Alright, everyone. Welcome back to another episode of Random Rentals. Um, the podcast where me and my brother watch random movies that people recommend or we recommend to each other and then we talk about them. Today we are joined by a sp Hold up.
SPEAKER_01We should we should redo this intro because we this is a special fucking episode, all right? Because we have a special guest.
SPEAKER_02You should How do you want me to redo this?
SPEAKER_01You could you don't have to redo it, you could just post it as is, bro. What do you want me to say?
SPEAKER_02How am I how am I gonna drum this up?
SPEAKER_01Look, all I'm saying is you could have said something like, Welcome to a very special episode, you know, instead of just being like Welcome to a special presentation. The fucking moment is over. The moment is over.
SPEAKER_02Hey man, the moment's still there, you're ruining it.
SPEAKER_01You're embarrassing me in front of a guest. Okay, okay. You know what? You know what? Sorry, sorry, that's on me. That's on me.
SPEAKER_02Go ahead.
SPEAKER_01Go ahead.
SPEAKER_02Today we are joined by a very special guest who goes by the Twitch name Osha God. Am I saying that correctly? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01You didn't say Osha God, so I did not.
SPEAKER_02Whoa. Whoa, man. People are gonna hear this and they're gonna be like, they're gonna pronounce it wrong because of you now. Bro, I'm the one that's gonna be preconceived notions of how you say Asha's name. That's true. That's true. We are joined by a special guest who goes by Asha God on Twitch. Um, how do you spell that, Asha? Just so people are aware.
SPEAKER_03That is O-S-H-A-G-O-D.
SPEAKER_02Alright, so Asha God is a Twitch streamer. Um, you're a VTuber, correct?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, P G P and Gtuber, VTuber, yeah. We use it interchangeably sometimes, you know.
SPEAKER_01Is but is it interchangeably though?
SPEAKER_03Sometimes like sometimes it depends on the community. Like uh, like I'm part of the Twitch creator clubs, like the VTubers, so yeah, I mean, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Learn something new every day. What is uh what is your specialty for for Twitch? A lot of people have different kinds of things that they do on Twitch, like myself, for example, uh Senor Donut. I am a variety streamer, so I stream a variety of content. What would you say your classification is?
SPEAKER_03Jeez, like now, I mean putting you on the spot. Yeah, so I'm like a Pokemon streamer mostly, you know. Do you like shiny hunting, you know, all that kind of fun stuff, you know. Uh Pokemon games, sometimes variety. Um, gonna be bringing some new stuff soon to the channel, but you know. Ooh, exciting. Yeah. What would you say is your favorite Pokemon game? Gosh, man. Uh, Pokemon Black and White or Pokemon Black and White 2, just Gen 5 as a whole, you know. Geez. Those are pretty solid games.
SPEAKER_01Never played them.
SPEAKER_02Classics.
SPEAKER_00Classics.
SPEAKER_02Classic. Never played them. So today we are joined by Oshagod. Um, they will be joining us for um, I think four episodes. Four episodes total. Four episodes. That's kind of completed. Three random films, and then one final film that none of us have ever seen. And tonight's film is a film from 2024. I believe it was a Hulu release, and um, it didn't go to theaters, it was just a straight Hulu release, but I believe you can watch it on Shutter as well. Um, we are watching the 2024 film Mr. Crockett, which was a recommendation by Asha. And this is you're you're more of a horror viewer, right?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah. So I'm more of a horror viewer. Like, like I don't know, like just I don't know, like just something about them, which is it's not like the scary parts, it's just how they're made and like what they touch base on, like a lot of social issues and things of that nature. So, yeah. Social issues, yes, uh-huh. Lots of social issues, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Really? Yeah, you'd be surprised, man. Horror movies touch on a lot of pretty crazy topics, they deal with some mental health stuff, they deal with a lot of uh things as far as like angst and you know loneliness. Um, you'd you'd be surprised. It's not a fake guy. Uh so you recommend this movie. Um, we finally saw it. Um, this episode's gonna be a little late. I know we have we always try to stick to bi-weekly schedule, and I'm awful at it. Um, I actually had the flu, so I have a excuse this time. Deathly ill, I was bedridden for days. I actually have an excuse for my tardiness this time. Normally it's just I got lazy.
SPEAKER_01It's it's not even that, bro. It's just it's not that. It's scheduling, like you say you're busy, I say I'm busy, you know, ships in the night. And now that we got three people doing the these four episodes, uh, it's gonna be even harder to schedule, you know. That's just the way adulthood is.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. So these next few films are gonna be horror-centric, um, just because Asha prefers horror movies. Um, and I think it's actually cool to kind of have a theme of you know just horror movies, because my brother does not like horror movies, which 100%. I don't understand why. Don't like a lot of them, aren't even that scary.
