Ep. 386 Today's Peep Is On The Move As We Recount the NFL's Divisional Round Playoffs, Oh... We Picked ALL Winners for the Weekend, Then We Crank Up the "Dancing Machine"

Pat Walsh

A kickoff return that felt like a punch, a last-second heave that froze a sideline, and an injury that flipped the AFC’s script—this divisional weekend had everything. We unpack why some teams advanced on discipline and depth while others tripped on turnovers, and why the Rams-Seahawks rubber match in Seattle carries more than bragging rights. From special teams gaffes getting cleaned up to a ground game built for noise and rain, we dig into what actually wins in January: situational mastery, ball security, and the ability to settle a stadium with a methodical drive.

On the AFC side, Denver’s top-seed trajectory collided with harsh reality, leaving a defense-first path against a New England team thriving on precision. Houston’s defense looked the part, but giveaways fed momentum the other way—proof that playoff football punishes impatience. We also talk about Buffalo’s recurring heartbreak, where “almost” keeps knocking without a ring to show for it.

Threaded through it all is a plea for patience with young quarterbacks. Development isn’t a headline; it’s a grind of reps, reads, and resilience. The difference between forcing a throw and anticipating a window often comes down to time on task and a coach willing to let growth breathe. We also get candid on late-game play calling in the cold: when to trust a hot runner, when to take the air out of the ball, and when field conditions make a “chip shot” anything but.

Then we drop the needle on a 1974 promo 45 and let Jackson 5’s Dancing Machine remind us what rhythm, repetition, and timing look like when they click. The robot’s rise from garages to Soul Train mirrors the quarterback’s journey from raw to refined—practice until the hard stuff looks easy. Hit play to ride from film room to record room, and walk away with clear takeaways for championship weekend.

If you enjoyed this, follow the show, share it with a friend, and leave a quick review—who’s your pick to reach the Super Bowl and why?

Hi, my name is Ray, and on yesterday my daughter called me uh because she was stressed out because of uh things that were going on on her job that she felt were quite unfair. Being quite disturbed, she called for comfort, and I didn't really know what to tell her because we have to deal with so much mess in our society. So I was led to write this song just for her, uh to just give her some encouragement while dealing with stress and pressures on her job, and I figured I'd put it on the internet for all employees under stress to help you better deal with what you're going through on your job. Here's how the song goes. I'm about to whip somebody's ass. Oh, I'm about to whip somebody's ass. Oh, if you don't leave me alone, you're gonna have to send me home because I'm about to whip somebody's ass. Now you might not be able to sing that out loud, but you can hum it to yourself and you know what the words are, and let it give you some strength to get through the next few moments on your job. All right? Stay strong. Peace.

SPEAKER_02:

