Ep. 246 Drives Through Easter Memories, Faith, Family, the Passing of Pope Francis, Cigar-Free Lent, Sick of Mock NFL Drafts, Remembering a Pink Floyd Concert from 37 Years Ago, and a New Tune from My Friend Jonny Quality
Easter Sunday holds special memories for many, and Pat Walsh takes us on a journey through his own deeply personal connection with this holy day. From childhood recollections of sunshine streaming through stained glass windows to the comfortable ritual of attending Mass as an adult, Pat reflects on how these traditions keep him connected to his parents and faith. As he describes driving with the top down under Northern California's perfect spring sky, we're reminded how sensory experiences anchor our most precious memories.
The episode takes an unexpectedly timely turn with discussion of Pope Francis, who passed away just one day after making his final public appearance blessing 35,000 people at St. Peter's Square on Easter. This poignant "Easter miracle" resonates deeply with Pat, who recently visited the Vatican during his trip to the Italian Riviera. His firsthand description of standing in St. Peter's Square, visiting the Sistine Chapel, and experiencing these sacred spaces creates a powerful connection between current events and personal experience.
Pat shares a delightful trip down memory lane, recalling Easter 1972 with remarkable detail - from white Adidas with black stripes to chain bracelets and those unmistakably wide watch bands of the era. He also celebrates completing his Lenten sacrifice of giving up cigars, reminisces about a Pink Floyd concert from exactly 37 years ago where the rain miraculously stopped and the sky turned pink before the show, and introduces listeners to new music from Johnny Quality. Through these interwoven stories, Pat creates a warm, inviting space where nostalgia, faith, and the simple joys of everyday life come together in perfect harmony.
Hello there, welcome to the Pats Peeps podcast, to the Pats Peeps podcast. What are we at? What do we have? 246. Just keep moving on. It's a Monday. It's a beautiful day. As I look out my windows into the foothills of Northern California, you couldn't ask for a more pleasant day. Sun is shining, a very light breeze. Yesterday was Easter and I hope you had a wonderful Easter. It's the 21st day of April 2025. I can't believe we're at 246 already on the podcast episodes, but again, I hope it was a lovely Easter day yesterday. We're so blessed to have this weather here in California and I took advantage of that, took a nice drive with the top down and the car there and tell you more about that. But whatever you happen to do, hope it was very nice, whether it's getting a chance to an opportunity to just kind of spend time with your family, or have dinner together with your family or friends, or looking for your Easter basket, whatever it might be. I started the day off right. I'm so glad I woke up yesterday in a great mood as the sun was shining.
Speaker 1:I always love Easter Sunday. It's one of my favorite mornings of the year, particularly in being Catholic, going to Mass. Oh yeah, and it's the end of Lent, by the way, and I did very well all right during Lent, I have to say I have to give you an update on that too. We'll jot that down. But I just love Easter Sunday. It's my favorite day of the year to go to mass. If you're Catholic, you know some people like midnight mass when it comes to Christmas or they like Christmas mass, which I do as well, but I always loved Easter Sunday because the sun's always shiny.
Speaker 1:I don't know, I look through the stained glass windows ever since I was a kid. I just love doing that. You know, when you're a kid at least in my world, growing up Catholic, and whatever you did, whatever you celebrate, whether you're religious, not religious, not trying to get religious on you this is part of life, you know. And growing up Catholic, we'd go to Mass. And I can remember all of these feelings going through my mind yes, we're praising, praise Jesus, they're reading the scripture, we're praying together, honoring God, we're gathering together. But I also remember I had a Schwinn bicycle, you know, and it'd be a sunny morning, like Saturday mornings. You get up, watch cartoons Saturday morning cartoons. This is what we used to do. If you're of a certain age. You get up, watch Saturday morning cartoons, play baseball, whatever, sunday morning, go to church, and I could tell whether the sun was shining as I looked through those stained glass windows. And I love the beauty of the stained glass windows, the colors and what each window would represent, and you know the plaques on the wall, everything would be in order, the way they're supposed to be, and I would just look and follow along all of the as Jesus is carrying the crucifix and being beaten, wearing the crown of thorns, anyhow. So it's just very special.
