Pat's Peeps Podcast
Ep.40 Pat Walsh & Kendall Tobe discusses the joy of reunion and evolution, reflections on Las Vegas, Pat's Peeps + an homage to Charles Osgood.
Ever wondered what it's like to reunite with an old friend and laugh about the times you both waited for the cable guy? That warmth of nostalgia is exactly what washed over me as I sat down with Kendall Tobe, my former producer who's now conquering Las Vegas, in our landmark 40th podcast episode. We reminisced about the quirks of daily life post-move, and Kendall's adjustment to the desert's whimsical ways, all while celebrating the loyal community of Pat's Peeps that has supported us through an incredible 11-year journey.
Our talk took an artistic turn as I shared tales from the trenches of concert photography, including my recent stint capturing Depeche Mode in all their glory. Kendall and I pondered the potential of the new Las Vegas Sphere as a photographic playground, while extending an open invitation to you, our listeners, to possibly join us on a future adventure to Sin City. This episode wasn't just about catching up; it was a testament to the growth we've both experienced and the laughter that's been a mainstay from the very beginning.
Rounding out our celebratory session, we didn't forget to tip our hats to the late, great Charles Osgood, whose journalistic excellence left an indelible mark on us. We also discussed the lighter side of life, such as Lilu's dragon costume at the dog show, and our commitment to promoting local businesses. There's a heartfelt thanks wrapped in there as well, for you—yes, you—who've tuned in, engaged, and became a part of this incredible tapestry we call Pat's Peeps. It's been quite the ride, and I'm excited for what's still to come; so, keep your ears perked and your hearts open for more stories, more laughter, and that unique camaraderie.
Welcome back. Here we are again with Pat's Peeps. This is a milestone for us. If you could call 40 podcasts a milestone, this is a huge milestone. Pat, pat, pat, did you reach 40 podcasts? Pat, is this an extension of your radio show, the Pat Wall Show? Yes, it is. Thank you, boss. How are you today? Hey, hey, I'm Pat Wall Show. So the Pat Wall Show is heard everywhere and I heart radio everywhere, my friends and at KIPK in Sacramento. I've heard five nights a week on our 50,000 watt flame thrower, kipk, 7 to 10 pm. But this is an extension of that show, of the Pat Wall Show.
Speaker 1:This is the Pat's Peeps podcast and again, I'm very proud to say that we are at number 40 right now, number 40. We're being consistent and that's the thing. And I just want to say that we are on all of the streaming platforms. Officially. We're out there, we put ourselves out there. Now you can find us on your Amazon and your iTunes and your iHeart app and everywhere, apple, whatever. If you can stream off of it, you're going to find Pat's Peeps. So we're proud of that. That's a great accomplishment, as is our number 40 podcast. Here I'll let you know again.
Speaker 1:This is a Wednesday, the 24th day of January 2024. And as I look at my beautiful studio windows here in the foothills, it's a rainy day not raining right at the moment. We're expecting rain. There's some snow up in the higher elevation, so it's a beautiful thing to see this rain. We're blessed with this rain. Hope you are doing well on a Wednesday.
Speaker 1:You know and I'm mentioning that I do the Pat Wall Show at KPK and iHeart Heard everywhere in your free iHeart app. Like I said, you know that we've been on a year, going on 11 years now doing this show. 11 years. It's the longest time that. It's the longest period of time that anyone has held down that slot, I'm pretty sure, at KPK. So we would love for you to listen to that. And part of the thing that made us successful over the first 10 years plus is my lovely and talented producer, kendall Toby, who, as you know, she's gone on to do other things until we drag her back in Back into my broadcast here, into the Pat's Beeps broadcast. So she was on radio. And now, ladies and gentlemen, I ask you, put your hands together right now. Ladies and gentlemen, there she is, Kendall Toby's here. Hey, everybody, that's right, everybody. Hey, kendall, how are you?
Speaker 4:So good to hear you. Oh God, you're so sweet. That was such a sweet intro.
Speaker 1:I miss you.
