Ep. 249 Today's Peep Silence Worth $20,000- "Sleepify" The Strangest Album Ever? The Auctioning of Jimi Hendrix's Woodstock Stratocaster, the Eagles' "Hell Freezes Over" Tour, Elvis Presley's Last Recordings and a Lost Gem from the Seekers
Journey through memorable moments in music history as we celebrate Pat's Peeps episode #249. From Elvis Presley topping the charts in 1960 with "Stuck on You" after his Army stint to Harry Belafonte's lasting legacy, this episode traverses decades of musical milestones that occurred on April 25th.
Discover fascinating stories like The Police making their debut on BBC's Top of the Pops with "Roxanne" in 1979, and U2's "Joshua Tree" beginning its chart-dominating run in 1987 on its way to selling over 25 million copies worldwide. Revisit the unexpected collaboration between Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder that reached #1 in 1982 despite our host's personal reservations about the track.
The episode features one particularly ingenious music industry hack: how a band called Vulfpeck released "Sleepify" in 2014 – an album consisting of ten tracks of complete silence – and encouraged fans to stream it overnight while sleeping. This clever exploit of Spotify's royalty system earned them nearly $20,000 before the streaming service pulled the plug for content policy violations. It's a perfect example of musicians adapting to the digital age with creative problem-solving.
We also touch on poignant moments like the auctioning of Jimi Hendrix's Woodstock Stratocaster for a record sum, the Eagles' "Hell Freezes Over" reunion that defied Glenn Frey's earlier proclamation, and the tragic loss of TLC's Lisa Lopez in 2002. There's even the amusing tale of Mick Jagger outranking the U.S. President for a luxury hotel suite in Vienna.
Whether you're a music history buff or simply enjoy entertaining stories from the world of entertainment, this episode offers something for everyone who appreciates the rich tapestry of musical heritage that continues to influence our culture today. Well, here we are once again for another Pat's Peeps podcast. I wish I wouldn't have skipped a day this week due to studio maintenance, because we would be on the milestone 250th podcast and it would fall on a Friday. However, here we are on the 249th that's Peeps Podcast. Thank you for listening. You know I might do 250 tomorrow. On Saturday I don't usually do the Saturday podcast, but I might do that tomorrow Because I'd like to round out the week with, if that's considered, rounding out the week with the 250th podcast. So maybe I'll get up and watch some Saturday cartoons. Tomorrow We'll talk about cartoons. I don't know, I'm just putting it out there. I love you know. Here I am, as an adult, still loving the Saturday morning cartoons.
Speaker 1:By the way, it's a Friday, it's the 25th of April 2025. And today, as I look out my studio window into the beautiful foothills of California, where'd the sun go? Sunshine go away today. Remember that song, jonathan Edwards, baby 1971. But it's cloudy out there and it's cool. It's almost like wood stove time. But nah, I don't think it's that cold. We are expected to get some snow in the foot not in the foothills but in the Sierras and then maybe some rain and some thunderstorms or whatever over the weekend. So, anyhow, that's what it looks like today. Hope you're having a good day wherever you are listening to my podcast. You know I'm also the host of the Pat Wall Showh Show, radio show KFBK in Sacramento, 93.1 FM, 1530 AM, and what I'm really loving is that we a lot of the callers we get on my show said, yeah, I'm listening to your Pat's Peeps. So that's really very, very positive. So thank you very much for that and please, please, don't forget to check out patspeepscom. If you would do that, we'd be so very grateful and support local business. Uh, let's see what do we have.
Speaker 1:Oh, today being the 25th day of april, of April, I just thought it might be kind of fun, for whatever reason, to do like a. Because you know I always love talking music, I thought maybe it might be kind of fun to do a like a this day in music kind of thing. You know what I mean? Let me see. Hmm, yeah, I might do that this day in music kind of thing. You know what I mean? Let me see, yeah, I might do that. It's a very interesting day in music.
Speaker 1:I'm stretching right now because I just lost my plays. Anyhow, I did. I just completely lost my plays, everything just kind of shut down right there. So, yeah, all right, let me see if I can get back on track. See if I can, because I don't want to. Okay, let's see, here we go Back on track. Back on track on this day. See, the first time I try a new little thing here. It goes awry.
Speaker 1:By the way, also day two of the draft, the NFL draft. If you're following along, the only team last night that did not make a pick was my team, of course, the Rams at 26. But they traded up and I really like the fact that they did that. I think that's a brilliant move, because I believe next year is the year that they're going to probably take a quarterback to eventually replace Matthew Stafford. So, yeah, so, uh, I'll, maybe I'll get more into that, but I've got I'm not trying to turn this into a, a sports show there we I bought myself enough time to get all my stuff back. Uh, let's see. I'll just let you know though, since we're on that topic uh, asked, ashton Gentry, as predicted by many, went to the Raiders at number six at a Boise State.
