Pat's Peeps Podcast
Ep. 292 Today's Peep Shames the Disgraceful Gang Violence-Inciting Vice Mayor (whatever that is) of Cudahy, Thus We Dedicate today's Rare-Record Spin to Her, It's a Lost but Memorable Elton Hit, Plus "What Else Is On?" (Hint, Stuff You Didn't Expect)
Step into the world of one of America's last surviving local radio talk shows with Pat Walsh's Pat's Peeps podcast episode 292. Broadcasting from the beautiful foothills of Northern California, Pat celebrates his growing audience while delivering a unique blend of news analysis, comedy, and music appreciation that mainstream media simply can't match.
At the heart of this episode is Pat's unflinching coverage of a shocking controversy involving Cudahy Vice Mayor Cynthia Gonzalez, who appeared in a social media video seemingly calling on local gang members to impede ICE operations in Los Angeles. With characteristic directness, Pat breaks down the situation, sharing audio of the Vice Mayor questioning where "all the cholos are at" and why they aren't defending their "hood" against what she calls "the biggest gang there is"—ICE. The Department of Homeland Security's response, describing her comments as "despicable" and noting a 500% increase in assaults against ICE officers, adds critical context to this disturbing story.
The podcast seamlessly transitions between serious commentary and entertainment, featuring classic comedy bits including a parody game show called "Catch It and You Keep It," where contestants attempt to catch items thrown from a ten-story building, and a satirical segment about ghosts receiving social security benefits. These moments of levity showcase the freedom and creativity that independent broadcasting enables—a refreshing departure from corporate radio formats.
Music lovers will especially appreciate Pat's deep dive into Elton John's 1974 hit "The Bitch Is Back," complete with fascinating trivia about its creation, controversy, and musical contributors including Dusty Springfield on backing vocals. Pat's personal anecdote about using the song as a "theme song" for a tired colleague showcases the human connection that makes local radio special.
Join the growing Pat's Peeps community for this blend of commentary, comedy, and musical appreciation that reminds us why independent voices matter in today's media landscape. Subscribe now and catch episode 293 tomorrow—this is radio as it was meant to be!

Speaker 1:Unlike watch this shift of topics, unlike the vice mayor excuse me of Cudahy, a little serious story to drop on you today Outlandish, ridiculous In my estimation. This so-called vice mayor should be investigated, should be arrested. Cynthia Gonzalez is facing criticism. She was on social media Again, vice mayor of this little city, cudahy, where it appeared more than appeared in my estimation, that she urged local gang members to impede immigration operations that are continuing throughout Los Angeles.
Speaker 1:Now the idiotic statement from our idiotic attorney, damian Martinez, says that the purpose of the controversial video was to encourage your local community to exercise their First Amendment rights to free speech. Unfortunately, well, that's just not true and all you have to do is watch it. If you're going to be honest with yourself, just watch it. She is definitely calling out gangs who seem to be well, let's just say, less than enthusiastic when it comes now that ICE is back in town. So essentially, what she's encouraging are illegal gangs to come out and defend their turf against an even bigger badder gang, as she says here, which she considers ICE to be the bigger badder gang, and I just honestly am blown away by this.
Speaker 4:Nbc News 4 LA this video is getting a lot of traction national attention to. Like you said, the Department of Homeland Security shared it to their social media account.
Speaker 5:I want to know where all the cholos are at in Los Angeles, 18th Street, florencia, where's the leadership at? Because you guys are all about territory. And this is 18th Street and this is Florencia. You guys tag everything up claiming hood. And this is 18th Street and this is Torrance, and you guys tag everything up claiming hood. And now that your hood's being invaded by the biggest gang there is, there ain't a peep out of you.
Speaker 4:The DHS identifies the video as the one now deleted from Carahe Vice Mayor Cynthia Gonzalez's Instagram account. Nbc4 has not independently verified its authenticity, but the DHS called the vice mayor's comments despicable and wrote, quote she calls for criminal gangs, including the vicious 18th Street gang, to commit violence against our brave ICE law enforcement. This kind of garbage has led to a more than 500 percent increase in assaults against our ICE law enforcement officers. Secretary Noem has been clear if you assault a federal officer, you will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Now the city of Cudahy shared this statement prior to the DHS posting on its social media. Reading in part the comments made by the vice mayor reflect her personal views and do not represent the views or official position of the city of Cudahy.
