Pat's Peeps Podcast
Ep. 245 Today's Peep Happy Friday Vibes, A Springtime Chat, NFL Draft Blunders, Soul Train, Old Spice, The Clapper and a New Version of an Old Classic in Today's Rare Record Spin
Pat reflects on the joys of spring yard work and the simple pleasures of life while sharing nostalgic memories and listener contributions on a beautiful Northern California day.
• Spring has arrived, bringing with it the sounds of mowers and the challenge of tackling weeds that grew rapidly during Pat's trip to Italy
• Voice assistants may be convenient but feel intrusive at times, unlike the simpler "Clap On, Clap Off" technology of earlier days
• The NFL draft approaches, prompting memories of historic draft blunders, particularly the Jets passing on Dan Marino
• Listener contributions include vintage radio commercials for Old Spice, The Clapper, and fireworks
• Discussion of Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes' "The Love I Lost" leads to Soul Train memories and dance lines
• Pat shares a rare promotional copy of "Come Go With Me" from his record collection, exploring the differences between versions
Wishing everyone a happy Easter weekend. He has risen.
welcome. Welcome to the pats peeps podcast, which is pretty much my daily podcast. I try my best anyhow to do it daily. Doesn't always work out that way, but here we are once again with the 245th. It feels like a milestone. It's not, but it seems like it for some reason. 245th episode of the Pat's Peeps podcast. Can you call it an episode? I guess it's an episode.
Speaker 1:Thank you to Sean Moody for our theme song. By the way, sean Moody has a new song out that he just shared with me today. The gentleman who does our opening theme there, as I've told you many times, just does a fantastic job with the opening theme and he's a great musician. So I'm going to check that out. Maybe we'll be able to present that to you in future episodes, maybe on Monday. I just want to double check with him, but today, as I take a look out my studio windows into the beautiful foothills of Northern California, it is a beautiful sunny day, a little breeze out there, and it's the kind of day where I was inspired to get out there and start some yard work, and so I did just that. What about you, anyone out there starting the yard work as soon as the sun comes out.
Speaker 1:I love the sound of the mowers, like the neighbors, I could hear them mowing and weed eating and all that. I know a lot of people deal with the allergies. I hate weed eating, though that's one thing I delegate. I just can't. I can't stand weed eating. And when I was in Italy for what? 10 days, 11 days I come back. I mean this stuff went from. Okay, I can see some weeds popping up here and there, boom it. Just you come back. It's just like this. It's just unbelievable how fast they grow Grows like a weed. So anyhow, you have to deal with that. But it's just a gorgeous day and it's expected to be nice for a few days, like into the 70s, 80s. So I'm very excited about that.
Speaker 1:Got outside and started pulling weeds. I need to delegate. You know I'm to the point. I'm not lazy or nothing, but I just have. You know, the business, the Pats Peeps business, is starting to pick up and I need to have a little more free time, so I may have to start delegating some of this stuff Once I get all the hard part done. I need someone to maintain it, but I'm not, you know. But I do enjoy going out there and doing that kind of stuff anyhow Well, but I do enjoy going out there and doing that kind of stuff Anyhow well. You must be getting old when you talk about you enjoy doing yard work. I don't know, it's a little different, I don't really. Whatever, I'm not going to dwell on that.
Speaker 1:I did have fun yesterday, by the way, going out to William Land Park for yesterday's Pat's Peeps 244. It was really really nice to get out there and I don't know, there's just something, as I mentioned yesterday, very peaceful about visiting that beautiful park and so I got a lot of response on that too, a lot of people with great memories of going out there and memories very similar to mine. So again, thank you for listening to the podcast. It was, you know, anything I can do to relax like that. I just find it a place where I can relax. You know, I always tell you you can find my podcast. By the way, I am Pat Walsh. I'm the host of the Pat Walsh Radio Show as well, or we just call it the Pat Walsh Show. It's on radio, as we're coming up on our 12th year of doing my radio show on the biggest station in Sacramento, kfbk 93.1 FM, 1530 AM. You can hear us everywhere on your free iHeart app.
Speaker 1:I'm going try. I tried this before. I tried it before. I'll try to hear it again, cause if you had that, alexa, oops, you know, I said it, you know you say the word, you say your name. I never had one of those until recently.