Speaker 1:Uh and uh, this kid is just a great character guy ability to break tackles. I mean he ranked second in NCAA history behind Barry Sanders for the most yards rushing yards last year, behind Barry Sanders for the most in a single season. That's saying something, right, this guy. He's got a great stiff arm. He has the ability to avoid defenders to try to wrap up his legs for the tackle and he's a patient runner and he is really projected to be a great NFL player. We'll see how that works.
Speaker 1:Number 11, Michael Williams, went to the 49ers. This guy's a pass rusher. They say a very powerful pass rusher. He's out of Georgia, he can get into the blockers, he can push them aside, he's got very active hands. He's got great inside moves, according to the scouts, and so they've finally added someone on the defensive line to pair with Nick Bosa to try to get a pass rush going there.
Speaker 1:And, as I mentioned, my team's the only team that moved out. They made a trade with the Atlanta Falcons and, as far as I'm concerned, fleeced the Falcons as they get a number one pick next year and I instantly thought you know what? Here's what they're going to do. So they'll have their number one pick next year and I instantly thought you know what. Here's what they're going to do. So they'll have their number one pick next year. They'll have the Falcons number one pick next year and, with Stafford expected to play a couple of more years, two or three more years, they're going to get a quarterback in the draft, which next year's uh, pretend, uh prospective quarterbacks are going to be better than this year's, according to those in the know which would also include Arch Manning and, if need be, they can pair those first-rounders up, because the Rams do things like that. And heck, they got a future first-rounder. If they really wanted to get serious, they could throw two first-rounders and a future first-rounder in there. So, anyhow, enough of that, as I was mentioning on this day in music. Enough of that. As I was mentioning on this day in music here on Pat's Peeps 249.
Speaker 1:In 1960, the king Elvis hey man, how you doing, man? Elvis started a four-week run at number one on the US singles chart. Was stuck on you. His first hit single after his two-year stint in the US Army became his first number one single of the 1960s. 13th overall Stick, because I'm stuck on you.
Speaker 1:I may have actually featured that one at one point on my Pat's Peeps podcast. I'm not sure, but I may have. By the way, speaking of Elvis 1977, elvis made the last recordings of his life during a concert at the Saginaw Michigan Civic Center. During a concert at the Saginaw Michigan Civic Center, three songs from the show appeared on the posthumously released Presley album Moody Blue. Is that the Star Wars theme? Is that Star Wars? Hey, star Wars came out in 77. So they bring Elvis out on stage and he makes his last recordings of his life. The lady's just going crazy.
Speaker 3:In 1970, man.
Speaker 1:I remember this one very well 1970, the Jackson 5 started a two-week run at the number one spot on the US singles chart With ABC. It was their second US number one hit, Number eight in the UK.
Speaker 3:I used to practice dancing to this.
Speaker 1:In 1979, this new sounding band very new sounding band makes their debut on BBC TV's Top of the Pops performing the song Roxanne. The single, which was taken from their album Atlantis de Amor, was written from the point of view of a man who falls in love with a prostitute. The police, with that amazing debut album In 1982, I never liked this one. I'm so sorry for saying it but it's true. Two powerhouses combine. How can that go wrong? Well, we know the Lulu album with Metallica and Lou Reed how wrong that went. But these are two all-time powerhouses combining forces and nothing went wrong. That went. But these are two all-time powerhouses combining forces and nothing went wrong. Nothing.
Speaker 1:It went to number one on the UK singles chart. It was one of the artist's 24th number one hit Single, hit single as a songwriter, number one. The other artist right there, at the same level, 1982, number one. Even though I don't care for it, that's a personal thing, but Paul McCartney joining up with Stevie Wonder for this song Ebony and Ivory Learn to give each other what we need to survive Together alive.
Speaker 3:Ebony and ivory Live together in perfect harmony.
Speaker 1:I know a lot of people like it. It went to number one. For goodness sake, patrick, lay off, I love it. Madonna 1987, goes to numero uno on the UK singles chart with La Isa Bonita. The fifth and final single from her third studio album, true Blue, made her the only female artist to score four UK number one singles. Song had been offered to Michael Jackson for his Bad album. By the way, meanwhile, in 1987, and boy do I remember this very well when this came out In 1987, this album, which seemingly was played on the radio every hour, joshua Tree, you too, started a five-week run at number one on the US album chart, their fifth studio album.
