Ep. 172 Today's Peep Braves Rainy Rivals, Friday the 13th, Witnesses a Shocking Mid-Game Exit, Christmas Helmet Story, How does a Norcal Boy Become a Ram Fan? And you'll be "Taken Back" in Today's Rare Record Spin
Ever found yourself celebrating a Rams victory amidst a sea of Niners fans, drenched and ecstatic on a rainy night? Join me, Pat Walsh, in the 172nd episode of Pat's Peeps podcast as I recount the unforgettable experience of witnessing a Los Angeles Rams win in Niners territory, braving the rain and relishing the camaraderie of the opposing fans. From the cozy warmth of my studio nestled in Northern California's misty foothills, I reflect on the quirks of sports language, like the odd use of "merry" and "vaunted," and share how my strategy for respect and rapport with rival fans paid off in spades during an electrifying game.
But the plot thickens as an unexpected twist takes center stage—De'Vondre Campbell of the 49ers quits mid-game, stirring memories of Antonio Brown’s infamous exit. Listen in as I draw parallels between these moments and spotlight the remarkable resilience of the Rams, particularly Kyron Williams, whose standout performance turned the tide. We then journey back to my childhood, a nostalgic trip fueled by the iconic Rams helmet that ignited my lifelong fandom, underscoring the unwavering loyalty to one’s team. Get ready for a year-in-review segment that promises to compile the most memorable athlete exits of 2024, ensuring this episode is one you won’t want to miss!
Hello, my friends, welcome, welcome to the Pat's Beats podcast, number 172. 172. It's a Friday the 13th. How about that? Friday the 13th 2024. And as I take a look out my studio window into the wet foothills of Northern California gold country, it is raining, big time Raining, and you know it's been a really I love this fall so far. You get rain and we get a bunch of beautiful weather. Then back to some rain, you know nothing too extreme, but I hope you're doing well, happy, well, merry Christmas time to you.
Speaker 1:I think that's the only time of the year we use merry, isn't it, merry? I think it is Like you don't ever say how you doing Todd. Hey, merry February to you. Merry Valentine's Day. You know, no one says that. You ever think about that. I just thought about that for some random reason. No one says you know you don't sign a card for Easter and go, dear Lois, merry Easter, like that's the only time you use it.
Speaker 1:Here's another word that you don't use that often. At least I don't think so. Maybe people do. When I'm missing out the word vaunted. If I hear the word vaunted, there's only one thing I think of the vaunted defense Football. Honestly, I don't know anything else that's vaunted except the football defense, the vaunted Packer defense. There you go, packers. I gave you credit. I should give credit, when it comes to a vaunted defense in the NFL, to my Rams. Yeah, yeah, let me get this off my chest real quick. Hold on, yeah, boy. Thank you, sorry, I was at the game last night. Thank you to Chris what a nice guy His son Matt and their friend Rich. We went to Santa Clara to watch the Rams versus the Niners, clara, to watch the Rams versus the Niners, thursday night football.
Speaker 1:Now I have all kinds of observations about this that I'd like to share with you. First of all, let's just get to the real nugget in the room and that's that the. You know, listen, I'm not trying. I told people around me last night at the game because I'm like the only Ram fan in the section surrounded by red jerseys and red jackets, red ponchos, red umbrellas what have you? I said I do not talk smack about your team, ever Anyone's team, I said. But I do root for my team. So just letting you know, I just.
Speaker 1:I told the friends there and then some other people over here and they said yeah, we respect that and that's what I do. I'm never going to give you crap about your team. I'm not going to be the guy you know that's drinking too much and he's there in the stands like, look, I don't want to curse, but I want to, but I'm not going to whatever. You know what I'm saying, you freaking mother, you know what I'm saying. Then there's a fight and it's just no matter of fact. Here's what I do, here's my technique. This is my technique because of where I live.
Speaker 1:I'm Northern California but I root for the other teams. I root for the Rams and the Dodgers and anyone who listens to me knows that. By the way, I'm the host of the Pat Walsh Show. It's heard on KFBK News Radio in Sacramento and everywhere, on all your streaming platforms, including your iHeart app, just like my podcast. But yeah, I don't listen. I'm never going to give your team any crap, but here's what I do. So I establish a rapport with the people around me and generally now there are other Ram fans there, but generally I'm.