SPEAKER_01Bro, I can't believe okay. So, first of all, we're starting this movie, we're talking about this movie, right? Mr. Crockett. Mr. Crockett. Yeah, so when you recommended this movie, Asha, I was like, fuck, man, I hate horror movies. I don't want to watch this, it's it's gonna be scary or whatever. Because like, I bro, I get startled whenever Senorita Donut is like right next to me and just taps me on the shoulder gently. She nudges me and I'm like focused on whatever I'm doing. I will go like just startled, just like that. Yeah, it's it's crazy how easily startled I am. So, like horror movies, they're not my thing. I don't like them, I don't like watching them. But uh when you recommended this movie, Asha, I'm I I was like, man, this movie's gonna be scary. I'm gonna, you know, get startled a bunch. And then like the first few minutes of it started, and I was like, oh, this is this is a funny, like campy horror movie. All right, I can fucks with this. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02See, when Asha recommended it, and I I I didn't look anything up, right?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, you're like going into them blind.
SPEAKER_02Exactly. But Asha's words were basically uh how'd you describe it? You you said Mr. Um Rogers, but horror themed.
SPEAKER_03So just kind of touch base on kind of like the background of the film, just kind of kind of kind of looked into looked into it. So the so basically it basically started as a concept, and then it was a feature in a short before it actually became a movie. It was Biceps Halloween on Hulu in 2022. So that's how it started, and then the director brand SB, he um basically he just basically took took a lot of inspiration from Mr. Rogers reading Rainbow and then those Disney sing-alongs that you like back in the day, like you go watching. I love those Disney single ones, and that's what he kind of based it off of. And nice. Um, but but basically the inspiration from it um from the director, um, just reading Rainbow, like I said, and then the premise was um, so the director yelled at his kid for Blippy because he just got tired of Blippy, like just oh fucking blippy, bro.
SPEAKER_01I hate Blippy so much.
SPEAKER_02And then the guy with the beret, right?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, there's been two different iterations of Blippy. There's like Blippy Prime and then fake Blippy.
SPEAKER_03Like, well, there's there's Blippy before Blippy too, but that's that's adult. That's adult thing. Um, but uh yeah, and then I he just was like I think he said he had like a nightmare of like Blippy attacking him for like you know, yelling at his son. He's like, you know, what if Blippy just like attacked me? Like, what if he killed me because of like my son and stuff, and so he took inspiration from that and uh went from there, you know. And then I know Nightmare on Elm Street, you know, some of those classic 80s, you know, films and things of that nature. So yeah. So that's wild. Yeah, so it's like really campy. So it's like Mr. Rogers meets like uh I I don't know, like like like Mr. Rogers basically things like a deal with like the devil kind of kind of thing. That's basically what it is, it's that.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, this movie was pretty interesting because when when it first started, I didn't really know what to expect. And when we first start the movie, just to kind of give viewers a little viewers or listeners an idea of like you know what what we felt the movie starts with like a a child watching TV and they're watching this TV show on VHS, and it's very reminiscent, like at least for me, because it's my generation, right? It's very reminiscent of like Barney. I knew right whereas, yeah. Yeah, whereas like you know, maybe my brother's generation, I don't know Asha how old you are, but maybe you guys get the the Mr. Roger effect of it. And but for me, it was more like a Barney feeling, right? So it's it's really like uh you know, just somebody singing, um talking with a bunch of kids, um, teaching the importance of you know, there's always like a lesson in each episode, right? Yeah, yeah. So we have this kid go to dinner um at the table and he's eating his food, but his dad's a dick because his his kid's not eating, and he's like, Hey, you need to eat, like, but he's being rude about it, and we see Mr. Crockett from a TV screen interact.
SPEAKER_01Hey man, he's being full on, like bro. I was watching that first five minutes and I was triggered immediately.
SPEAKER_03That's that step that energy, bro. That's hell yeah. That's exactly what it was.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, look, man. Keep talking like that. Mr. Crockett's coming for you, you know. Yeah, all right, yeah. But uh, we we you know, we we see what Mr. Crockett's all about, right? Protecting children, like you know, air quotes protecting children.
SPEAKER_01He was protecting children, he protected children from the horrible situation that they were in, right?
SPEAKER_02We see it the entire movie, but in a very intense fashion, right?
SPEAKER_01Right. The fact that these children are brainwashed basically to live in his hell dimension is you know a small price to pay for them to be innocent and not be, you know, fucked with by adults, you know, in the horrible situations that they were in. These kids, these kids were free in the birdcage, you know what I mean.
