always like to watch what's going on in the what I call many people many people call the public square, the arena, the the world. 00:00:26.320 --> 00:00:57.920 And a lot of times uh news uh agencies or newscasts will have on the Christian view by a pastor who's written a book or something, and then so they they get up, and a lot of times I was burdened because this pastor or whoever they had on the panel would just be very aggressive and angry, and they might win the argument, but they lost people because of their posture, because it was like, this is what we do, you're wrong, you're wrong, you're wrong. 00:00:58.000 --> 00:01:03.200 And I was burdened because it was like we have beautiful truth. 00:01:03.759 --> 00:01:10.079 We have logic, God is the God of logic, we have all of these things, but what do we do with our posture? 00:01:10.239 --> 00:01:18.239 And I'd read books about how we could be presenting ourselves in the world because we have convictions and we want people to know those convictions. 00:01:18.879 --> 00:01:20.799 And so it was just perplexing. 00:01:20.879 --> 00:01:27.519 And so you read sometimes what you need to be, and then you see other people not doing it, and you're just it's confusing. 00:01:27.840 --> 00:01:35.359 But then I saw Tim Keller, who's one of our a lot of our guys' uh spiritual grandfathers in the faith. 00:01:35.599 --> 00:01:39.359 He wrote a book called Reason for God, which is an apologetics book. 00:01:39.680 --> 00:01:42.000 He passed away a few years ago from cancer. 00:01:42.159 --> 00:01:48.560 But he started a church in New York City and just did amazing things by God's grace. 00:01:48.879 --> 00:01:55.439 And when he put out Reason for God, he took invitations to a lot of different places to speak. 00:01:55.519 --> 00:01:58.640 And one of the places he went to speak was at Google. 00:01:58.799 --> 00:02:03.680 And so they had Google employees, and it's not a Christian environment, if you know Google. 00:02:04.000 --> 00:02:08.400 But he went in and he just stood and shared. 00:02:08.879 --> 00:02:13.120 And he knew that his audience, most of them were not believers. 00:02:13.280 --> 00:02:23.520 He was thoughtful without being defensive. 00:02:24.240 --> 00:02:27.280 He was convictional without being combative. 00:02:27.759 --> 00:02:30.879 He was humble without compromising. 00:02:31.439 --> 00:02:36.080 He was filled with kindness, love, and strength. 00:02:36.400 --> 00:02:41.759 He took questions and he appreciated the dignity of the person asking the question. 00:02:41.840 --> 00:02:44.000 He didn't seek to shame anyone. 00:02:44.240 --> 00:02:50.960 He just was there and he was, this is what I believe, and this is what I see as the truth, and this is what I give my life for. 00:02:52.000 --> 00:03:02.560 And a lot of times in the Christian life, until we see a picture of someone embodying what we're actually called to do, it's really hard to even see how we're supposed to be functioning. 00:03:02.800 --> 00:03:16.560 And the reason I tell you this intro is because we get to a point in Philippians, as we've been several weeks, in Philippians, we get to a point that if you look at it at face value, you might be saying, why is Paul starting to talk about Timothy and Epaphroditus? 00:03:16.879 --> 00:03:19.120 Is he just talking about travel plans? 00:03:19.360 --> 00:03:20.639 Well, he's not. 00:03:20.879 --> 00:03:23.759 And let's look at the flow again before we read our passage. 00:03:24.159 --> 00:03:28.400 In our first sermon, we looked at verses 1 through 11 of chapter 1. 00:03:28.479 --> 00:03:30.000 We saw God is at work. 00:03:30.319 --> 00:03:35.599 And then we looked at verses 12 through 18 that the story is bigger than our circumstances. 00:03:35.840 --> 00:03:38.479 Our circumstances are going to change all through our lives. 00:03:38.560 --> 00:03:47.120 They can be good, they can be hard, they can be awful, but God is the same, and the story is bigger than our circumstances. 00:03:47.759 --> 00:03:54.479 Then we hit chapter 2, and Paul says, here's what Christian community looks like with Christ at the center. 00:03:54.639 --> 00:04:02.240 And then we get this amazing passage where it's this Christ helm, and it's like, behold Christ, look at Jesus. 