Speaker 1:You know, if you're a fan of the other team, you're pretty much surrounded in the opposing team stadium, Fair to say. Matter of fact, I knew the last time I went to a Ram Niner game I wore my white Dickerson jersey, my number 29, and I knew that the whole team Maybe. I already said this on my podcast. No, I'm not going to get into that. I already said that that I could see myself on TV. I said that in the last one, so last night at the game. So here's what I do I try to endear myself to the area around me and in doing so we laugh, you know, because we're there early. By the way, really awesome setup, I guess.
Speaker 1:If you're, you know, a season ticket holder at these stadiums at least in Santa Clara last night, if you're a season ticket holder, you get stamped on, your hand gets stamped and you go into this area where, man, they got it all laid out, everything you could ever want, all the food, you want anything you want to drink. They have liquor and beer, but you have to buy that. But everything else, you want a chili dog, you want pizza, any of your favorite junk foods right there. So that was nice, everyone was nice. So I try to endear myself to the fans around me. We're there early, we're having a conversation, we're getting to know each other. Yes, they see that I am alien to the group because somehow I'm wearing the hated Rams jersey and I'm wearing it with pride. Man, go Rams. And when the game gets going, I'm also by the way, I'm not the kind of fan that's going to root for my team in an obnoxious way, I'm not doing it, but I will try to be a little bit funny Surprise. So let me give you an example. True story Maybe I talked about this already again, as I think about you know, as I get ready to talk about these things I never know whether I said this on my show or my podcast, perhaps I mentioned this on 171, that they do this thing huh, huh, huh.
Speaker 1:Right, they stand up every time they get a first down. And the 49er fans do this thing with their arm, where they point forward with their arm and they go oh, oh, oh, like they're chomping air. And that the first time they did this or at least that I recognized it in the stands I asked what it was and they explained to me that's every time they get a first down. So I knew about it. So I did this before, but I did it again last night and, if you'll pardon the expression, let me just say it this way, just pardon me for this, without being a dick, all right, doing it in a fun way. So I said last night night I was like man, there they go with that chant.
Speaker 1:Again, chris, who invited me to the game, told me that it had something to do with the movie 300. And it had been going on since the Jim Harbaugh days in San Francisco and the first time I ever saw that was during the Jim Harbaugh days, to be honest with you. But so, the point being, they would do this during the game last night. So every time the Rams would get a first down or a sack, I would stand up and go extend my arm, but I didn't do it in an obnoxious way Like. You can do it without being a jackass, like I said, I didn't say jackass until just now, but you can do it without being like, with an attitude, like in your face. You can do it in a fun way, like and you kind of let it gas out, and then you look around in a inquisitive way, see if anyone's going to punch you. Everyone laughed, we had a good time. I want to say this about Niner fans While I've never been a fan of the team, I will say that I've had some pleasurable experiences at the game with Niner fans. So thank you.
Speaker 1:Now it did rain and I went to. I probably told you this yesterday, but I was like washing these jackets that I hadn't worn in a long time, thinking that these will be because it's going to rain. I think these will be the great jackets to wear to this game. They're kind of like they'd be like in my mind for whatever reason, like I know anything about anything about these jackets. Oh, this one looks like it would be the most rain repellent. Now, I probably should have got some rain repellent spray or whatever they have to offer. So, this jacket that I have, I thought, yeah, this one looks pretty rain repellent. Let me tell you I could not have been further from the truth. It soaked up every ounce, every single drop of rain until and then I wore a long sleeve, a long john shirt, thick one, under that, thinking it was going to be cold, wasn't that cold? But the jacket was so thoroughly soaked and my long, my long john sleeves were soaked. Then my undershirt was soaked. It was just whatever. I'm sure the people in Buffalo are like yeah, you wussy. Hey, if anyone's listening in in Buffalo, hi there, how are you? So I did not get the apparel correct last night.
