Ep. 340 Today's Peep Enjoys Gray Skies, Fast Strides, A Weekend Football Recap, Bad Workout Videos and Calls Out Bad Fan Behavior from the Weekend's Ryder Cup in New York

Pat Walsh

A gray morning, a faster pace, and a head full of sports and music—sometimes the best conversations start on a walk. We kick things off with the simple joy of moving, then ride the high of a Dodgers sweep in Seattle and cut through the easy “they bought it” narrative with real stories of development, reinvention, and a farm system that keeps the engine running. From there, we pivot to the NFL’s weekly reality check: injuries that bend storylines, Max Crosby bulldozing through blocks like a one-man storm, and a wide-open NFC West that feels one big play away from a reshuffle.

We also talk place, ritual, and what it means to belong to a team. Home stadiums that don’t always feel like home, a friend remembered with a jersey and a quick tap for luck, and a Thursday night Rams–49ers tilt that puts health, coaching, and nerve to the test. Puka Nacua’s rise gets real attention—13 catches, 170 yards, and the kind of toughness that makes defensive backs think twice. He’s not just a hot hand; he’s a compass for where the offense wants to go.

Then there’s the other side of fandom: when the noise goes too far. The Ryder Cup showcased world-class golf and some bottom-shelf behavior, from heckling during strokes to a drink thrown at a player’s spouse. We draw the line, plainly—cheer loud, keep it fair, and remember that respect is part of the game. To cool the jets, we end with a needle drop: a white-label Motown 45, the Jackson 5, and a few quiet minutes to breathe. It’s the reset that makes the next stride possible.

If this mix of walking wins, Dodgers grit, Rams hope, and a plea for better fan etiquette hits home, tap follow, share with a friend who loves sports with soul, and leave a quick review telling us your take on where passion ends and respect begins.

SPEAKER_03:

