Ep. 136 Today's Peep Hits an Irish Pub in Cork where Pat's Family Originates, Irish Hospitality with a Live Cork Pub

Pat Walsh

Ever wondered what makes Irish hospitality so legendary? Get ready to experience it firsthand as we transport you to the heart of County Cork, Ireland, where we record live from Sinead's, the oldest bar in the area. Surrounded by a lively group from Conservative Tours, we soak up the vibrant atmosphere with traditional music and whiskey. Lisa with an E shares her uncontainable excitement about our upcoming secret tour of the Jameson Distillery, while Chris praises the genuine nature of our show. His wife Julie recounts her daring adventure of kissing the Blarney Stone, and the night continues with toasts of Guinness and spontaneous conversations with Northern Irish locals Sean and Jack.

Next, we switch gears, engaging with patrons about their fascinating lives. with interesting discussions. Our shared passion for music leads to a memorable chat about the legendary Irish band Horse Lips and their connection to Belfast. The conversation takes a turn towards sports, where we talk about teams like the Sacramento Kings and the New York Jets, all the while exchanging delightful cultural quirks and stories that highlight the universal language of camaraderie.

As we stroll through the lively streets of Cork, the connections we make feel like old friendships rekindled. We meet a colorful array of characters, including Alan, David, Harry, Eileen, and Anne-Marie, who share their stories and heritage with us. From Newfoundland tourists reminiscing about their Irish roots to humorous anecdotes about driving on the "wrong" side of the road, each encounter adds a layer of warmth to our journey. The episode wraps up with heartfelt reflections, a friendly chat with Ken, and a sense of gratitude for the beautiful memories we've created in Ireland. Join us for this unforgettable adventure, and feel the magic of Irish hospitality come alive.

Speaker 1:

All right, all right, I'm going to try to record this. I don't even know if this is going to work, but I'm going to give it a shot. Patch Peeps 136. And we're in County Cork. This is where my family heritage is, from County Cork. Now you're hearing a lot of noise behind us. I'm with a group of great folks here on Conservative Tours. This is September 11, 2024. And we are in Sinead's Now. Sinead's is the oldest bar in Compton Cork. I don't even know how long it's been here. Woo-hoo, that's Lisa. Hi, lisa, lisa with an E. Are you having fun?

Speaker 2:

Lisa with an E, I am having a ball. This is the best night ever on this whole tour. You know you're giving competition.

Speaker 1:

How you doing, sir. Good, you're doing. Good, you're giving competition to Darlene with a Y because you're Lisa with an E. So, yeah, we're hanging out, we're with Chris and Julie and Tammy and Charlie. There are so many good people on this trip and we just walked about I don't know. They said 10 minutes, it was more like 15, right, lisa with? An E Probably yes, and we wanted to see. They wanted to see the oldest bar in County Cork, and so that's where we are right now. And to describe it.

Speaker 2:

It's a lively, lively bar.

Speaker 1:

Yes, Very dark.

Speaker 2:

We're ordering whiskeys right now because you know what Lisa with an E that's what you do in Ireland, apparently is you drink whiskey oh by the way, and we have booked a tour at Jameson Distillery on Friday night, so we will let you know how that goes, but it is a secret tour.

Speaker 1:

Everywhere you go in Ireland, you hear music like this in the background. You walk by a pub, you hear this music playing and I tell you, I feel Absolutely at home here in Ireland. So I think what we'll do I hope you can hear everything we're saying we're going to talk with some folks who are on a trip and what we'll do. I hope you can hear everything we're saying we're gonna talk with some folks who are on a trip. See what they have to say and see if we can't compete with this noise here in the bar, which I'm loving. I'm gonna tell you about Chris. Chris is on the trip with us, with his wife, and he's this guy's like the most generous guy there is, like you get. You can't go anywhere without Chris in. Would you like another drink?

Speaker 3:

Well, you know you've got to pay it forward and you know we're in Ireland and what do you do but drink?

You know what I mean. There you go, come on through. This is exactly how I pictured a bar to be in a pub, to be in Ireland, the homeland. What are you telling these two fellas?

Speaker 1:

sitting at the bar, sean and Jack, both from Northern Ireland, and they're willing to talk to you about what, whatever about whatever Northern Ireland and they're willing to talk to you About what, whatever About whatever About American tourists walking up and bugging them when they're trying to have a damn good time at a bar how you fellas doing, she said. She sent me over here. I figured you're on my podcast. By the way, I'm Patrick. It's a pleasure to meet you. I hope I'm not bothering you. I really didn't mean to.

Speaker 2:

This is Pat, one of our local foodies in Sacramento, california. So tell us about Northern Ireland, sean and Jack right.

Speaker 1:

Sean and Jack, pleasure to meet you. You want to say anything? See, this is what you do. When you put people in the spot, they're like, hey, here's what we want you to do. Leave us the hell alone, tell me about Northern Ireland.

Speaker 2:

I think it's 1889 or something.

Speaker 1:

1889? Wow, what's Belfast like? Can I ask it out at least? Yeah, belfast is a good spot to work. It's a very good atmosphere, a lot of fun. Yeah, yeah, I mean, this is a crazy random question and you're probably too damn young to know this, and that's okay. Do you know a band called Horse Lips? No, from Ireland. They did an album called the Belfast Gigs and they are the rockin greatest band. They're called an event. Their names called horse lips. Every time I think about the Belfast gigs, I always want, because of them, to go to Belfast and experience live music. In Belfast, it just seems like the place to go to experience some good, some good music.

Speaker 3:

You know, it's a lot of good bonds in the north, like a lot of good bonds. Yeah, snow patrol, snow patrol. Well, gentlemen, I'm not gonna bug you anymore. A lot of good bands. Yeah, off the Snow Patrol, snow Patrol, yeah a lot of good bands.

Speaker 3:

How you doing. Man, I like them, you like the Kings. Yeah, sacramento Kings, this is capital. I don't know nothing about NBA, but they be my team. Is that right? Why the Kings?

Speaker 1:

Why? Because?

Speaker 2:

Apparently. It's not offensive, it's not.

Speaker 3:

Also also. Oh, that's really cool.

Speaker 2:

When you say fuck off. That's what we learned here. We also learned the C word is okay here. Yes, but it's not okay.

Speaker 3:

It's usually the C and the N word are not good. The C word isn't good in front of the ladies, but in Ireland it's good to say if someone says C, just to say in general topic, but also if you're having a laugh with someone and you don't quite believe them what you do when you don't and you want a bit of a laugh, you say fuck off.

Speaker 1:

So when you say the C word, you're talking about the word cat. Yes, that's what I thought.

Speaker 3:

They don't mind being called cats. What are you Cats? Okay, okay.

Speaker 2:

This is David.

Speaker 1:

So I'm going to say it's soccer, not football, football's American, can I?

Speaker 1:

It makes perfect sense. Yes, it does, because guess what? We have two arms and hands and two legs. Why the hell are you using two legs?

Speaker 2:

Don't you want to use your arms.

Speaker 1:

You know you want to use your legs. Damn, if I could use my arms, I could show these people what real sports are about right Now. Have you heard about Gaelic football? You use both your arms and your legs. I love Gaelic football and you actually use your legs a lot more.

Speaker 3:

I love it.

Speaker 1:

Gaelic football Okay that is football you talking about, the actual football or soccer? Gaelic football Gaelic football.
