Speaker 1:

always such a pleasure to be back with the podcast. It's the pats peeps podcast, number 127, number 127. Thank you for checking out as many of the previous podcasts as you have. Whatever that might be Still looking to grow our audience, we shall continue to do so, but I see that it's growing every day and thank you. Hey, it is a Tuesday, it is the 13th day of August 2024.

Speaker 1:

Peering out my studio windows into the freshly cleaned up, thank goodness, thanks to Kenny Kenny, thank you, man. Nice young man Came out and did a lot of work on my property. It looks really good, which is really exciting, by the way, because now that I it's been a long time. I've always wanted some help on my property. I have three acres, almost three acres, up here and just get some help because I'm always working on it and it never ends between pine needles and you know things, just things. You know, when you have property, it just never ends. So it's beautiful to have this young man who is up here and he's working and he's a, you know, a football player and listen, I thank this guy for taking on the challenge of cleaning up my property so it frees me up to do things and work on my studio and all of the things that I've been busy. So as I look out my window, it is warm Not as warm though it's breezy. Today it's probably, I don't know, I'm going to guess in the upper 80s. So wherever you are, I hope you're nice and comfortable.

Speaker 1:

My name is Pat Walsh and I do host my own radio show as well. This is sort of an extension of that, but it's much more than an extension of my radio show. But it's much more than an extension of my radio show. I always say it's an extension of my radio show, but again, it's much more, as you're going to see, which is another thing I keep saying, but believe me, it's. I guess things take a little longer than I realize, but all good things take a while, I think, if you want to do it right. So we're trying to do it right before we. But anyhow, we are very excited about what is to come. Yesterday really excited a lot of good feedback about Pat's Peeps 126.

Speaker 1:

I had a great opportunity to go out and visit with the good folks out at Ivy Park in Roseville. Just a great, great time and meeting Liala and Virginia, and thank you to Summer out there and thank you to Denise for setting this up. So these two ladies who recently turned 100 years old were fabulous and I hope you've heard the interview. I even played a portion of it on my radio show last night. By the way, it's heard everywhere on your free iHeart app and locally in Sacramento, kfbk Radio AMN FM. By the way, our Pats Peeps is heard on all the streaming platforms as well, including iHeart.

Speaker 1:

But yeah, these two lovely, delightful ladies sharing their thoughts over living 100 years. As I say, both of them celebrated birthdays recently. We had a birthday, I think one in I hope I'm getting it right it was in June, virginia was in July, and so they both turned 100. And let me tell you they were fantastic. I mean to listen to them share stories of when she's a little girl and she's from Roseville and the family sees families from the dust bowl coming into Sacramento with stuff just piled up you know from, as they're trying to move from Oklahoma to California. We need to see these things. This is why we need to talk to these ladies, not to mention they're just again, just beautiful, delightful ladies. So if you have not heard Pat's Peeps number 126, I invite you to do so. That was yesterday. So here we are at 127. And again, thank you to Ivy Park in Roseville. And it was really nice because, as it turns out, summer, who works out there and helped to coordinate all of this, she actually listens to my show, which made me so happy. And then, on top of it all, here I am flanked on both sides by these lovely ladies and there's an audience, a studio audience, which I wasn't expecting, and that was really nice to be able to have a conversation with these two ladies and then have a studio audience.

Speaker 1:

I'm going to go back out there. I probably want to get back from Ireland next month and I'm going to go interview three gentlemen who are either 100 or on the verge of turning 100. So I want to get a man's perspective as well. So I'll probably head back out there. But thank you to Ivy Park and Roseville. Speaking of Ireland, heck, we are at the 13th of August, as I mentioned, and I'm going to Ireland on the 5th of September. So what about three weeks away now? I can't believe I'm going back.

Speaker 1:

And I'm going to say this one more time if you're listening right now, if you're interested and you can do it, if you can do it and if you have the time and the means to do this, we would love to have you take the last. I think two, three, four seats. We have Conservative Tours. It is a wonderful tour company. I've been on five. This will be my fifth tour with them. I've been to France and Germany and Austria and I've been to Italy twice with them northern Italy, southern Italy, and now I'm very excited to go to Ireland where my family heritage is. But yeah, go to conservativetourscom, talk to Ken Chase and see if we get like three or four more seats. We have a completely full group and we always have a full group, so that would be really wonderful if anyone out there I know it's well, we have, like I said, three weeks, but it's not too late. They've told me that already they have the seats same price as they were when we started this thing.