Speaker 1:Now, this was a meaningful game, because this was the game where the cream was going to rise to the top, or however you want to say it. This was meaningful in that, if the 49ers win this game, the Rams, who put up 44 on the mighty Buffalo Bills last week, who schooled the Bills yeah, they had points scored against them last week, but it's the Bills. I mean this man, this Josh Kelly's a good quarterback Anyhow. So if the Niners win, anyhow. So if the Niners win, then they're going to be in the mix. I think they're going to be right back in the mix. I mean, josh Allen is what I meant to say, not Josh Kelly I was thinking of. I was confused there. I'm thinking did I just say Josh Kelly or Josh Allen? I think I said Josh Kelly, josh Allen of the Bills. Sorry about that. They put up 44 against them and you know that's a great offense over there. So now they're in the rain and if the Niners win, because the Rams last week put that number up but they had nice dry conditions at SoFi.
Speaker 1:Matthew Stafford looked impeccable. Puka Nakua Cooperuku a Cooper Cup. They were outstanding. Tutu Atwell. Kyron Williams a running back is awesome To me, one of the most underrated players in the NFL.
Speaker 1:So if the Niners win, they're back in the mix and essentially the Rams are kind of tied with the Niners now. In fact, they would be tied with the Niners. I believe that's what it would have been. Yes, it would have been tied Now when the Rams would go home after that huge performance last week with their tails between their legs or their horns down. But instead they ran the ball. They adjusted in the second half when the rain quit and they stuffed it down the Niners' throats by running the ball. Kyron Williams, what was that? 102, 108 yards and 29 carries. The Rams' defense stuffing the Niners' running game and played superb defensively. They're defensive backs. Purdy had a tough time and he threw a bad interception and the Niners dropped like four balls. Debo dropped one. There was two or three defensive plays because in the first half it was hard to throw the ball, so both quarterbacks were struggling, so they had the opportunity.
Speaker 1:But if the Rams win, they essentially in my mind, being a biased Ram fan they're in first place because they've already beat Seattle. The Seattle Seahawks are half a game up, but they're still going to play this weekend. They've got a tough game in Green Bay but the Rams already beat the Seahawks. So they're right there, pretty much, even in my mind and probably in the minds of many other Ram and Seahawks fans. But the Seahawks are of course going to say, yeah, we're half game up, that's okay, we'll see after this weekend. Because now if the Seahawks lose then the Rams are in first place. They might have the same record, but the Rams again, they already beat Seattle, then next week they're at the Jets. So if the Rams win, then that's the position they're in After a 1-4 start.
Speaker 1:The odds of making the playoffs after a 1-4 start, I mean they're stacked against you. Let's just say that. And if the Rams win the game, essentially that's it for the Niners. They would have a 0.1 chance of even making the postseason. Really Maybe it's winning the division, but either way very low. It's just not really going to happen. The odds are just again stacked against them and that's what happened. Niner fans not too happy about that, but they knew the team wasn't playing. It just kind of wasn't their year already. But of course they want their team to win, especially against the Rams and the Seahawks.
Speaker 1:So this will be a game that I will never forget. I always remember the games that I go to and this one I'll remember for a number of reasons Because of everything I just stated and because of the topic I'm going to talk about on my radio show tonight, and I hope you will listen the Pat Walsh Show 7 to 10 pm Pacific, again on KFPK Radio in Sacramento and on your free iHeart app. But during the game last night I saw something I'd never seen before. Quite frankly, never thought I'd ever see it, but that's not true. I have seen it. Antonio Brown there's been others Randy Moss People like to forget about that, but this was bad. So was Antonio Brown, anyone who does this?
Speaker 1:Devondre Campbell of the 49ers quit on the team last night. They needed him at linebacker. They had a couple of players go team last night. They needed him at linebacker. They had a couple of players go down. Last night they needed this guy, devondre Campbell, to play. He says no, thank you. Nah, I quit, I don't want to play against the Rams, I don't want to play. Paid him $5 million this year and this dude walks off the field. It was very clear, apparently, according to reports after the game last night, that this guy was not welcome in the locker room anymore.