Speaker 1:It's kind of weird. It's kind of you know, it's recently. It's kind of weird. It's convenient, but it's kind of weird. You might talk about something. No, I'm whispering over here. What are you whispering? Anyhow, you say its name and suddenly it gives you information, again, convenient, but kind of weird. I feel like it's eavesdropping. But I tried this before and it promoted someone else's podcast. Let me see if I can do it, because I always say just say it to her and to play my podcast, it should pop up. I did try this, I'll be honest with you, before I came on today and it did work On the second take. So I'll say it very clearly. So if you would like to listen to my Pat's Peeps podcast on that device, you would say here we go. You'd say, alexa, play Pat's Peeps podcast, let's see what happens. Play Pat's Peeps podcast on what happens. Hey.
Speaker 4:Hey, hey.
Speaker 1:Oh, that's when I went to the laundromat and I had no tooth, no front tooth. See, there you go, alexa, stop, thank you. So it works, it worked. It picked out a random episode 186. I remember that day very well, the laundromat episode. It picked out a random episode 186. I remember that day very well, the laundromat episode. That was the first of the two laundromat episodes we've now done One from Colfax. Isn't that exciting.
Speaker 1:I ask you, my friends, seriously, do I hold the niche for laundromat podcasts? What is the record number for laundromat podcasts? I'm going to go with with two. Maybe I'm wrong, you know, maybe that's not a bad idea. Actually, maybe someone has a table set up somewhere at a laundromat where they just podcast every day with the sound of the machines going. I don't know, but we did one there and then one in Florence at the. What was it called the laundry? Uh well, what the heck was? It was in Florence, whatever. It was fun. So, yeah, you can just say it into that device, which I'm not going to say it again right now because, uh, heck, it'll go off on a whole tangent again. By the way, let's see, we have some listener stuff to get to, some listener content. I always like doing that Fun thing on a Friday. This portion of the Pat's Peeps podcast 244 is brought to you by the fireworks outlet.

Speaker 6:Great cars no credit check. It's as easy as pie Great cars no credit check.
Speaker 8:It's as easy as pie.
Speaker 1:Yeah, thank you, credit Mac Daddy. By the way, after listening to that, maybe, just maybe, you get in the mood, if you're anything like me, for a pizza right Making the pizza.
Speaker 5:Making the pizza. Sprinkle the cheese, sprinkle the cheese, sprinkle the cheese. Hey, if you're looking for the best pizza, wings, subs and salads, you need to give us a try. Eat in takeout or deliver to your door. There are a huge line of specialty pizzas a second and none, and with three different restaurants to choose from. That's right. Speaker 1:Yeah, the NFL draft is coming up next week. Might want to grab some pizza for that NFL draft. Anyone follow the NFL draft? Do you have to be a hardcore football guy to or not guy, necessarily person, because I know there's a lot of women that do as well. But do you follow the NFL? Do you have to be hardcore? What level of fan do you have to be to follow the draft? And there's always a lot of hype around the draft For some reason. In the NFL there's some in baseball as well and hockey and things, but for some reason the NFL draft seems to be the the the thing. If you're, if you're watching drafts, you know, because of Mel Kiper he gets a lot of credit and he still has that helmet here. I see it's receding, but Mel Kiper still has that helmet here, but he kind of he gets the credit for starting the hype around the NFL draft. He gets the credit for starting the hype around the NFL draft, I would say anyhow. And so that's coming up. When is it? Is that next Thursday? I believe yes, it'll be April 24th. Is that next Thursday? I think it's 24th, and that'll be at 5 pm Pacific time, 8 pm Eastern time. They're going to be in Green Bay. Round one is April 24th, then the second and third round April 25th, beginning at 4pm our time I say our time Pacific, 7pm Eastern. Then the fourth through seventh round goes on the 26th.
Speaker 1:If you are in California thinking about any California teams, you know I almost bid on that. I almost said the Raiders, isn't that strange? You can't say the Raiders are in California. I automatically went to the Raiders. Of course, the Niners, you know the Santa Clara Niners. Sorry, niner fans, but that's where they are Anyhow. The 49ers, the San Francisco 49ers, they're there at pick 11.
Speaker 1:I almost want to gloss over the Raiders. They moved out. Why should we care? I mean, I know there's a lot of Raider fans though still here. I feel bad for the Raider fans. They are the now Las Vegas Raiders picking at six. They should still be in Oakland. The A's should still be in. Well, that's a whole thing. They're in Sacramento, which I like. That, hey, you know what team is in. There's a couple of other teams in Los Angeles. One of them happens to be my team. They are picking at number 26 this year.
