Ep. 348 Today's Peep Finds a Radio Host Walking and Reflecting on Success, Reconnecting with His Son, and Wondering Aloud about the Possibility of Peace. From Ratings to Rain and a special song from Lynyrd Skynyrd
A quiet walk turns into a turning point. On the verge of a Sicily trip, we take stock of a twelve-year run on the Sacramento airwaves—why a talk show built on curiosity and kindness rose to the top—and how a simple, steady approach can outlast the noise. The day carries a different charge too: a viral video from a protest draws both praise and warnings, then sparks the best surprise of all—a call from my son Eric after months of silence. His laughter, a Lynyrd Skynyrd deep cut, and a nod to family music moments become proof that grace can reach places arguments never will.
We don’t stay in one lane. We move from radio philosophy to the anatomy of a civil conversation, from grief’s long echo to the fragile hope of a breakthrough in the Middle East. You’ll hear candid thoughts on media framing and how credit should cross party lines when lives are at stake. Between headlines, there’s everyday joy: a local brewery run by a friend, a band set that hits, a Rams win, and the discipline to keep running even when rain threatens. The thread that ties it all together is simple and stubborn: listen first, keep your humor, and choose decency when the crowd wants a fight.

Now 12 days before my latest journey this time to Sicily for a couple of weeks where we will continue to do the Path Pete podcast. But yes, as you may have guessed already, I'm out of my walk today. Continuing to do this, it's a very beautiful day. It is uh Monday. It's October 13th, 2025. And everything is turning so green. You know, we were just in summer, seems like last week. And as I look around in uh what seemed to be just yesterday, all of this brush around me, all the grass, weeds, and everything, were so dry. And now just after just a little rain and some some clouds here off and on, everything is so beautiful and green. So those of you probably listened to me know that I'm the host of the Pat Wall Show, as heard on KFEK, KFEK Radio in Sacramento, Monday through Friday, 7 to 10 p.m. 93.1 FM, 15.30 a.m. And recently very proud, say for a few days, at least up until tomorrow, very proud to be the number one show in my time slot in the entire Sacramento region. I'm gonna say that again through tomorrow, because tomorrow, because you know what? It takes a while to achieve that. It takes some work. And so I think I can be proud of that. We got an we got like a 9-7 share at BK, which is remarkable. I thank you guys again. So tomorrow is the 12th anniversary of my show. I went into it with the sense, uh, the sense of can we do something different? Because I'd listen to the radio, I'd turn the dial. You know, might be music. Heard that song a million times, why don't you expand the playlist? You know, like Coyote Calhoun in our previous episode, who was fired on the air. But I wanted to do a show, talk format, where I could relate to people, listen to their views, have discussions, but I really wanted to do things different. I wanted to try to be entertaining, be witty, um, bring you facts, companionship, which in return that's certainly what I get, is all of that, which I'm so grateful for. But to not, you know, most of these shows, folks, well, all right, Chad, back to you. Alright, more sports duck. Bob and Chad will be right back with more sports stock, which is fine if you want to sit and listen to sports stuff like that. Great. You know, I'm not trying to bash that. I listen to it sometimes. Fairly often. Or it could be, you know, politics. Seems like every station is trying to be doing politics, trying to be like the next political host. I don't want to do that either. I just didn't want to, you know, be a a niche. This is what we talk about. Because that's not what happens in a real discussion. You know, you discuss whatever you feel like talking about. So uh that's what it's been, and it has been successful because I listen to people, I listen to you. We we converse without being mad at one another or yelling at one another. That's probably the thing that I am most appreciative of. Now, for those of you who saw my video, holy schminoli, did that video the other day downtown Auburn at the liberal protest. I've never posted anything ever that has got such a reaction. Well, by going back to the first one of those I did, which I believe was uh uh April 3rd 21 or 22 now, I did the same thing. And people responded to that because again, you know, you're trying to be nice, trying to understand people, see if you can relate to them, even if you disagree with them, figuring that if you're polite and doing that, then of course you'll be able to, but that uh you know I was wrong, of course. If you watched the video that I posted, and uh that was on Friday. Uh, but now a lot of people have shared it and seen it. And also thank you to those of you who have sent me uh thoughts of hey, be careful, you know, just be careful doing that kind of stuff. Are you okay? And that kind of stuff. And you know, I am. So for that, I am very grateful. I appreciate that more than you might know, but I do. Oh, yesterday. It was just the greatest. I hope you had a great weekend. My day was so incredible yesterday. Wow. You know, and it wasn't just about football. Yeah, that was part of it. My team won. The Rams won. I'm talking about very good company, excellent company. You know, Hillen Brand Brewery, a local Pat's Peeps business, soon to be on our page. I've known Patrick Hillenbrand forever. It is astounding what he has done out there. And seeing a great band out at Hillenbrand. And then as I'm talking to Patrick and a couple of other folks there, just thinking what an incredible day it is, weather-wise and everything, my phone rings. And I look at my phone and it says Eric, and I thought, Eric. Well, I really only well and then I look a little closer and it says Arkansas. My son calling me. If that sounds like I'm excited about that, I'm more than excited. Uh, I've got into this before on a previous podcast when my other son passed away, my son Timothy, back in March of this year. And the connection, because of that, that I've been able to re-establish that connection with my son Eric. Who, for whatever reason, reasons of his own being, or whatever he might, whatever his reasons are, I mean, I would reach out to him constantly, try to connect, and I think he had things