SPEAKER_02Look, man, all I'm hearing is don't beat your kids.
SPEAKER_01I mean, yeah, yeah, that's 100% the lesson, or Mr. Crockett's gonna come after you.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, treat your kids with respect, you know. Put the respect on their name, man. Come on.
SPEAKER_02I I didn't expect this movie to be like a B tier horror movie when I first heard of it.
SPEAKER_01Bro, this was like a D tier horror movie. What are you talking about?
SPEAKER_02Put some respect on D tier movies, man. No, no, this is like B role horror at its finest.
SPEAKER_01I'm not saying that this movie was bad, all right? I'm not saying that. By saying that it's like a D tier, I'm not saying that it's bad at all. I'm just saying that it's it's super campy, it's not scary. Like it's it's just one of those movies like that you look at and you're like, how the fuck did this movie even get made? Let alone make it to Hulu, who is now owned by Disney Plus. We saw this fucking movie on Disney Plus, bro. Basically, yeah.
SPEAKER_03I mean, yeah, I just I mean, I get the whole concept, like like I don't know, it's just I don't know.
SPEAKER_02Do you do you feel like this movie's very like Evil Dead-esque? At least early Evil Dead.
SPEAKER_01Okay, that's you know, that's an interesting question. Um, we all know that Sam Raimi is a director of the Evil Dead uh series and uh you know a legendary director in their own right. To put to put this movie on the same tier or even in this mentioned in the same breath as Evil Dead is like Hey man, don't be a movie snob. Look people work hard on these films. They they do, they absolutely do, and you could tell that they worked hard on this film with what they had, because what they had was a very shitty script.
SPEAKER_03Like, I yeah, I mean you I mean the mom, the lead mom, like the the mom is like the lead in there, like the probably the best actress out of all of them, like honestly. Like, I like you know, she played like a mom that just got tired of like I don't know if we'll move in more to the plot, but just like I don't know, like you could just tell that she just was getting sick of her son's shit after a while, you know.
SPEAKER_01That's true. So we didn't even we didn't even get into the actors that are in this movie. Yeah, the reason being that all of them are no name actors, basically, right?
SPEAKER_03Yeah for the most part, yes.
SPEAKER_01Have they have they been in anything else? Anything like huge of note or whatever?
SPEAKER_03I I think the lead uh Mr. Crockett's lead that the lead so played someone who played Mr. Crockett, he was involved in one of uh like I think him and like the director had worked together at some point on something. I don't remember.
SPEAKER_02So I'm looking it up. The guy who played Mr. Crockett is named Elvis Nelasco.
SPEAKER_00Yep.
SPEAKER_02Um he he's actually been in quite a few things, nothing really like stand out, but um, it looks like he was in a show called Task that is actually an Apple TV show that's pretty uh getting pretty intense. Okay um they got they got some big names attached to that show, such as Mark Ruffalo. Hold up, the fucking Hulk is in that show with uh Mr.
SPEAKER_01Crockett?
SPEAKER_02Wow. Um I I I think he's the main, like the the probably the biggest name.
SPEAKER_01Um so let me let me clear this up, okay? I am in no way disrespecting the actors that have worked or worked on tiny indie films or anything like that. They're all getting their start, they're all putting their their uh um their licks in, getting their licks in on like getting stuff done and everything, honing their craft. Look, totally get that, understand that, respect it. But all I'm saying, all I'm saying is that a lot of these actors in these movies, uh, this movie specifically, are actors that I've never heard of.
SPEAKER_03So all right, yeah. And I think that's like really interesting. Like I like that about horror as well. Like a lot of the because I watch a lot of the independent stuff as well. So it's like, you know, people you've never seen or heard of, or maybe some actresses that haven't gotten like something in a long time, and they pick up, you know, this nude gig or new role in like a horror movie, and they end up doing great, you know.
SPEAKER_02Look, I think everybody has to start somewhere.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, of course, of course. I'm like I said, I'm not I'm not dogging on anybody because like, bro, we you know, we're we're twitch streamers. We we know that starting at the bottom, you know, like when you have like zero viewers and you're speaking to a room of no one, you know. I know what that's like that that's I mean it's it's the same thing with podcasters, you know. We don't we start with no audience and we we build audience, we build a following, hopefully, and then things either take off or they don't. But right I I understand the struggle. I way understand the struggle. So I'm just saying I respect I respect the actors that are in this movie for the work that they did. And you know, like not not every movie that you act in is gonna be like, you know, it's real to me, damn it. You you gotta kind of play it how how it's written, right?
SPEAKER_02So what you're saying is they can't all be bangers.