Speaker 1:Inspired by American tour experiences, literature and politics, the album topped the charts in over 20 countries. It is one of the world's all-time best-selling albums, with over 25 million copies sold, won a Grammy Award for Album of the Year, produced hit singles With or Without you. I Still Haven't Found what I'm Looking For and when the Streets have no Name. And meanwhile, in 1990, boy I remember that so well. In 1990, the Fender Stratocaster that Jimi Hendrix played at Woodstock Woodstock Festival, woodstock Festival, was auctioned off for a record $295,000. His two-hour set at the 1969 festival became the longest of his career. There's that guitar.
Speaker 1:In 1994, and I was at one of these shows the Eagles played the first of two shows where they recorded their Hell Freezes Over album Don Henley, glenn Frey, joe Walsh, don Felder, timothy B Schmidt. They get back together for the first time Well, actually it was the previous December for the making of a Travis Tritt video, their song Take it Easy. The name of the album was an earlier quote by Glenn Frey, who had responded to the question when will the Eagles get back together? When hell freezes over, he said. And then it goes on to be this huge selling concert and they're still doing it Meanwhile, in 2002, by the way, pats Peeps 249,. Thanks for listening. Happy Friday 2002,.
Speaker 1:Tlc member Lisa Lopez was killed in a car accident in Honduras. She was only 30 years old. Seven other people, including Lopez's brother and sister, who were in this Mitsubishi Montero sports utility vehicle when the crash happened, were taken to a hospital. Lopez, who had been driving the car when it crashed, had spent the past month in Honduras working on various projects, including a clothing line and a new solo project, as well as a book. A lonely mother gazing out of a window Staring at a son that she just can't touch.
Speaker 1:2007. 2007. During the Rolling Stones' current world tour, our aides to George Bush were told that they could not book a luxury five-star hotel suite. Why? Well, because Mick Jagger had already booked that suite. Jagger had splashed out 3,600 euro a night for the suite at a five-star Imperial Hotel in Vienna, austria. This was in advance of the band's appearance there. Prior to the attempted booking, the US Secret Service agents had already vetted the hotel, but to no avail. 2007. The man with the classic Sex and sex and sex and sex and look at me, I'm in a tatter. 2007. The man with the classic Halloween song Bobby Boris Pickett. The American singer Bobby Boris Pickett died of leukemia. He was 69 years old. Scored this Halloween anthem.
Speaker 2:The Monster Mash in 1962. I was working in the lab late one night when my eyes beheld an eerie sight For my monster from his slab began to rise and suddenly, to my surprise, he did the match. He did the monster mash.
Speaker 1:Do you know this song had been banned by the BBC in the UK. It caught on in a flash. It was deemed offensive and was not a hit until 1973. It was a spoof on the dance crazes popular at the time, including the twist and the mashed potato. Speaking of getting the mash, a man suing rapper Snoop Dogg told the court that he received a brutal beatdown from the star's security, richard Monroe Jr, who claimed that the rapper hit him with a microphone after he climbed on stage, and mr monroe asking for 22 million dollars in damages from snoop as well as others. Jurors were told that as the performer started his hit Jit and Juice at the White River Amphitheater in Seattle, monroe thought there was an open invitation to go up on the stage and pate hey.
Speaker 1:Meanwhile in 2016, 2016,. Meanwhile in 2016, 2016,. Motley Crue co-founder Nikki Sixx launched a campaign against Google to pay musicians more money when their videos appeared on YouTube. The bass player was urging Google to remember its former slogan don't be evil in its dealings with artists. Absolutely, he was right. 2017, 2017. Sir Elton John suffered a potentially deadly bacterial infection during a tour, forcing him to spend two nights in intensive care and cancel concerts in the United States. He became violently ill at the end of the tour in South America, requiring him to return to the UK for urgent treatment.
Speaker 3:Nine concerts that were due to be staged in Las Vegas and here in California were canceled. Like a princess perched in her electric chair. And this one more bit.
Speaker 1:And in 2023, and in 2023, 2023,. American singer actor, civil rights activist Harry Belafonte died from congestive heart failure at his home in Upper West Side, manhattan. He scored over 15 US top 40 albums including the 1956 Calypso.
Speaker 1:He was also a close confidant of Martin Luther King Jr during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 60s. And, by the way, I just want to say this about Harry Belafonte he had a lot more great songs than just Banana Boat Song. That guy had some really, really great songs. Really liked Harry Belafonte. So that is a lot of this day in music. There was one other one that I wanted to bring up, and this is Volpec. Now, if you're thinking, what's Volpec, this is very, very interesting. Either that or I'm easily interested in boring things, I don't know, but to me this is interesting. So Volpec is an artist that Spotify actually, on this date in 2014, removed their album by this funk band, wolfpack, from their streaming site. It's Wolfpack, not Volpack Wolfpack.