Speaker 1:Campbell. He's a starting linebacker for the 49ers, at least most of the season. He's a nine-year NFL veteran, refused to go in the game against the LA Rams in the second half, when his head coach, kyle Shanahan, asked him about it, campbell said hey, he didn't want to play today, I don't want to play. So he left for the sideline for the locker room, didn't return I don't want to play. So he left for the sideline for the locker room, didn't return. I don't want to play today. Nfl teams, you know they put up with a lot of BS, but when you see this dude quit in the middle of a game on national TV or whatever it was on TV, or whatever it was on prime or whatever it was on, that's something that you can't forgive. That Unforgivable, not you know, and, as I said, unforgettable. And Shan had made it clear last night that Campbell will not play for the 49ers ever again.
Speaker 3:What happened with Devondrick Campbell? He didn't play and he went into the locker room at some point.
Speaker 5:Yeah, he said he didn't want to play today.
Speaker 3:Play today Yep the coaching staff.
Speaker 5:He did when I asked him why he didn't want to go in During the game or before. No, that was in the third quarter.
Speaker 6:What happened on the interception? What did you see on that?
Speaker 5:play. I saw them bailing. The guy squatted a little bit and then when Juwan went on his X-ing angle, they bumped him a little bit, which slowed him down and could never catch back up with him, and the bailing corner got it Do you think the weather affected the passing game and Brock in particular? I mean I think it affected both quarterbacks a little bit, but I mean that wasn't just because of the weather.
Speaker 2:What do you think he played?
Speaker 5:I mean, I don't think our offense did very good. Obviously I think Brock made some good plays, missed a couple plays, but no one on offense did good enough.
Speaker 4:Kyle, has that ever happened to you where a player said they didn't want to play in a game?
Speaker 3:No, he got demoted for this game, right, he was not going to play. No, he was going to go in when Dre came out. What was the difference in the defense in the second? The defense was pretty much dominant in the first half. In the second half, did Graham do anything differently? Did you guys get tired at all? What do you think?
Speaker 5:changed in the second half. I thought they converted a couple big plays, especially getting that chunk play to Puka on the post. You get a couple chunk plays and that usually leads to field goals. I thought they ran the ball pretty good but I still thought defense keeping them out of the end zone and everything and holding them 0-3 there in the red zone still gave us every opportunity to win. But we needed to score a couple touchdowns when we had the opportunity and we didn't.
Speaker 3:Drew could see what was that long past. Was Charverius expecting help?
Speaker 5:Yeah, it was a zone dog, so we do have a middle third player, but they ran something where that moved them to the left and Puka ran a good route and made a hell of a play.
Speaker 2:Kyle, on Sunday you said that everyone said that you needed to pretty much win out and that every game was a playoff game.
Speaker 1:They're talking to Kyle Shanahan, the Niners head coach but he makes one more comment when he's asked about. You can tell he's fed up with the Devontae Campbell discussion. I thought you guys were ready to play. I think it might be in the next question or two, where he's had enough. It's the Pat's Peeps podcast 172. Happy Friday, unless you're an Einer fan and I'm not being snide.
Speaker 5:Play better football and challenge the character of our team. Were you released Devontae Campbell? We'll figure out something, but I don't know that right now.
Speaker 2:Did he give you any reason why you didn't want to play today? No, campbell, I mean to hear a player say I don't want to play today. Does that create dissension, especially knowing that at this point in the season, with the type of season that this has started out to be, you kind of need as much camaraderie as possible to be successful? Does that create dissension amongst the team, or did it not really affect anyone? Did no one really notice?
Speaker 5:People notice, but when someone says that you move on, this by the way.
Speaker 1:Oh, go ahead, you don't deal with that anymore. Thank you. This next question? I think it's this question. This is like come on, man, can you phrase the question better? Or it's this question? This is like, come on, man, can you phrase the question better? Or it's just. Well, I'll let you listen.
Speaker 5:First play was to Debo. It was targeted seven times.
Speaker 3:Was there intent to get the ball to Debo? I know there always is, but even more.