Speaker 1:Gosh, I can go back in time. I can remember listen, I've been around a while. I remember 1972 easter, actually, hmm, hmm, yeah, april of 72, going to Apple Valley where my grandmother lived, grandma Walsh, who at that time had just gotten married to a guy by the last name, alan, but she was always Grandma Walsh, mary Walsh, visiting her, and we had a new stepmother, bonnie, visiting her, and we had a new stepmother, bonnie, and it was really the first time that we had spent time with our new stepmother. And believe me when I tell you, my mom was not very happy about it. That's a whole other story. My mother was not very happy about that She'd been married to my dad, had six kids together. You know, you know so anyhow, but I remember that going to Victorville. We remember the Saturday before the Easter Sunday going to Vic, driving to Victorville and shopping with our stepmother first time we really did anything with her and it was Easter shopping in Victorville, california.
Speaker 1:I wanted these certain tennis shoes, these white tennis shoes with the black stripes. Remember those Adidas? I wanted those so bad. Now, I was always into fashion. I've always been, at least in my mind. I'm trying to be fashion. You know, I always had some kind of fashion, so I wanted those. I wanted the jeans at that time.
Speaker 1:I wanted the white t-shirt, cotton t-shirt, and a chain wristband, a chain bracelet, not a wristband but a bracelet. And I look back at this photo. Oh, we also had those fat watches. Remember those watches that were the wristband back in the day, back in the early 70s? Yes, I've been around a while. The wristband I keep seeing wristbands, the watch bands. They were the extra wide, like two inches wide, inch and a half wide. And I'm looking at a picture playing catch with my brother Jim, out in the front yard of my grandmother's house during that Easter weekend. And there I got all of that because, you know, thanks to Bonnie, my stepmother, she did get the white tennis shoes. I already had the chain bracelet, my glove and all that. The white t-shirt Thought I looked cool, which, by the way, I look pretty dapper. Thank you very much.
Speaker 1:But there's just memories, and it's just so beautiful. There's these little back roads where I go to church. I could take the instead of jumping on a freeway. I'm always the side road guy, I'm not the freeway guy. I like to take the back roads if I have enough time and there's this little back road area where I take it from my home to church and then I can take it back and put the top down on a beautiful day like yesterday, and to listen to. Yesterday I was actually listening to 40s music and then I mix in a little early, not the ones you hear all the time, but a little early Sinatra, like the old Sinatra that never gets played, some of the old Dean Martin or Tony Bennett stuff not, I left my heart in San Francisco. I never liked that one. Sorry, sorry, but I'm talking about the old stuff when they were very young and you just don't hear those songs. Anyhow, I was doing that and it was just a gorgeous morning to drive like that and go to Mass. It made me feel really, really good. So, whatever you did on your beautiful sunday easter sunday I hope it was wonderful.
Speaker 1:I still have this relaxed feeling coming back from italy. To be honest with you those of you listen, by the way, my name is pat walsh, in case you didn't know that. I'm the host of the pat walsh show, kfbk radio in sacramento, 93.1 FM, 1530 AM. I just came back from that two-week trip 10-day trip to be more precise to the Italian Riviera, and I talked at length on my podcast. I know about Stressa, the least stressed place I've ever been, and I'm still feeling that relaxation, you know, which is very, very nice. It keeps my blood pressure down.
Speaker 1:You know the other thing about going to Mass because I was raised going to Catholic Mass, being in a big old Irish Catholic family, it always makes me feel close to my parents. When I'm in there praying, for instance after communion, I just feel like, wow, as I'm praying, I feel like they're, they know I'm there, they know that I'm still doing the right thing in their book. You know what I mean. Like this is the way they raised me the right thing in their book. You know what I mean. Like, this is the way they raised me. That's who I am. I just feel their presence. So that's another thing that I really, really love.