Speaker 1:

So what else is new? Excuse me, oh, I know what's new. The NFL is new. Preseason is here, which was kind of interesting to see. Preseason football. Talked about this on my show just a little bit last night. But I love when the worlds collide because I'm into baseball and I'm following along with baseball. And now here comes football. So you have MLB, the NFL, and in like 11 days or something like that, we'll have college football.

Speaker 1:

For those of you who are into college football, I'm a big Notre Dame fan. I do like college football. It's just tough for me to devote a huge portion of my Saturday sitting in front of a television and then devote a huge part of my Sunday sitting in front of a television to watch the NFL. That's a lot of football in a weekend and I have things to do and I always have to make room for my team when it comes to the NFL. Now, of course, I watch my college team as well, but thank you to the technology, I don't have to always be right in front of the TV. I can record it as long as no one tells me the score. Some of you will love it when I say what team I love. Some of you will hate it.

Speaker 1:

But go Irish Notre Dame family tradition. Maybe or maybe not. Some of my father's ashes may or may not have been spread in one of the end zones, maybe on the touchdown Jesus side, maybe Maybe not. My dad loved Notre Dame, you know way back when Terry Hanratty. I still go back to like man. I just I have these great memories of Notre Dame because my dad loved it, so all my brothers love it. They look forward to college football every year in Notre Dame.

Speaker 1:

I remember they used to have like on. It seemed like it was on Sunday mornings very early, maybe before or after church. Maybe my recollection isn't exactly correct here, maybe it was on the way to the dump with my dad in the truck, but they used to have the replay of the Notre Dame game on radio and, as I think back man it would be, and I think they even did it on TV. That's how popular Notre Dame is, which is probably why a lot of people hate them. But they'd have that replay. And I remember on radio Era Procedure was the head coach and a guy on radio like the old AM Delco radio that barely worked, you know, in the station wagon or the old truck or what have you only got AM back in the day day, probably the late 60s, early 70s, and they'd have that old time announcer.

Speaker 1:

We find ourselves notre dame now the 42 yard line of iowa state and rally back to pass. There's the pass across the middle. It's a completion now the irish now down to the 27 yard line. You know what I mean, like that, and they would play the highlights, or and then I remember they because it would be a limited time. So you're like like um, you know, whoever they were playing, usa was unable to advance the ball. Of course they were against notre dame. So we move now to fourth down. And or it would be like so we moved after the punt and notre dame three takes the ball. They don't remember this stuff. God, remember that so well. God, those are such great memories. And then you'd go watch the NFL. Go watch the NFL, man. So it was a good day, but thank goodness for technology, I just can't sit there both days.

Speaker 1:

In terms of week one to the NFL, which was preseason, it doesn't matter. 49er quarterback, since, listen, I'm a Rams guy, but I'll be courteous here. I'll start with the Niners. Again, it doesn't mean anything. The final score doesn't mean anything. All this is is a way to whittle down the roster. Take a look at some young players, see who really stands out, see who's really not gonna perhaps make the cut. Niners quarterback Brandon Allen's box score did not look impressive. He went 7-13 98 yards passing, zero TDs, did have a few impressive plays along the way in a 17-13 loss to the Titans. At one point he had three pretty nice throws finished with a 12.4-yard average on the depth chart. So that was their first preseason game.

Speaker 1:

The Raiders played their first preseason game. They played against the Vikings. So we saw guys like JJ McCarthy, the draft pick for the Vikings, replacing Curt Cousins who went to Atlanta. And you know you're going to see the third and the fourth string units, like I say, in these games. That's about it. Vikings quarterback their new like I say, their draft pick. Jj McCarthy, their top draft pick, started off well. He started off a little rough but then he came back and looked pretty impressive through an early pick against Vegas. But you have Sam Darnold who is starting, apparently for the Vikings going into the season. But then you have JJ McCarthy who now is injured. Looks like he's going to have to have knee surgery. That's not good news. I just saw that story this morning. But McCarthy made a big-time throw, a couple of touchdown passes, threw 17 times, earning a 90.5% passing yards through the air as opposed to yards after catch and seemed to get the ball out of the pocket pretty quickly, out of his hands pretty quickly, a little faster than Sam Darnold. It appeared to me the Raiders did lose this game 24-23.