Speaker 4:I miss you too.
Speaker 1:As I understand it, I've caught you in a perfect time. You're waiting for the cable guy, Is that right? You're not waiting for the cable guy? So did he give you the? You know we'll be there some more between 9am and 5pm, type of thing.
Speaker 4:Yes, he is supposed to be here anywhere from this morning until 4pm today, so it's just been the waiting game. You guys know how it goes with the cable guy.
Speaker 1:Don't you love that, you know, don't you love that they give you this window? So that's the only thing you can do, except wait at home. That's your only choice. You wait at home. Yeah, by the way, we're going to have to talk about the cable thing. I need to talk to you about that privately, so we can. I just have a recommendation for you. I don't want to say anything over this because I don't want to disparage anyone or anything. I just got rid of my cable and I'll have to tell you about that. But yeah, yeah, you know, because there's other sources that are cheaper out there. Sorry to say that to the cable guys, but in my estimation they're kind of overcharging you. So if the cable guy shows up while we're on the air, just keep it going. I just want to hear what the cable guy's up to too, if you do that.
Speaker 4:Wow, okay, maybe I will. I'll try to give him a little interview, yeah, if it's not on the door. Yeah, we want to know why?
Speaker 1:why does it? Why the five, six hour window? You know why that you know, just to find out. But yeah, so what else is new with you? What else is new and exciting other than just waiting for the cable guy?
Speaker 4:Just glad to have you on our little podcast here.
Speaker 4:Oh well, yeah, I've just been moving. The holidays are over and I've been settling into Las Vegas and just kind of getting over the moving phase. It's so exhausting and so it's just. It's just nice to really be nesting and settling in and then getting used to a new state, new state, new laws and adapting to the heat that will be coming soon, and Sacramento always got pretty hot, but I know I'm going to be definitely in store for some higher temperatures this summer, so yeah, we were talking off air and Kendall told me she said I don't know where you heard this, but you said that it's people or someone says it takes like seven years to get used to the desert setting.
Speaker 1:How's that going so far? Get used to the desert.
Speaker 4:Yeah, well, it's been pretty cold right now, but during the summertime I am I am a bit scared. I know I'm going to be in the pool a lot. I'm not quite sure why it does take seven years for the body to adapt to the heat like that, to living in the desert life, but I believe it. I believe I'm going to be going through it. So I'm preparing my body now.
Speaker 1:Lack of trees, lack of grass. I remember I also saw a someone posted a YouTube clip or something or some clip somewhere on social media and they were sitting at a parking lot in Las Vegas I don't know if it was at a grocery store waiting for something, I don't really know and she was saying for those of you who think that Las Vegas, you think about the heat, it's always so hot or this or that Well, first of all, I also know is you and I have talked about this before that Las Vegas at times has has incurred some flash flooding and things. But she said, if you think it's hot, you don't realize how cold it gets. And she's sitting in her car.
Speaker 1:You know like you would not even believe how cold it is. And if you're coming to Las Vegas, you better bring some clothes to this time of year, because you know, and bundle up because it's cold. Is that true?
Speaker 4:It's true? Oh, that is definitely true, and I think that you bring up a great point because everybody thinks oh, las Vegas, gambling sitting and the heat, it's so hot. But I never really knew until now that I'm the local that gosh it's. She's so right, it's freezing. I have my electric blanket upstairs in bed with me because it's just it's super chilly and it's way colder than than Sacramento Got.
Speaker 1:Well, at least you have all those snakes and things to keep you warm in your bed. You know all your pets that you.
Speaker 4:Oh yeah.
Speaker 1:Just crawl around, keep you warm, slither around you every night.
Speaker 4:Lelu is my little heating pad.
Speaker 1:I miss Lelu, your little dog, it's not a snake by the way folks.
Speaker 1:Lelu was her cute little dog Lelu was her little dog who made me a believer out of a hairless dog before I even want to touch a hairless dog. I'm still not gonna touch a hairless cat, so don't even try that. And for those of you are thinking the same joke in the back of your mind when I say that you run with that one, just, I'm thinking the same joke about the hairless cat. But I'm not gonna pet me a hairless cat. But okay, fill in the jokes, but the hairless wonder.
