Pat's Peeps Podcast

Ep. 181 Today's Peep Relives Monday Night NFL Nostalgia with the Lions and 49ers, Delves into NFL Record Debates, Chuckles at "Quitter's Day," and Honors Jimmy Carter's Poetic Legacy

Pat Walsh

Remember those cozy Monday nights with Howard Cosell bringing life to NFL action? Join me, Pat Walsh, as I revisit those nostalgic days, recounting a recent clash where the resilient Detroit Lions triumphed over the 49ers. With the Lions battling for the NFC's top spot against the Vikings, we explore the franchise's rare shot at glory. Amidst the football highlights, I share the warmth of festive gatherings with friends, painting a picture of simple joys and gratitude that echo through the holiday season.

Travel back with us to December 24, 1989, for a memorable matchup between the Chargers and Broncos, complete with a commentator mix-up worthy of a chuckle. We examine the Philadelphia Eagles' strategic decision about Saquon Barkley's pursuit of Eric Dickerson's rushing record, sparking discussions on the fairness of records across NFL eras. And just for laughs, let's not forget "Quitter's Day" in January, when New Year’s resolutions often fall by the wayside—an amusing nod to our collective challenges with change.

A special moment in my broadcasting career comes alive as we revisit my interview with former President Jimmy Carter about his poetry book, "Always a Reckoning." Reflecting on Carter's legacy, from his presidency to his Southern roots and even his brother Billy's quirky beer venture, I pay tribute to Carter's enduring humility and kindness. Sharing an excerpt from his heartfelt poem "Some Things I Love," I invite you to ponder the beauty of life's simple pleasures. As we honor Carter's decency and integrity, I express gratitude for your ongoing support, welcoming you to join in further reflections and stories in the coming year.

Speaker 1:

welcome back to the bats's Peeps podcast. How are you? How the heck are you doing? It's a Monday night, that's right. It's another nighttime, peep, it's December 30th of 2024, second to the last day of the year. What a year it has been. How, again? I hope you're doing well, wherever you're listening. Sure do appreciate that. I'm Pat Walsh. I also host the Pat Walsh Show, as heard on KFPK Radio in Sacramento and on all your streaming platforms, including your free iHeart app. But here we are, pat's Peeps. What are we at? 181.

Speaker 1:

Today, gorgeous day for a change, because it's been raining big time the last several days. By the way, I hope you had a great Christmas. Did anybody say that? I guess nobody said that. Huh, because I did a podcast on the 26th and 27th, so I don't want to repeat myself, but I think I probably did. But hey, new Year's coming up, right, it's going to be a great new year and I wish all of you a great new year.

Speaker 1:

I'm sitting here, finished one, but today, yes, sunshine, which was a great break from the rain, but it is cold, I'll say that. So I'm snuggled up by my once again by my wood stove as I peer out into my studio windows into the beautiful foothills of Northern California where the stars are out, the moon is out and it's a beautiful cold night. Now I just finished. It was Monday Night Football. I used to love when Howard Cosell would do Monday night football. It would be Frank Gifford, danny Don, don Meredith and Howard Cosell man. That was a good sound. But the Niners and Lions just played in Santa Clara Pretty decent game. I mean the Lions. You know they got some injuries. I'm not going to get too much into the football tonight but just to let you know, the 49ers did come up on the losing end of this, 40-34 to the Detroit Lions. You know the Detroit Lions and the Vikings will square off next week. As I say, I'm not going to get into too much football, I go right into it. You know what. That's what it is. So they'll square off next week. The Vikings and the Lions I know my brother is going crazy They'll square off for the top seed. Brother is going crazy, they'll square off for the top seed.

Speaker 1:

Now, as far as I know, detroit has never been the top seed in the NFC. I mean forever. They have been a I mean just not a good franchise. I mean being honest. Everyone knows that. I mean, they've just been a. It's just been misery for Lion fans over the years. But now here they are and they have a chance to get the number one seed at home field advantage in the NFC playoffs. But so do the Vikings. And I got to tell you, you know, sam Darnold, good for you, man, good for you, dude, quarterback of the Vikings. And I got to tell you, you know, sam Darnold, good for you, man, good for you, dude, quarterback of the Vikings. This guy bounced around could never really find a home. He's found one so far in Minnesota. I know my brother's just going crazy, like I said.