Speaker 1:And then you always get the kids in there. The families Got a kid staring at you. You're in the pew. You know Little kids looking at you. I like to make a little face at the kids, see if I can get their attention and a little baby will be. You know mom or the dad's holding the baby and a lot of times up to their chest. So the baby's looking at you and once they stare you down, you get the little staring contest. I like to make a little face, see if I can make them laugh. I'm trying to be very discreet about it so people don't see, and I love it when I get the little one laughing, which I did yesterday. God made me feel so good Because I always loved parents. When you know people in church that were older people that would do that to me as a kid Plus being the older brother, I had plenty of ways to try to make my brothers' and sisters' laughter in mass, which is not right, I know, but you're just being a little kid, but we were always very respectful, very, very respectful.
Speaker 1:Speaking of that, I do want to mention that today the Pope passed away. Pope Francis, the 266th head of the Catholic Church, dies a day after Easter, almost a month since he was released from the hospital, but yesterday, well, first of all, the Vatican made the announcement. Yesterday, the Vatican confirmed. Cardinal Kevin Farrell said that the Vatican uh, announced the Pope Francis returned to the home of the father. And you know, here he is. What it's. It's a miracle, as the today, as I mentioned, just came back from Italy today, and midday today, the church bells across Italy began to to ring upon the news of the passing of the Pope, pope Francis. And this is an incredibly. This is an incredible thing. This is not even 24 hours that had passed since the Pope had made a surprise appearance on the balcony overlooking St Peter's Square where he blessed 35,000 people gathered to celebrate Easter at the Vatican.
Speaker 1:The Pope was breathing on his own, without oxygen tubes this day, despite being told by his doctors to spend two months convalescing after 38 days in the hospital with double pneumonia. Matter of fact, last couple of weeks he was still taking visitors. Really against doctors I won't say orders, but best advice meeting up with all kinds of people, various walks of life. And then he appears on Easter Sunday and in front of, like I said, 35,000 people at St Peter's Square and he said dear brothers and sisters, I wish you a happy Easter. Took a lot of effort apparently for him to say that.
Speaker 1:According to some reports, I think people could feel something as if they could tell that it was the last time they'd see him. One resident of Rome said who was in St Peter's Square for the Easter Mass returned to pay his respects. That's according to reports from the BBC. He added you know, know, usually everyone shouts long live the pope. This time it was much quieter than usual as, uh, there was maybe more respect for his suffering, but there he is blessing the crowd. The doctors had prescribed him this whole regimen of you know, particularly rest. But Pope Francis was very active, typically active, said he wanted to be back at the Vatican and he wanted to be there in time for Easter. Thus an incredible Easter miracle. So he made it.
Speaker 1:Some would say that for Christians, easter is even more important than Christmas, as it symbolizes a core tenet of their faith the resurrection of Christ three days after his nailing to the cross. When you think about that, how brutal that was. But here's the Pope, back in March, you know, before he was discharged back, I think March or mid-March, something like that, I can't remember the date. He's waving to the crowds from the hospital. His medical team said all he really needed was oxygen. Again, he was convalescing. Convalescing at home would be better for him than being in the hospital with his infections and such. And so Easter was still three weeks away. He became busy. All of a sudden this man meets with King Charles and Queen Camilla and appears on the Vatican balcony Palm Sunday. Four days later, april 13th, he met with a crowd of 20,000 plus people, again in St Peter's Square, and this was against the advice of his doctors. So he God bless the Pope.
Speaker 1:Not everyone agreed with some new policies he had. I should say policies, thoughts, beliefs. But listen, do we ever agree with every single thing? In previous years he'd washed inmates' feet, excuse me, mirroring what Jesus is said to have done with his disciples the night before his death.
Speaker 1:I feel very blessed that I was able to visit the Vatican, that I was able to visit St Peter's Square. I remember it was pouring rain, pouring rain and it was getting ready to deluge. As we're standing under this tarp, getting ready to essentially run across St Peter's Square up into the St Peter's Basilica, and so we all say, okay, you're ready, let's go. We took off running, it's pouring, and then when you get up to the Basilica, of course, then there's marble floors which are also wet. It was very, very I'm not going to say nerve-wracking, but you had to really watch out. But the fact that I was able to go and see things like the Sistine Chapel, st Peter's Basilica Square, all of these things, it's truly a blessing, I have to say. And going there with a bunch of great people, the Pats Peeps group that we go with with conservative tours, being able to go to the Vatican museums truly a blessing. I never knew I would be able to have that opportunity, but yet here we were.
