Ep. 368 Today's Peep Explains A Learned Lesson from a 1978 Columbo Episode, Cue Marks, Triptofan and Offbeat Christmas Tunes, Plus A Great Song From A Great Band In Today's Rare Record Spin
Happy post Thanksgiving, my friends. It is the Pat's Peeps Podcast. We're back after a couple of days' respite. It's a rare Saturday podcast for me. Pat's Peeps number 368. November 29, 2025. And today, as I look out my studio windows into the beautiful foothills of Northern California, hoping you're doing well. It is a lovely sunny day where I'm at. But again, I'm up there in the foothills in my mystery hut in the forest, and uh it's foggy down in the lowlands again. So I'm enjoying the sunshine. I do appreciate you listening, and I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving. I hope that uh the meal was great. I was man, just Thanksgiving. It's I love the holiday. You know, you prep all day, you get ready, make that big dinner. Dinner takes like what, 15, 20 minutes, bloom, you're done. On the couch. Trip to fan is real, man. I was like a bump on a log after that. And got so much football that day. So much football. So, anyhow, now we are back. By the way, my name is Pat Walsh. I'm the host of the Pat Walsh Radio Show. KPK News Radio 93.1 FM 1530 a.m. Streaming live on a free iHeart app. Don't forget to support your local businesses. Alright. We're all about here. Today I've got a record for my local record bin here. Oh, rare record shelves. Hold one up today. I like this song. You know, because it is the day after Thanksgiving, or a couple days after Thanksgiving, and uh we can we can now start Christmas. Celebrating Christmas stuff. So coming up, I have some Christmas uh versions of some Christmas songs you may not have heard. But before I get to that, you know, today I was watching a little TV, relaxing this morning with my cup of coffee, and of all things, so random comes on Columbo. Even as a kid, I loved Columbo. I told you before my mom loved Columbo. We always had to watch Columbo, but I liked it. And there was this episode of Columbo. I've been looking for this episode for a long time. It came out February 25th. I just found it. I looked it up because I just found it. It was the one that was on. And I'm like, hey, this is the one I've been looking for for a while. February 25th, 1978. And the episode is called Make Me a Perfect Murder. This episode featured uh Trish Vandeveer in this scene, anyhow, that I'm talking about. This is Trish Vandeveer and uh James McKeachin. And of course Colombo. And this episode, it made me notice something that prior to this was a subliminal message. This features a cue mark in a film, which I had never seen. So when you watch a film, there's always these cue marks, which tells the projection booth, the guy running the projection, when to switch the reels. And during this executive screening of this new and violent TV movie, The Professional, the mastermind here, Kay, takes her place in the projection booth along with Superfly projectionist Walter. Ostensibly to ensure that he doesn't foul things up for her, but really because she wants to murder. Sending Walter off on a low-level errand. Kay has four minutes. And she has a timer. She's on a timer. She has four minutes in which to sneak to Mark's office, slay him, get back to the projection booth, change the wheel, and the delays will blow her cover completely. Any of those would blow her cover. Now, just to set the beginning of that up, TV exec Mark McAndrews gets promoted to head up the CNC Network's East Coast promotions. He has a nasty surprise. This is the nasty surprise. For his brilliant executive assistant and secret lover Kay Freestone, played by Trish Vandevere, as I mentioned. Not only is he not taking her to New York with him, he's also not gonna put her forward to replace him as CNC's West Coast head honcho. In his own patronizing words, I can't give you the West Coast, babe. Why? Because although she's great at what she does, he believes she doesn't make decisions but makes guesses, and it's too biz big of a risk to fill his shoes. Kay wanted the job, so she's mad, she couldn't hide it. A final important and very poor attempt to sweeten the pill. He reveals a peace offering. He's brought Kay the Mercedes that she's had her eye on, had a personalized just for her, the license plate saying Kay number one. He says, Well, that that's a comment from the management. But anyhow, she goes on to this high-risk revenge plan and she murders him during the movie. That's when I realized there were these flashpoints, these cue marks in the movies that I had never noticed before. And now I notice them in every movie I watch. Well, there's a changeover coming in about two minutes.
SPEAKER_04:I'll take care of the changeover. You just get those reels for me, please.
SPEAKER_00:And as you'll hear, she'll be on this timer. She's gotta go murder, commit the murder, then she's gotta be back just in time to switch the projection back. Or the switch the reels. So she goes and shoots him. Honey, wait a minute. Wait a minute. Guy in the office overhears everything. She gets back to the projection booth.