Speaker 1:

So that's next week, the 49er season done. I don't know what's going to happen with them. They have some guys that are I don't know. Just, you know there's questions. Maybe Brock Purdy. What do you do with Brock Purdy? Do you sign the guy for a long term? Just a lot of questions. If you look up and down their roster, some guys are getting getting older. We'll see what happens with all of that.

Speaker 1:

Speaking of the NFL, I'm very happy because this weekend well, actually last night had a great time. Thank you to Lori, don't call me Wolfharner. Thank you to Sherry Cunningham and Darlene with a Y, who seems to make every podcast. You know what, though? You know what that means. That means that you're actually friends with this person, and how can you not be? She's delightful. Anyhow, we got together last night at Darlene's house and we played some board games. We played Aggravation so fun, and thank you to those ladies. I love this time of year where you can just do that. I've always liked board games or playing cards, rummy, what have you, so that was nice and comfortable, and then we're watching the game. In the background.

Speaker 1:

You had the commanders. I still want to call them the Redskins. Sorry, give me a break. There's nothing about being racist. Look it up. Indians want that name back, they want the logo back. They've got a petition out there to try to make that happen. They're like hey, man, come on, we like this.

Speaker 1:

The Washington Redskins were a very proud franchise, but, without getting into all of that, now they're the commanders. Whatever, and by virtue of their victory last night over the Falcons and the Rams' victory this weekend over the Cardinals, that means the Rams are the NFC West champions. So I'm very again. I probably I haven't mentioned this because I don't think right Just happened Saturday and yesterday, sunday. So I'm really proud because this team started one and four when they were injured and now they are the champions of the NFC West. Nfc West so you get the Vikings in there, the Packers will be in there, detroit, the Rams, the Buccaneers how about Baker Mayfield? Guy threw five touchdown passes. Everyone thought this dude was washed up. No, come on, this guy looks good.

Speaker 1:

I do want to mention that in my last I guess it was the last podcast I did one of the last ones I did I was talking about it was, yeah, the last one, number 180. I was talking about Greg. It was, yeah, the last one, number 180. I was talking about Greg Gumbel passing away, speaking of broadcasters, and I did a little tribute to Greg Gumbel, who was just a remarkable career, good guy and just I wanted to clarify and correct myself.

Speaker 1:

I was naming a variety of broadcasters that I thought were great at their job and I really missed, and I mentioned, like Pat Summerall and some of those guys, john Madden. Well, there was another guy and I said Charlie Taylor, which I didn't mean to say Charlie Taylor, I meant to say Charlie Jones. Charlie Taylor was a receiver for the Redskins back in the 70s. But Charlie Jones, he was a sportscaster for NBC and ABC, and that's who I meant to say, and he passed away back in 08. And that's who I meant to say, and he passed away back in 08. But Charlie Jones was a really good broadcaster and his voice to me was synonymous with the AFC. Whereas Summerall and Madden were synonymous with the NFC, charlie Jones was synonymous. His voice was synonymous with the AFC.

Speaker 2:

Good afternoon everybody, and welcome to Jack Murphy Stadium here in San Diego, where the Chargers will be hosting the Denver Broncos. This game is meaningless as far as the playoffs are concerned, but there are a lot of other games that mean a lot of things today there he is with broncos already in the playoffs with merlin olsen.

Speaker 1:

The great why you have Denver, san Diego, because again the voice synonymous and Merlin Olsen, by the way, rest in peace. Part of the fearsome foursome but is Charlie and Merlin are talking this. This is on NBC Live. This is probably back, who knows? Let's see this was December 24th of 89, christmas Eve 89. Jack Murphy Stadium in San Diego. Remember they used to play there. And when they start to talk on the screen, this is what it says.

Speaker 2:

Good afternoon everybody, and welcome to Jack Murphy Stadium here in San Diego, where the Chargers will be hosting the Denver Broncos. This game is meaningless as far as the playoffs are concerned.