Speaker 4:She is my hairless wonder. She is like a little heating pad. I also have a tattle dog and he likes to sleep in bed with me, down by my feet. But Lelu, she really is like my little heating pad, especially in the cold desert, because she'll just nestle right up with me. She's like my little soon.
Speaker 1:Yeah, she little cutie. I miss her. She has the greatest little greeting of any dog ever. She does this little happy dance like she gets up on her hind legs. A little happy dance. She's can't wait to see it every single time. I really miss her. She was a great little addition to the studio when you would bring her in.
Speaker 4:And she is. She can't wait to come and visit. And you know what, pat? Everybody loves that little dance that she does, the reading that she does, and she is a big hit in Las Vegas. It's like I was thinking, okay, I'm just gonna walk down the street with her, I'll walk down Fremont Street, and I feel like people are just gonna throw money at us.
Speaker 1:Do they just this, you get a lot of attention.
Speaker 2:I like the way you dress.
Speaker 1:You dress in the way you dress.
Speaker 4:You that ask for money?
Speaker 1:yes, you know, you put little.
Speaker 4:Like their. Their owner well not saying that.
Speaker 1:But but you do dress her like. I saw a picture over the other day and and she's dressed up and like shed, her hair flipped over. You know he's many styles. Like her owner has many, many different styles, many different moods. It's delightful. I love it.
Speaker 4:Yes, I think I actually might start making her matching hair with me soon. So stay tuned for that, you guys. Lelu does Las Vegas showgirl style.
Speaker 1:It's great to have you on the podcast, kendall. Hey, let's. Let's move on to my next topic of conversation.
Speaker 4:What's going on with you?
Speaker 1:So you do know, have you? I do you listen to the show now that you're not a part of the show? I know you listen sometimes because I get messages from you. Like the other night, I got messages. I can't remember what you said.
Speaker 4:Yeah, people will definitely message me, like when you talk about me or when listeners talk about me and I'll, I'll start getting these messages. They're talking about you and so it's so nice to tune in and hear you guys, because I miss, I miss you and the show and the listeners so much did, they, did, they, did, you, did you get a bunch of texts this week. I Did, he did. I did get some messages this week.
Speaker 1:Yeah, what were they about Kendall?
Speaker 4:anything in particular well, I Got some messages this week. They said oh, they're talking about you, they're talking about you and they they're saying that they heard you on Curling on Sunday show.
Speaker 1:Yeah, you know how many people I've got this week telling me you're cheating on me. So many people Telling me, pat, because you think you have people to reach out to you, you think let me tell you. Oh no, I got a whole legion of people to reach out to me, pat, pat. And then they'll literally spell it out you, pat, it'll go, pat, pat, just like that. I can't, I can't believe. I still love that so much. If that guy only knew how much mileage we're getting out of that. No, people are doing it now. You know what I'm saying. Like she's cheating on you know. I like what's this? Now wait a minute, what? Yeah, yeah, oh yeah. I heard her on Walter sterling showing.
Speaker 4:I'm like oh my gosh. I mean, I didn't think people, I had no idea so many people listening to Walter show. Yeah, you know, I was like crazy, like I hit it big time. You know I'm like, wow, I got all those messages and yeah, I was just really shocked. And you know, pat, I didn't want you to think that I was cheating on you, but you know, but I didn't know it was gonna be such a big deal.
Speaker 1:What well people you know. They know that you're supposed to be loyal to me. What a dumb.
Speaker 3:Yeah, so what would that come?
Speaker 1:about. I'm curious what happened. You were just listening to Walter sterling and he or he called you, or what happened?
Speaker 4:Yeah, you know we had, we had started talking and he said, hey, he talked about me doing a Las Vegas report and so I know that he has Florida news and he's got like Alaska weather and he thought it would be. I would be a great addition to his show for a Las Vegas report.
Speaker 2:Hmm.