Hey now, Pats Peter 384. And today it's the Monday. I believe this is January 19th. January 19th, 2026. Good Monday to you. Thank you for tuning in. And uh it is I'm out walking today, so I'm not sitting in my studio looking out the window, but I'll tell you this, it is an absolutely spectacular morning here in the beautiful foothills of Northern California. I'll bet you it's 70 degrees at least, uh, perhaps even higher than that. But I'm out here taking advantage of that sunshine and trying to get some workouts in. You know, I've been really trying to eat right, set the precedent for a good new year in terms of health. When I go in to see my doctor, I want to have a good checkup again. Actually, an even better checkup. So that's where we're at. That's where we're doing. Whatever you're doing here on this Monday. Uh thank you for tuning in, and I hope everything is good in your world. Now, of course, the one thing I'm gonna start off with is the NFL divisional round playoffs. And let me just say this real quick. Go Rams! I'm gonna have to do a tunnel shout-out to the Rams, train trestle shout out. But hey, what a weekend of football it was in the divisional round. It's down to four teams remaining. And I am gonna start with my Rams because SIM bias and they've earned it. Rams in the NFC headed to Seattle, taking on the Seahawks. They played each other twice, of course, during a regular season, splitting the two games. In the other matchup, you have one versus two, you have the Denver Broncos with devastating news, a big win over the weekend, but along with that, good news, really bad news for Denver, as they lose Bo Nicks, their quarterback, apparently for the season. That's brutal. Guy was having a sensational year, and here you have the number one seed, and now you have the Patriots behind Drake May, this young quarterback who is being considered at least he will not win it because Matthew Stafford will, the MVP of the NFL for this past season. So that's gonna be a tough, tough challenge. I I said on my radio show, by the way, I'm Pat Walsh, host of the Pat Walsh radio show on the Pat Walsh show, not the Pat Walsh radio show, but it is a radio show. But the Pat Walsh show, KPK News Radio, 93.1 FM, 1530 a.m. And by the way, I don't mean to brag, but I'm going to look at all the prognosticators on television. They all knew what they were talking about. Guess who picked all four games correctly this weekend? That's right. Yours truly picked all four on the air. And am I gonna brag? Yup! I so am. You know, three home teams and a road team is what I picked. Oh no, no, no, no. I take that back. No, no, no. I take that back because I picked it, I picked, no, because Seattle played at home, so I take that back. Seattle, I picked to beat the 49ers. I picked Denver to beat the Patriots because, as I said, I mean to beat the uh Bills. Gosh, I now I just can't get my thoughts together straight because I have cars driving right next to me. Um, but I picked the um Broncos to win their game at home against the Bills, which they did, because I don't think the Bills' defense has been that great this season. And here comes Denver, their defense has been good, and I think the only X factor could have been maybe Josh Allen. Um, and that just wasn't enough because it takes more than Josh Allen to win games. So they move on. Okay, I got a truck coming in. I'm still gonna do a train trestle shout out. Go Rams! Yeah, baby. Hey now, in the train trestle with big work vehicles, yeah. Go Rams. Denver won that game, but the bad news again, they lose bone nix. The other game in the AFC. Yeah, my uh the Texans, just like I said on my show, yep, the Texans have a good defense, one of the best defenses in the NFL. Alright? However, I as I said, I don't I don't think they have a great offense, and that is precisely how it turned out yesterday. They do not and did not have a great offense. Lots of turnovers by CJ Stroud, and that really cost them the game no matter how their defense played. New England took advantage of that behind Drake May, and they win the game. Uh so I picked that one. Then yesterday's action in the early game. Well, you had oh now I hear the train coming behind me. Well, I guess that was the early game yesterday. I guess that was the Patriots and the Texans. You have the Seattle Seahawks. This is the other game against the 49ers, and I picked Seattle even though it's been a an incredible year for San Francisco. When you look at all the injuries they've had, it's too bad when either team is injured. But I will say this you know, the 49ers did go a long way, despite those injuries, so they're to be congratulated. Jared Stenham will be the quarterback for the Broncos. And everyone says, Well, God, look at Seattle. I mean, good job. Credit where credit is due. They played phenomenal. Well, they they did look good. Well, they did that against an extremely depleted 49er team. Let's keep in mind the last time the Rams and the Seahawks played, the Seahawks won the game on an extremely controversial call. Or actually, non-call. If you remember, the Rams are up big, Seahawks trying to come back. Went for the two-point conversion. The play was basically called dead. Rams broke it up. One of the Hawks players picked the ball up nonchalant, didn't even realize it himself. When he picked it up, somehow that was two points because they said the pass was lateral. But once the play is dead, it's dead. So, and then they