Speaker 1:Of course, as you know, the teams at the very end of the draft are the teams that finished best during the season. The teams at the beginning of the draft are the teams that had the worst records, unless there were trades or some other circumstances surrounding this. And then the Chargers. Let's see where then the chargers. Let's see where the chargers where. Let's see. They were sort of, uh, the middle of the pack. 22 is where the la formerly san diego chargers are picking it. You know, I remember when the minnesota vikings anyone remember when they missed they took too long and missed their pick I mean I couldn't believe that. Ah, we're going to pass. Well, okay, we can't make up our mind. No Time ran out. Come on Minnesota. And the Jets man, the Jets, the Jets. No matter who they draft the fans, but they've had some blunders over the years.
Speaker 6:Johnny Lamb Jones.
Speaker 5:I think it's a good selection, but a very surprising one UCLA running back Freeman McNeil.
Speaker 1:As a season ticket holder of the Jets, I'm going to boo.
Speaker 7:Jets take the first round selection Quarterback Ken O'Brien of.
Speaker 1:California Davis, right out of Davis Wow.
Speaker 3:He said if Marino was going to be around at that time, they'd take Marino. Obviously the Jets know something that you know. The people up here don't I mean think about that.
Speaker 1:Think about that pick right there. Everybody said if Marino was going to be around.
Speaker 5:Let's hear that again.
Speaker 3:Quarterback.
Speaker 1:Ken O'Brien. Ken O'Brien, okay, ken O'Brien was a great quarterback at Davis. Ken O'Brien to the Jets, california Davis UC.
Speaker 3:Davis, everybody said if Marino was going to be around at that time, they'd take Marino.
Speaker 1:And they pass on Dan Marino. Now, did Dan Marino ever win the Super Bowl? No, went to a Super Bowl, didn't win. But if you were around, so what was that like? 1983, I believe. I mean, come on, that dude was one. Marino is one of the great quarterbacks of all time.
Speaker 3:Obviously the Jets know something that you know. The people up here don't. No, they don't. New York Jets first round selection Fullback.
Speaker 6:Roger Vick, texas, a&l.
Speaker 7:New York Jets first round choice Jeff Lagerman, linebacker Virginia.
Speaker 1:Just auto, it's just automatic Boom.
Speaker 4:It's obvious to me right now that the Jets just don't understand what the draft's all about.
Speaker 1:Mel Kuyper. The New York Jets select Blair Thomas running back Penn.
Speaker 6:State. The New York Jets select Johnny Mitchell. Tight end Nebraska. It just cracked me up.
Speaker 5:So New York, new York becomes tight end, tight end.
Speaker 2:We want Seth baby, we want Seth. We want Seth.
Speaker 6:The New York Jets select tight end from Penn State, kyle, brady. Ladies and gentlemen, our first real upset, I I think at this point in the draft I also remember when mel kuiper was telling uh, oh god, who was it the?
Speaker 1:uh, the, who was the colts gm or whatever back then? And he and there was a whole dispute like 1994. Was it Jim Irsay? No, bill Tobin, bill Tobin and Mel Kuyper If you remember that feud that really hyped the draft.
Speaker 4:There's no question about that. But you got a problem with this move. I think it's a typical Colt move. I mean, here's a team that needed a franchise quarterback.
Speaker 1:So this is Kuyper with his helmet hair. I'll start it over for you.
Speaker 4:There's no question about that. But you got a problem with this move. I think it's a typical Colt move. I mean, here's a team that needed a franchise quarterback. There were two out there. They have a chance at two. They don't take them. They end up coming back into the picture to get Trent Dilfer. They take an outside linebacker Not even a true outside linebacker. Somebody has to learn coverage. In Trev Alberts they have Corriott, they have Haraj.
Speaker 1:Yeah, Trev Alberts.
Speaker 4:The hole that developed with the release of Dwayne Bickett up a Trent Dilfer, when all you have is Jim Harbaugh. Give me a break. That's why the Colts are picking second every year in the draft, not battling for the Super Bowl like other clubs in the national football league. All I want to know is Mel Kiper.
Speaker 1:My neighbor has more credentials than Mel Kiper.
Speaker 7:And my neighbor's a postman. What do you want to cover first, our players or that jerk?
Speaker 6:in Baltimore.