Speaker 4:So yeah, it was. It was. It was really fun and I thought it was really nice that the listeners so many people had listened and recognized, recognized me on there and and so many people had recognized me from your show. So that's great.
Speaker 1:But yeah, well, listen, I wish Walter the nothing but the best on on his show there. And that's on Sundays, right, sunday evenings. Is it Sunday evening or Saturday? Now Sunday.
Speaker 4:Yes.
Speaker 1:Sunday right.
Speaker 4:Yes.
Speaker 1:Yeah.
Speaker 1:Sterling on Sunday, All right so I just wanted to clarify here on my podcast, on the Pats peeps podcast, number 40, my moon milestone, number 40. If 40s a milestone, I don't know that. That my you know my producer wasn't cheating on me over this one. Just sterling used to feel it for me. You know, it's a man supposed to thank you, yeah. And then you went to another topic. You recently, what are you doing? Are you doing your photography? You went to, didn't you go to the Pesh mode recently and did something, right I?
Speaker 4:did. I took photos of the Pesh mode at the Chase Center in San Francisco. So that was really nice to be back in the Bay Area again and the Chase Center area. It's not the last few times I've been to the Bay Area. I've been in the tendering lane, which has been really rough. I got a hotel room one night. I think we had chatted about it on your radio.
Speaker 1:That way, the woman offered you some heroin when you were walking down the street, yes, and you had to step over some defecation.
Speaker 4:Yeah, it was really, really disgusting and it was sad to see the Bay Area in such decline and just so many, so much drugs on the street. I've never quite seen anything like that in my life. It's just so many people smoking Crack or fentanyl I'm not sure what it was heroin. So many people kind of just doing that zombie Trank thing that they do, just hunched over and right thing just so much a human, a species, like it was.
Speaker 4:It was sad but uh, going going to take photos of the Peshmoda, the chase center. Actually it gave me hope again in San Francisco and it was really nice. As you guys do want to check out, my photos are posted at ktalknowcom and I'm going to be working on a lot more photography there. Soon I'll be having a lot of Las Vegas photography and so I I had put in to take photos at sphere and hopefully I can take photos of. The u2 has a few more shows, so I'm crossing my fingers I can take photos of them and then also I put in for a photo press pass for fish. So good yeah, I might. I might be having pictures of those bands pretty soon here working a lot on my concert photography.
Speaker 1:If you get, if there's, if the u2 thing happens and you know ahead of time, I'd like to know. I wouldn't mind, depending on when it is, you know I wouldn't mind. I'm again I'll just admit I think I said this before I'm not a huge vegas guy, but I now have a friend who lives there and a new, and so that would make it worth it alone. But the fact that I'd like to check out that sphere you know the kind of music I like I would love to check out that sphere sometime. And if you end up getting a credential for a particular show with it whether it's u2 or, who knows, maybe acdc, I don't know, you never know who's going to come and play there at some point I'd love to come there and check out the sphere.
Speaker 4:I think that would be an awesome experience, especially if I can go with you, you should come and stay with me and we'll go out on the town. We'll go to some shows and you know, I was just talking to joe michael's case-by-case joe michael's about this. The other day he came to visit me at the dog show and so he was coming to support lilu and a dog competition.
Speaker 1:Oh, that's right, I saw pictures.
Speaker 4:Yeah, yeah, and it was really nice to see him and we were talking about a show because, and I said, joe, you guys, all the stations, you guys are all like family to me. Come and visit me, come to some shows. Beats have gone. He's is doing a residency right now at the horseshoe in vegas and I know how much joe michael's loves her. I said, joe, you gotta come, you gotta come come do a show. So hopefully you guys will all come visit me other than the moody blues.
Speaker 1:I think, I think joe, other than the moody blues, I think he only likes female artists. I'm pretty sure.
Speaker 4:Yeah, crystal bower saw Jewel.
Speaker 1:Yeah, selene dion you just go down the list, you know what I mean. Yes joe michael's for you. He's a good guy, though joe michael's a kfp k. Well, listen, um, anything else, candle, that we need to know about what's going on with you? Hey, I do want to know how did lilu do in the dog show?