SPEAKER_01Yes, that is exactly what I'm saying.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01They can't all be bangers. That fucking line, bro.
SPEAKER_02I I don't I look man, this movie was interesting enough to you know kind of keep with it. I didn't actually feel bored watching this movie.
SPEAKER_01Oh yeah, no, no, I wasn't I wasn't bored watching this movie at all.
SPEAKER_02Like a lot of horror movies are pretty slow, they build on tension and they kind of hope to get you with like the suspense of everything. If you've ever seen like these like you know, I guess top of the line horror movies, a lot of them are super slow because they're building this, you know, this I guess this idea of something grander. So if you've ever seen stuff like hereditary or never saw it, yeah. Things like maybe like talk to me. Never saw it, never saw it, of course. Yeah, uh-huh, but they're slow, they're a lot of buildup, a lot of anxiety-inducing moments.
SPEAKER_03Bro, I'm just gonna leave you guys in this room to make out because I don't know what we need this guy about. These are so good movies, though. They're great. Like, seriously.
SPEAKER_02But that's what I mean by like top of horror, right? Like, these are the when you bring up horror movies, these are the ones people are talking about.
SPEAKER_01So these are the top shelf drinks at the bar behind the counter, exactly.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, these are like like yeah, for like modern, yeah, like midsummer hereditary.
SPEAKER_02Never seen it, never seen it, both directed by the same guy.
SPEAKER_01But would you say that this movie is like the house, the house drink, the house well drink?
SPEAKER_02I don't know what that means.
SPEAKER_01So, you know, like uh you have like a house shot of tequila, like some no-name tequila, basically, instead of getting instead of getting the top shelf, you know, the patron, the the don Julio, uh the sea rock or whatever it's called. The sea rock. I don't know, bro.
SPEAKER_02You you know we can't talk about Sirock on here? Yeah, bring up P. Diddy in this situation.
SPEAKER_01Oh, I forgot that that was his drink. I thought that was Sirock's drink.
SPEAKER_02No, that's uh his bottom.
SPEAKER_01Well, that's what I'm saying. Like you got the you got the top shelf stuff, and then you got the you know, bottom of the like the the $15 with a four dollar save coupon or whatever.
SPEAKER_02Basically the stuff they can bring in by the barrel.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Okay. Would you say that would you say that this movie is is that that level, or would you say that it's lower than that level?
SPEAKER_02No, I think I think there's definitely a place for like B roll horror. Like when you think of certain horror movies, like um, you know, and maybe maybe Asha can chime in on this, you know, because he he watches horror movies, but if you think of stuff like Wes Craven's Nightmare on Elm Street, that is a B role horror film. It's seen as like you know, a pretty well-established film series, but back when it came out, it was low budget, it was not the greatest thing ever.
SPEAKER_03Oh, yeah, like like the ending scene, like the the lady she gets pulled, it's like it was like a blow-up doll just going through the hole. Yeah, like a mailbox hole. Like that's literally who it was.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, that movie, Clive Barker's Hellraiser, another B-roll horror film. These are games that like are pretty big, but when they came out, they were low budget, super low stakes films.
SPEAKER_01So, would you put Puppet Master in that rank too? Yeah, definitely, yeah. Leprechaun?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, oh yeah, for sure.
SPEAKER_01I mean, Leprechaun went to space, he went to the hood, not once, but twice. Yeah, man.
SPEAKER_02I'm gonna say this Jennifer Aniston needed Leprechaun more than Leprechaun needed Jennifer Aniston. Oh, yeah. I'm I'm gonna be honest.
SPEAKER_01Oh my god. I didn't even know that she was in that movie, bro.
SPEAKER_03See that I don't know. Like, I put it above a lot of the stuff that I've seen. Ugh, like uh I think it's called April Fool's Day or April Fool something. Worst film I've ever seen in my life, man. So bad. I've never heard of that. Yeah, I never heard of that. Oh, it's so bad. It is, oh my god.
SPEAKER_01I feel like we should watch it just to make fun of it or whatever. You you yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02See, there's a lot of bad horror out there. I'm sure. I don't think Mr.
SPEAKER_01Crockett's one of them. Nah, nah, I don't think so either. I think I honestly, like, there was a lot of uh okay. I'm gonna give props to the fucking visual effects team that worked on this movie.
SPEAKER_00Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_01Because they did whatever budget they had, they fucking stretched that dollar as far as it would go to make it great.
SPEAKER_03I mean, like uh he told them to basically, he's like, I'm looking for this, this, and this. And I think like the set was like I said, it was like Based off of like Pee-Wee's Playhouse and Yeah, you can see all of those in it. And what I think is really, really interesting and really funny. And I don't know if you've noted you noticed in the film, but uh Mr. Crockett's actor, he requested veneers, and so we put veneers in. He's like he sounds like he has like the the worst lisp of the world. He's got a bunch of gum in his mouth or peanut butter, and it's like so funny.