Speaker 1:

My team, the Rams, played. They played the Dallas Cowboys Played them at SoFi Stadium, stetson Bennett quarterbacking, and to me there was a couple of guys like Tyler Davis on the defense that stood out really well. This guy was bringing the heat on the offense. Jordan Winnington, this guy look for this guy this year's going to be good. He's going to be good Rookie. Jordan Winnington.

Speaker 1:

You know, last year the Rams got this Pukunuku a fifth round. Like who's this guy Pukunuku? And look what we found out, who he was Said rookie records for receiving. In my opinion I said this on an earlier podcast they should have rookie of the year in the AFC, rookie of the year in the NFC. Had they had had that then because you know, I mean he would have won rookie of the year in the NFC. Cj Stroud won it in the AFC overall, but I think it was hard to see Puka not win Rookie of the Year in the NFC and have that set up like that. But they don't. So it's a moot point, but anyhow. But this guy, jordan Winnington, jeez.

Speaker 1:

Another late-round gem from Texas. Great first half Six receptions, nine targets, 74 yards, four first downs for the Rams offense. They looked good, physical, created positive gains after the catch, 36 yards after the catch, one forced missed tackle and certainly, I guarantee you, impressed the Rams coaching staff, Jared Verst, braden Fisk and some of the defensive guys we're not going to get to see. They're not going to be playing so anyhow. And then Stetson Bennett was the story in this one, really, when he threw four picks. Was it four? Might have even been five. A couple of them weren't his fault, a couple of them were, but nonetheless, in the end he drives the team down the field and makes a great move to throw a touchdown and win the game for the Rams. They beat the Cowboys 13-12. But again, none of the scores matter, as fun as that was.

Speaker 1:

I'm still following Major League Baseball, as you know well. Maybe you don't know I'm assuming, perhaps you don't know but on my radio show, right before opening day, we have a little contest. Four or five of us come in and we all pick who we think is going to be in the playoffs, win the World Series, all that major league baseball. And we've done this. This is our eighth year, so we've done seven years. And you know when people say you know I'm not trying to brag Well, that's BS. I'm here to brag. I've won every time. Like, baseball is my sport and I'm looking to make it eight in a row and stay undefeated against the likes of Greg Perry and Robin the Interrupter, and Billy Bones, you know, and so Joe Michaels this time around.

Speaker 1:

So in looking at some of my picks here we are past midway through the season. Let's look at the stands. I picked the Orioles in the AL East. To be honest, I believe everyone picked the Orioles in the AL East. Greg may have picked the Red Sox, but I think many of us did end up picking the Orioles because they were obviously showing promise. Well, at this point they're in first place, but they're only a half game up on the Yankees, who were very disappointing last year. But here we are with the Yankees half a game back. The Red Sox, who look miserable to start this season, are only seven games back. They've had a resurgence until they ran into the buzzsaw of the LA Dodgers at Dodger Stadium where they were swept by four.

Speaker 1:

I love saying that, hoping that my brother Jim is listening. And let me add this, if my brother Jim is listening Ha, how you like that? And the American League Central. A lot of the people that were in the contest went with the Twins. I think Joe Michael well, I know Joe Michael's picked the Tigers. The Twins are such an up-and-down team. A couple years ago, really good. Three years ago, really good. The next year, miserable. Last year, really good. This year, three-and-a-half back of a team that I chose. I'm pretty sure I'm the only one that chose them, maybe not, I can't exactly remember, but if I'm not the only one, I think I am, or maybe one other person picked the Guardians, who are in first place in the American League Central at this point.

Speaker 1:

Anyhow, this point of the season in August, mid-august, up by three and a half In the American League, the Rangers won the World Series. Last year, the American League West excuse me, the Rangers won the World Series. I picked them last year not to win the World Series, but they hadn't been in the playoffs forever. But they just seemed like a team that was really coming on with the acquisitions that they made. And it proved to be true and they ended up winning it all. So I threw them in the mix. I picked three teams believe it or not from the AL West. Get eight teams each league. Pick the Rangers Right now struggling a little bit, they're eight and a half out. Okay, but they're still in the mix Could make the wild card.