Speaker 4:She did not win. So it was our first dog show and and you know we walked in there pretty cocky pat. We thought we're gonna win this, we're gonna win this dog show. I know my baby is the best doggy out there, right, and you know we get in there and this guy he's got this. You know, I didn't know it was a basic Dog show competition. He comes in there with a little turtle shell and some bunny ears, some playboy bunny ears. What he's wearing playboy bunny. Yeah, he was wearing playboy bunny ears and a little turtle and I went, oh okay.
Speaker 1:The judge was wearing a little turtle in bunny ears. Is the judge?
Speaker 4:No, no, no no, no, the dog got one. The dog got one. How?
Speaker 1:does a dog win with bunny ears in a turtle shell? What is going on? What are you supposed to?
Speaker 4:dress the dog up.
Speaker 4:The owner was the owner of the dog was wearing bunny ears and the dog was wearing a turtle shell. He was a quarter of a hair. You know, and I get it, I get it, but it's like I didn't know it was a two. I didn't know the owner was supposed to dress up. See, I mean, we would have been Cruella de Vil and I always kill it with Cruella de Vil, with Lelou, and I just I didn't know. You know, now I know we did our first dog show. They want the, they want the owner to dress up to you. Okay.
Speaker 4:And then the second person that came in they were wearing like a leopard, it was some sort of. It looked like a grayhound and it was wearing like a leopard jacket. And I thought, okay, well, that's what Lelou, she wears a leopard jacket every day. Yes, okay, you didn't know. All right, okay. And then the third person that one there was I have to compliment them on their creativity it was a golden doodle. So, right away, okay, golden doodle, all right, every time a golden doodle walks in the room, a golden doodle or a Frenchie Dang.
Speaker 4:Frenchies and I love all dogs, you know, I love all, I love dogs, I love all God's creatures, but like, honestly, I feel like and my sister is a golden doodle, but I almost feel like everybody has a golden doodle or a Frenchie. I feel like they're so overrated, you know, but here comes in the golden doodle, oh, the Frenchies are always overrated.
Speaker 1:Come on.
Speaker 4:The golden doodle was Cookie Monster and at first I'm looking at it like what is this thing? It's a blue, it's a fluffy blue thing. And then I said, does it have some sort of disease or something? Because it had these little like it had like puss looking things.
Speaker 3:And like was this John's an acne.
Speaker 4:What is this? And then I thought, oh, I realized that they're supposed to be cookie. They were cookie, all right, cookie Monster.
Speaker 1:You need to work on your cookie. Direct. You need to work on your cookie. What would you call it A costume or whatever, if they come out looking like puss, puss bubbles? Yeah, oh my God.
Speaker 4:I mean you couldn't really see the chocolate. Yeah, they look like a puss. You will like some alien. The getting worse and the little things are popping out. But yeah, they won. They, everybody else won, but my baby didn't win. But my baby is still beautiful and I love her.
Speaker 4:Now we know how to be prepared for our net dog show. Our costume was a dragon because we were the year of the dragon, 2024. She is my Chinese crested. And you know what? We didn't know that they were anti-dragon. And so now we know. And now I want to be more prepared for my next one.
Speaker 1:You found out they were anti-dragon. I'm sorry. We don't appreciate dragons here, this basic dog show. Sorry, you have to go to the more upscale dog show for the dragon competition Unbelievable, Wow. Well, you know what? I'm sure that. So that was just a test. That was just a test run for you. You'll do it again and you'll understand it. It was our test run.
Speaker 4:Next time we're going to be Cruella and we'll see who wins next time. I'm not really a very competitive person, pat, but you know, with my baby I'm starting to be a bit competitive and I know she can win all the dog shows. So we're going to get out there, we're going to start, we're going to start hustling the dog shows. Stay tuned.
Speaker 1:Well, maybe we'll get that for our next update. Who knows what episode that'll be.