SPEAKER_01Like it's just yeah, no, I could totally tell. Like, I was like, oh, that's an interesting choice that they made for this demonic, you know, uh abductor of children to give him veneers so that he sounds really silly when he talks.
SPEAKER_02I thought that was just part of the gig. Yeah, I I I thought it was more because like they wanted him to be like a TV host, kind of so he had to be like perfect. Yeah, that's what I thought, but it I mean it makes sense that he would request it. Yeah, yeah. What did you guys think of the you know, quote unquote twist at the end that the person helping the mom find her son again was actually one of the children that Mr. Crockett abducted previously before his death? How did you feel about it?
SPEAKER_01I saw this movie. Did you? I did not. I really I so actually no, that's I think when we were watching this movie, uh, and like they introduced that character that was watching like her go to the crime scene or whatever, like I knew that there was something up with this character, right?
SPEAKER_02Oh, like with the TV screen and stuff, yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Pseudo-polter guy scene. No, no, no, not not that scene, not that scene. The scene where like she uh the the main character, the mom, goes over to see this uh this crime scene of this guy, this uh crackhead that got his head blown up by uh okay by Mr. Crockett, right? So that's going on. Okay, yeah. That's going on, and then they introduce this character who doesn't say anything, he just kind of is in the background and sees what's going on. And when she goes to the library and starts doing research and stuff, uh and finding out who Mr. Crockett is, and this this guy meets her, right? Um, I got an inkling that this that the kid that was abducted and this guy were the same person, but he introduced himself by a different name, right? So I'm like, oh, okay, this is different, right? But then like later on when they started going into it, I totally uh got it. It clicked more for me, especially when you pointed it out, uh Jose. It was just like, yo, that's that's it, that's exactly what it is. And you you called it. You yeah, I think you called two things, you called two things that were immediately like it for this movie. That I was like, damn, dude, you just know you just know the genre, you know.
SPEAKER_02I mean, I've seen a I've seen a movie or two.
SPEAKER_01You've seen a you might say I'm somewhat of a horror buff myself. Um you said you said like watch, I bet this guy is like the kid or whatever that Mr. Crockett abducted, or I or whatever. Uh-huh. And then you said something else, but I don't remember what you said, but it was it was spot on. It was spot on. Like, oh no, no. You said that, like, watch, Mr. Crockett's not even gonna want him anymore because he's an adult or whatever.
SPEAKER_03Yes, yes, uh-huh.
SPEAKER_02That's just creep 101, man. Creep pedo 101.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, that's just I already knew. I mean, that's what he I mean, he he called me, he's like, You're you're an ugly adult, and I don't want you anymore. It's like, you know.
SPEAKER_01Okay, let me ask you another question, though. Let me ask you another question. Do you think that Mr. Crockett was a pedo?
SPEAKER_02No, I don't think so, because there wasn't really any inclination to it.
SPEAKER_01Right? There wasn't. Like, I don't think he he was a pedo at all.
SPEAKER_02But when he said that thing, I was like, okay. This is my most controversial take right now. I might get cancelled. Ooh, let me hear it. Mr. Crockett definitely reminded me of Michael Jackson a little bit. I don't believe Michael Jackson did it, but I can see why people think he did. And that's exactly how I felt about Mr. Crockett.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah. Yeah. I I mean so it's like his whole premise is just like, because he got beat as a child and he ended up killing his dad, like and then he's like, I don't want that for like anybody else. So he was protector. Yeah, he just wanted to protect, but like I can see the whole maybe Michael Jackson kind of esque thing there, you know. But I think a lot of it is like I like I said, like it's like those, it's like that whimsical like background, these kids shows, you know. Read and rainbow. I mean, even even Raid and Rainbow is mentioned in this film. He's like, I don't like that guy, he's like a pansy or whatever, I don't know what he called him. Oh, with the book.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I think he only mentioned him having a book.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. But everybody knew who they were talking about. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And so and I, you know, I it's just it's just like I don't know, it's just that's how he is, man. You can just see the inspirations, you know.