Yep, out here for Pat's Peach three hundred and forty taking a walk. I'm loving the weather today as it is gray and cloudy. I just love when there's a change in the weather. From winter back to spring. Hope you're having a beautiful day. Hope you had a great weekend. And yes, on this lovely day I'm taking advantage of it as I'm out walking and getting more and more and more used to this, which is just fantastic. I find myself going at a much quicker pace, going up elevations, and feeling very good about uh getting out here and doing this more and more. So we know the raining and all of that, but I'm still gonna try to do it during that. So got people out here working on their driveways. Good morning. How you doing? Beautiful, huh? Loving it. You have a nice day. Yeah, it's so nice. I like good neighbors. You know, like a good neighbor, never mind. Because the rest of that slogan is I don't know how true that is anymore. For those who of you who even remember that. Ah, you know, it was nice yesterday. Rarely do I get the opportunity to relax and not do anything. Yesterday presented that opportunity. So I had a date with my sofa man. That's what I was doing. I'm staying home. I was committed to that. I watched my Dodgers pull the sweep from the Mariners in Seattle, two 90 win clubs, both headed to the postseason. Something to prove. So proud of my team. And man, I know there's a lot of haters. Sorry. That's just look, that's the way it is. I know. You know. So four four consecutive Nash League West crowns. I know many of you are hating me right now. I'm sorry, but no, I'm not really sorry though. I'm not trying to rub it in. I'm just making a comment. Third, what is it? 12 out of the last 13 years, I believe. Or 13 out of 14. One of the I just couldn't kind of spaced. But anyhow, National League West. So you know what? If it was your team, you'd be proud to. Before you jumped on the oh, they bought Michael. Oh, they bought there's a bot team, yeah. They have a few high high-priced players. They also have people like Max Muncie, who was a scrub and with the A's, they didn't want him. Remember when Justin Turner was a Dodger, one of the most valuable Dodgers ever. Came from the Mets where he was barely being used. Chris Taylor and his run there, he had a profound impact. KK Hernandez, who went what, 121 with Boston during a trade, couldn't do squat, comes back to the Dodgers as a fire plug. Michael Conforto, Teosca Hernandez. So yeah, they got another picture that's high priced too. So what? But that evens out with guys who are unwanted and the best farm club in baseball. So I'm proud of them. Then the Rams yesterday, I know. Again. Alright, I'll start maybe. Well yeah, they won, but let's start with the 49ers. Tough. I mean, should Brock Purdy have been out there with a turf toe. You know, the 49ers had four turnovers in that game yesterday. A lot of their team is now injured. And uh Pearsol was injured yesterday. Can't remember who. I haven't really seen the uh the injury list, but you know, uh Kittle has been out. Got a lot of techniques, but anyhow, several injuries. They don't have Debo anymore. Juwan Jennings has been hurt in and out of the games, purdy. So I get that. But of course, back in 2022, after the Rams won the Super Bowl, and they started off slow, just like the last two seasons in which they started off slow and then came up came on like gangbusters at the end of the year. You know why? It's because the Rams were injured in 2022, and everyone likes to say, Well, you know, put all their chips in the middle, went for it, won, but then a big drop-off and disappointment the next year because they were injured. So it goes both ways. Your team is injured, that's just what happens. Oh my gosh. Although I will say, as disappointing yet again, as the Raiders were giving up that lead to the bears, the bears. Sorry, I shouldn't have done that. I hate when people do that every time they see the bears. Just like when they say the Raiders, the Raiders, they don't deserve to hear their name like that. So we get the Raiders. Oh god. Except for Max Crosby. That dude, man. He he is a beast. Yesterday, sometime during the game, sometimes during the game, it felt like Max, Mad Max, was a man among boys. Like he was just dominant. He was like playing against Pop Warner. I mean he's everywhere, so you gotta give it up to that dude. Max Crosby. I don't, you know, hey, I wish they'd they could do better, but I don't know what's going on there. Pete Carroll, he's having a tough time. He's a good guy, but hey, you know, I hate that expression. It is what it is, but the Raiders have been that team for quite some time now. Who knows? Maybe they'll turn the page. And by the way, let's get more Raider and Ram fans in our stadiums, by the way. Yesterday I it was a good showing by the I I didn't get really honestly, I don't know what the crowd makeup was for the Raider game. I know that a lot of visiting teams, it's kind of sucks not having that real home team advantage, hometown advantage. But pretty good uh advantage for the Rams at home at SoFi yesterday. Although, again, that's a huge stadium, and they do tend to sell, no matter what team it is, a lot of tickets for the opposing team. And I always put a jersey out for my my late friend Randall, what three years ago now? Every weekend, put out one of his jerseys. You and I, Ram fans, I put it out for him every week. Might sound crazy, I high-five it. I talk to him like he's sitting next to me. How about that, Randall? Yeah, come on, come on, Randall. Here we go. Tap the jersey. I love you, Randall. I know you do that for me. Love you, brother. And now they're in a dead even tie at three and one with the 49ers, the Seahawks, and the Cardinals with those new spectacular speckled uniforms. What on earth are you thinking with that? Uh they're they're in the basement right now of the NFC West. So what happens this Thursday? This Thursday. It's gonna drive me insane that I am going to be on the air doing my radio show. By the way, Pat Walsh, host of the Pat Walsh show on KFPK Radio in Sacramento. 7 to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday. 93.1 FM, 15.30 a.m. Hi horses! Good morning. Two beautiful horses. You know, people keep telling me I need to come out here with carrots. I hope the owners don't mind, but I'm I might go grab some and take a chance and feed the horse a carrot. They're so friendly. But anyhow, Thursday night football, Rams and the 49ers. 49ers, you know, they're struggling right now. Rams, maybe they take a minute to figure it out. Who knows? One thing I do know, Pukanakua. This dude is tough. 13 receptions, 170 yards. He muscles, man. He I look, I'm biased, but I say he's the best receiver in football right now. 170 yesterday on 13. So, I mean, he could be on the way to a triple crown, just like Cooper Cup was a few years ago. What, 2021? Come up to my porch, finish my walk, sit down in my porch rocket here for a moment. Try to catch my breath. Hoping you're having a blessed day. Hope you don't mind me starting with a little words. Hi to whatever, whoever you are, however you're listening, whether you're taking a walk right now. Hi. Or uh you know, sitting at home or driving. Appreciate all of you, okay? Peeps, peeps. 340. Okay, well, it's been feeling good to do that. Getting out there. Uh yeah. So in terms of working out, I you know, I got to thinking about some of the ways I use this Nike, what is it, the Nike Run Club app. Uh, you know, and I and initially I thought, well, how's an app really gonna how is that gonna motivate me to get out and do more running and walking and what have you? Yeah, in a certain way it has. I mean, it's got a little coach that comes on after you're done. How you doing, Pat? You know, this AI, whatever generated thing. Hey, this is your coach. I just want to tell you a way to get up and get moving, you know, way to go. Not sitting on the couch, you're out there moving, you're getting away, and they're a better man for it. A blah blah blah, right. But more than that, though, it tracks what you're doing, it shows you your elevation, it really tracks how you're performing and all of that. And it begins to show that you're improving. And when you begin that improvement, you know, you start feeling healthier, and I'm really start I'm really enjoying it. I was thinking about some other ways, some other videos. Let's go back in time. Why not?

