It's time to open the Captain's Book of Historical Facts to see what happened on this day in history. And on this 4th of July, of course, we start in 1776. The Declaration of Independence, adopted this day by the Second Continental Congress, called for the American colonies to secede from Great Britain. A proclamation now commemorated as Independence Day. 1802, on this day, the United States Military Academy opened in West Point, New York. 1826, Thomas Jefferson and John Adams both died, former presidents, 50 years to the day after the adoption of the Declaration of Independence. Jefferson was 83, Adams was 90. 1884, the completed Statue of Liberty was presented by the French government to United States Ambassador France Levy P. Morton in Paris. And it was on this day in 1939 that Lou Gehrig retired from Major League Baseball.

Today, I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth. And I might have been given a bad break, but I've got an awful lot to live for.
