Ep. 308 Today's Peep Is a Mini Pod-The Wednesday Chronicles: Hump Day Hoedown, Wild World of Sports and Evil Knievel
Have you ever stopped to consider the quiet power of Wednesday? That overlooked middle child of the week actually carries more historical significance, pop culture references, and practical advantages than you might realize.
Join me on this nostalgia-filled journey as I smoke a cigar and reminisce about the golden age of weekend television. Remember ABC's Wide World of Sports with that iconic introduction? "The thrill of victory... and the agony of defeat." I can still picture those Saturday afternoons with my dad, him nursing a Falstaff beer and Lucky Strike, while we watched in awe as Evel Knievel attempted his death-defying stunts. For a moment in the 1970s, that jumpsuit-wearing daredevil was even cooler than Superman! His slow-motion crash at Caesars Palace might just be the most captivating sports footage ever captured.
But this episode is really a celebration of Wednesday itself. Did you know it was named after Woden, the most important god in the Germanic pantheon? Or that in many Slavic languages, the word for Wednesday literally translates to "middle"? Perhaps most useful of all - research shows bosses are most receptive to requests (like raises or time off) on Wednesdays! We also explore Wednesday's appearances throughout pop culture, from Simon and Garfunkel's "Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M." to the delightfully macabre Wednesday Addams who stole our hearts.

Speaker 1:Looking out the studio windows into the beautiful foothills of Northern California on another wacky, weird weather day it is overcast and yet it is hot, and then the sun's out. Sun's out now, but we get some clouds rolling in and suddenly it's overcast. So really cool weather, amazing. I always say it, but this is the craziest year weather-wise, the nicest that I can remember here in Northern California. Remember patspeepscom.
Speaker 1:Now, I've been thinking about this. Okay, please, just for a second. I want to say this I understand that we're going to add more businesses here Now. We're going to add things like food, like places we can go to get food. Right now we have things like you know well, if you go, look at Pats Peeps, you'll see our mall. But I want to add more things that are like you can kind of drive by get food, and maybe you know donuts, tacos, you know hamburgers, things like that. We're giving you coupons. So be looking for that, because that's coming very soon. Again, we're unveiling this as we can and we want to give you more things to choose from when you go to the Pats Peeps mall. Okay, so again trying to support local business.
Speaker 1:Funny, I'm sitting here today as we get ready to do the Pat's Peeps. I'm smoking a cigar man. I have cut back on cigars. I have really cut back. I always do this. I think, oh, how cool I can have a cigar and do my podcast. It's very difficult to do a cigar and podcast at the same time, just like it is to eat and do a podcast or a radio show. By the way, I'm the host of the pat wall show on kfpk radio sacramento 93.1 fm. 15. 30 am streaming live everywhere on all your iheart app and all the platforms, just like this is. And we've had great guests both on the, on the podcast and on the radio show. So thank you to everyone who's listening. And you know what? If you're listening to me right now, I just really want you to know how much I appreciate it.
Speaker 1:Okay, as I'm getting ready to do this, I have my TV on. I've got to keep my cigar going. I watch so many things that remind me of my childhood. All of a a sudden, as I'm watching, I mean it's just youtube and uh, and you know, random things will pop up and you kind of go down that rabbit hole for a minute. I don't have a lot of free time, but I watch videos and I'm looking for things that that are interesting. You know that I want to talk about on the show, on the podcast, here, and so in doing so, random things will pop up and today, uh, something popped up. I'm trying to pull it up right now. I'm buying myself time, uh, but I remember this so well when I was a kid like it'd be a saturday afternoon we've talked about this before where maybe there wasn't much on TV, like your choices were limited.
Speaker 1:Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom See Jim as he's up in the tree fighting the python. I'll be down here with my insurance. We've talked about Morris, taylor and Chico. But how about this? If you're of a certain age, you've got to remember this.
Speaker 2:Spanning the globe to bring you the constant variety of sport that's right, the thrill of victory yes
Speaker 1:and the agony of defeat, with the skier biffing it over the off the ski ramp there the the guy jumping the barrels. Athletic competition. This ice skates, olga Corbett. I'd be sitting there watching that, yes.
Speaker 3:Ba-ba-ba-ba-ba Sears.
Speaker 2:Ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba, uh-huh, ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba.
Speaker 3:And by Rolaid For acid indigestion, Rolaid. Rolaid spells relief. Jim McKay 27 times its weight in excess stomach acid.
Speaker 1:That's Jim McKay. Remember he became popular during that Israeli hostage crisis at the 72 Olympics. He covered that. He became very popular after that. But I remember sitting, you know you'd be in the living room on the weekend. My dad would be sitting there drinking like a Falstaff, smoking a Lucky Strike, something like that, watching a wide world of sports. And so that popped up on my TV. I'm like wow, and it was a bus jump from Evel Knievel in 1975. You know, I got to thinking about that. There was no one more popular at the time than Evel Knievel. He even had like one of those, you know, elvis hey man, I got my the jumpsuit right. That dude looks so cool Like he looked cooler than Superman. He was more cool than Superman for a while, more popular. I'm sorry Superman fans, but I remember a period of time in the 70s, evel Knievel, super popular man.