SPEAKER_01This this movie was not scary at all. Even the jump scares weren't scary to me. They were funny, they were they were funny and they were expected. Like nothing in this movie was unexpected that happened. And I think that's the difference between like uh a bee horror movie and a horror movie. Like a bee horror movie knows the trope so well that they play it not for fear, they play it for like comedic payoff. Right. Like, if we go into like you know, uh a movie, uh so we saw uh we saw weapons a while ago, right? Right, right. And there was there was a couple of jump scares in that movie that had me like shh, you know, whooping, you know. Yeah, um, but here's the thing those those jump scares that happened in that movie versus the ones that happened in this movie were built upon the suspense and the way that they paid it off was not this expected way. Like uh the scene where the teacher is like, you know, uh hearing knocking, right? And then uh goes back to lie down after investigating the knocking, and then like lies down and looks up, and the camera gives you the view of what she sees almost immediately. Fucking scared the shit out of me. Um but in in this movie, Mr. Crockett, you know, you know when the jump scare is coming, and you know that it's not gonna be scary because it doesn't do it unexpectedly. It's like it builds up the music, it gives you the close-up of the TV screen, and then fingers, hands come onto the screen. Yeah, right. So yeah.
SPEAKER_02To be honest, though, I feel like when you when you watch horror movies, you kind of expect the jump scares in those movies too.
SPEAKER_01Well, yes, I know, but the thing, the difference between the caliber of movie, right? But between the horror B movie and the horror movie, right, is that the horror movie does the jump scare, but they do it in a either an unexpected way or with some kind of little twist that makes it scary. Whereas the B movie does the same thing, except it doesn't change anything about it and it makes it apparent. So that's that's what I'm saying. This movie is a horror B movie, it can't be uh at points silly, uh, but it's it's not uh it's not playing up the silliness, it's playing up the the horror, the gore aspect of it.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_02Right. I I feel like that kind of happens with most lower budget horror movies, where they they do kind of drum up that you know that that gore aspect, the the shock value, I guess. Um I mean have you guys ever seen Terrifier? Yes, I have not seen Terrifier. I'm not a huge fan of Terrifier, but I have a buddy who loves Terrifier because they they love the gory aspect of those films. And I I can see why some people like it, you know, some people just like the gore of it, they like the the flash, the the because the point of it is just hey, how much more creative can we get with these kills, right? Basically, yeah. So that's the premise of those movies for the most part. And people love it. Some people love it, some people hate it. Um but when you get into like the the B the B-roll horror movies, that's kind of what they are. A lot of them are just kind of doing more of stuff like for shock value, or they're just kind of trying to push the envelope of what they can do, which is why I brought up like you know, like Nightmare on Elm Street and Hellraiser earlier. Because those are very much like that. Where you know, in the past maybe people weren't really making movies like Hellraiser, and then someone did. And now we kind of see a lot of movies like that, but you know, there there always has to be something to start it off. Right.
SPEAKER_01So let me let me ask you this question then. All right, considering we all saw this movie, this is uh Asha, this is your second time watching this movie?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it was my second time, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Okay. So knowing knowing that uh we were watching horror movies, why did you recommend this movie versus any other movie that you could have recommended?
SPEAKER_03Because like I it's just it's not mainstream, like it's not as mainstream as like, oh, let's go see weapons, let's go see, you know, uh Barbarian or uh uh black phone classic.
SPEAKER_02I've never seen them. No, it's I I laughed because he brought up weapons and then Barbarian, which are they're both directed by Zach Krager.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, like you know, or you know, it's not you know, it's not like that, or it's not like the like the conjuring series. It's not like you know, it wasn't it's like a big thing. And I mean, I randomly was like, because I watched uh I watched another per like another contract creator youtuber, uh uh it's like called Dead Meat, and it does like the kill counts and things of different horror movies, and I saw it and I was like, usually like what he does is he's like, I recommend you watch the film and then come watch the kill count so you can because he wants you to experience the movie, you know, as a whole. And I was like, okay, let me watch this movie, and I watched the movie, and I'm like, Okay, let me watch the kill count, because I maybe I didn't understand some things, and it's perfectly just puts all the pieces together, you kind of understand what's going on. And uh, but yeah, the reason why I put it is just like it's not as scary to me. It was not like something that like I don't think would give to me people nightmares, you know, or you know, and I just thought it was really silly and just you know and and I just felt that like you know I don't know, teachers are kind of a lesson in the sense, but not really, you know, like be a better parent, don't be mean to your children, you know. Like be nice to them because you know, one day, you know, you they may put you in a home, you know, and like you just don't like it's like today, like you know, like society today, like a lot of people don't talk to their parents, you know, or they don't talk to their family members, they cut them off because they're toxic, you know, or they did these bad things in their childhood that was shown here. I mean, you know, it's not it wasn't uncommon in the 90s, which is what it would when it took place to like this things like this would happen, you know. Like the common child, you know, it's like common child abuse, normal things that they're not normal now today, you know. So it's a lot of that, you know. Like, I don't know. That's that's why I like it. It just kind of teaches a lesson, and then it's also kind of silly and funny. And I like the I kind of like the gore a little bit or the kills a little bit too, you know, they're kind of nice, you know, like the bubble with the crackhead guy turned his gun to like a bubble-blowing thing and blew his head up, you know.