Speaker 1:The band's fourth record, sleepify, was made up of 10 tracks. Okay, the idea was aimed at generating money so that the band could go on tour and not charge admission fees, so I'm leaving a couple of things out there. Well, here's why. So this was released March of 2014. I can get away with playing this entire album right now without even interrupting it. I'll bet the album was made available, like I say, on the streaming service, spotify, where they encourage customers to play the album on a loop while they slept and then, in turn, the royalties from the album the playing of each track on the album were to be used to crowdfund a free concert tour by the band. But the album was pulled by Spotify April 26th 2014. So I guess it was maybe I'm one day off here. They're saying the 26th, my other source says the 25th either way, but spotify cited violations of the services content policies. Why? Well, it was estimated the band would be able to collect at least 20 000 us dollars in royalty payments from streams of sleepify, the album, although it was unclear if the band would receive the money. In July 2014, billboard reported the band received you know what? I'm just going to play it right now. Well, okay, the band received royalties totaling $19,655 plus and anticipated $1,100 forthcoming, and the band was in the process of organizing a tour is forthcoming and the band was in the process of organizing a tour. Voltpec announced the admission-free sleepify tour, so you'd have to pay anything for this of the united states, scheduled for september 2014.
Speaker 1:Here is the. So the album. Oh boy, excuse me, the album is 10 tracks of silence. Here it is. I'm playing it right now. It's on maximum volume. It's on maximum volume 10 tracks of silence. They encourage fans to stream this on repeat over the night. I mean, can you imagine and because I don't want her to go off right now can you imagine saying to Alexa play Wolfpack Sleepify? Oh God, she heard me Play Wolfpack Sleepify. Oh God, she heard me. It heard me. It's playing it right now and you can't hear anything there either? I'd like to know what this tour would be like. You know what would, although this tour, what this tour would be like, you know what would, although this tour just the silence would be better than some bands that I've seen.
Speaker 1:Wolfpack released Sleepify in March of 2014 as a means to fund a concert tour for the same name. All the shows were going to be free of charge, funded solely by using royalty payments from from this album or from spotify. The service calculates royalties based on how many times the track has been played. Counting a single player is listening to the song for at least 30 seconds and so, as such, all of the tracks on sleep of fire, just over 30 seconds in length. They consist of solely a silence. A promotional video for the album jokingly labeled it as the most silent album ever recorded.
Speaker 1:The band encouraged fans to stream the album on a loop overnight while they were sleeping hence the name with each streaming costing seven what is it? .7 cents or whatever? It's estimated the streaming uh, the album for seven hours would accumulate 5.88 in royalty payments. Over 840 streams and 100 people doing the same with each device would accumulate 588 in payments. Are you following
Speaker 1:this? The band's founder, jack Stratton, explained that it was a stunt. He said it was a stunt Was influenced by an interview with Ron Fair he had heard on the Pensados Place podcast, there you go, where Fair discussed how the cover of Lady Marmalade that he produced for the film Moulin Rouge was only available on the film's soundtrack album Blah, blah, blah, whatever, anyhow, meaning the consumers would have to pay for the entire album just to get one song. Stratton goes on to say well, with the technology available, that dictates the packaging of music, whether it's a 3-minute 7-inch or a 40-minute 12-inch or an 8-minute 12-inch single, this is a lot. It does whatever, it doesn't matter. That's just all,
Speaker 1:whatever. Here's the name of the 10 tracks. Okay, no kidding. The first track is entitled Z. Second track is entitled ZZ. The third track you'll see a pattern here is entitled ZZZ Right, the fourth track, zzzz, the fifth ZZZZZ. You see what I'm saying, so you get
Speaker 1:that. So, yeah, so I'm playing it right now, isn't it great? I'll just keep playing this. I'll just keep playing this as we go out. Does this count as a song? I don't know if this count as a song. I don't know if this counts as a song. Hmm, maybe I should go. This is actually playing right now. Wolfpack. Maybe I should grab a record randomly while we're live on the air. Let me walk over to my shelf. Hold on, let me see what I got here. Hold on, hang in there. What do we have? Because I don't think. I don't think we can end it with wolfpack playing this particular tune, zzz. Whatever track they're on, all right, I just grabbed one by at random here. All right, let me see what I got. I do want to pull up some information on this. What is this now? What is it? Oh boy, all right, let me see. I've never heard of this, never.