Speaker 1:

So where Charlie Jones is, it says Dick Enberg, and where Merlin Olsen is, it says Bill Walsh. So there you go, right, everyone's entitled to mistakes.

Speaker 3:

There are a lot of other games that mean a lot of things today, merlin, there certainly are Charlie Broncos already in the playoffs. They've clinched home field in the AFC. But around the league, as we go to the scoreboard, you're going to see that there are a lot of battles left to be decided. Some have already been decided, but some still hanging up for grabs.

Speaker 1:

and yeah, I just wanted to mention those guys because I said charlie taylor's charlie jones, the great charlie jones. Uh, one other thing in the NFL that I just want to mention too is a situation that is going on with the Philadelphia Eagles and in particular Saquon Barkley. They're running back. By the way, nice uniforms last week, eagles, you got to stick with those instead of those more modern ones. Those were nice. Those were like Randall Cunningham throwbacks really nice, that interesting green.

Speaker 1:

But the point is you have Saquon Barkley there running back. The man is 101 yards shy of. I think it's either tying or breaking my man Eric Dickerson's record. Now, on a personal note, as a Ram diehard, I don't want anyone breaking Eric's record. Okay, I don't want to see that. Now, saquon Barkley's a good guy.

Speaker 1:

But the question becomes because this game doesn't even matter to the Eagles do you play your starters and try to win the game? Try to get this guy there. At least get him in there, get him the record. If you're going to put him in there, you've got to protect him. So you have to play your starters. If you're going to put Saquon in to try to get him that record and then pull him out, you take that chance, because if you lose him or any of the other starters, obviously that's not going to bode well for the playoffs. So I'm wondering what they're going to do about that. Will they start this guy and he'll make the decision? I'm sure. Well, I don't know, I'm sure they'll talk to him about it, see what he thinks about it, but I'll think ultimately the coach will end up making that decision for him. But nonetheless, congratulations.

Speaker 1:

Someone said to me oh no, that's not even going to be legit to have to defeat I mean, excuse me, to eclipse Eric Dickerson's record when he's doing this in 17 games versus Eric doing it in 16 games. To which my prompt reply was well, I do understand what you're saying and yes, there is a point to that. However, if we're going to use that very same logic, then you can say that Eric Dickerson's record is not truly legit because there was another guy before him who eclipsed 2,000 yards in a single season and he did it in 14 games. You know who that was. I'm sure many of you listening do Over 2,000 yards in 14 games. That person and I will say this Arguably, in my opinion, the greatest running back the NFL's ever seen.

Speaker 1:

Now, we've seen a lot of them. Huge Dickerson fan, you have Walter Payton. You just go down the line. You know Barry Sanders, herschel I'm not Herschel Walker, but I mean there's just so many of them.

Speaker 1:

This guy arguably may have been the shiftiest and the best. Now, shifty, of course that might go to Barry Sanders, but I think this guy was equally as shifty, but he doesn't get his due. And the best, now, shifty, of course that might go to Barry Sanders, but I think this guy was equally as Shifty, but he doesn't get his due. And you know why he doesn't get his due. Some of you are going to like what I say, others may not. I don't think he gets his due because he went on to murder two people in cold blood, ron Goldman and Nicole Brown Simpson. Oj Simpson with the Buffalo Bills, over 2,000 yards rushing in 14 games. Go back and look at his highlights. You know it's a situation where people don't want to acknowledge it that much because of what happened later with OJ Simpson. And I get it as he rots in hell. But without going further down that road, I'm just making the point that Saquon, he could beat Dickerson's record. I mean he could probably do it 101 yards, what we went through 167 this weekend so he could do it, but you want to take that chance. So that'll be a bit of a controversy.

