as saw Marty Supreme, but Leo has been getting rave reviews, although Timothy's been winning all the awards. You've got Ethan Hawke for a film called Blue Moon. Now, I hadn't even seen that, I don't even think it's released in New Zealand yet, so I can't really tell you much about that. Uh, we've got the incredible Michael B. Jordan for Sinners. Now, I loved Sinners, it was one of my top films of last year. Uh, so for sure Michael B. Jordan, and of course, Sinners has the most Oscar nominations ever. So that could be interesting. And then there's a gentleman by the name of Wagner Morder, and who was in The Secret Agent, which is a foreign language film, actually. So it's really good to see that they've um put him in and best actor. Now, Bren, any thoughts?
SPEAKER_01Okay, so everyone's gonna go for uh Timothy Chalamet. I'm not. I think he may have made a tactical error with his comments on opera and ballet. Um they might have already decided, but you know, I'm going for Leonardo DiCaprio.
SPEAKER_02Okay, now I'm gonna update my thing because I originally did go for Chalamet as well, and I'm having a change of heart. And I am really hoping, I mean, I'll probably this is probably one of those situations where I make the change and I shouldn't have, but I'm actually gonna go Michael B. Jordan for Sinners. Cool. I think that it is a great movie. It's an opportunity to write a few Oscar wrongs if I'm being uh political, but I'm not going to be political. Um, and yeah, I I think Michael B. Jordan could win it, so I'm changing that. All right, uh, best actress. Now, Jesse Buckley for Hamnet. Everybody has raved about that, and she has literally won every um uh award. The only downside to that is she also stars in The Bride, and that has been an absolute disaster. Yes, forget about that one. Be fair to Jesse. Everybody says Jesse's awesome, the film's terrible. So, you know, I I'm I'm not gonna judge it, I haven't watched the ride yet. But okay, so Jesse Buckley and Hamlet. You've got Rose Byrne in a movie called If I Had Legs, I would kick you. You've got Kate Hudson in Song Sung Blue, and that was hugely popular. Uh Renata, I'm gonna say this wrong. Renata Rhines Rinceive, it's very hard for me to say that. Uh Sentimental Value, which is again a foreign language film and very, very popular, and we're still playing that uh now and then. And of course, Emma Stone in Bogonia now. What do you reckon?
SPEAKER_01Okay, I've got to go for Juicy Buckley because I just don't care. Whatever she's in, I'll go see her. Yeah, enough said, go for JC Buckley as well. Every interview you ever see her, she just seems like the coolest person. She's just so good, down to earth. And yeah, I mean, that's she's been nominated for everything, right?
SPEAKER_02So And she's and she's pretty much won everything. And you know what? I'm not gonna disagree. I'm happy with that. I'm taking the same one as you are, so that could just be uh um cancelling each other out on that one. Uh, best supporting actor. So you've got Benicio do uh I can say this, folks, Binicio del Toro. I don't know why I caught myself on that, yeah uh in one battle after another. You've got Jacob Elordi for Frankenstein. Uh, if you haven't seen Frankenstein, it's on Netflix. That's a really good film. Um, Delroy Lindo for Sinners, uh, Sean Penn for one battle after another, and Stellan Skarsgard for Sentimental Value. Now, again, I chose Stellin Skarsgard here, but I'm having second thoughts because when I did my other Oscar thing here at work for the pick, I actually chose, uh, I'm just gonna go up and have a quick look. I chose Biniciel de Toro. So now I'm now I'm really screwed. I don't know what I'm doing, folks. What are you gonna go for?
SPEAKER_01Sean Penn, one battle after another. Yep. I think he's uh he's got to win.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, look, Sean Penn would probably be a good winning uh bet for that film because you know he's he's done a lot of good acting. Um I can't remember the name of the film. There's a film I really love and love him in. He was just basically caneoed pretty much in the whole film, um, where he played a photographer. Um it'll come to me. But uh look, I'm gonna switch my bet to Benio de Toro, one battle after another, and we'll see how that goes. Okay. Also, um I I've watched uh him in another film recently, the name escapes me, and I absolutely adored it. Uh can't remember what it was, but it was one of those uh great arty films eaters. So yeah, look, I think he's I think he is just such a good actor. Okay, uh best supporting actress, Al Fanning for Sentimental Value. You've got Inga oh, here we go again. I'm not gonna be able to do this. Inga Ibisda Linneas for sentimental value, uh Amy Madigan for weapons, uh Winmi Musaku for Sinners, and Tiana Taylor for one battle after another. And again, I originally chose Al Fanning, but I'm changing my my guess.
SPEAKER_01Oh, are you?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I'm changing my guess. So what are you gonna go for?
SPEAKER_01Al Fanning.
SPEAKER_02Oh god, this is gonna be that moment where I really regret. I can see it already, folks. This is what happens every time. I'm gonna go for Tiana Taylor one battle after another. There's just something about her and her performance. Uh yeah, I'm just yeah, I'm gonna take a real punt on that one.