SPEAKER_04:You have two minutes and ten seconds.
SPEAKER_00:She's on her way back, I should say. Mark? Mark's dead. Two minutes. Now what is she gonna do? She's gonna hide the gun. In the elevator, in the roof of the elevator. Is it the elevator? Maybe it's the office. I can't maybe it's the office, excuse me. It's in the office.
SPEAKER_04:You have one minute and 30 seconds. You have 15 seconds.
SPEAKER_00:Back in the projection booth just in time.
SPEAKER_02:Six five four three two.
SPEAKER_00:There's that flash. There's that cue mark. Usually shows up on the upper right portion of the screen. Comes like a little s uh circle or a flash. Here comes the projectionist back in the room. Make the changeover, okay?
SPEAKER_04:Like a chan.
SPEAKER_02:Alright.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah, of course. So now of course, you know Columbo is on to her, right? Because the McAndrews, who was murdered, wore glasses.
SPEAKER_03:I'd say he was 18 feet in by the time he pulled the trip.
SPEAKER_04:Why couldn't a stranger be 18 feet into a room?
SPEAKER_03:Well, let me put it to you this way, ma'am. If you were alone in a room at night, lying on a couch, and a stranger into. Wouldn't you take a good look at it? Wouldn't you want to see what it looked like? Yes. That's the point, ma'am. Mr. McAndrew didn't bother to take a really good look. Miss Freestone.
SPEAKER_00:She made the He didn't take a good look. He didn't bring down his glasses to see who it was, hearing the stranger. It was someone familiar, okay.
SPEAKER_03:Yeah, about two minutes after I left, I checked that counter. You checked the counter, Miss Freestone. She changed the picture.
SPEAKER_00:Ah, then he finds the glove. Oh, if it doesn't if it doesn't fit, you must have quit. It's the glove!
SPEAKER_03:What splice? You mean the film didn't break? Isn't this one of those editor's gloves?
SPEAKER_00:Uh right. I mean, she could have fixed the film if anything happened, but nothing happened to the film.
SPEAKER_03:You see, I use these gloves because of the glue.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah, but he's got her. He always knows. It's Walter's glove.
SPEAKER_04:Walter's projection does. I don't think you have a case against Walter.
SPEAKER_03:No, ma'am, not the way he kept that boot so immaculate, no. I don't see him just throwing a glove on the floor. And the lamp says that this glove has powder bronze on it. And then there's the gun. Mr. McAndrew's gun. The gun that murdered him. The one that you put on the elevator. Our people found at the second. And then we took a second gun. One that looked like this gun. And we put it back on the elevator. But it where it could be seen. As if the continuous had jiggled it, so now it became visible. Watch this. That's a TV picture of where we placed the second gun. Just before you got on the elevator with me. Now there. That's the way it looked. Right after you got back on the elevator and came off. And you'll notice. Not anymore.
SPEAKER_00:He got her. I'll leave it at that. The whole point being is ever since I saw that episode, I could never unsee those little flashes. It could be a blotch, it could be a flash, it could be of some kind. It's like a circle. I was so surprised that I saw that. Now maybe you'll see them. You watch a movie, you go to the drive, you I mean the drive-in, you go to the drive-in too, but you go to the theater and you're gonna see those flashes. Columbo was always on top of his game. I just wanted to bring that, I just wanted to mention that because I've been looking at looking for that for so long. I mentioned that, hey, it's Christmas. You know, it's time to celebrate Christmas. So on another note, I thought, you know, here's some um Christmas, some versions of pretty popular Christmas music that you may not have heard. I usually seek seek out the Christmas music that you never hear that that's just forgotten about. But these are some of the more famous Christmas songs, but perhaps you've never heard them in this way. This is from the album Indian Christmas Party Mix. So let's listen. This is by Vindalu Singh. Let's listen to Slay Ride here on Pat's Peeps 368. Get you cheered up for Christmas.
SPEAKER_01:Come on, it's lovely weather for a slay ride together with a jewel. That's gonna get you in the mood, that's a big-alaga. Nice and rosy and comfy and cozy are wee.

SPEAKER_00:Oh, that's still Felice Navidad.

SPEAKER_00:I got Felicia. Yes, gotcha. Here's one.
SPEAKER_01:I just want you for my own more than you could ever.

SPEAKER_00:Let's see what else we have here.
SPEAKER_01:Who will get a sentimental feeling?
