Ep. 230 Happy First Day of Spring, A Father Remembers his Son On His Birthday and Honors His Rock and Roll Spirit with a Rare 1987 Promotional Copy of Guns N' Roses' "Welcome to the Jungle"
Some days carry the weight of both sadness and hope, creating a tapestry of emotions that define our human experience. On this first day of spring, I'm celebrating my son Timothy Patrick Walsh's birthday while navigating the raw grief of his recent passing just 18 days ago. The sunshine illuminating the Northern California foothills outside my studio window mirrors the way Timothy's memory continues to shine brightly in my life.
Timothy possessed extraordinary artistic talent—a family trait that runs through generations. While I express myself through pencil drawings, he chose tattoos as his canvas, each marking telling part of his story. His infectious laugh still echoes in my memory, a sound that could fill any room with genuine joy. Today's podcast honors his rock and roll spirit by playing a rare 1987 promotional copy of Guns N' Roses' "Welcome to the Jungle"—a fitting tribute to a young man whose potential was immense but whose journey ended too soon.
Yesterday brought meaningful connections at a Presbyterian church in Fair Oaks, where I spoke to a singles group celebrating St. Patrick's Day. The warmth of community provided temporary respite from grief, reminding me how human connection sustains us during difficult times. Learning to balance loss with living represents one of life's greatest challenges, yet finding moments of gratitude amid grief remains essential to healing.
The podcast also celebrates mentorship through sharing Scott Robinson's journey from curious learner to capable radio host. After eighteen months of training, Scott successfully hosted the final two hours of my radio show—an achievement worth recognizing in an industry where pathways to becoming a talk show host have nearly disappeared.
As spring brings renewal to the world around us, this episode explores how we can honor memories while still embracing life's continuing journey. Whether you're experiencing grief or supporting someone through theirs, I hope these reflections offer comfort and perspective on finding light even during our darkest moments.
welcome to the pats peeps podcast. We're back after a one-day hiatus. I don't like having hiatuses. Sounds like a flower, doesn't it? Aren't my hiatuses looking beautiful, doris? Thank you.
Speaker 1:Hey, it's a Thursday, it is the first day of spring, it is March the 20th and, looking out my studio windows into the beautiful foothills of Northern California, it's very green and the sun's out. It's actually a little bit warmer today too, you know, and not as many clouds. It's kind of been a mixture of clouds and sun. Anyhow, delightful, it's the first day of spring. Two things I want to bring up here On Pat's Peeps 230. By the way, allow me to introduce myself. My name is Pat Pat Walsh. I host the Pat Walsh Show at KFPK Radio in Sacramento or on KFPK 93.1 FM and 1530 AM, and heard live everywhere on your free iHeart app, just, of course, like this very podcast, all of your streaming platforms. Thank you for being a part. You know what, even taking a day off yesterday, which I'll explain, you know what? We've maintained our audience. Sorry about that. I don't like to miss. I can see in our totals that I did miss a day, but that's okay. You, I can see in our totals that I did miss a day, but that's okay. You know we've done 19 episodes in 30 days. The only time I really don't do it is on the weekends or on a day like yesterday. But again, I will explain.
Speaker 1:Here's the other thing Not only is it the first day of spring, which is my favorite season, a lot of people, you know, fall comes and I love fall, don't get me wrong, I do, I love fall. Don't get me wrong, I do, I love fall. You know you get Monday Night Football Bum, bum, bum, bum, bum, bum, bum, bum, bum. Howard Cosell Well, there was a flashback Bum, bum, bum, bum. Anyhow, danny Don, frank, gifford, old school. But you know, I like fall, halloween, all that stuff, everything looks orange and cool, dying off. But I love springtime because it's green man. You look out, everything's blossoming and the flowers and it's just a beautiful time of year. It improves my mood. I mean, I'm usually in a pretty good mood. But you know how it is. Everyone likes when the sun first comes out. Now we'll start complaining about it here in a couple of months, but it's hot. I like the heat too, but anyhow, the other thing today is I want to say happy, heavenly birthday to my son, timothy Patrick Walsh who, as many of you know, passed away this month and it has now been what 18 days or something like that, since Tim's passing. Today's his birthday.