Speaker 1:

I think Quitters Day is coming up. They say Quitters Day and I'll talk more about this on my radio show. Quitters Day is, and I just found more about this on my radio show. Quitter's day is, and I just found out about this. Quitter's day is the second jan uh, second friday in january, and that's the date that apparently those folks who those of us who make new year's resolutions we decide that's it, we're done. That's enough. The second friday in january. You could look it up. It's quitter's day, so I'll probably bring that up on my show when I get back. It's a little early for that. I don't want to talk about that necessarily prior to the new year itself. I just feel great about 2025. I won't even say too much about this.

Speaker 1:

I had such a good meeting today. Oh my gosh. I am going to show you guys how we're going to save some money. I had such a great meeting. I can't wait to tell you about our businesses and things. Something else I wanted to mention. I was looking. This popped up, since we were talking about. This will be my last thing. Where did it go? Do I have it? Let me see, this will be my last thing.

Speaker 1:

On sports-related stuff, you know everyone's using this AI. I did an interview with my brother today. We had a great conversation on a podcast that we're going to be releasing soon. He is the CEO, founder of AI Lending and we're going to be doing great things for local people here, and so in thinking about that, I thought, well, I wonder what AI would say about if I said can you tell me? I said I have my radio show, the Pat Walsh Show. Can you tell me about the Pat Walsh Show? Now, this, I was fascinated by this. Listen, can you tell me about the Pat Walsh Show? Here's what it says the Pat Walsh Show is a radio program hosted by Pat Walsh. The Pat Walsh Show is a radio program hosted by Pat Walsh okay, so far, so good on news radio KFBK in Sacramento, california that's exactly right Airing from 7 pm to 10 pm weekdays Exactly, here's when things go awry In AI's description, showing that it truly is artificial intelligence.

Speaker 1:

It primarily focuses on sports talk, with Pat discussing local teams like the Sacramento Kings, as well as the broader sports news and analysis. Now I bring that up because I have sat here for what we're 18 minutes in and I brought up the NFL. But if you listen to my radio show, I do not do a sports show. If you listen to my podcast, I don't do a sports podcast. It's just that right now, that's one of the things. That's that's in life. You know, one of the things that people are just kind of focusing on paying attention to. Perhaps we should be paying attention to some other things. Maybe this is a distraction, but guess what Is there anything wrong with a distraction that makes you feel good? You know Generations of great sports fans. It's what we do. Fans, it's what we do. But I'm not a sports show, even though I've talked about it. You know that, like, if you, I'm looking to. I was talking about Zappa the other day, I was talking about Deep Purple, I was talking about Fruitcake on 178. I'm looking. So it's not all about sports, but listen to this. So I focus on local teams like the Kings. I never talk about basketball on my show, on any of my shows. What I just said is probably the most I talk about basketball.

Speaker 1:

Key points about the Pat Walsh Show from AI Host Pat Walsh, a veteran broadcaster in Sacramento with a background in sports reporting. That's true, I was the sports guy Station news radio KPK true Time slot 7 to 10 pm on a Friday. True, these are bullet points Focus sports talk covering local Sacramento teams and broader sports teams. No, and here's reputation. They threw my rep up there, considered one of the top sports talk shows in the sacramento area. You know, it's funny, a couple of years ago I won best sportscaster of the year in sacramento magazine. I hadn't even been the sports guy for five years, so that was pretty remarkable to me, I have to say I had to mention that. That's just kind of funny to me.

Speaker 1:

On the not so funny spectrum here, we lost Jimmy Carter, 100 years old. You know, we can talk about politics and be divisive about politics and people can say whatever they want about whatever president they want. You know Jimmy Carter well. You know he wasn't strong, or Jimmy Carter was this or Jimmy Carter was that. Whatever you want to say about this man, I tell you I'm sad to see him go because for me, whether or not I agreed with his policies and I was young then in terms of, you know, I was just trying to work hard and do the right thing in life and it wasn't like I was focusing on the world and all what was happening in the world. Of course I knew, I've always paid attention. But to go and say, well, you know there's this policy or that policy and go down the list and tell you all the things I may have agreed with or disagreed with, of course I remember he did some great things and there were some things that didn't go as well. We'll leave it at that. But I will say this about Jimmy Carter To me he seemed like a decent human being. He seemed like he cared about people. Didn't he do like Habitats for Humanity or whatever? Didn't he build homes for the impoverished, didn't he? I mean, he just seemed to me to be a very caring human being, a decent man, and that's what I'll always take away from our former president, jimmy Carter a loyal man to his wife. He lived longer than any us president. He died in Plains, georgia. He's the only Georgian ever ever elected to the white house Served one term.