Speaker 4:By the way, all of this comes about two weeks after Gonzalez stood with several SoCal leaders calling for a stop to immigration raids. Now Gonzalez has not responded to our request for comment. The FBI is not commenting in terms of whether or not this is now a federal investigation. Reporting live I'muren coronado for today in la thank you.
Speaker 1:Wow. So again, the federal agents working for the united states, working for you and I are the biggest gang and these folks who defend their home turf, these gangs should take on the biggest gang because it's their home turf, gonzalez, gaining national attention for these asinine comments appearing to some would say. I would say definitely, calling on gang members to take action to resist the immigration officers, the immigration enforcement operations that are going on. So on my show tonight. So I don't belabor the point on this fine monday here on the podcast, I'll belabor that point on my show, which will be the question. Really, so that you're going to put this under freedom of speech inciting gangs against law enforcement. United states law enforcement is um freedom of speech. That's very interesting, very, very interesting.
Speaker 6:Meanwhile, let's see what else is on, and here's your host, bob Fenton.
Speaker 1:Hi folks.
Speaker 6:For you, newcomers, to catch it and you keep it here's how we play the game. Shut up, then you maintain the status. I'm going to question a psychopath. The Orby has nothing to fear.
Speaker 7:It's time once again to play. Catch it and you Keep it, and here's your host.
Speaker 6:Bob Benson. Hi folks, for you newcomers to Catch it and you Keep it. Here's how we play the game. I'm now standing on a balcony on the 10th floor of the CBS Studios. The contestants are gathered below me in the parking lot. My assistants and I will throw prizes down to the crowd and if they catch them, they keep them. That's all there is to it. Now let's turn on the PA system and start the fun. Can you hear me, folks?
Speaker 3:Yeah, yeah.
Speaker 6:Me, me, me. Who's you?
Speaker 3:I'm dressed like a tuna.
Speaker 6:Who do we have first Phil?
Speaker 7:Well, Bob, our first contestant is a consulting engineer who used to play center field for his high school baseball team. Meet Mr Ronald Hodgson of Canoga Park, California.
Speaker 6:Well, welcome aboard, ron, and tell me how were you out there in center field, ron? Did you drop many?
Speaker 7:Oh, I booted a few.
Speaker 6:Well, let's hope you're in top form today, ron, because I'm holding a 21-jewel Benruss wristwatch. How would you like to give it a try, you bet? Then get ready, because here it comes and he caught it. Take a look inside the box, ron.
Speaker 8:There's a watch and money.
Speaker 6:Yes, it's a surprise bonus of two crisp hundred dollar bills. Now, Ron, I it's a surprise bonus of two crisp $100 bills. Now, Ron, I'm holding a lovely piece of American Tourister luggage. Would you like to try for it? Well, I don't know. I'm going to open this suitcase, Ron, and place inside it a $500 Spiegel catalog gift certificate. Now, how do you feel?
Speaker 4:Can I ask my wife Go for it, Ron Go for it.
Speaker 7:Well, okay, she's the boss.
Speaker 6:It's a bit on the bulky side, so you'll have to be pretty agile.
Speaker 7:I'll give it a try. Ron had better be agile indeed, because what he doesn't know is that, in addition to the $500 Spiegel catalog gift certificate, the suitcase also contains not one, not two, but three solid gold bars weighing 85 pounds each, and after a 100-foot fall, this baby's going to carry quite a load.
Speaker 6:Get ready, Ronald Hodgson of Canoga Park, California, because here it comes, we are free. I guess Ron booted another one and I'm afraid his brand-new watch got spoiled in the bargain Moving right along. It's catch-all time when we'll just toss merchandise over the side and whoever catches it keeps it. Are you ready? Then here goes Can you describe some of the action, phil?
Speaker 7:Be glad to Bob. An elderly woman has just snagged a sunbeam toaster and, whoops, A Hamilton Beach electric knife has come down. Point first, I'm afraid, on a man dressed as some sort of vegetable. I think it's a turnip. Oh, there's something. A lady was so pleased over catching a Sears completely immersible electric coffee maker that she failed to notice a plummeting Tappan gas range. Tappan, the leader in kitchen appliances since 1881. Most of the contestants managed to dodge the amount of freezer, but the year's supply of Gaines dog food certainly caused quite a stir. Three couples joined up and made a great try for the dining room set from Ventura Collection by Keller.
Speaker 6:Two or three more and they just might have. There goes the fanfare that announces our mystery package. Remember, this package could contain anything from feathers to lead balloons. So while the contestants get ready, phil will let the home audience in on the secret.