Speaker 1:So just shy of his birthday and and I obviously miss him tremendously, I was looking through my super rare 45 collection today and I pulled out a couple of 45s and the first one I pulled out I thought, well, no, okay, that's a good old classic from 1969. Maybe I'll throw that on there. And then I realized I was going to be talking about my son Timothy, and my son Timothy I don't think he'd want to play this one. I don't think he'd want me to play this one. Not that it's a bad song, it's a good song. I'll play it tomorrow. It's a good song and he might like it. Maybe he would like it better than the other one that I chose. I don't know. I just know this Tim had a rock and roll attitude. The one song I would say is more pop. And then I pulled out this other record and, by the way, I have to say this is let me pull it out of the sleeve here. Honestly, I don't think this has ever been pulled out of this record sleeve, and this is a really cool record to have on a 45. It's a little dusty but, oh my gosh, it's in beautiful shape, perfect mint condition, just has a little dust on it. But it's pretty cool to have this particular 45 from 1987. Think about that.
Speaker 1:There was a new band, rock band that came out in 1987. I still remember when I first heard this song, I first, and I still remember when I first heard about the band from my brother Jim. We were at a softball game when he was playing for Campbell soup, isn't that a? Is that a weird memory to have? And he played it for us on a cassette. I remember that too, man. My brother Steve and I we went out to watch him play softball one sunny day and before the game he's like man, you got to listen to this new band Because we all like rock. And he put this on a cassette and played it and we're like dang, all right, all right, that is different. So think about that 1987. So, tim, he'd want me to play the rock thing versus the pop, not that he was opposed to that. But I just want to say this about my son, timothy Talented guy man, a talented young man.
Speaker 1:He could draw, I don't know what it is about my family. For some reason, we have this gene where we can draw. I can draw. Pencil drawing is my favorite I'm really going to do. I've actually sold some of my art I'd like to be able to show. My goal is to really do more art. To be honest with you here, if I can get this Pat's Peeps going and represent these businesses, you know and, by the way, I saw that we're growing you guys are actually going to Pat's Peeps, thank you, please go to Pat's Peeps and support the local businesses and get all these free. You know, all these great deals, but I want to be able to support the businesses and do this and then go on little adventures and bring them to you. You know, and I just want to be able to. I just tie all of this stuff in, you know, tie everything in to this big fun Pats Peeps community. You know, that's what we're, that's really what we're trying to do.
Speaker 1:I was going somewhere with that. What was I talking about? I was going somewhere with that. What was I talking about? I was going somewhere with that. Then I started thinking about the local business and what have you? But yeah, I was talking about my son, Tim, very talented, oh, drawing, yeah, drawing. I want to show you some of my drawings. I've sold some of them. A John Lennon painting that I did. I sold just just some things and and I was very proud of that my sister can draw.
Speaker 1:My mother was an outstanding drawer. My son, timothy, my I see that my, my niece, shelby, is an amazing artist, not to mention a Zap the fan I I saw. She showed me a picture. She said Uncle Pat, you got to see my drawing. I looked at that. It was Frank Zappa in that red, white and blue God Bless America hat. I was like you've got to be kidding me, shelby, I love this. Then she told me she named her little puppy Zappa. She's endeared herself to me, to Uncle Pat, but anyhow. So we, for whatever reason, we have this gene where we can draw.