Speaker 7:Well, let me tell you a little bit. I mean the people in this room. Mel Kiper.
Speaker 6:I kind of went to one channel.
Speaker 4:And I found all this out about the last year.
Speaker 1:Anyhow, that was a good rivalry right there. Anyhow, by the way, ralph listener content sends this along this portion of the Pat Wall Show. You know I talked about Alexis.
Speaker 2:What was Alexa?
Speaker 1:earlier. I don't want to say it too loud because it'll fire up again. I'm so glad we didn't have Alexis. We had to clap to turn our lights on back then.
Speaker 6:Clap off, Clap, then Clap off, clap on. Clap off the clapper.
Speaker 7:Let you turn things on or off from anywhere in the room. Turn it on. Just plug in the clapper and the television, lamp, stereo, almost anything you want to clap on and off.
Speaker 6:Clap on, clap off, clap on, clap off the clapper. Clap on, clap off. Clap on, clap off the clapper.
Speaker 1:Clap on. Thank you, ralph, for the clapper. Thank you very much. Let's see. What else do we have today in terms of oh, here's something, the lovely, wonderful, cecilia, cecilia, sending this along. This is uh. Oh, this is kind of fun. Where do we go?

Speaker 3:Yo fellas.

Speaker 3:Every time I see them, they start taking a shit. You talking to me Now. I don't like zebras. Every time I see them, they start taking a shit. You see what I'm saying. You see what I'm saying.
Speaker 5:You see what I'm saying hey, eric, eric, you want to see the zebra.
Speaker 6:Oh, oh, oh. Eric, you want to see the zebra? No, I don't want to see, no fucking zebra. I want to take a piss, but I can't even hold my dick. They took my fucking thumb, charlie.
Speaker 1:There you go. There's the lander. He goes on and on. I don't know if I'm an Andrew Dice Clay guy. Thank you for that. Speaker 6:I don't know why they call it Labor.
Speaker 1:Day. Yes, it's Gary Busey on Labor Day Barbecue Not a lot of labor going on really.
Speaker 6:Everybody takes a day off, maybe do some barbecue.
Speaker 1:Then they come to Century 3 Kia and buy new cars. Yeah, that's what I do on Labor Day. I go to Century 3 Kia on Labor Day to see gary bucey barbecue and I buy a new car. He's right, well, that works for us.
Speaker 1:Uh-huh, maybe that's why they call it labor day, because it works buy a brand new kia 4k coupe for just 125 bi-monthly with zero down hurry to century 3, kia, and tell them gary sent you, get your s**t To start the fun. Turn the key Century 3. Meanwhile, dolores. Dolores always exchanges music lyrics with me, which I love. We do that back and forth just in a goofing manner. We just bring back songs from the past. Dolores in a good mood on a Friday. The love I lost.
Speaker 3:Was a sweet love. The love I lost Was complete love.
Speaker 2:The love, love lost. I will never, no, no, never love again.
Speaker 5:I can remember planning, building my whole world around you, and I can remember hoping that you and I could make it on through um what was the next line? Um, oh god, I forgot it. Ah, anyways, there's your disco song, because I know that you hate fucking disco, but I'm here to tell you there's some nutritional value in that shit. Well, some of it is, and I told Dolores.
Speaker 1:I said, you know, I don't know, I love that song. I don't you know, but I don't know that I didn't really consider it disco-y. Really. Maybe it is now. I gotta the love. I love. Harold Melvin of the Blue Notes. Pat's Peeps 245. Happy Friday. So it's Harold Melvin of the Blue Notes. I remember this song so well. Oh, this is like the long version of it. I see. You know what we should do. We should listen to Don Cornelius on Soul Train introduce how about?
Speaker 6:it gang for Harold Melvin and the Mighty Blue Notes. What up boys?
Speaker 1:It does have a bit of a disco beat, more than I remember, like the early disco sound. Yeah, um, you know, yeah, that's that disco beat for sure, for sure it sounded more, I think. Initially to me it sounded more like maybe Soul or Motown, not Motown, but it does have that disco back beat.
Speaker 2:I can remember planning, building my whole world around you. I can remember hoping that you and I could make it all through.