Speaker 1:

I chose the Mariners. Well, the Mariners are only a half a game out of first place. Half a game To the team that I said and I think I'm the only one that picked them I said, look, I cannot not pick if that makes any sense. I cannot leave out the Astros as much as right now. I'm hating on the Astros because of a couple of years ago, everyone knows, but you know a few years ago now actually. But until they are not in first place, until things drastically change within their lineup, I cannot give up on the Astros. They're in first place. They started the season off miserably. Now they're a half game up on the Seattle Mariners Over in the National League, starting in the East.

Speaker 1:

I personally took, and I'm sure several of us did, as it turns out, as I recall, a lot of people picked the Phillies. A lot of people picked the Braves. The Phillies are in first place. The Braves, strangely enough, have been struggling lately but they're seven games out and certainly in contention for a wild card. But they've lost seven of their last ten, which is unusual. It's a very good team and I think a lot of us picked them. National League Central. They were good last year. I knew they would be good this year. So I went with the Brew Crew Milwaukee leading the surprising Cardinals who were miserable earlier in the year, coming on a little bit better 4-6 in the last 10. Eh, their mediocre at best 60-59. Seven and a half games back. No one else really is in contention Cubs, reds, pirates, and then in the National League West, things are interesting there.

Speaker 1:

Many of us, if not all of us, except for perhaps Robin, picked the Dodgers to win. I was the only one, maybe, that picked the Dodgers to win the World Series. Yes, I'm a homer, but yes, I do believe they have the best team when they are at full strength. Right now they do lead the division. But it is somewhat surprising. We saw the Diamondbacks last year out of nowhere win the World Series. Are you kidding me? The Diamondbacks, I mean out of nowhere. I remember I was in Italy at that time when that was going on and I just couldn't believe it. Suddenly they're 3 1⁄2 back, as are the Padres, 3 1⁄2. At 67 and 53, they trail the Dodgers by 3 1⁄2 games.

Speaker 1:

Now here's the thing about the Dodgers yeah, powerhouse, maybe the best roster in baseball, arguably arguably. But their pitching staff is decimated. Max Muncy's been out for a good portion of the year. They just got Kershaw back. Tony Gonsolin is out. I mean, if you go right down the line, dustin May when's the last time you've even seen him come out? Mookie Betts has been out of the lineup. He just came back yesterday. He's been out what? Since June 11th or June 19th or something, I think maybe June 19th, and here we are in August. But yet they've managed to be able to hold on to first place and some surprising reasons. Kike Hernandez is clutch, will Smith has been clutch here and there, but Shohei, of course, has been spectacular. So, anyhow, baseball I'm in really good standings.

Speaker 1:

I'm going to get an update on all this today and see where everyone stands within our baseball pool so I can let everyone know where we all stand. So enough about sports. I'm going to jump into our music of the day, because today happens to be a day where I have to do a couple of things before I go do my radio show. So I went and I pulled a record from my rare 45 collections collection of rare 45s promo copies and I want to pull this out. I was so happy to pull this record out today and I want to pull it out of the sleeve because I haven't yet and I want to see the condition it's in. This will be awesome if it's in. If it's in mint condition, pull out a little dust on it. Oh, my goodness, my goodness. I can assure you this record is never, until this very second, it's never been out of the sleeve. Oh wait, a second Hold up now. This side does have a couple of slight scuff marks, but it looks like it may have happened within the sleeve at one point or something just very slight, but this record's never been played. I mean, I'm looking at it. This is an absolutely immaculate condition and this is really a classic White label. Warner Brothers Records, burbank, home of Warner Brothers Records, promotion. Not for sale White label because it is a promotional. It's got the two stars and it has.

Speaker 1:

It's the edited version of the song and it has a sticker on it. This song was released in 72, but it has a radio station stamp, or someone took a stamp and hid it and it says May, let me see May. Oh my gosh, it might be my birthday. I believe it says May 16th. It's my birthday. They stamped this the day I turned 13 years old. Amazing, amazing.