Speaker 1:And Tim was such a good drawer and he used his. If you saw the picture I posted on Facebook today, he chose to do his in tattoos. Man, this kid was covered in tattoos. Yours truly, zippo on the tattoos. I got no problem with tattoos, just not my thing. I've contemplated it in the past, but you know, like tough Irish guy, some shamrocks or something. Not that I'm a tough Irish guy by any stretch. I'm not saying that. I'm not Tim Wall's tough. You know what I mean. Ha, ha, come on now. Come on, I'm not that tough, I'm not Tim Wall's tough, you know what I'm saying. That's tough, that's masculine. But anyhow, tim, he could do the tattoos he could draw. He's got some art from him that I should show. I should take a picture and perhaps show this on social media.
Speaker 1:Tim loved to laugh. I could make him laugh so hard. I could make. I can hear him right now. I can hear him now. I can hear his laugh. I can make him laugh so hard. Man, I missed him. I wish we had more of that.
Speaker 1:You know I, you know more of the memories were centered around that is the just the cutest baby I ever saw in my life. I know I'm being but straight up bias and all that, but honestly, this point I've seen a lot of babies. I've seen some babies on a show recently. I don't want to be mean, no, never mind. You know that. That a seinfeld episode. You gotta see the baby. Yeah, kramer freaks out. Yeah, it's breathtaking anyhow, uh, whatever, I've seen a lot of cute babies, but I, I just gotta say, tim, oh my god, when I was, when I was again just a teenager, and uh, and tim came into this world, man, we and uh, he just I'd look at him say, jesus, man, really, that that's my baby, that's a cute baby right there, oh my gosh, wow, anyhow, I just wanted him.
Speaker 1:And he knew music really well, he could play sports. He was just a talented guy, you know, and I am going to miss him. He had so much potential and any time I was around him it was just a. I just I don't know. I just wish things could have gone a little differently and perhaps we could have channeled some of that great talent of his into maybe some more productive things and really made a name for himself. But I miss you, timothy, I love you so much. March 20th is his birthday, timothy, I love you so much. March 20th is birthday 1979. I was just a kid, I was just a teenager, but I still loved him. A little bundle of joy, good man, just a troubled young man.
Speaker 1:Yesterday I missed the podcast because of this reason, because my friend Bridget, who is just an incredibly wonderful human being, bridget, I know she doesn't listen to my podcast. She would. If you know, for some reason there's a generation of people that don't seem to. They're not quite sure how to get a podcast, and that's okay. Bridget is a little older and she is one of the sweetest people to walk this planet. I adore her, this beautiful woman, and she has this group of this church group, and this is like maybe the third or fourth time that this church group this lovely. In fact, I think they were on one of my first Pats Peeps podcast, if my recollection serves me correctly. I think they were on one of my earliest podcasts.
Speaker 1:And so they invite me to come out to lunch and they invite me to be a speaker at their luncheon. And it just so happened that you know St Patrick's Day was what? Three days ago, and they love that. My name is Patrick and I was named after St Patrick, so they had asked me if I would be willing to come out again and speak to their group and have lunch with them and just kind of, you know, just talk, speak to their group and have lunch with them and just kind of, you know, just talk, tell tales about going to Ireland and Italy and Germany and some of these places I've been blessed to go. So I say, heck, yeah, I'm going to get to do that, absolutely. This Anita's out there.
Speaker 1:All of these wonderful people I shouldn't start mentioning people because I'll leave someone off the list, you know, excuse me. So anyhow, I go out to the it was the Presbyterian church there in Fair Oaks, I don't know if it's still called the Presbyterian, it doesn't really matter wonderful church and had lunch with these wonderful people. And so what they did is they made a. They had a St Patrick's Day event. Now I didn't realize they were exactly going to do that. I didn't know everyone was going to be dressed in green for St Patrick's Day on the 19th of March. I walked in there. It was so festive and so just happy of these people.