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, let's let's talk a little bit about the different deaths that we saw in this movie. Yeah. So the first death that we saw had a guy uh get get his. So this was the beginning scene, right? Where we knew where the first five minutes of this movie where I knew this movie was not going to be scary, but kind of silly, you know. Uh, it's this deadbeat uh stepdad who is telling this kid to eat his food because you know he's ungrateful, blah blah blah blah, yelling at him, calling him names, and you know, Mr. Crockett hears him and comes out of the TV or whatever, uh, and then uh tells him to eat his food. Except uh he puts the stepdad in like this chair that has uh, I guess, sharp tentacles. Um and then you know, that straps him down, and then he cuts his his stomach open because the guy refuses to eat this plate of food, and this plate of food is nasty as hell, worms, like just putrid, disgusting, like and he's like, eat your food, and like he won't eat his food. So he cuts the guy's stomach open, he shoves this grossness into his belly, and that's how the guy, you know, is is killed, right? The next guy uh is the the bubble gun guy that uh that you just explained, Asha. Yeah, um, and then there's another uh there's another guy that um is is not shown on screen when he's killed. Um but I guess oh, it was a it was a game of hangman that they were playing. Uh the clues, uh the visual clues that the scene painted was that there was uh a game of hangman, and because the word wasn't guessed, this guy had his appendages torn off, I guess.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Um and then and then finally the the last guy got eaten by a a bear demon thing, I guess.
SPEAKER_03The blue guy, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. So uh all all of these uh all of these deaths, uh except for you know one of them were uh very grotesque looking in terms of how it was executed, especially the first one for me. Um but then like you have the main character, the mom, I forgot her her name is the actress as well. Um you have her uh looking for her son, and she finds the kids, goes into the hell dimension through um you know getting his magical marker and then you know going into the dimension, and uh it's the whole plot is very convoluted and very um stupid, if I if I can say that. Like, you know, you have you have this uh woman who has turned into a tran the so the mom at the very beginning of the movie when she witnesses the stepdad getting killed and comes in to see what all the racket is and finds her stepson or her stepdad or her partner killed and her son gone, um, is turns into a homeless woman who has been following uh Mr. Prockett and doing you know things. Doing things, is that you? Yeah, sorry. She's drinking water, man. Yeah. Gotta gotta damn dog. Damn. Anyways, anyways, um you have uh see, I fucking lost my train of thought. God damn. Uh oh, she so she turns she turns into a transient and is like following Mr. Crockett and try and like somehow she gets the ability to lock into his TV hell frequency, and she's able to sense where he's gonna go next. And it's like, what the fuck were you smoking to come up with this plot, bro?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I I mean it was it was a good I mean, it's a good thing. I mean, so she spent a whole year trying to look for her son, man. Like that, like the first between the first and the first scene and like you know, the whole funeral with you know major, you know, more like a he's a minor, but major.
SPEAKER_01Uh oh yeah, his name was Major.
SPEAKER_03He's a minor, but he's major. And like just from that scene, it was like a you know, a whole year, and then like you know, and you know, and then the viewer knows, like, as soon as like like one of those like uh what is it called? Community libraries, you know I'm talking about it would people know what I'm talking about. Little community libraries, you'd see like a post, you put like a book in there, you rent the book out, put it back in, you know, type of thing.
SPEAKER_02Is that how libraries work? It's the little ones that you have in front of your house.
SPEAKER_01You don't talk about it. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. The top is that, you know, the little corner libraries that yeah, take a book, leave a book, place. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah. So that's how you know when he was he's he's you know, he's he's coming, you know, he's coming to your your household with his tape that looks I I don't know. And to me, I I I just think that that that Mr. Crockett's like his program is a little too little too baby-ish, I guess, for Major. I don't know. I it it I don't know. He seemed like he's more instead of I mean he's at the funeral, he's he's with this game gear or whatever the hell it is. Yeah, bro, that was a Sega Game Gear that he had. Sega Game Gear, you know, dad's in the coffin, just laying there, and he's just playing the game.
SPEAKER_01Hey, kids deal with uh kids deal with death in different ways, bro. How dare you judge a child for like, you know, you know, playing his his Sega Game Gear or his Sega Nomad and just like not locking in to his dad's funeral, you know?
SPEAKER_03I don't know. I can see that for Peapa's funeral, but daddy's funeral? I don't know about that. You know, I'm sorry. Oh my god.