Speaker 1:Remember, let's see, if you go to patspeepscom and look at our businesses, you'll see my brother Tim's business up there. If you're going to buy a home, if you sign through him as your lender at AI Lending, you'll have an opportunity. We're giving away a trip for two to one of these beautiful places with Pats Peeps and Conservative Tours. Plus, you get your appraisal feedback. So I would highly recommend, if you're going to buy a home, that you should just check out. If you just go to patspeepscom, my brother, tim's up there my youngest brother, he owns the business AI Lending Very reputable. Been around, tim has been doing this forever Get your appraisal feedback and we're going to give a trip or two to one of these beautiful places that we go with conservative tours. So that was wonderful.
Speaker 1:And the other thing about it Lent is over. Anyone do anything for Lent. What did you give up for? Lent has to be something you enjoy.
Speaker 1:As a kid it was rough, you know, because it'd be sweets, even though I've never been a big sweets guy. When you're a kid it's a little different. You're like, hey, I want to, I want to indulge in sweets, because they'd always have some kind of an Easter party at school and I can remember my mom said she always said you know, we should give up sweets For some reason. That was the thing, and it still is, with a lot of folks who give something up for lent. And so I, inevitably, with the Easter party coming up before Easter, obviously, I can remember being on the pay phone or whatever. Mom, just this one time, can I please just have a cupcake or whatever it was? You know I can remember my mom. Well, patrick, that's up to you. And if you really want to look how long you've gone already, do you think Jesus would like? I'm like no, so, but so it worked. You, you were giving up something that you liked.
Speaker 1:This time, because I'm not a sweets guy, I gave up cigars. Now, just so, you know, it's not like I'm an everyday cigar guy. I'm not just sitting around smoking cigars, three, four cigars a day, cigars a day. But yeah, I, I I'm now to, uh, I don't know, probably before I would before the before Lent, I would say maybe maybe two a week.
Speaker 1:If that, and initially, even though it's only two a week, you know, I kind of miss it, because I try to do most everything in moderation except radio and broadcasting. I do a lot of that, but pretty much everything in moderation. So I don't smoke a ton of cigars, but when you give them up and you can't have one, then you miss them Again. That's why I don't have a humidor. I may have mentioned that before. I don't have a humidor, because if I had a humidor it'd be filled with cigars. And if I had a humidor filled with cigars, I'd be smoking them every day. Find a reason, but I'm not. I don't want to do that. I want to try to stay in shape. By the way, still doing the workout stuff, are you still keeping with your New Year's resolutions at April 21st? By the way, yesterday was 420. Oh my gosh, I just thought about that.
Speaker 1:Oh yeah, you just thought about 420,. Pat, are you keeping up with your New Year's resolutions? I'm starting to really get into it now, lifting weights more than I have been. That feels great Push-ups, and all that 420,.
Speaker 1:Yesterday I was telling my brother God, when I start revealing these things, I realize how old I am. I'm now older than every human. I think I'm now older than Keith Richards, even though I feel very young. I have surpassed Keith Richards. But I told my brother Steve. I said, steve, can you imagine this? Can you really imagine that it was? I better count this again. Let's see here.
Speaker 1:Yes, I can't believe that it was 37 years ago. 37 years ago that this was going on. We were at this very, very concert, pink Floyd, at Hughes Stadium in Sacramento, april 20th 1988, on the Momentary Lapse, the recent concert. That's the actual concert 37 years ago. I truly cannot believe that they say time flies. You might not even be 37 years old.
Speaker 1:Listening to this podcast, I remember it rained all. We're right there in that crowd, rained all day. We're like, oh no, we've been waiting for this concert, we've been waiting to see Pink Floyd, and at Hughes Stadium, what an unusual place to be able to see Floyd, or any concert for that matter. Right before the concert started, maybe an hour before the concert started. As the sun started going down, the rain stopped, the sky opened up and the sky was pink. I kid you not, I was there, my brother was there, sandy was there, sus, my brother was there, sandy was there, susie Q, Danny Boy, we're all there. You know this is a great song and they did play. Have a Cigar that day as well. So today, lent is over and I will have a cigar. You miss them initially, but guess what, after a while, you don't miss them as much. I'm not missing them as much, but I'm still going to have one, got to have one. But that was an incredible show. I cannot believe it was 37 years ago yesterday, oh my goodness.