SPEAKER_01Okay, cool. That's fair enough.
SPEAKER_02Right. Oh golly, here we go. We're down to the last two already. That was quick. Okay, best director. I like it, but this we'd go quicker. Um, best director, we've got Paul Thomas Anderson for one battle after another, Ryan Kugler for Sinners, Josh Safid for Marty Sabreen, um Joaquin Troyer for Sentimental Value. I've got, I hope I said his name right, apologies, and Chloe Zow for Hamnet. And again, I have chosen a director, but I am going to stick with my choice this time.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I'm going, I'm going for the same as you, I think. I'm going for Chloe Zow for Hamnet.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I look I'm I want to choose Ryan Kugler for Sinners, but I also feel that you know Chloe Zow and Hamnet has just produced such an incredible film that it I don't know. I sometimes it's a head and shoulders above everybody else. And this to me is two amazing films. Well, actually, there's a whole lot of amazing films there, but this to me is a case of going, okay, which film just did something that really struck a chord with people across the world, and I'm gonna go with Joey for that. Yeah. Alrighty, Best Picture. Now, this is where it all goes out the window. I'll be honest with you. Again, I chose Mighty Supreme, but I'm already re- I've already been rethinking it. Um, because in my other list for best picture, I chose Hamnet. Yeah, what I've that's what I've taken, Hamlet. And the problem is, now I'm really thinking about it, I kind of want to go Sinners. Which I know sounds weird, but I could imagine that this has happened before, where the same film seems to win everything. He gets the best film, and you go, well, it's obviously gonna be them, and then the rug gets pulled and it's not. Uh, so I'm still debating. Hamnet. Okay, well, the best picture choices. Okay, we've got Bagonia, you got Formula One, you got Frankenstein, Hamnet, Marty Supreme, One Battle After Another. Pause for breath. The Secret Agent, Sentimental Value, Sinners and Train Dreams. And again, Train Dreams was one of those Netflix films that released in cinemas for two weeks. Very few people have seen Train Dreams. I'd watched it. I actually thought it was really innovative. I liked it. Um, it was a bit soft and slow, but it was really good. Um, you and Marty Hamnet, didn't you? Yeah, I'm sticking with that. Oh, jeez. I'm gonna kick myself. I really want to go hamnet too, but at the same time. You know what? I'm gonna I'm gonna yeah, I'm gonna go hamnet. I'm gonna I can't bring myself. I want to say Sinners so much, but I can't bring myself to do it. Can't bring myself to do it.
SPEAKER_01So really Has Michael B. Jordan won an Oscar for anything he's been doing.
SPEAKER_02Michael B. Jordan's never won an Oscar, no. And and this is the Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I mean he is he's a great actor.
SPEAKER_02But again, he this is where he's he's acted in two roles for this film. Yes, yeah. Again, takes him to that level of um Chalamet played one guy, DiCaprio played one guy, Michael B. Jordan had to do two roles. So that's why I think it might be Jordan. Um I think B Jesse Buckley's got it in the bag. But you know, we've been wrong before. Um, but supporting actor, that's a crapshoot, really. Supporting actress is a bit of a crapshoot, but I think director and picture are possibly a lock. Look, it's either gonna be Hamnet or Sinners. And I gotta say that, again, not to be too political, but I do feel that we've seen many, many films with African American actors, casts, directors over the decades of watching Oscars, and they have been shortchanged and overlooked so many times. Absolutely. And I I've got to say it really annoys me because clearly some of those other movies, if it's like one of those Kanye moments, you want to stand up and go, no, no, that was not the best movie. But um, not gonna do that. Um but I really want them to win, but at the same time, I just feel like you know, Chloe's out or comes out and you know, it it's almost like it's sinner's year except for Hamnet.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, exactly. That's that's the way it feels, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, so look, I think I think we'll go with those predictions. I think we'll lock them all in unless there's any last minute changes from you.
SPEAKER_01No, no, I'll I'll stick with that. Uh I've been wrong every year, so I don't see why anything would change.
Play Along And Closing Thoughts
SPEAKER_02Mate, I'm never right. I always lose the sweepstakes. I am not that guy. But um one of my staff members, one of my young staff members, he has seen literally every single film we played last year. Uh, and um he's probably gonna win. And bless him, young people these days with their smartness and their brains. Red of mine. Oh dear. Well, I guess that brings us to the end of the show. Um, folks, um uh if you want to play along at home, by all means download yourself one of these lists of uh that you can find on the Oscar Net um website. You know, just go on the Oscar's website. They do have these things. You can click on it, play at home, have a bit of fun. Good luck. And of course, if you do better than Brett and me, don't tell us. We don't care.
SPEAKER_01No, I'd love to hear. What's your secret? We want your secret if you do.
SPEAKER_02Absolutely. What is it? What is it you know that we don't? But look, we're shallow, petty old men. We don't care.
SPEAKER_01Uh and on that note, we'll wrap it up and we'll be in the next episode to see as we eat a big, big dose of humble pie.
SPEAKER_02Absolutely.