Speaker 1:But something went wrong. I used to love watching Soul Train and American Bandstand. I remember watching that on the weekends back to back. Remember they do that dance line. They'd have to dance. I always liked those guys. I can't remember who they were, those guys. There was like four or five of them and they wore the white gloves and they'd do the robot Dang it. I give it away, my age Unbelievable. Those were good days, good days. Speaking of good days, I pulled this 45 off my super rare record collection shelf up there. I see that it's got a stamp from the radio station. There's two of them in this sleeve.
Speaker 1:This is on Scepter Records, january 9th 1973. I know I didn't talk about anything important on today's podcast. I don't know if I ever talk about anything important on my podcast. I didn't want to talk about anything important on my podcast today. I hope you don't mind. It's such a nice day. I've been in a relaxed mood since Italy. I don't want to get, you know, keyed up over politics or anything like that. So this is, yeah, scepter Records.
Speaker 1:Two of these records in here. Let me pull these apart here. One side is well, well, it says new version, okay, beautiful condition, mono. One side, stereo on the other and then on the other record, and no stickers on this one, but it does have the stamp january 9th 1973. And then the other record, same one, uh, come well. Uh, same song. Uh, it's a mono on this side. And then this side is stereo, not for sale, promotional copy. So I'll put these back in the sleeves for a moment as I tell you about it.
Speaker 1:This goes back to let's see, written by CE Quick. It's an original member, bass vocalist of the American doo-wop vocal group, this Group. This was originally recorded by the group, by the lead singer, norman Wright, in 56, but it was not released until 1957. On the Lunaverse LP come well, let's see, I'm not going to give it away. The final version was released in the second week of January of 57. It was led by Norman Wright, although some sources claim that it was led by Gus Backus. Joe Averbach, the owner of Phoebe Records, could not handle the demand, so he signs with Dot Records in late February of 57.
Speaker 1:Song became a hit, went to number five on the US Billboard Top 100 on the pop chart. Yeah, number five, predecessor of the 1958 established Billboard Hot 100. So okay, so it's a little bit different. I was wondering about that. I also went to number two on the R&B chart. This song and another eight songs were then recorded in the basement of Pittsburgh disc jockey Barry Kay's home. The recordings were released in 1992 as 1956 audition tapes, and I just think that's really interesting. You know the song was later featured in several films, such as American Graffiti, diner, stand by Me, so some really good movies that this thing has been in.
Speaker 1:The Beach Boys did a version, let's see. So I'll just put it on the turntable here. This is let's see. Let's see here. I'm not getting my turntable to go here. Bear with me, bear with me. This is the first time I've been able to get it done. All right, let me see if I hit the right button here. All right, here we go. Sorry, I don't know what happened. Oh, it was unplugged. I see what happened. All right, oh, we plugged something in. Okay, there we go. Dum-de-do-de-dum, dum-dum-dum-dum, dum-de-do-de-dum, dum-dum-dum-dum.
Speaker 2:Baby, come, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. Well, love, love you, darling, Come and go with me. Come with me, baby on the sea. I need you, darling, so come, go with me. Come, come, come, come into my heart. Oh, darling, we would never part. I need you, darling, so come go with me. Yes, I need you. Yes, I do need you. Please, I say never leave me.
Speaker 1:You know this is interesting. It was throwing me for a loop, I have to admit, as I'm looking at the record itself. It's interesting. So I'm looking at the records and I'm thinking what am I missing here? So, as I was flipping the records over, I noticed so there's stereo, there's mono and then there's the same song, but new version. So that's the deal, because the original was on Phoebe and that was confusing me. So on Scepter, on this side. So this side is the new version. Okay, that's really interesting to me. So let's take a listen to the new version. Wow, you've got to be kidding me.
Speaker 1:Okay, that is just.
Speaker 2:Wow, is that different.
Speaker 1:You know the days were 57, 58 and that, and this record's distinctly on this side since 73. That was confusing. Now I got it. So the new version I need you darling, come and go with me.
Speaker 2:Wow, wow, wow, wow, yes, I need you, yes, I really need you. Please say you never leave me. Well, well, well, say you never, yes, you really never. You never give me up.
Speaker 1:Yeah, I really regret that I threw Andrew Dice Clay into the mix today. That guy's as disgusting as I always thought he was. Initially he was kind of funny maybe, but then whatever. Sorry, if you like, andrew Dice Clay, just eh. Thank you for listening. Happy Friday and, by the way, it's Easter weekend. Happy Easter weekend to you and yours. He has risen. See you on the radio.
Speaker 2:You never give me up.