00:04:02.960 --> 00:04:08.159 In what he did, he poured out all that he had for us. 00:04:08.560 --> 00:04:16.079 He didn't grasp onto his right as creator, but came and emptied himself as a babe. 00:04:16.240 --> 00:04:21.120 And I wrote that poem, looking at how amazing he is, all these things I've been telling you to do, and what matters the most. 00:05:10.240 --> 00:05:12.000 Look at these examples. 00:05:12.240 --> 00:05:14.160 Look at Timothy, my friend. 00:05:14.399 --> 00:05:16.079 Look at Epaphroditus. 00:05:16.959 --> 00:05:27.839 And in this passage, I love it because it's filled with just glowing recommendations for these guys, but I want you to look at what Paul sees as important. 00:05:28.800 --> 00:05:37.920 But I also want you to see the emotional state of Paul because it goes up and down too, because he's filled with all sorts of different things and he's very human, just like you and me. 00:05:38.720 --> 00:05:43.439 So with that in mind, I'd invite you to stand for the reading of God's Word if you wish. to you soon, so that I too may be encouraged by news about you. 00:06:04.639 --> 00:06:09.600 For I have no one else like-minded who will genuinely care about your interests. 00:06:09.920 --> 00:06:13.519 All seek their own interests, not those of Jesus Christ. 00:06:13.839 --> 00:06:20.879 But you know his proven character because he has served with me in the gospel ministry like a 00:07:32.720 --> 00:07:33.920 You may be seated. 00:07:37.920 --> 00:07:40.399 Well, in today's passage, just what I want to do. 00:07:40.480 --> 00:07:56.399 I want to stay rooted in looking at what Paul says about Timothy, and then looking at what Paul says about Epaphroditus, and looking at these lives, because we want to continue, like we say each week, is to find ourselves in the story. 00:07:56.959 --> 00:08:04.560 These are human people, human lives with hurts, longings, desires, dreams, hopes, just like you, just like me. 00:08:05.040 --> 00:08:10.000 And so the first point, what I want to look at is the gift of faithful friendships. 00:08:10.639 --> 00:08:16.639 So we just read in verses 19 through 24 that Paul has deep affection for Timothy. 00:08:16.879 --> 00:08:23.439 And there's a lot of places that Timothy's mentioned, so let's just think about Timothy's life at this juncture. 00:08:23.759 --> 00:08:32.480 At the point Paul is writing Philippians, Paul has known Timothy for more than a decade, 12, 15 years, maybe around in that time. 00:08:32.879 --> 00:08:38.000 So if you go all the way back to Acts 16, Paul meets Timothy. 00:08:38.240 --> 00:08:40.480 He's a young believer from Lystra. 00:08:40.879 --> 00:08:52.320 We know from looking at Acts and looking at the letters Paul writes that Timothy's mother is Eunice and his grandmother Lois had faithfully taught him the scriptures from childhood. 00:08:52.720 --> 00:08:57.600 And so this is cool because you get to see the generational influence of Timothy. 00:08:57.679 --> 00:09:03.200 And we never know what we're doing or how many seeds we're planting when we're planting seeds in our kids. 00:09:03.279 --> 00:09:12.720 And when we think about VBS coming up, that we don't know how important just telling the gospel story is for kids and what God may do in and through that. 00:09:13.120 --> 00:09:20.559 And so that's why we continue to share, because sometimes things seemingly lie dormant, but then they bloom. 00:09:20.720 --> 00:09:22.480 And we we want to continue to do this. 00:09:22.559 --> 00:09:27.519 But Timothy had been invested in so dearly by his grandmother and mother. 00:09:27.679 --> 00:09:29.600 They had a love for the scriptures. 00:09:30.320 --> 00:09:32.159 His father was Greek. 00:09:32.559 --> 00:09:41.200 Paul sees something in this young man, not perfection, but he sees teachabilities led by the Lord to engage Timothy in relationship. 00:09:41.519 --> 00:09:42.480 So what does he do? 00:09:42.559 --> 00:09:44.639 He invites Timothy into his life. 00:09:44.879 --> 00:09:51.279 Not to a classroom, but to his life to do life together, and so he takes him on journeys with him. 00:09:52.080 --> 00:09:55.679 Listen to what Paul says throughout the New Testament about Timothy. 00:09:55.919 --> 00:10:06.080 As Timothy's form through relationship with Paul and with other Christians and through walking through just the trials, the ups and downs of life. 00:10:06.720 --> 00:10:12.159 To the Corinthian church, Paul says this about Timothy, my beloved and faithful child in the Lord. 00:10:12.399 --> 00:10:16.399 To the Philippians, we've already seen, I have no one else like him. 00:10:17.120 --> 00:10:22.879 To Timothy himself, in his letters, he says, My true child in the faith. 