got another two-point conversion. That's extremely rare. It reminds me of going back to when the Rams played the Eagles earlier this year, and the Rams were leading that game, they would have won pretty subs substantially, ended up losing based on the fact that the Eagles blocked not one, but two field goal attempts, which cost our field goal kicker at that time his job. Not to mention Chase Blackburn, our special teams coordinator, cost him his job. I mean, it's so rare to block a field goal attempt, let alone two field goal attempts. Like last week against Carolina, a block punt. That doesn't happen all that often. So they've kind of rectified that situation. Harrison Mevis comes in, uh kicks the game winning field goal for the Rams. So now they are on to play Sam Darnold and the Seattle Seahawks in Seattle. And let us not forget that the last time the Rams played the Seahawks in Seattle, the Rams were without Devontae Adams, and yet they managed to put 581 yards up on the Seahawks. So I expect, particularly after coming off another road win in the cold, in the snow, in the elements, that um whatever the weather's like in Seattle. Rain could be nice. I don't really know what the weather forecast is gonna be like. But uh I think the Rams will be ready to go. Plus, I saw a lot of chest thumping after that last narrow 38-37 victory in overtime. But you know, credit where credit is due, Seattle's a good team. I'm just glad to see him again in the playoffs. In Seattle, even. And think about it. At this point, now that the Rams and the Seahawks have moved out and the 49ers have been eliminated, if the NFC were to win the Super Bowl, if, it's a big if, I understand that, but if they did, one of the NFC West foes, either the Rams or the Seahawks, would win the Super Bowl on the 49ers field at Levi Stadium. That's huge. I can assure you that's what every 49er fan was dreading. It's what every Ram and Seahawk fan was hoping for. The chance to lift the Lombardi trophy at Levi Stadium. And now here we are. We're a game away from one of those teams advancing to the Super Bowl. Tough break for the Denver Broncos, man. Losing boneks. Wow. So they're gonna have their hands full taking on those New England Patriots in the AFC Championship game. I have a lot of friends who are Bears fans. My brother Steve is a Bears fan. Sorry, Steven. Georgia, I know you're out there. I shout out to Georgia every once in a while on the podcast. She's a sweetie. She's a Bears fan. Great game, you guys. I mean, you gotta be kidding me. Fourth down and four. Only seconds left in the game. 20-some seconds, whatever it was. Fourth down and four. The Rams come with a steam rolling pass rush on Caleb Williams. They chased a guy clear back like 25 yards or whatever it was. He just unleashes the like out of desperation over their heads, just unleashes a throw to the end zone, and a guy catches it. Like, what? Sean McVay looked frozen on the sidelines, as I'm sure I did. I could not believe it. I'm sure most people watching that game simply could not believe that that just happened. But again, like a champion, you know, you gotta keep playing, you gotta keep going. And the Rams did just that. And they came out with a victory. And I'm very proud of them. Extremely proud. To all of you, you know, if you're still in the in the hunt for the Super Bowl, good luck to you. If your team has been phased out or eliminated, I should say. Uh better luck to you next year, the Bears, you know. Shoot. That was a dramatic turnaround after one year. Ben Johnson goes from the Lions, who were hard to beat prior to this year. They didn't finish well this year. And Ben Johnson goes to Chicago where he leads to the Bears to the divisional round of the playoffs. So what does that say? That obviously you've got a good coach and you've got a good quarterback. It's also why you shouldn't give up on a quarterback God after a year or so. People, oh, is Caleb Williams a bust? Oh my gosh, he just doesn't seem to have it. Give him a chance. It takes a while to evolve into an NFL quarterback. I firmly believe that. You know, repetition, repetition, seeing the field over and over and over, allowing your coach to give you that opportunity to see the field over and over, not to yank you out of the game because they think you're a bust. No. And if you look at Matthew Stafford, look how well he's playing. It's because he's seen everything over the years. He's been out there, he knows how it goes, he knows how to read defenses. It takes a while in this game or in any other game. But as a quarterback at the NFL, it's particularly tough. So you had to be patient with these young guys, you have to give them time. I mean, there's a lot of, I could give you a litany of quarterbacks. Cam Ward's gonna be one of them. Give him time. Don't give up on this guy. And you're gonna see, I think, that some of these guys are gonna turn out to be pretty good quarterbacks. You have to develop them, though. But hey, congratulations to the Bears. Congratulations to everyone who won this weekend. I understand it's gonna be a tough game there in Seattle against the Hawks, but I think the Rams are built for it. I'm sure that the Seahawks feel the same way. They'll have their crowd behind them. There's no better way to silence the so-called 12th man they want to call themselves than to go up big. Again, I believe with Devontae Adams in the lineup, which he was not when they put up 581 on them last