Speaker 4:We're at number 40.
Speaker 1:Maybe it'll be. Who knows, what's one of the future? I don't know.
Speaker 4:Number 69.
Speaker 1:I'll have you back on number 69.
Speaker 4:For sure, but Kendall it's just that has to be my number.
Speaker 1:All right, we'll get you back at number 69. If not before, but let's, let's wonderful talking with you. Thanks for talking to everyone on our podcast here, our Pat's Peeps podcast, today.
Speaker 4:Thank you, pat. It's so good to talk to you and it is a national peanut butter day, so definitely celebrate. It's also national compliment day, so I just wanted to compliment you on being such a great friend and like family to me and Such an awesome talk show host and doing your, your Pat's peeps and really being a voice for the community and you know there was a mr Sacramento show recently. I said you gotta get in there. You gotta get in there. I know you're gonna win it.
Speaker 1:I wasn't gonna know, I wasn't gonna bring that up. But I had a lot of people say you should do it and I didn't know exactly what it was.
Speaker 1:Well, even though you didn't go in it, you are mr Sacramento, pat oh well, thank you, kendall, and if there's no like age limit or whatever, maybe I'll consider that next year, even though I only only because you guys recommended it. But thank you for saying thank you for that compliment on National Compliment Day and paying your right back. I already did a little bit, even not even knowing it was National Compliment Day. But to recap my earlier comments, we've been on the air going on our 11 years. You've been there for 10 of those years. The reason the radio show is so successful is because I think we were always very creative. I think our Time together was always it's always been fun on the air. You've always been a great contributor to the show. You're the one person that can literally read my mind and know exactly what I want at all times, like radar and mash. I don't even ask for it, I'm thinking it and it happened, and so Okay, the cable guy is here.
Speaker 4:I'm so sorry. I love you. Love you now, hey cable guy, cable guy.
Speaker 1:All right, enjoy, get your cable. Hey bye. Oh yeah it's a cable guy. There Is he. There, you hear cable guy, mr Cable guy.
Speaker 4:It's calm cast mr Cable guy.
Speaker 1:Mr Cable guy, help her out. Okay, sir, help help her out. Thank you, I think she's dealing with the cable guy now. Ladies and gentlemen, kendall Nice to have Kendall back in the fold, very nice. We'll touch bases with her and find out how her her cable situation went. I want to say a big thank you to a couple of people. You know we are gonna be about local business here too, and I want to say a big thank you to start off with. I want to say thanks to Robbie.
Speaker 1:Rob is really helping me out, man, rob's social media and podcast services. You can find him on social media, on Facebook. Think about this if you're anything like me, you're trying to increase your social media presence and it took me a while to kind of figure that out until I met Robbie. I'm telling you right now if you want to cut through the muck, you know, if you want to just figure out whatever it is you're doing, whether it's a business or website, if you're gonna be a Pat's peeps, you're gonna watch your, your social media really up to snuff and really getting attention. Rob has really saved me. Man. Robbie's a good dude. He has really showed me how to do this. He's the. He's the reason we're up on all the platforms and we're doing some of the things that we're doing right now. So a shout out to Robbie Check out Rob's social media and podcast services, because, listen, this guy will help you and he's a super good guy.
Speaker 1:Also, a shout out to a local business Southgate glass. I'm sitting in my home studio here looking at a wall that very soon, this wall will now be go from a wall into a beautiful eight, nine-foot piece of glass that's gonna show off my new deck and it's gonna show off my property. So when you go through my home and you go, you're just gonna be able to look right straight through my house out into my deck. It's gonna be gorgeous. Big French doors and Southgate glass. I mean, they've been around since 1961. Literally our lives are parallel. I've been around that long too and we're from the same neighborhood, in Franklin bowl on Franklin Boulevard in South Sac. But they have two stores, one at Carmichael. So I want to give a shout out to them because it's a local business, and I'm gonna show off the pictures of my new big French doors in my home as soon as that's done, and then we're gonna let you know how you can be a Pat's peeps Very soon as we evolve into that. That's one of our next things we're gonna be doing. Hope you had a good time yesterday Listening to Evan hunt, our guest, who is the chief revenue officer at high point arrow, and we were talking about laser weapons and jamming and Satellite warfare, and all of that is our longest podcast of the year.