SPEAKER_00:When you hear all your favorite Christmas hits singing on the Indian Christmas party mix.
SPEAKER_01:The halls with bows of horror.
SPEAKER_00:Pat's peebs 368. Hello.
SPEAKER_01:Everyone dancing merrily in the new old-fashioned way.
SPEAKER_00:That's right, my friends.
SPEAKER_01:It's more of the other reindeer. Used to laugh and call him names. They never let poor Rudolphy play any reindeer games. And one foggy Chris Massa Eve Santa came to Can't wait for this show, by the way.
SPEAKER_00:I always look forward to Rudolph.
SPEAKER_01:With your nose so bright, won't you guide my slee to?
SPEAKER_00:That's right.
SPEAKER_01:Love friends are near. It is the most time.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah, this is you know the all of the classics on there.
SPEAKER_01:Even Carol of the Bells, how are they how they sound sweet silver bells? All seem to say through kills away, Christmas is here, bringing good year to young and old meat and the ball ding dong ding dong.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah, I'm in the mood. Is this a holly jolly?
SPEAKER_01:Friends you know, and everyone you meet.
SPEAKER_02:Uh-huh.
SPEAKER_01:Oh yeah. I don't know if there'll be snow, but have a cup of cheer. Yes. Is the wish of Barney and Man. Dolly's the top and we'll go for a walk is the hope of Janice and Jan. And mom and dad can hardly wait for school to start again.
SPEAKER_00:Yes. Everything you want in Christmas music is right here for your family for 2025.
SPEAKER_01:Just remember you heard it right here on Pat's Peeps number 300 and Here comes Santa Claus, here comes Santa Claus, right down Santa Claus line Wipson and Blitzin, and all his rain. They're not bullying on the rings. Bells are ringing, children are singing, all is merry and bright. So hang your stockings and say your press cause Santa Claus comes tonight. Oh that fine it is to rain in a one hole, so pennis.
SPEAKER_00:I pulled a record from my record shells today. It's got two records in it. I love this song. Bolt in perfect mint condition on United Artists record label. The only thing on the records is a stamp from the radio station or the record company, and it just says November 1974. White record white label on one side, which is mono, not for sale, promo not for sale. The other side is yellow. November 1974 stamp on that one, too. So two records. So they thought this was gonna be a hit. I do love it. I don't know if it's a huge hit. One side, the white side is mono, the yellow side is stereo. I don't know, you know, this was kind of more of an FM song, I think, than an AM song, but it's one that I really always did like. Always liked this band. Let's see, released on the band's fourth album. You'll know right away if you're a fan of the band, you know it immediately when I tell you the album and who wrote it. But it's on the album El Dorado Overture. Elder I mean El Dorado, excuse me. September 74. It's the second track on the album that follows El Dorado Overture. Released November of the same year as a single. So right there, November, just like the stamp. Became the band's first top ten single. I guess it was big on the AM. I it went to number nine. I don't know why I remember it more on FM, but okay, it went to number nine. Let's see. Help boost the uh public awareness of this band in the United States. Okay, see uh the the single on the LP failed to chart in the UK. In 78, it was included as the lead song on the four-track EP UK release, when it went to number 34 on the UK charts. It's appeared on a lot of the compilation albums for this band. The artist, the uh person who wrote it, wrote it uh partially in response to his father's criticism that the previous songs that he wrote didn't have any tune. Wanted to show that he could write a song with a beautiful metal melody. Stated that the lyrics are about a man who is dreaming, sees the vision of loveliness, wakes up, finds that he's actually a clerk working in a bank, and so he will not be able to act on his own, on his dream. So this is written by Jeff Lynn. Jeff Lynn, of course, is the founding member and lead of the Electric Light Orchestra, and this is a great song called Can't Get It Out of My Head on Pat Speeps, 368. Always reminded me of the Wizard of Oz, the whole El Dorado album did. The ocean's dark, beautiful strings, beautiful cello, beautiful drums. I love this right here. Michael D'Albuquerque on bass, Bev Bevan on drums.
SPEAKER_02:Michael Edwards on cello Mick Kaminsky on violin, Hugh McDowell on cello.
SPEAKER_00:Lewis Clark, Orchestra conducting. Thank you for listening to Pat's Peeps 368. I hope you have a beautiful rest of your weekend. Go get your free two for one dinner at Rock and Soul Diner. Go to PatSPeeps.com, please. Please. Have a beautiful weekend. See you on the radio.