Speaker 7:Today's mystery package contains a dream house, that's right. A prefabricated golden medallion home for the ultimate in total electric living, complete with wall-to-wall carpeting and a real brick fireplace. Altogether it weighs over 46 tons Are you ready, then here it comes.
Speaker 6:That about wraps up today's show. But nobody goes away a loser, because every contestant gets a Parker Brothers. Catch it and you keep it game To play and enjoy in your own home, see you tomorrow.
Speaker 1:You're listening to Pat's Peeps 292. Your call is very important to us. Your estimated wait time is 31 minutes. Time is 31 minutes. Right now we're busy helping other customers that are slightly more important than you.
Speaker 8:Thank you for your patience, elon. You have no right to take away Social Security benefits from millions of Americans over 120 years old. That's right. It's a constitutional crisis. That's right, maxine. It's a threat to our democracy.
Speaker 8:Chuck, there is clearly evidence of fraud happening in Social Security. How else to explain the checks going to people 140 years old? Who are these people supposed to be? Vampires, not exactly, but the answer is actually much Simpler than fraud. You see, there are things in this world, dead things, many of them relying heavily on disability checks. Chuck, if dead people are receiving disability checks, that's fraud. Let's just say because someone is dead, that doesn't mean they're no longer eligible for Social Security.
Speaker 8:Are you guys trying to say there are ghosts receiving benefits? It's the only logical explanation besides fraud, which is clearly unlikely. Can you prove it to me? Yes, we can Meet us at the Congressional Cemetery tonight at midnight. Maybe once you meet someone who depends on Social Security checks, you'll change your mind about cutting them off. Go ahead, elizabeth. Right, stopping fraud in Social Security is somehow anti-democracy. Who dares disturb my gay kissing? Oh, it's you. Where the hell is my social security check? I have bills to pay. You know I'm working on it, benjamin. You see Elon, without social security payments, homosexual ghosts like Benjamin Martin can't afford to eat. Wait a minute. You're stopping my benefits because you think it's impossible to be 130? I'm 287 years old. You must be an idiot. Thank God I have highly ethical geniuses like Elizabeth Warren and Chuck Schumer to watch my back, or who knows what else you do, won't you?
Speaker 3:listen. When I first met, you Didn't realize I can't forget you or your surprise. You introduced me to my mind and left me wanting you and your kind. City cross Lake Gallifrey.
Speaker 9:City cross Lake Gallifrey 25-0624, and this time we'd like to congratulate our final two contestants, samuel Banks and Eddie the Brick Harrison. Just as a reminder, the winner tonight will be receiving a full tuition scholarship. Are you two ready to begin? Alright, samuel, the first word is for you and the word is holla.
Speaker 2:I'm sorry. Could you repeat the word?
Speaker 9:Holla as in holla back at me, playa. Could I have the definition please? Yes, to call out or communicate with Holla.
Speaker 8:H-O-L-L-A Holla.
Speaker 9:That is correct, Eddie. Your word is dog.
Speaker 7:Dog D-A-W-G Dog.
Speaker 9:Correct what, Sam? Your next word is popo.
Speaker 2:Yeah, I'm gonna need the definition again.
Speaker 9:Popo, a noun meaning police officers or other law enforcement entities. As in yo, we had better bounce because the popo be all up in here. Could I have the origin? It just says P Diddy.
Speaker 2:Congratulations on your new Dixon City 100.
Speaker 8:We've got selection.
Speaker 1:A thousand cars to choose from Our service can't be beat.
Speaker 8:Bumper to bumper you can't lose. So when it comes to your next car, we have just one thing to say Get exactly what you want. Come to Dixon City Hyundai. Safe, safe, safe, safe, safe. Every day Safe Dixon City Hyundai style.
Speaker 10:This man needs help. His baby mama put him out and he ain't got no furniture Let him have it. Boss, lady, boss, lady. This man needs a bed and all he can afford is $69 a month. How he gonna get another one without a bed? Come on, baby. This man needs a TV for his bedroom. All he can afford is $59 a month. You know, he got all them children 73 inches. Baby, boss, lady, boss, lady. This man needs air conditioning.
Speaker 1:Actual commercial. That was an actual TV commercial, by the way. Credit to National Lampoon Radio Hour. Herb Alpert, al Berry Check out his cartoons Bill Klintock, ozzy and Chicago mashup here on Pat's Peeps 292. I just thought it was fair. You know that we actually present to you some other things that you might be missing out on here on this fine Monday afternoon. Thank you for listening once again. I pulled out a rare record out of my 45 collection today. This is on what is the name of this?