SPEAKER_13:

Remember some of the workout videos that'll keep you fit? There it is. Jazzer sized 82. There you go.

SPEAKER_03:

Let's listen. This is Jazzer Size 82. This is the original workout 80s video. Maybe we'll get more inspired together.

SPEAKER_14:

Yeah. You ready? Now find that beat. There it is. Oh yeah.

SPEAKER_03:

Oh yeah.

SPEAKER_14:

Oh, now track release, contract, release, contract, release. There you go. Smiling, smiling, smiling, down to the pelvis.

SPEAKER_03:

This might be pre-leg warmers. I know the leg warmers are right in here somewhere.

SPEAKER_13:

Front, back, push it, pull it, push it, pull it, back. Now your favorite thing.

SPEAKER_03:

Oh yeah. That's right.

SPEAKER_14:

Here we go.

SPEAKER_03:

Oh, here we go.

SPEAKER_14:

We're gonna play a little baby.

SPEAKER_03:

This is the cornyest stuff.

SPEAKER_14:

Oh now, me and all of us jazzers, do we? Here we go. We're not gonna have a strut your stuff. That's good. You take it out, dad, and uh, that's right. Uh-huh.

SPEAKER_03:

Oh, yeah.

SPEAKER_13:

Hey! Do it! You gotta do it with us, yeah.

SPEAKER_11:

Oh my dear God.

SPEAKER_10:

Hi. I thought today we'll work on a couple of things, okay? Just straighten them out, a couple of routines, and trying to put them together. Okay. Oh, okay. We start in that position. Uh-huh. And then we move to the left. Move to the left at the right twice, okay?

SPEAKER_03:

Oh my god.

SPEAKER_10:

That's it. That's it. Move. That's move your hip. Come on. That's it. With your arms now. That's it. Okay. Now the second one we're gonna do, we're gonna ball chain with our feet, okay? Okay. I gotta move. Alright. Both sides. So we start now.

SPEAKER_03:

No.

SPEAKER_10:

That's it. Okay, now the third one we're gonna do.

SPEAKER_03:

Alright.

SPEAKER_10:

We're gonna move. But we're gonna start in that position. And then we're gonna move the hip both to the left and to the right, okay? Start that way. That's it. Oh my god! That's it. Twist the battery with it.

SPEAKER_13:

And then don't Are you looking for a looking for something? Where can you be?

SPEAKER_03:

Meanwhile, if you're looking for a date after you work out.

SPEAKER_15:

Early to rise makes a woman healthy, wealthy, and wise. That's why you're wiser than me. It's Steven.

SPEAKER_08:

Hi, I'm Maurice. 80s video dating montage. I'm an executive by day and a wild man by night.