Speaker 1:Hmm, never yeah, I've never heard of this. I think I've heard of the group. Let me see if I can just get some information on this here, because I don't know. Alright, so this is huh. Oh yeah, here we go. Yeah, I found something on it. Oh, all right, so this is huh. Oh yeah, here we go. Yeah, I found something on it. I want to play this Trailer Park Boys clip for you. So bad, I want to play it for you. Anyone watch Trailer Park Boys with Bubbles and Julian and Ricky Just three of the three the members of it oh god, no, now that I've said it, I gotta play it. Ricky can never get the terms right. He never gets his words right. Here is and there's cursing trigger warning two turnips in heat. Looks like we have no choice. We're gonna need two turnips in heat. Looks like we have no choice.
Speaker 2:We're gonna need two turnips in heat. Two turnips in heat. What the fuck are you talking about?
Speaker 1:That's what people say Just get fucky and eat two turnips in heat. I don't really know what it means. I guess cooks them or gets them expanded, takes the fucking turnips to a whole other level you never heard this. Ricky, it's turn up the heat. No, I've heard that, but you never heard this. Ricky, it's turn up the heat? No, I've heard that, but this is two turnips and it's different.
Speaker 2:No, it's not, Ricky, you got it mixed up bud.
Speaker 1:It's turn up the heat. That's what they fucking say. It's a fucked up situation.
Speaker 2:You can't just figure it out?
Speaker 1:Two turnips and heat. It's not two turnips and heat. What is it then? Turn up?
Speaker 3:the heat. Why, why are you trying to fucking cook?
Speaker 1:turnips. How do you cook turnips boys? How it doesn't matter.
Speaker 2:You cook turnips with heat, ricky, there's nobody disagreeing with that, but the expression doesn't involve turnips at all. Maybe you haven't heard it.
Speaker 1:Maybe you haven't heard it, nobody's heard it it's fucked.
Speaker 3:Turnips are a whole different fucking animal aren't they?
Speaker 1:Turnips are fucking vegetables, Ricky. Well, whatever they are, they cook this and everything else, and if you can get them fucking cooked or heated up, then you're going to figure everything out.
Speaker 3:I can't listen to you. I can't look at me.
Speaker 2:Turnips aren't involved in the expression.
Speaker 1:It's just your fucking opinion, isn't it? Anyway, if I think about two turnips and getting them expanded with heat, when you turn up the heat to get the fucking turnips in the heat, I think about breaking the house with fucking alarm systems. That's what we need to do. I'm sorry that makes me laugh. I love trailer park boys. All right, that was a random little break. God Pat's Peeps 249.
Speaker 1:All right, this song is a lullaby. This is one I just plucked off the shelf. Really, it's a lullaby written and performed by an australian pop group. Well, this is actually a cover of the original done by malvina reynolds, uh, and it is this group's second recording. It went to number two. Wow, a lullaby went to number two on the UK singles chart. Song tells a comforting story of the journey through nighttime made by the little traveler's children on board a train with a sandman as a guard. Wow Huh. Performed by this group with Bobby Richards and his orchestra on the 1964 album Hide and seekers. Uh was subsequently recorded and released as a single in 1966.
Speaker 1:I'm looking at the record. It's kind of a I don't know, like almost a lime green colored label promotion record. It's got several radio station stickers, some writing on it, which the writing in a pen says 127.67. So again this came out. It says well, it says right there, yes, okay. So the pen on the record label says 127.67, and, like I said, it was released on December 28th of 66. So, yeah, so it's been sitting in this record sleeve since 1967. And I'm looking at the record right now and it's in really nice condition. Oh my goodness. Hmm, yeah, I don't know if I've heard it. Maybe once I play it I'll go oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, let's see. Spent 15 weeks on the UK singles chart, let's see. Well, let's just play it. This is Morning Town Ride. Morning Town Ride by the Seekers. Let me see if we know this one. Bride by the Seekers.
Speaker 3:Let me see if we know this. One Train whistle blowing Makes a sleepy noise. Underneath their blankets Go all the girls and boys.
Speaker 1:This is like the folk era or something, I don't know this one. How about?
Speaker 3:you at the engine. Fireman rings the bell, sandman swings the lantern to show that all is well yeah, this is like the early folk era or something.
Speaker 1:remember that short period of time. The seekers, the kingsmen was it the kingsmen? Kingston Trio, peter Paul and Mary, the Armstrong and Getty Travelers. Thank you for listening to the Pats Peeps podcast 249,. My friends, enjoy your Friday and we'll see you on the radio.