Speaker 1:If you missed out on that, I highly recommend going back one checking out podcast 39, very different, very substantive on that one. You know we kind we tend to keep it light on this show, but I do want to add some meat to the plate, as to the platter as well, by doing Very important topics, like we did yesterday. So please check out podcast number 39. Another note let's see. Oh, yes, I, I heard about this last night. I hadn't even heard about this prior to going into work yesterday. I'm sad to see this, sad to see the passing of a Legendary broadcaster.
Speaker 1:Charles Osgood passed away. I Always loved CBS Sunday morning until and I still love it, except there. For for a while I thought they became a woken to kind of join the woke crowd, but not so much over the top. They weren't. I can't really put them in that category too much. So it's something that always started my day off with a nice feel to it CBS Sunday morning and Charles Osgood was the host of that for a long time.
Speaker 1:A five-time Emmy award-winning journalist, he anchored CBS Sunday morning for more than two decades. He hosted a long-running radio program. He's a radio guy. It's another thing I liked about him about Charles Osgood the Osgood file. He was referred to as a CBS news poet in residence. He's passed away at the age of 91. He died yesterday in his home in Saddle River, new Jersey from dementia and he was a very warm, friendly broadcaster. What I love for him about him, I should say is his flair for music. We had that in common. So we're both radio guys. We both loved music. Charles Osgood could write essays, light verse as well as report hard news. He worked in radio and TV, loved both of them, signed off all the time saying I'll see you on the radio, charles.
Speaker 3:Osgood, some of you may have heard rumors lately that I won't be hosting these Sunday morning broadcasts very much longer. Well, I'm here to tell you that the rumors are true. For years now, people, even friends and family, have been asking me why I keep doing this, considering my age I am pushing 84. It's just that it's been such a joy doing it. Who wouldn't want to be the one who gets to introduce these terrific storytellers and the producers and writers and others who put this wonderful show together? I Want to thank all of them and all of you are still growing audience for all of your support and encouragement. It's been a great run but after nearly 50 years at CBS, including the last 22 years here at Sunday morning, the time has come and the date is set for me to do my farewell. Sunday morning. It's September the 25th, after which you can still see me on the radio.
Speaker 3:The Osgood file continues. Between now and my last Sunday morning, I've got to practice seeing that old Weaver song. So long it's been good to know you. So long it's been good to know you. So long it's been good to know you. A long time since I've been home and I've got to be drifting along.
Speaker 1:Charles Osgood. I love that. I love the fact that this man would sing that to you right there in the air, one of his favorites. Not a lot of people will do that. You know me, I'll sing, I'll sing it, and so I appreciate him so much. For all of the mornings I would wake up to that show for the warm feeling that he could convey. As I said, to make the Sunday seem a little bit better to wake up that way. Although I will say this they shortened up the end. When they do the little nature scenes I always think they should. They used to run them a little bit longer. They shortened that segment up a little. I always love that.
Speaker 1:But to say that there's no one like Charles Osgood, as in understatements, as Rand Morrison, the executive producer, sunday morning, quote he embodied the heart and soul of Sunday morning and at the piano Charlie put our lives to music. Truly he was one of a kind in every sense. So they will. Cbs Sunday morning will honor Mr Osgood with a special broadcast. Sunday Took over Sunday morning after the beloved Charles Corral to what also loved. He was so good too. Charles Corral retired in 94. So, osgood, you know he's that's. Those are big shoes to fill at that time. Tough act to follow. But here he is, just like Charles Osgood, very folksy, hit the bow tie and he immediately clicked with the viewers, who continued to embrace the program. And is an unhurried TV magazine. And that's the thing. It was relaxing, very relaxing.