Speaker 1:

Ronald Reagan, you know, of course we all know the story. Yeah Well, pat, with him in Reagan. You know, of course we all know the story. Yeah well, pat, with him in there. You know, the Iran held the hostages. Believe me, I followed all of that. I followed all of that. So, even though I was a young dude, I was up on all of this and that was also. I don't want to get into that. But yeah, as soon as Reagan took office, man, the hostages were released. But again, I don't really want to go down that road. It's just a thought that I had.

Speaker 1:

He forged peace between Israel and Egypt, which again was overshadowed by that Iran hostage crisis. His beautiful wife Rosalyn. They had a great reputation, a lot of philanthropic causes. He gained appointment to the US Naval Academy, graduated, joined, the Navy submarine branch. In seven years he worked his way into Rickover's Boys, the elite unit of the nuclear submarine fleet. On and on and on. He was a peanut farmer. I still remember his brother, billy Carter. Remember Billy Beer. Billy was kind of an embarrassment. He was kind of an embarrassment to Jimmy Billy Beer.

Speaker 1:

Jimmy Carter was elected governor in 1970. And then on his inauguration day, rather than driving past the crowds in an armored limo, he and his wife emerged from the car with his daughter, amy at the time. And so they're just walking down Pennsylvania Avenue holding hands and waving the way you used to be able to do it in America. Now you have to have. I don't want to get into all that either, but he promoted human rights on and on and on.

Speaker 1:

Now I want to say this in 19, oh gosh, this would have been 1995. 1995, I was a producer for another show. At that time I was not the host, I was the producer and for the Jeff Katz show, mornings on Talk 650 KSTE in Sacramento, which is now our sister station at KFBK, and I thought you know Jimmy Carter President Carter, former president has released a book and this book has become very popular. It's called Always a Reckoning. It was released March 28th of 95. And it was a collection of Jimmy Carter's poetry.

Speaker 1:

And I thought, you know, if I were a good producer, I would try to get Jimmy Carter on to talk about his book. What are the odds? Right? So I made a phone call, whatever, followed up with a phone call, whatever, and the next thing, you know, I get a phone call back and I said how's this, mr Walsh? I said yes, it is, and I don't remember who the person on the other end was. But they said we'd like to set up an interview with Jimmy Carter and I said what really, I was very excited Really. So we set the date and I'll never forget when he called, or I called him, or whatever it was, I mean they must have called me and I had the opportunity to speak to him while we, while he was waiting to go on the air, because you know it was before, he was a couple of minutes early for the interview. So we, we talked. I couldn't believe it.

Speaker 2:

He was so nice, this man you know, he was just so nice I can't even do the impersonation.

Speaker 1:

I don't want to out of respect, but he was so. He was a very gentle, seeming like a very gentle soul. We talked about his book and about poetry and he then took a copy of this book Always a Reckoning and he autographed it for me and I still have that to this day and it's just wow, that's how down to earth this guy was. If I might, I would like to give you a little poem from jimmy carter's book, from the book always a reckoning. From the book Always a Reckoning.

Speaker 1:

Jimmy wrote this one, so it's called Some Things I Love your enchantment in a lonely wood, the fight in color of a rainbow trout, my in-basket empty and a new good book, binoculars fixed on a strange new bird, sadie's point in a covey of quail, the end of a six-mile run in the rain, blue slope, soft snow, fast run, no fall, a dovetail joint without a gap, children, grandchildren coming in our front door the same ones leaving in a day or two and life till. What rhymes with breath takes me from all things I share with you. On that note, you know, I usually end on a nice fun record or what have you? I'm going to leave it at that today. Okay, say, rest in peace to Jimmy Carter, a man who stood for decency. Thanks for listening. We'll see you on Pat's Peeps 182.