Speaker 1:People could not wait to watch what he was going to do. I'm sure that ABC's Wide World of Sports signed him to a lucrative contract. I mean, think about it. They had to like hey, man, if you're going to do this, do it live on our show and that way, you know, you make a lot of money. It was the biggest show on air really at the time, especially on the weekends, and so you'd watch it. And I would still contend that that slow-mo video when he tried to jump the fountain at Caesars in Vegas if that's not the top sports film of all time, I don't know what is Definitely I'd put that at the top In terms of most intriguing and fascinating. I'd put that at the top In terms of most intriguing and fascinating. I'll put that at the top. Now I might be forgetting about some, but certainly if I even thought of some more which I could, Intriguing-wise, I'm not saying the greatest moments of all time, I'm just saying the ones you look at and you go wow, wow, that was pretty incredible and unusual for sure. And he's flopping around breaking every bone in his body, evel Knievel.
Speaker 1:Then he tried to jump the Snake River Canyon. You remember that in the 80s, like the early to mid 80s, and he did it like that rocket kind of motorcycle thing and I thought, you know, as they say, jump the shark. If there was anything any time where Evel Knievel, as they say, jumped the shark, went a little too far, became a little ridiculous. You know if I might say it was that in my opinion and that was way before jumping the shark was a thing Before. Fonzie actually jumped the shark in Happy Days for those of you who know but it wasn't really. It didn't seem like a motorcycle, he didn't make it Basically, he was in this rocket thing and it just pooped out there halfway over the canyon and floated down with a parachute.
Speaker 1:Everyone, people couldn't wait for that. For Evel Knievel to try to jump the Snake River Canyon Absolutely amazing man. But Evel Knievel, I, to jump the Snake River Canyon Absolutely amazing man. But Evil Knievel I mean, yeah, that just again. That just takes me back to a time as a kid. That guy was brave man. Anyhow, happy Wednesday to you. Everybody Sure appreciate you being here. Guess what day it is? Oh, no, Guess what day it is, huh, anybody, julie.
Speaker 3:Hey, guess what day it is oh, no, guess what day it is. Huh, anybody, julie. Hey, guess what day it is. Yes, oh, come on, I know you can hear me. Yeah, mike, mike, mike, mike, mike. What day is it? Mike Leslie, guess what today is.
Speaker 2:It's hump day, what?
Speaker 3:Ronnie, how happy are folks who save hundreds of dollars switching to Geico. I'd say happier than a camel on Wednesday Hump.
Speaker 2:Day Get happy, get Geico.
Speaker 1:Geico, remember that. Happy Hump Day to ya. That's right, it's Wednesday, celebrating Wednesday. I think Wednesday gets overlooked. I mean Monday, there's going to be songs, there's going to be things, comedians talking about Mondays, because Monday, monday blase got to back to work. Returning to the week, you know Tuesday afternoon, you know the moody blues, I don't know. Wednesday Does it get all its glory. You know there is Wednesday morning 3 am Simon and Garfunkel. That's a little Wednesday for you. The Pats Peeps 308.
Speaker 2:I can hear the soft breathing of the girl that I love, as she lies here beside me, asleep with the night.
Speaker 1:And her hair in the air I'm pretty sure Maybe it's me, and I certainly could be wrong Reflecting the glow of the moon. I've been wrong a lot of times. I'll admit that I don't think this song says anything about Wednesday.
Speaker 2:Does it. She is soft, she is warm, but my heart remains heavy. Yeah, that's great. What day is it? She is soft, she is warm, but my heart remains heavy, yeah that's great.
Speaker 1:What day is it?
Speaker 2:And I watch as you burst. Gently rise, gently fall.
Speaker 1:Say Wednesday, say it, say it, for I know with the first light of dawn.
Speaker 2:I'll be leaving Wednesday, and tonight will be all I have left To recall.
Speaker 1:Oh, yes, there's no Wednesday in there. What about Elvis Costello Wednesday week? There you go.
Speaker 2:You can meet and I will follow. See a chance on cheek to cheek. You'll remember me tomorrow, bet you won't give a damn about Wednesday, that's right.
Speaker 1:Happy Wednesday to you. Support local business patspeepscom. Thank you very much. There's always Charles Mingus Wednesday night prayer meeting. Happy Wednesday, everybody Speaking of Wednesday, little known facts.

Speaker 1:The astrological sign for Wednesday. I didn't know it had its own astrological sign. I didn't know that. I'll have to get someone on to talk about that sometime, but it is, I like that, right there, same as the astrological sign for the planet Mercury. And on Wednesday.