Speaker 1:Charles Osgood graduated from Ford University in 54, started as a classic music DJ in DC, served in the Army, got an on air position at ABC Radio New York and in 67 took a job as a reporter on the CBS own New York news radio station, news radio 88. See our lives parallel in this way. Then, one fateful weekend, he was summoned to fill in at the anchor desk for the TV network Saturday newscast. In 1971, he joined CBS Network, launched what he would be known as the Osgood file, and it went from there. In 90 he was inducted into the radio division of the National Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame and in 2008 Charles Osgood was awarded the National Association of Broadcasters Distinguished Service Award. He won four Emmy Awards and earned a fifth lifetime achievement honor in 2017. Jane Pauley, as you probably know, has succeeded Charles Osgood as host of Sunday Morning, becoming only the third host of that show.
Speaker 1:Rest in peace, sir, as we get to the final segment of my podcast, number 40, of course we call a record from my super rare record collection, my 45s, and we have done that today, and this is an interesting one. This is. This one's a little different. I don't know the song. I don't think I know the song. Maybe I do.
Speaker 1:Sometimes, when I start the song, I really go oh yeah, I've heard this. But right away there's an interesting thing about this. First thing I'll tell you is the song we're going to hear is from the brother of an extremely famous artist. His brother is really an American icon, in my estimation. So this is his brother, and this song is written by Larry Murray and recorded by this artist in 1969. The recording reached number four, though, on the Billboard Country Charts. Number 79 on the Billboard Hot 100 made it to number one on RPM Magazine's Canadian Country Chart. So today's song is a country song. The name of the song is Six White Horses and it is sung by Tommy Cash. Tommy Cash, of course, the brother of Johnny Cash. Here you go Six White Horses off of the original 45 by Tommy Cash.
Speaker 2:Some folks drink and some folks smoke. Some folks love and some folks don't. Some folks laugh and some folks frown. Some folks hear that I'll gun you down. Goodbye John. Goodbye John. Six White Horses come to take you home.
Speaker 1:I like that, very reminiscent of Johnny.
Speaker 2:Goodbye John. Took you away before you sang your song.
Speaker 1:Recorded by John.
Speaker 2:Wow, some preach wrong and some preach right. Some preach love and some preach fight. Takes every kind to make the world go round, takes only one to gun you down. Goodbye Martin. Wow, six White Horses.
Speaker 1:I see what they're doing here. John, john F Kennedy. He just said Martin, goodbye, reverend, goodbye, reverend. Oh, martin Luther King. Look at that. I was not aware of this tune. It's like Abraham Martin and John by Tom Clay.
Speaker 2:I dig this. Some people stick pretty close to home. Others are born with their urge to roam. Welcome, welcome to our town. I hope nobody tries to gun you down, Goodbye.
Speaker 1:Bobby, bobby Kennedy. Wow, okay, six White Horses come to take you home Again. Number 79 on the Billboard Hot 100. That's cool, man, I like it. Number four on the US Billboard Hot Country Singles. Number 84 in Australia, number 72 in Canada Top Singles and number one in Canada In terms of country tracks.
Speaker 1:Let's flip it over and see what's on the other side. Wow, that song really caught me by surprise. I'm never sure what to expect when it's in a popular star's brother or sister, but this is pretty good. Let's flip it over. I don't know a lot about this one, but it's called I O the World to you. That's the B side. I didn't find out a lot about this one, so let's just listen to it together. I owe the world to you.
Speaker 1:Tommy Cash, brother Johnny. Now, this is the kind of country music right here that I grew up with. My mom used to listen to this kind of stuff. I don't know this tune, but this is on Epic Records' white label and the lettering on the record label says radio station copy. That's going to do it. I hope you enjoyed it. Pat's peeps, number 30. No, number 40. Please go to Pat's Peeps dot com. Of course we're on all the streaming platforms. We would appreciate it if you'd go to Pat's Peeps dot com. That would help us out and help local businesses. Thank you so much. Thanks to Kendall Tobi. Kendall Tobi, pat, did you have Kendall on? Yes, we'll see you next time.
Speaker 2:Bye.