Speaker 4:What is the name of this.
Speaker 1:And, by the way, it has an MCA torn paper cover that needs to be replaced. This record is in pretty good condition Not the best, but pretty good. Let's see. It is on man OJM. Huh, I don't know, you just don't see this one very often. For sure Black label. It's got some interesting yellow graphics I I unfortunately really cannot describe to you. I believe it's.
Speaker 1:This came out on mca, so this is some sort of a subsidiary, I think, of mca. I don't know what this is, if it was after market, but it's a rock song written by this English musician, very, very famous and very famous songwriter. There's a big hint right there. These two worked very well together, had a lot of hits, extremely popular. This was the second single released from this artist's 1974 album and many of you will get it right on the nose when I say this Caribou went to number one in Canada. This was his sixth in that country. Number one hit Went to number four in the US, number 15 in the UK. I'm surprised it didn't go to number one here, because it really was on the radio all the US. Number 15 in the UK. I'm surprised it didn't go to number one here, because it really was on the radio all the time for a period there the lyrics parroting this artist's celebrity lifestyle. In the US it was certified gold 13th of September 95 by the Recording Industry Association of America and the song, according to the artist said.
Speaker 1:The idea was to create the song that was inspired not by either the artist nor the songwriter directly, but instead by the songwriter's wife at the time, maxine Fiedelman, who would use this phrase when the artist was in a bad mood. The artist who's singing the song, the songwriter's wife, maxine, would use this phrase when the artist was in a bad mood. The songwriter then wrote the lyrics and then later this artist would comment you know, it's kind of my theme song, which I'm going to tell you a true story. The song originally is written in A-flat major, later performed live a half step lower in the key of G major. According to Cashbox, this artist and the band were in rare form here, proving that rock comes as easily as the ballads do, that the hooks are awesome, incredible, they said, the vocals intense, the playing's just right on the spot. Right there Called it a rambunctious rouser. That doesn't mince words. Now, this is true too.
Speaker 1:There was a bit of controversy with this because there were several radio stations in the US that refused to play this song. Radio stations elsewhere refused to play it because of the word that's in the title and in the song. The program director in 1976, for example, wpix in New York, telling Billboard we will play records that are borderline, suggestive records, such as Disco Lady by Johnny Taylor. However, we will not play this song by this artist. We don't play those type of records. We won't, no matter how popular they get. The artist responded to the controversy saying yeah, some radio stations in America are more puritanical than others. Oh, that's great. Well, for those who didn't play it, you know too bad, but it was played in my area for sure.
Speaker 1:When I was working at KFBK as the sports guy many years ago, I would play a song for the morning editor at the time, judy, or maybe it was the afternoon. Judy might have been in the afternoons Anyhow, it doesn't really matter, but I'd play a song for her when she she walked in the room, something she really liked, like Bruce Springsteen. She was from Jersey, so I might play something just to lighten the mood, you know, for her. And then one time this co-worker, marna, said gee, it must be nice to have a theme song every time you walk in the room. I wish I had a theme song, pat. So the next day, into my recollection, she had to start coming in early in the mornings, so she. So she started walking in at I don't know 5, 30 or whatever in the morning. You could tell she was tired because I was too. And I I said, do you want a theme song? So lovingly and teasingly for a while and she loved it. I would play this as her theme song Elton John, the Bitch Is Back.
Speaker 3:Pat's Peeps 292.
Speaker 1:I love that guitar riff. I think this is one of his best rockers as a matter of fact, I can binge.
Speaker 3:I can binge, drop a bell on a cue.
Speaker 1:It's the way that I move the thing that I do, Considering the fact that it was directed towards Elton apparently, I must say he had a great sense of humor about it.
Speaker 3:Turned it right into a huge selling hit record.
Speaker 1:And I do agree. The band is in really top form there. Elton on piano and vocals, davey Johnstone on electric guitars. Let's see who's on the sax Lenny Pickett is on the tenor sax, dee Murray on the bass, nigel Olsen drums the Tower of Power horn section. Ray Cooper on tambourine, clyde King backing vocals, shirley Matthews backing vocals, jesse Smith and Dusty Springfield on backing vocals. Thank you for listening. This bitch will be back tomorrow. That's Beeps 293. See you on the radio.