Speaker 5:Not that question. I apologize, as usual. I mean I could have gone to three different people. Depends on the coverages and stuff. It depends on the coverages and stuff. They walled the inside slant and it goes to the outside slant. I thought Akella made a good play on it.
Speaker 3:They played a fair amount of press. Man. Why do you think that's been a challenge for the offense to beat?
Speaker 5:this season. I don't think they did a ton. They mixed it up. They were mixing up zone and man. I don't mean to give you all the X's and Oae Campbell. I don't think we got more of it than what they usually do. Sometimes we did it, but not enough.
Speaker 4:Coach, with Devontae opting to not go into the game, what do you need to do to ensure that you don't lose the rest of the locker room?
Speaker 1:That question what do you need to do with Devontae Campbell leaving the game to not lose the rest of the locker room? And I like the way Shanahan responds. He's like hey, man, we haven't lost the locker room, we got a guy that doesn't want to play and, if anything, the locker room as a unit will probably oust this guy and, quite frankly, they have. The news is right now that he's gone.
Speaker 5:I haven't lost anybody. That's somebody who doesn't want to play football. That's pretty simple. I mean, I think our team and myself, we know how we feel about that, so I don't think we need to talk about him anymore.
Speaker 1:There you go. Shanahan Doesn't want to talk about it anymore. Sick of it. I mean, I've never heard of such a thing. I've never, I don't know. I guess, when I say I've never heard of such a thing, I just cited Antonio Brown. I guess this was just a little bit different. Somehow some way, I don't know, they were all bad. Somehow some way, I don't know, they were all bad. Nah, they were all bad, man, I think. Back on the Antonio Brown, that was the worst. I don't know, that's probably the worst, but let's listen to the. Remember when he ripped off his shirt, was he playing for Tampa Bay? Seemed like they were, to my recollection. I might be wrong, but it seemed like he was playing for I don't want to look it up playing for Tampa Bay, and they were playing the Jets in New York, and I think he called I think he ripped off his shirt, quit, waved to the opposing team's fans and then called an Uber or Lyft to the stadium to get a ride back to the hotel.
Speaker 1:Wow, here's some of the 49ers commenting on Devondre Campbell, starting with George Kittle.
Speaker 3:You said you would have liked to know in the moment about what Devondre did, rather than find out after the game. Why is that?
Speaker 4:Because I'm a leader on the team and if that is something that is being a distraction on the sideline, I would love to voice my own opinion in the moment and now we're past that moment, so it doesn't matter what I wish I could have said or wish I could have done, but I don't like distractions on the sideline. I think that's ignorant and I think it's just dumb, it's just stupid, it's very immature. I just don't see how that's a. I just don't see how that's a. I just don't see how you can do something like that to your team.
Speaker 5:George, you are one of the leaders on the team, and this isn't familiar territory. You guys haven't gotten used to losing. What do you want to see from this team as far as effort?
Speaker 4:energy, whatever down the stretch, if indeed you guys are not going to the playoffs. You know what? I'm just going to quote my safety huff. He broke the team down after the game and he said that his mindset and his attitude will be 100% effort on every single day, every practice, every single rep, and he will fight until the wheels fall off, because he's been fighting his ass off to get back on the football field this year and he's only gotten so many reps and he's played really, really good football for us. And he said that he's just going to bring it and he expects everybody around him to also bring it, to bring a fiery energy, to bring the passion, no matter what circumstances are, no matter what percentage or what odds have to happen for us to continue playing later this year.
Speaker 3:But we just have to focus on this one game. Take these three days, get away and show up on.
Speaker 4:Monday with great intent and great effort. Oh, you're way over there. What Dre Grimlock means to the team and what?
Speaker 1:anyhow, yeah, that's what George Kittle had to say about Devondre Campbell. So, needless to say, on tonight's show, on my radio show on a Friday night, we'll continue doing the year in review of 2024, but we're going to talk about quitters, the great moments when someone quit, and there's some great examples, some great examples. I'm thinking of so many of them right now. Before I move on to that, though, if I may, at the complete other end of the rainbow of the spectrum, I'm going to get back into a celebratory mood on this Friday the 13th and tell you how proud I am of my Los Angeles Rams, my team. Since I was a kid. People ask me all the time if I've said this before. I do apologize to you. People always ask me. I got asked yesterday did you grow up in LA? Nope, where are you from? Elk Grove, northern California. How did you become a Ram and Dodger fan? And so I've told the Dodger story and I'll probably tell it again come spring training or whatever. But the reason I became a Ram fan, okay, I may have.