going on in his life. That maybe uh, who knows? I don't know, I don't even guess. But we connected after my son Tim died. And I'll never forget he picks up a guitar and he goes, Dad, he's back calling me from Arkansas. I'm gonna play this song for you. I said, What? First of all, Eric, you play a guitar, well, not very well, and I don't sing very well. But you said, you know, I remember everything about you and everything you taught us. And you taught us a lot about music. And a song that when I was a little kid you would play it, that I just loved, is a song called uh All I Can Do Is Write It in a Song. And I was blown away when I heard him say that because again, unless you know Leonard Skinner, 1976, Gimme Back My Bullets album tracks deep. You probably overlooked that song, or maybe you've never heard it. And it's one of my favorites. That album, Ed King had left at the time, and um, so that left six of them instead of seven that was usually in Skinnard, and it was still fantastic. Same old blues, uh, I mean, it's just a great album, in my opinion. He sang it to me. And again, I was blown away. And at the end of it, I said, Wow, Eric, that's more than I could have ever asked for after all of these years. And I said, you know, please, son, after this wonderful phone call where we have now reconnected, let's keep this up. I'll send you a c I'll send you a text or something tomorrow. He sent me some pictures through a text. And we s I sent him some stuff back next day, next day I messaged him, reached out to him, and never got anything back again. So it was this uh it was as if, okay, well, unfortunately, I guess that didn't go as far as I thought and as I wanted it to with that reconnection. So for him now, so that was seven months ago. So for him to call me yesterday out of the blue, when you've after sending so many messages, you kind of I guess you have to accept it for whatever reason. Don't know why, but you accept it. He calls me and he's like, Dad, Eric, I said, I know, I can't believe you called me. This is so exciting. What a great day it is already that you're calling me. Right as I'm talking to the owner of the brewery and another friend, and and he says, Well, first of all, I'm just so proud of you. And I said, What did I do? He goes, I was watching that video, my girlfriend showed me the video. You're out there with those protesters, and dad, you were so nice to them. He says, I was laughing so hard, and he says, He's still laughing on the phone, which to hear him laugh was incredible. To hear my son laugh, unbelievable, and he's like, Yeah, dad. And calling me dad, you know, which was great. And uh I wish I'd have been out there with you, man. I loved it when you started saying, God bless our president, God bless our president, I would have loved to have done that with you, you said. I said, Yeah, that would have been great. The key is being non-aggressive, you know, being a good guy. How you doing there today? Good, good, and uh so that he sees that and then he calls me to tell me that. And then he says, First though, we were looking at your band. She was showing me that you were singing in a rock band. And he goes, man, dad, he goes, that was really awesome. You were singing Stone Temple Pilots, that was so great. You really do a good job, Dad. I was like, oh my God. It was better than I can imagine. Then he says, and then the next video that pops up, it's Uncle Steve. And Uncle Steve's sitting there playing percussions to UFO. Man, it was so great, too. Wow, like I wish I was there to see your band. Like, oh god, this is perfect. Couldn't answer a better thing. On a more enjoyable day, already having a great time. Seeing the massive protests, for goodness sake, there in Tel Aviv. Seeing the huge banner. As I was watching this this morning, Nobel, Trump, wow. I mean, I just can't imagine if this thing goes through and it continues, a whole plan goes into effect and changes that region. How can you not admit it? It's a remarkable thing. I'll tell you, if Biden or Obama or any of those presidents, Clinton, whoever could do that, wouldn't you have to say, gee, that's an amazing thing. So and especially when you see Palestinians chanting Donald Trump, Donald Trump, when you have Israelis saying Donald Trump, Donald Trump, when you have the support that it that this had, that is beyond I think what anyone could have expected, isn't it? If this really a lasting peace, can you imagine? No more people killed. Perhaps people could live side by side. And Israel is no longer threatened. Palestinians have a way of life, they're no longer threatened. I mean after all, no one wants to see anyone murdered or killed. If you're doing, if you're I don't want to get too far into that. I want to keep it, I don't want to get deep into that right now. I just I just think it's an incredible thing if we can see peas. How's that? So credit where credit is due, but to see so much of the world praising it, and even geez. Like if you watch some of these stations like MSNBC or CNN, where that you can see them biting their lip and having to praise this. So Trump did something right. Like this morning, just strictly out of curiosity, and I'm sure that networks like you know MSNBC and CNN will get a little bit of a bump in the ratings today. Because people I think like me are curious to know how they're gonna react to this. Are they gonna give him credit? Can they say anything positive after calling him Hitler and a fascist? It's interesting.
SPEAKER_02:I don't remember Hitler helping to save the Jews.
SPEAKER_01:I don't remember Hitler bringing countries together in a peaceful manner. But as I watched this, I don't even know who it was, some anchor on MSNBC, and I again I can only take it for a couple of minutes. I watched as she had a guest on who did his best also to bite his lip and give a little praise for the president for this deal. Well, you know, still iffy. But when they come back from that story, of course, what does she do? She looks in the camera, she teases ahead. Coming up next with a smug look in her face and this little crooked smile. Trump! And what he thinks now, his chances are of getting into heaven. I'm like, oh my god. See, here we go. There we go. There's that's it again, proof right there. Like you've got to be getting it. Wow. So we're going to do another train trestle. Dodgers and the Brewers. National Championship Series. Seattle and Toronto ALCS. Toronto won last night. Go Dodgers!
unknown:Your buddy!