time, I believe that's gonna add a big, big dimension. And let's not forget the running game because Kyron Williams yesterday was outstanding. Outstanding. Now, I will say this, I wasn't quite sure about a couple of play calls by the coach, by Coach McVeigh, who I love. There was one point he was throwing the ball near the goal line when they should have been running the ball, still choking on that one, running the ball and killing the clock. But he kept throwing it. And even towards the end of the game, you don't need the walk-off touchdown. Are you afraid of Harrison Mevis? I don't know that it was really that, to be honest. I think perhaps he was at first I was questioning why are you throwing it? And I still kind of do, because Meavis has only missed one this entire year. However, given the conditions in Chicago, given the fact that that that was that was frozen tundra, 42-yard field goal. It could have, you know, hey, if you don't get those receptions, you're still at 42 yards. If you hand the ball off, maybe you're at the way the running game was going, they weren't stopping it. Maybe you're at, I don't know, 38, 35 yards if you run the ball a couple of more times. And not to mention you're killing the clock, which that didn't really matter anyhow, because it was next one who scores wins. But when you're throwing it in the air, there's also that possibility of a pick, of a turnover, of a sack. So that was interesting to see the way the game ended and the play calling. The 49ers, unfortunately, it was over, it seemed from the opening kickoff when Seattle returned it for a touchdown on the opening play. That's always brutal, and that really that's a gut punch for sure. The Patriots look good. CJ Stroud needs to work on his game there with Houston. He was better a couple of years ago. I'm not sure why he's regressed a little bit, but he was really having a tough time yesterday. And as far as the Buffalo Bills are concerned, wow, that's brutal being a bear a Bills fan. So close and yet always so far away. Seemingly. Whether it's the AFC championship game, whether it's the divisional round, and of course, we all know about the four Super Bowls in a row. That's brutal. It's like the Vikings. They're the Vikings, the Minnesota Vikings of the AFC. We got the next weekend coming up. May the best team win. Two games. Good luck to Denver. It's gonna be tough for them. But we'll see how that works out. They are the top seed in the AFC. Anyhow, I'm done with my run. Back to the turn table where I can pull an old Tom rare record off my 45 shelf as we continue on Pat's Peeps 386. As we continue on Pat's Papes 386, pulled a record on my rare record shelf. I thought I'd share that with you as I always do. This was from 1974. This is a promotional copy. It says promotional notes for sale. It's a very, very clean label with only one stamp, like a stamp that hit it that said March of 74. And I pull it out of the sleeve. It's beautiful. All these records are just beautiful, in beautiful shape. It's not Motown. It's like a light off-white color. One's mono, one side is mono, uh, the other side is stereo. And I remember being in junior high. I played this song all the time. You'd go to the junior high dance at James Ruther Junior High, and you'd bump to this song. Remember the bump. The bump was a big dance back in our day, the bump. Be wearing your two-tone platforms, bell bottoms, you're doing a bump. Recorded by this American RB group. Very popular group. Title track of their ninth studio album recorded for the group's 1973 album. There you go. Get it. Or get it together. G-I-T. Song reportedly sold over three million copies, popularized the physically complicated robot dance technique, which was still maybe my favorite dance of all time. I love watching the robot. My friend Mark Barnett and I, we would practice the robot in his garage, and we could literally go to a junior high dance and do the robot. Same thing in high school, at Oak Grove High School. We were the only people in Oak Grove could do the robot because we loved it, so we practiced it. I can still kind of do it. That dance, by the way, was devised by Charles Washington in the late 60s. And the soon-to-be solo artist from this group first performed the dance on television while singing this song with this group on a Bob Hope special that aired September 26, 1973. But the cameram cut away from the guy doing the dance as he did the dance. He cut away. Why would you do that? A month later, on an episode of Soul Train. Love that show. 27th of October of 73. This artist from this group did the robot again. And this time it was fully caught on camera. It was the group's first top 10 hit since 1971, Sugar Daddy. And the song brought this group their second Grammy Award nomination in '75 for the best RB performance by a duo or group with vocals. They lost to Rufus. Tell me something good. Remember that? Rufus and Chaka Khan? I remember that one really. Tell me, tell me, tell me. That might have been the first time I ever heard any semblance of like a voice box. Tell me something good. Remember that? Tell me, tell me, tell me. This song went to number two in Canada, number two on a US Hot 100 billboard, and number one on the Billboard Hot Soul Singles chart. And I like this group before the solo artists. I like them probably more than when the solo artists came out and emerged from this band. This would be the Jackson 5 dancing machine. Pat's peeps 386.