Speaker 1:So, anyhow, I was a kid. I was like five, maybe six, and my dad, I think, probably six. My dad told my brothers and I that we needed to go take a nap. I must have been on a Sunday afternoon and I just my whole life. People love naps. I do not like naps. I don't want to lay down in the middle of the day. I want to be active. I'm missing things. I've never liked them. So I, when my dad said, said kids, I want you to lay down and take a nap. He wanted to watch football. I was already into baseball, didn't really know that much about football as a six-year-old. So my brothers went and laid down and went to bed, took a nap. Well, my dad had an easy chair like a recliner, and this is back in the day when well, this is just back in the day, put it that way and I hid under the table the lamp table or whatever you call, the side table next to my dad's recliner. I hid underneath my dad's watching this football game and I noticed the team. I'm losing my voice after last night's game. I noticed this one team did something good, which I guess was a touchdown, and the team was wearing this horn on the helmet. And I instantaneously that was it, the horn. I went oh my god, thinking I mean, I don't know what I was thinking at six years old, but I just loved the horn and from that point on, all I wanted for Christmas and you couldn't get them back then was a Rams helmet. Couldn't get a Rams helmet. Couldn't get a helmet, wasn't like now when you could go online. Obviously, where's my mom going to buy a Rams helmet back in the 60s? She's not. I wasn't going to say this, but I'll just tell you this. She bought me a helmet. I begged for a helmet, a Ram's helmet, please, please, please, please, please. And Christmas time came and I thought, sheesh. I said, mom, you don't even have to get me any other presents, just a Ram's helmet, please. Just a Ram's helmet Again, where are you going to find that? Where's Santa Claus going to find that?
Speaker 1:I get up up at like 3, 30 or 4 in the morning I'm sure santa brought me a ram's helmet. And I get out and there's, you know, six kids. So there's all these toys and I'm searching and I see a helmet behind the tree. Oh, my god, oh my god. I feel like this, like like it was yesterday. Right now, as I'm thinking about this, I can see this helmet and I go over to the left side of the tree and my heart just drops. It's a plain red helmet and she took these little letters like you'd see, almost on a, like you would see someone use, maybe on a mailbox out in the country, like these sticky letters, gold with black letters. God bless my mother. And she put out Notre Dame on the front of the helmet and for those of you who know, this is a red helmet exactly the same color as USC the Trojans. My mom doesn't know. She's trying her best and knowing that apparently at six years old I like notre dame, my dad liked notre dame, so she put notre dame on the front of the helmet. Now my heart broke.
Speaker 1:That morning for christmas I gave her the biggest hug because I knew she couldn't find one. I didn't say nothing to her like that, I gave her the biggest hug. Mom, thank you for my helmet. I'm sorry, I couldn't really find a Ram's. I love it, mom, I love it and I love you for trying.
Speaker 1:And a period of time goes by I don't know how long. Back then, if you were a kid, one of the things we loved to do was make models. You'd put models together, glue them together, you'd paint them, put the stickers on them. So I was into models at this age. I was probably, I don't know, 10 at this point and so I had some model paint and I asked my mom Mom, I love you. I told her I love you.
Speaker 1:Can I ask you a question, mom? Would you be mad? Or like would it hurt your feelings Because we didn't say offended? I don't think I said would it hurt your feelings Because we didn't say offended? I don't think I said would it hurt your feelings Because I don't want to hurt your feelings, because I love the helmet. Would it be all right with you if I painted my helmet blue and then painted a white horn on the helmet? And I remember her laughing. She said Patrick, it's your helmet and you do whatever you want with it. Son, and I did. I painted it into a ram's helmet. I used to put it on and wear it throughout the neighborhood in Valley High, a large amount community, all these model homes in this new housing community. I'd wear it around the deck. I'll put my Rams on with.