SPEAKER_12:

My name's Monroe. You've probably already noticed that I have incredibly blue eyes. Hi, my name is Phil. Most of my friends call me Big Phil. Okay. Um, I like to talk to people uh deep into the night.

SPEAKER_07:

Hi, my name's Mike, and if you're sitting there watching this tape smoking your cigarette, well, hit the fast forward button because I don't smoke and I don't like people who do smoke.

SPEAKER_08:

I'm not afraid you get stand on my tuxedo if you're not afraid to let the wind mess your hair up a little bit when I take the top down.

SPEAKER_07:

Perhaps even a nice bath with some champagne and candles.

SPEAKER_08:

Hi, Mom.

SPEAKER_12:

Um. I do fashion photography, and I do consider myself a refined valley dude. Okay. I'm looking for a trendy girl with a simple smile. Wait, it says here. Oh, excuse me. I don't know.

SPEAKER_11:

What I'm not looking for is uh some big overgrown monster that's always thinking about food and who so finds to himself a joy doth its winged life destroy. Um I like to uh do a lot of sailing. I like to outdoor activities, I like climbing, I like travel. I took a sponge ball, was pulling them out of a little girl's ear.

SPEAKER_02:

Foxy. I'm looking for the goddess. Are you the goddess? Who is the goddess? The goddess is the woman, is a woman, is any woman, is all women. A figure that is sexy, slim, tight, excellent legs. Uh-huh. Okay. Yeah, sure. 25 year olds subscriber to both Playboy and a New Yorker magazine.

SPEAKER_06:

Meanwhile. Yes, you too can have a body like mine if you're not careful.

SPEAKER_03:

Pathetic, isn't it? Actually, what's really pathetic is the behavior of the U.S. golf fans over the weekend at the Writer Cup at Beth Page. Yelling during shots, cannot seem to conduct themselves with class. Very embarrassing. Tom Watson, an American legend, had to apologize to the European contingent for the behavior of the American spectators. How about that? One of the idiots actually thought it would be a brilliant idea to throw a cup or a drink at Roy McElroy's wife. It is embarrassing.

SPEAKER_05:

Bones, what do we got? We've got Rory who played his second shot from the right first cut. It got away from a little bit as we saw it, putting back down the hill now from some 30, 35 feet.

SPEAKER_04:

Bones, it just seems there's as much pulling for the U.S. and pushing against the Europeans here, especially in this group against Rory.

SPEAKER_05:

Yeah, it's been incredibly vocal out here this afternoon, I have to say. The problem is that as they walk around the green, the crowd has been shouting out time, if you will, you know, counting from one to ten and then on from there. They just, I don't think Rory's looking at the referee now, just asking people to settle down.

SPEAKER_15:

Yeah, after a while, Paul, it can kind of get on your nerves.

SPEAKER_06:

Yeah, his character building, though, for Rory, as I say, he's normally man of the people, and now he's seeing the flip side. And I think in a big context of his career, having this experience in years to come, he looked back on it as being a good experience. And as much as it's uh it's not fun and it's somewhat uncomfortable at the moment, he's reacted very well.

SPEAKER_03:

So as Roy McElroy is preparing to putt, he's frustrated. He's frustrated, he's showing that to the referees uh because there's this noise is going on from the crowd.

SPEAKER_05:

Yeah, it's getting a little out of hand out here right now.

SPEAKER_06:

Well, there's one thing giving stick in between shots, and I think Roddy'd be the first to say that we see his dad there in the background. Jerry is dad.

SPEAKER_15:

You can see him just over there in the one knee.

SPEAKER_06:

It's another thing giving stick while he's addressing the ball and trying to affect his execution of the shot.

SPEAKER_04:

This might have a little pressure on Shane Lowry, too, and he's he's kind of stepped up the last couple holes. He's not getting any views for early.

SPEAKER_05:

I think you know a big part of the issue is the timing of the folks being vocal in the crowd. I mean, it's one thing as Paul says to give him a hard time, but uh you can't do when the guy's over the shot. Let's bring in Brad Gregory of the PGA of America.

