It's time to open the Captain's Book of Historical Facts to see what happened on this day in history. And we start in the year 1865. It was on this day that William Booth founded the Salvation Army in London. On that same day, the United States Secret Service began operation under the Treasury Department to aid in the prevention of counterfeiting. 1916. Adelina and August Van Buren started on the first successful transcontinental motorcycle tour to be attempted by two women. They started in New York City, arrived in San Diego 69 days later, 1946. The first bikini designed by French engineer. Louis Riart made its debut in Paris. The swimsuit was named for the bikini atoll, which just days earlier had been the site of the world's first peacetime atomic weapons test. Oh my goodness! Another one! I hear it! Ugh! And on this day! Okay. On this day in 1996, Dolly, a female sheep, was born near Edinburgh, becoming the first successfully cloned mammal. She is named after Dolly Parton. Why? Because the scientists thought the country star was the first and most synonymous with mammary glands. I'm not kidding. Alright, that is this day in history for the 5th of July. After the break, more of the greatest hits of all time. Keep it locked in. Captain Crush. And now for you podcasters, how about some birthdays?