Speaker 1:The seniors group it's a singles group, it's a, it's a uh um, a singles group. And I've gotten to know some of these folks over the years of my visits out there and here they are sitting in green. They've got shamrocks everywhere. They make corn, beef and cabbage, you know, and I'm sitting there, I'm trying to eat my corn, beef and cabbage. I really couldn't eat because I was so busy talking to these wonderful people that I really never had time to eat. I did get a little bit of corned beef and cabbage. It was delightful, thank you. So my only regret is that we didn't take a picture no photos. For some reason no one did that. It was kind of a shame. So I think I might have to go back out there and visit them again in the very near future so we can just take a big group photo. That would have been lovely yesterday because, like I say, everyone was dressed in green and there was just a lot of people there to celebrate St Patrick's Day. So thank you to that St Patrick's Day. So thank you to that group.
Speaker 1:Yesterday was just kind of one of those days. By the way, it was a day where. So I went out there and did that. Then after that if you don't mind me sharing this I mean I don't mean to bore you with it you know, like I say, my cousin Richard did I mention that that he passed away on St Patrick's Day, very close, richard and Linda. I did, obviously, because I talked about our families Anyhow. So Linda, now she was going to be by herself because Richard's daughters were leaving for Texas and Seattle and what have you. And so, coming back from there. I just dropped by to give her a big old, burly hug, let her know that the family is there for her. She was in a good state of mind yesterday and then last night was a. It was an interesting night on my radio show in that I had been.
Speaker 1:I've been training Scott Robinson. He's one of the hosts of Beyond the Humidor. They have a podcast. Hey, scott and Greg and Larry have this, this podcast and Scott, they're all great guys. Larry is a Pat's Peeps Paradise Signs. Please, please, if you go to Pat's Peeps you'll see Paradise Signs. That's Larry's business. Greg's a great guy. So, anyhow, they have this podcast and I've been training Scott for about a year and a half now. He comes in one night a week, on a Tuesday, and he wanted to know about radio. He had the desire to be a talk show host.
Speaker 1:And when you have a desire to be a radio talk show host, there are just not any avenues left, except for one avenue. Can I call it Pat Walsh Avenue? I mean, just for the sake of this discussion, because it's really true, kfpk Avenue. Then, if nothing else, because I don't want to call it I Heart Avenue, sorry, well, I better, okay, I Heart Avenue, just in case they're listening. Love you, I Heart. Anyhow, if you love me back though here's my only beef if you love me back, you'd promote my podcast. You know you got Charlamagne, the God and all these people that you're, but that you're promoting their pot.
Speaker 1:Now I'm see I'm getting off target. Now I'm getting off topic. Promote mine anyhow. See, I'm to lose track of what I was saying. But anyhow, scott Robinson, so he comes in, I say Pat Walsh Avenue, because there's not any avenues to get to become a talk show host these days. There's just not, there's no, there is, there's no like where are you going to do that? They're just not. They're not advertising for, hey, we're looking for a talk shows there. You don't find a lot of that anymore, it's very rare.
Speaker 1:So but hey, I happen to know someone in the business and Scott showed a desire to do it. And then some people will show a desire or they'll show a curiosity or they'll show a curiosity. But it's one thing to show the curiosity and it's another thing to be dedicated to it and show up over and over and over, which Scott did over the last year and a half or so, and I taught him everything I knew about being a talk show host. Whether I know anything or not, that's up to you to decide, but I've been on the air coming up on 12 years with this show and I taught him everything that I could possibly teach him. And last night I relinquished my show to him for the final two hours. I did the first hour and then I set it up for him. Hey, scott Robinson is going to be joining you for the next couple of hours. So if you were listening to my show last night, if you were wondering well, hey, where did Pat go? Did Pat have something to do? Because you're so nice, sometimes people are worried about me. I hope he's okay. You know he's grieving or he's, you know. Whatever, I'm okay, I'm good.