00:10:24.080 --> 00:10:26.960 So this is, once again, what is Paul? 00:10:28.080 --> 00:10:35.120 I love looking at the prayers in Ephesians, Ephesians 1, 3 and Colossians, and you look at Paul's priority in prayer. 00:10:35.279 --> 00:10:40.000 We could say it like this: what's Paul's priority in saying, this is what you should honor? 00:10:40.720 --> 00:10:48.320 You can look at it with the qualifications for an elder, for deacons, because it says these are character qualifications. 00:10:48.639 --> 00:10:50.240 They're about the person's character. 00:10:50.320 --> 00:10:51.600 It's not about the gifting. 00:10:51.679 --> 00:10:52.639 Giftings are great. 00:10:52.799 --> 00:10:53.679 We all have gifts. 00:10:53.840 --> 00:10:55.200 God gives us gifts. 00:10:55.440 --> 00:10:57.919 But the character is what matters most. 00:11:00.559 --> 00:11:11.200 So when we think about all that Paul's written in Philippians 1 and 2, and here he gets to Timothy, let's see how Timothy embodies what Paul's been talking about. 00:11:11.919 --> 00:11:16.159 Back in verses 3 and 4, Paul says, Do nothing out of selfish ambition. 00:11:16.639 --> 00:11:19.039 And then what's he say about Timothy? 00:11:19.679 --> 00:11:23.279 He says, Everyone else looks out for their own interest. 00:11:25.600 --> 00:11:27.440 Not the interest of Christ. 00:11:27.840 --> 00:11:29.360 But Timothy does. 00:11:29.679 --> 00:11:32.159 Look out for others' interests. 00:11:32.399 --> 00:11:35.679 He says, you know Timothy's proven character. 00:11:36.000 --> 00:11:37.919 He had just said, work out your salvation. 00:11:38.240 --> 00:11:39.840 What is Timothy doing? 00:11:40.000 --> 00:11:42.559 He's working out what God has worked in. 00:11:44.879 --> 00:11:48.799 And notice again, I want to hit the drum again, again. 00:11:48.960 --> 00:11:52.240 What Paul praises, and this stands out to me continually. 00:11:52.399 --> 00:11:59.840 He doesn't praise Timothy's preaching ability or his leadership or his intelligence or his giftedness or his education. 00:12:00.000 --> 00:12:02.720 All of those things were true. 00:12:04.559 --> 00:12:09.759 But he says, Timothy genuinely cares about your interests. 00:12:10.000 --> 00:12:12.480 That's what he honors in Timothy. 00:12:13.840 --> 00:12:25.840 And one of the greatest compliments you can give me, I received it this week when I was just visiting with someone who's walking through struggles with their family, and they simply said, Thank you for caring. 00:12:26.799 --> 00:12:28.799 And I said, Man, praise God. 00:12:31.440 --> 00:12:42.240 What if we walked around as a people and they looked at us, the world, and they didn't say, Man, they have brilliant intellect. 00:12:42.399 --> 00:12:44.159 Some of you are very smart. 00:12:45.679 --> 00:12:49.120 Or look at all the things they're able to plan and do these things. 00:12:49.279 --> 00:12:52.000 What if those weren't the primary things that people saw first? 00:12:52.080 --> 00:12:54.960 What if people came and 00:14:22.240 --> 00:14:28.320 If you read 1 and 2 Timothy, these are the last letters that Paul writes before going off to be martyred. 00:14:28.559 --> 00:14:31.440 As he writes, he says, this to Timothy. 00:14:31.519 --> 00:14:34.559 He says, Don't let anyone despise your youth. 00:14:35.200 --> 00:14:39.120 He says, God has not given us a spirit of fear, Timothy. 00:14:39.279 --> 00:14:41.519 He says, Fulfill your ministry, Timothy. 00:14:41.600 --> 00:14:42.320 Fight the good fight. 00:14:42.480 --> 00:14:46.000 Another place he says, don't forget the gifts you've been given. much about Epaphroditus outside of Philippians. 00:17:43.839 --> 00:17:48.000 He isn't mentioned in Acts, he doesn't appear in Paul's other writings. 00:17:48.160 --> 00:17:53.279 Yet for this brief moment, Paul lets us see who this man was. 00:17:54.559 --> 00:17:57.839 And look at his descriptors again in the text you got before you. 00:17:58.000 --> 00:18:01.839 He says, My brother, this is family language. 00:18:02.319 --> 00:18:10.640 He says, My co-worker, they're not just simply friends, they're working together, and that's how we grow together by even serving together at VBS. 00:18:10.799 --> 00:18:12.480 That we grow together. 00:18:12.720 --> 00:18:20.319 By being together out here on the Friday night for Family Fun night, as we serve together, as we hand out hot dogs,