Speaker 1:

So I'm going to, as soon as I start to tell you who it is, you're going to guess. Let's see how long I can go in describing it before you go. I know exactly what you're talking about, it's so obvious. Let me say this about it it is an iconic song. It has been played millions of times. Here's another hint it's probably the first song that most people, if you, ever played a guitar. It's probably the first song that you ever tried playing on a guitar if your parents or you were into rock and roll. Now, there's like three songs that I can think of in that category. This one's very obvious and I play it. I don't have the rights to it, but I'm going to try to educate.

Speaker 1:

This song is by an English rock band. You're going to get it instantly Released on a 1972 album. I'm not going to give you the name of the album just yet, but the lyrics are based on true events. Chronicling, excuse me the 1971 fire at Montreux Casino in Montreux, switzerland. You already know what it is. I know what you already do. Consider the band's signature song.

Speaker 1:

Its guitar riff is considered to be one of the most iconic, if not the most iconic, in my opinion, in the history of rock. In 2004, the magazine that I no longer respect, that I used to respect many, many years ago, rolling Stone, placed this song at number 434 on its list of the 500 greatest songs of all time, which is complete and utter rubbish 434. Give me a break with the woke magazine crap. Total Guitar Magazine ranked the song's riff number four on its greatest guitar riffs ever number four on its greatest guitar riffs ever. And in March 2005, q Magazine placed it at number 12 in its list of the 100 greatest guitar tracks.

Speaker 1:

Okay, let's see. There's an album version. Like I say, this is an edited version easily identified by its central theme, developed by their guitarist, who's at the very top five of my favorite guitarists a four-note blues scale melody in G minor, harmonized in parallel. Fourths, the riff played on the Fender Stratocaster Electric by the guitarist, later joined by the hi-hat, and the distorted organ got it. And then the rest of the drums, the electric bass, before the great singer's vocal. By the way, the guitarist claimed that the main riff is an interpretation inversion of Symphony no 5 by Ludwig van Beethoven and he says I owe him a lot of money. And the organist doubles the guitar part on the Hammond C-3 organ.

Speaker 1:

And the eve of the recording session, at concert with the great Frank Zappa my favorite and the Mothers of Invention, held in the Casino's Theater. Theater's final concert before the casino complex closed down for its annual winter renovations would allow this band to record there. At the beginning of Don Preston's synthesizer solo in King Kong, the place suddenly caught fire when someone in the audience fired a flare gun towards the Rattan covered ceiling. Thus the lyric some stupid with a flare gun. Frank Zappa and the Mothers had the best place around. You know what I'm talking about Richie Blackmore on the guitar, john Lord on the killer keyboards, ian Gillian on the vocals. I mean, this is a great band. It's one of my favorite bands. Ian Pace, one of the best drummers. Here we go. So without further ado, it is, of course, smoke on the Water off Machine Head. Deep Purple Edited version.

Speaker 1:

If you listen to the original, it would go like this Okay, that's just one of the edits. As you heard, richie played that riff twice. Right, and that's just one of the edits within the song. Obviously. Here's the edited version. You'll get that riff once, once before the drum kicks in. All right, the drum and the keyboard Bass, the other drums, bass, drums To make records with a mobile.

Speaker 1:

We didn't have much time. The blank zapper and the mother Are at the best place around the sun's. Stupid, with a blackout, turned the place to the ground. Smoke from the water, fire in the sky. Smoke from the water. It burned down the gambling house. It died with an awful sound. A funky chord was running in and out, pulling kids out the ground. When it all was over, we had to find another place. Swiss time was running out. It seemed that we would lose the race.

Speaker 1:

Smoke on the water was included on the Machine Head album released in 72, but, like I said on the record, it wasn't a single released as a single until a year later, may of 73. In this case, stamped on my birthday. Band members have said they didn't expect the song even to be a hit, but it reached number four on the Billboard Pop Singles Chart in the United States during the summer of 73. Listen to that. Edit. Total edit right there. Edited that edit. Total edit right there. Edited out so much of it right there that's the biggest part of the edit right there Reached number two on the Canadian RPM charts and propelled the album to the top ten more than a year after its release.

Speaker 1:

It's a great album. By the way, this is an interesting fact too, because they did this live in Japan on a live album, which is also a great album. But they put the live version found on the album Made in Japan as the flip side of the studio single. So you got the studio side on one side, the live version on the other side. Thanks for listening, pat's Peeps 127. See you next time.