Speaker 1:And the other reason I kind of double-dipped. I'm going to be honest with you. I kind of double dipped in that I'm getting these implants in my teeth on the right side, upper jaw, and you're not really supposed to smoke while you're healing after you have these things drilled in. I thought April 17th. I truly was looking forward to coming back and finally getting these implants put in. However, my mistake. It was actually. It was going to be. That's the day that they look at them and make sure you're healed enough, and if they healed properly, then two weeks later it turns out I will get the implant. So that's I thought I'd be done with that. So now here I am, may 6th, looking at that. So, either way, I did not smoke a cigar, so it worked for my implants and I double dipped there for lint, so I will have a cigar today. I'm a little concerned though, because you know, after not smoking for a while, you smoke you might feel might feel kind of, you know, maybe not feeling so good, so I got to be careful of that.
Speaker 1:I had a beautiful Easter yesterday. Like I said, put the top down. You know, darlene with a Y, you can't ask for a better friend than Darlene with a Y, always looking out for you. I said you know what? I can't just leave her sitting up there. I got nothing else to do do. Why don't I go pick her up, put the top down, throw on that 40s music and that old Sinatra and Dean Martin Bennett, like I was telling you earlier, took her for a ride. It was a fantastic time, nice to get her out. She's a sweet person. Be nice to your friends and let them know that you care. All right, let's see.
Speaker 1:Let's see the drafts finally coming up this Thursday. The NFL draft, finally. I don't know about you, but I'm so sick of the mock drafts. It's mock draft 1.0, 2.0, 3.0. I mean, I don't know how many times you can go over these mock drafts, but I'm guilty of it. I get caught up in it. Then you have to look at Mel Kiper's haircut, for you probably feel the same way about me. Everyone's got a mock draft, you know, and then they never come true. So that's happening on Thursday, I think. Again, the Raiders are at 6, the Niners at 11, if memory serves me correctly.
Speaker 1:What I'd like to do today is play for you a song. Now I always play the opening theme. Is this right? Hold on, I'll try to get right. It's the opening theme for Pat's Peaks.
Speaker 1:I always give credit where credit is due Sean Moody, johnny Quality. Sean is Johnny Quality's band, so he has. I hope he doesn't mind me doing this. I'm honored that he gave this to me first and I want to play this for you. I have to tell you I just love this music. I love what he does. I love the music that they are putting out. It is rock. This sounds like it has a singer from the UK on it, but they're just going, they're getting ready to release this, but he said, pat, I want you to hear it first. So, because you're my audience listening to my peeps, which I'm very grateful for, please go to patspeepscom. Please check out the businesses there, please, and my brother's business right there on the front page.
Speaker 1:We're just trying to save you money, so let's play something from Johnny Quality's new record. This is called I just love it, by the way, I hope I'm saying this right Vogue, gyratory, gyratory, vogue, gyratory, gyratory, vogue, gyratory, something like that by Johnny Quality. This is a song and there's how many tracks on here? They're all really good. There's nine tracks on the new record and I'll let you know if you, if you're interested, you could buy it. But I want to play the song called Back Door by, uh, johnny Quality. Here we go, I'm still waiting for the high.
Speaker 2:Back, back, back, back, back, back, back, back, back, back, back, back, back back back back, back, back, back, back, back, back, back, back, back, back, back, back, back, back, back, back, back, back, back, back, back, back, back, back, back, back, back, back, back, back, back, back, back, back, back, back, back, back, back, back back back back, back you some, give you some, give you some more.

Speaker 2:I'm still touching another skin, but maybe this time I had too much. I'm still counting on the one, two's too many, but three's more fun.
Speaker 4:Give you some, give you some, give you some more. Give you some, give you some, give me some more, give me some, give me some, give me some more. A backdoor, backdoor lover's van.