Speaker 1:I'll be wearing all my you know my regular clothes, but I have a Ram zone when I'm walking down the street. Oh God, I've loved him forever. So with having said all of that and bringing a little Christmas into the flow here just before Christmas, I want to celebrate by listening to my man, coach Sean McVay, and his victory speech after last night's rain-soaked divisional huge win over the San Francisco 49ers.
Speaker 6:Hey, I'll tell you what you look at, what this team's about. Hey, stop after stop, unbelievable. Got a couple guys I wanna be able to recognize right here. Four field goals. We need every one of them. Hey, this guy had two sacks. Yeah, was active all day. Where's Kobe Church right now? This guy had two sacks, was active all day. Where's Kobe Church right now? Hey, we're celebrating for goo by ourselves. We got one more right here. This guy had a huge interception. We had to have him. We got him. Awesome. Let's keep working. Family on three. One, two, three Family.
Speaker 1:Awesome, awesome man. Anyhow, it was a great time and again thank you to Chris for making that happen. I greatly appreciate that. God, I can remember sometimes, I'll tell people sometimes I can remember more Rams who were not stars like we're, just forgettable players over the years. I can name more of those, probably on the Rams and most people can name starters on their teams, and that's not to diss people, that's just how obsessed I am. Guys like Todd Kinchens, duvall Love, barry Redden from the Richmond Spiders, elvis Peacock hey man, how you doing man? Hey, merry Christmas man from Elvis man Trunk Candidate. Guys like Cleveland Gary, gaston Green, sean Gilbert, mark Boutte, the late great Charles White, tommy Prothrow, the coach. He'd be over there with his like Bear Bryant-looking hat, like his fedora old school. He's an old dude man. He had glasses, wore a suit, smoking Winstons. You know they show him on TV. Hey, coach Prothrow, this guy's sitting. Coach Prothrow's over there. He's talking to Gabriel, he's sending the plan in right now, the play, and he'll be over there Puffing on a Winston. All right, I pulled a record from a rare 45 collection today. I hit the M section apparently. So here you go.
Speaker 1:Here's a song performed by this group, written by this guy and produced by this producer, christopher Neal. This was the third single released June of 86 from their 1985 self-titled debut album, the third to become a top 40 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. That's pretty good, man Three so far off their self-titled debut album. And as with all of the songs on this record, this song began as a bit of a material on a set of a demo tape, or tapes, that this artist within the band showed to their producer, christopher Neal. According to the artist to the band, the particular fragment had to be the tiniest bit you've ever heard on my tape. If you close your eyes, he says you'd missed it. And Chris Neal picked it out again and said you work, missed it. And Chris Neal picked it out again and said you work on that. Reach number 32 on the Billboard Hot 100, august of 86. The band's like I said last year well, it was the last year's top 40 appearance, so until 1989's next record, the Living Years.
Speaker 1:The lyric there's one born every minute and you're looking at him is a reference to the popular expression. There's a sucker born every minute. Cashbox said it taps a smooth synth sax approach. Sultry summer sound with a fool for love theme. Billboard called it a mild, swaying mood piece. It morphed out of the band Genesis. This is Mike Rutherford. This is Mike and the Mechanics. This is a song called Taken In. It's on the Atlantic label, light blue record. Promotional, not for sale. Two records in the sleeve, mint condition. Take it in. Take it in again, wrapped around the finger of some fair weather friend, caught up in the promises left out. In the end We'll be right back, you know how to love.
Speaker 6:And if you say you understand, I don't believe it. And when you reach out for my hand, I don't believe it. And if you say you take the blame, I don't believe it. And if you say you take the blame, I don't believe it. And if you say that nothing's changed, I don't believe it. Don't believe it.
Speaker 1:I forgot how good this song was. That's pretty good man, I like that.
Speaker 6:That's pretty good man.
Speaker 1:I like that. I am very grateful that you're listening and I appreciate you listening to Pat's Peeps, number 172. We'll see you on the radio tonight. All right, Thank you so much. Merry Christmas time. Well, happy Friday the 13th and Merry Christmas to you.
