But there are record pressures on our health, social care and children’s services; and those covering homelessness, housing, domestic abuse, education, employment and training, criminal justice and support. Resources are stretched. Demand is escalating.

Traditional approaches, whereby public authorities either do everything in-house, or outsource services with the same process as when they buy goods, are not delivering good outcomes. The market has failed many people-centred services. We can’t just despair at these challenges. We must do better.

Jamie Veitch is a communications and business consultant, writer and radio presenter, specialising in social enterprise, purpose-driven business and solutions-based media. He has contributed to media including the Financial Times, Observer, Guardian, Times, Mirror and other newspapers; broadcasters including the BBC, ITV, LBC; and specialist media including CITY A.M., Environment Journal and Pioneers Post.

A career as a children’s magician paid Jamie’s way through university during which he travelled widely, rock climbing in Europe, China and Kazakhstan. He began his media career working for Inside Housing magazine which became part of Trinity Mirror Plc, Jamie then launched and ran a magazine publishing company for 12 years.

These days, Jamie interviews business and social enterprise leaders for a weekly radio show, and helps social entrepreneurs, business leaders, CEOs and senior management teams to communicate effectively.