SPEAKER_15:

We heard from Kerry Haig in our meeting before this Ryder Cup started, Brad, about what they will do with bad behavior if necessary, if they hear something's over the top.

SPEAKER_09:

Yeah, thanks, Dan. Yeah, Rory's got a right to play. Come into the shot with relatively uh silent. And uh, you know, even if you're on the clock on the clock, you're you're not starting the clock until you're you're free to play without distraction, and certainly this is, and so uh Rory's just taking his time until things settle down, which is perfectly okay.

SPEAKER_15:

So after a lengthy time over that putt.

SPEAKER_06:

If there's any boy's out there looking for a bit of trouble, this is a game they're gonna come and look for. Exactly.

SPEAKER_15:

And you can just see the body language by Rory, who's just over it. Lowry for Bertie. And they just keep wheeling along even through the ball. There we go.

SPEAKER_03:

The body language. Let's see. Tremendo gonna be ashamed of itself. Disgusting and embarrassing. Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_04:

Lava's loud for shame gives any double chance to be concentrated.

SPEAKER_03:

Then at another point, a classless idiot threw a like I said earlier, threw a drink at Roy McElroy's wife. Roy McElroy talked about the crowd.

SPEAKER_01:

How sustainable for the game of golf is the level of abuse that you and others I know, but received um received this weekend. I mean, is it something that you just have to accept, or is it something that's taking the game in a dangerous direction?

SPEAKER_00:

No, I I like I don't think we should ever accept that in golf. Um I think golf should be held to a higher standard than than what was you know than what was seen out there this week. Um golf has the ability to unite people. Golf teaches you very good life lessons, it teaches you etiquette, it teaches you how to play by the rules, it teaches you how to respect people. Um and you know, sometimes this week we didn't see that. So uh no, it this should not be what is acceptable in the Ryder Cup. Um, but you know, we will be making sure to say to our fans in Ireland in 2027 that you know what happened here this week is is not acceptable. And it's you know, I for me it's you know, come and support your home team, you know, come and support your team. You know, I think if I was an American, I would be annoyed that people I didn't hear a lot of shouts for Scotty today, but I heard a lot of shouts against me. And it's like support your players. You know, that's the that's the thing. So um look, it was a rough week for all of us, um, but at the same time, you know, we we shut them up by our performance and how we played, and we we tried to, you know, I I chirp back a few times because it caught to me a few times, but we we tried to handle everything that came our way um with class and poise, and for the most part I felt like we did that.

SPEAKER_03:

45th Ryder Cup. He breathes uh breathes a sigh of relief when it came to an end as the Euros survived the Yanks in a furious rally uh uh in singles yesterday to capture golf's biggest prize again with a 15-13 victory. And you know what? I'm not even upset about it. First of all, I'm not a huge golf fan. Second of all, that was disrespectful. Let's end it on a high note. I yanked this record from my rare 45 collectible shelf. I like this song, I like the I love the this just brings back such good memories. First single released from the third album by this group, written by Barry Gordy, Hal Davis, and Willie Hutch. Recorded by this group, released on Motown Records August 28th, 70. First single, like I said, from the third album produced. Um another, well, there's uh God, there's a two or three good songs on this one that I really like. So this made them the first group to have their first tour singles reach number one, and the first black male group with four consecutive number one pop hits in the same year. And this is the most successful of those singles. This record, let me pull it out of the sleeve here, is on Motown. Uh it's got a sticker, like I said, someone wrote on the radio station 1970 on a sticker. It's got the number 313 on a sticker, it's got says this is 1970 on the other side. White label Motown. Promotional copy, not or Promotional Not For Sale. Same song, both sides. Love this one. Takes me back, I'll be there. The Jackson 5. My favorite era for the Jacksons of any type. Pat's Peeps 340. Happy Monday. It's got a little crackle.com. I would sure appreciate it. Support local business. Thank you for listening. See you on the radio.