Speaker 1:We just wanted to give Scott an opportunity. It's a difficult job when you've never done it and it's even more difficult when you're a feel-in talk show host or, as I like to call them, a guest host for my show. Whether it's Bruce BC, bruce Campbell, scott Robinson now coming up, we got the okay. They liked him, everyone liked him. He's a good man. Or whether it was Sweet Lou Gallagher, who we all miss very, very much. Also in heaven, sweet Lou, god man, these are all good men, respectable. And so Scott got to do his second show last night and I guided him through let's just say I helped to guide him through that and he did a great job. Scott, I'm very, very, very proud, very proud of you, proud of you. So he will be filling in guest hosting for me when we go to the Italian Riviera, coming up on my sister Michelle's birthday on April 3rd. For two weeks We'll be going to the Italian Riviera and Scott will be filling in, along with Bruce Campbell, bc, in my stead. By the way, I'd just like to remind you, because we are getting more listeners now.
Speaker 1:I could not encourage you any more than this. If you would please go to patspeepscom there's a picture of my brother, tim. I've been telling you about his AI lending. How would you like to get a free trip to Europe? Two free trips, round trip, everything included. You know Tim has given away because I'm in this conservative tours. We're at Pat's Peeps Group at Conservative Tours, like I've been telling you, and Tim decided that if you're going to go and find a house, if you're going to look for a home, if you're going to buy a home in wherever you're at wherever you're listening to me, and if you need a lender, if you just go to my brother, Tim, if you trust me, I would ask and encourage you to trust him, because he's a good guy. I trust him so much. I would never tell you about him, but he's going to give you your appraisal feedback. If you use AI Lending. Just go to ailendingcom or look him up, google him. They'll give you your appraisal feedback, which no one does. And not only that, we're going to pull out of the first 100 people that go with them. We're going to pull a name out of the hat. Two people are going to get. Well, one person will win a trip for two to one of these trips with conservative tours. So I did want to remind you of that.
Speaker 1:What else is going on? Oh yeah, I got to do taxes before we go to Europe, before we go to Italy. On the third, it's tax time. I don't know about you, man, I dread taxes. I dread taxes. I don't know what it is, I'm just. There's a lot of things I enjoy in this world, but doing taxes, the process of doing taxes. I don't mind paying my taxes, I just don't like I have someone that does them, just all the prep work. There's something I don't like about it. That's what I know. A lot of you are dealing with that as well. There's just something about it Never look forward to it. I guess back, way back when, when you used to sometimes get some kind of a refund at least there was that Boy. Those were the good old days. So I got to deal with that before I head out to Italy.
Speaker 1:I just want to play this song for my son today, and again, this is a rocker Pat's peeps 230. There's a lot more going on, but I just want to keep it to sort of the positive things today, you know. Taxes not so positive. You know, not so positive. Losing my cousin not so positive, but the fact to go to see Linda and that she's doing better was positive. The fact that Scott did so well on the show positive. Losing my cousin not so positive, but the fact to go to see Linda and that she's doing better was positive. The fact that Scott did so well on the show positive. The fact that I got to see everyone at this church group yesterday and we had the divine time celebrating St Patrick's Day and celebrating together positive my son's birthday today. Love you, son, I miss you. Obviously not positive that I just lost him, but it is his birthday and spring, first day of spring, lots of positive things.
Speaker 1:Now, when I start saying positive, is this song positive? I don't know if it is really. The other song would have probably been more the poppy one might have flowed with the more positivity I don't know. It's not negative, I don't think. Anyhow I'm going to play it. So this is a song, this is a rocker, 1987. Have you thought about what band it could be? What band came out in 87 that was a rocker? Well, think about it. I mean, this is probably in my estimation. I could be wrong, but at least in my estimation, the last hard rock band that came out before Nirvana came out and then it twisted things. So this band, it's an American rock band.
Speaker 1:This is the opening track on their debut album from 1987. It was released as the album's second single, though it was initially in the UK. They released it as the second single September of 87, then again in October of 88, this time including the US, where it went to number seven on the Billboard Hot 100, went to number 24 on the UK singles chart. The 1987 release, the seven-inch record which I am holding in my hand was backed with a live version. Now, let me look at this because, again, that would be the commercial release. I'm holding in my hand, the promotional version. It says right there black label, geffen Records promotion, not for sale. There's that song as I look at it. See, this is very rare. Let me see this is super rare because the original 7-inch or the 45 that was released, had the live version of an ACDC song, whole Lotta Rosie, which is one of my favorite songs by ACDC Live. Isn't that a trip. But on my record, this promotional copy, it's the same song on both sides.
Speaker 1:The singer of this band wrote the lyrics while visiting a friend in Seattle speaking of Nirvana. It's a big quote. It's a big city but at the same time it's still a small city compared to LA and the things that you're going to learn. It seemed a lot more rural up there, he said. I just wrote how it looked to me. You know, someone comes to town and they want to find something. They can find whatever they want.
Speaker 1:One of the guitarists in the band summarizes the song. His quote about Hollywood streets true to life. The other guitarist in the band describes the development of the music as his self-titled autobiography. And as the band was trying to write new material, the lead singer remembered a riff that the guitarist had played while he was living in the basement of his mother's home and he played it and the band quickly lays down the foundations of the song and as the guitarist continues coming up with the new guitar parts, quote it was really the first thing we all collaborated on. He said the whole discovering ourselves period from 85 to 86, when we were living together very haphazardly, getting together jamming. There was something going on that not a lot of people had and this song just had this natural feel. It was very cool. The breakdown was based on a song called the Fake that one of the members of the band wrote in 78 for his punk band, the Veins. V-a-i-n-s by the way, this gentleman is the bassist of this band Said it was the first song he ever wrote and that it was later released as a single in that particular band.
Speaker 1:So this is we are talking about Axl Rose on lead vocals, slash on lead guitar, izzy Stradlin on rhythm and backing vocals, duff McKagan on bass. Steven Adler is on the drums. Let's drop it on the turntable. This is Welcome to the Jungle. Guns N' Roses, pat's Peeps 230. From the album 1987, Appetite for Destruction.
Speaker 1:Welcome to the jungle. We got fun and games. We got everything you want, honey. We know the names. We are the people that can find whatever you may need. If you got the money, honey, we got your disease.
Speaker 1:Welcome to the jungle. Welcome to the jungle. Won't you bring it to the jungle? Na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na. I wanna watch you bleed. Welcome to the jungle. We take it day by day If you want it. You're gonna bleed, but it's the price you pay and you're a very sexy girl. It's very hard to please. You can taste the bright lights, but you won't get them for free In the jungle. Welcome to the jungle. Feel my, my, my, my serenity, but you won't get there for free in the jungle. Welcome to the jungle. Feel my, my, my, my serpent's chain, I, I wanna hear you scream. Welcome to the jungle. It gets worse here every day. Learn to live like an animal In the jungle where we play. You gotta hunger for what you see. You'll take it eventually. You can have anything you want, but you better not take it from me In the jungle. Welcome to the jungle, won't you bring it to your? By the way, this song was ranked number 19 on Martin Popoff's book, the top 500 heavy metal Songs of All Time. It was also named the second greatest metal song by VH1 in 2008.
Speaker 1:Geffen Records was having a hard time selling the video to MTV. I don't own the rights to this, just exposing and critiquing. Giving the background, Geffen makes a deal with the network MTV and the video is aired only one time, around 5 am on a Sunday morning. As soon as the video was aired, the network's receiving numerous calls from people wanting to see the video again. In spite of the early morning airtime, the song's music video caught viewers' attention, quickly became MTV's most requested video. The video in question, directed by Nigel Dick, begins with a shot of Axl Rose disembarking on a bus in LA at a drug dealer portrayed by Izzy, seen trying to sell his merch while Rose rejected. Thank you for listening to Pat's Peeps 230. Happy spring. I love you, son. Happy birthday, see you on the radio. My 17 Diablo. Welcome to the Diablo. Welcome to your. This is Down in the Diablo.