SPEAKER_02If I'm being honest, kind of to the point you you made uh earlier, when I saw that mom and she was like locking into the TV screens, that's how I knew when that guy came in and he's like, I'm looking for my daughter. No, you're not. You don't do the same thing she does, you're a liar.
SPEAKER_03You didn't do it the right way, yeah.
SPEAKER_01But I mean, come on, bro. What would be your fucking thought? Like, if you had a kid and they were taken by this TV guy, your you your first thought would be like, yo, I need to lock into this TV demonic frequency so that I can find my child. That would be your first fucking thought.
SPEAKER_02No, but she she had been at it for a while. So I I feel like she just you know had some insider knowledge after some time. But you know it's crazy. How could she do that? But that guy who's been looking for him like half his life didn't know where to start.
SPEAKER_01I mean, another one of those famous uh plot holes, you know.
SPEAKER_02Because he was a man, dude. It's because he was a man, he didn't know what to do. Women get stuff done. Yeah, it's true. When they're when their kid is at danger, they get stuff done. The guys just don't know where to start. Nah. Alright. Unless you're a Liam Neeson.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_02If you watch Taken, you he knows where to start. He knows where to start. Look.
SPEAKER_01What do you what do you uh I Asha, you've you've not been on our podcast before, so yeah, we have a very different rating system than like you know, three stars, four stars, whatever.
SPEAKER_02Uh huh.
SPEAKER_01We give it three big booms. Fuck you, dude. I hate you so much.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I do. He hates that, man. I know I know.
SPEAKER_01Fucking guy. Look, all right, we have a different rating system. Right. Like, hey, you need to either buy this movie immediately and keep it in your collection. You should rent this movie. Uh, or you should watch it on streaming, or you should not watch this movie at all.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Right? Um, and the very rare, like, hey, you should watch this movie in theaters if you ever get a chance, which is like the top tier.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Um, what would you what would you rank this movie out of those uh four slash five categorizations?
SPEAKER_00Hmm.
SPEAKER_01Uh like a completely objective, like looking at everything that we've discussed. There is no right answer. There is no right answer.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. I mean, I wouldn't say theaters because it didn't technically come into theaters, and I don't think it's something that if it did go into theaters though, would you watch it? If I saw some commercials for it, maybe. Maybe, but I don't know. Like, I was I don't know about okay. I'm gonna I'm sure I'm assuming you're basing this off of like blockbuster, like renting, right? Like you're not block okay. Yeah, that. Yeah, definitely rent it from Blockbuster, you know. That that's something I would give it at least that.
SPEAKER_01So this would be like a Friday night rental for you. Like long day, long week. It's a it's a blockbuster night. You're getting the popcorn and the candy.
SPEAKER_03Your boss, you know, your boss treats you like crap at the end of the day, you're just ready to just crack a cold one. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah. Definitely.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, all right, all right. What what what about you? What do you done that? All right. How would you how would you go about this with your rating?
SPEAKER_01Uh I would say wait for this movie to be on streaming. You don't need to pay for this movie by itself to watch it. Like, yeah, was I entertained? Yes, I was entertained, I was engaged with this movie. I had laughs, I had questions. Um, I enjoyed watching this movie with you guys. Uh, I had a good time. Like, I would say this would be a good fun buddy movie to watch, you know, just to like, you know, yo, what do you want to do? Yo, we can play some board games. Nah, man, I don't want to play board games. We do that all the time. Let's do something else. Let's watch a movie. All right, sure. Yeah, let me get some popcorn. We're good. I'll order a pizza. Hell yeah. All right, that's that's the night. Yeah. You know?
SPEAKER_02What about you, bro? Right? I you know what? I I'm gonna agree with Asha. I would say I would rent this.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02I I know you didn't like it as much as maybe Asha and I did, but I think it's a pretty solid just B tier horror movie. If you're gonna sit down and you know, watch a movie with somebody, maybe just relax. I would put it on. It's not really, you know, it's not like a high-stakes movie, it's very low stakes. You can just watch it. You don't have to focus too hard on it. Um, which for some people that's nice. I know we've talked in the past about how like people passively watch movies, and it's one of my biggest pet peeves, but I definitely feel this is one of those passive watches for some people. Okay. Um, so I would rent it. I I had fun with it.
SPEAKER_01Okay, that's respectable. So that's uh that's Mr. Crockett. That's that's the movie that that we saw this uh this time around, thanks to Ashagad uh uh suggestion. Uh what movie is next?
SPEAKER_02I don't know because I forgot your choice.
SPEAKER_01So my choice is a movie that is called One Hour Photo, and it is a suspense horror movie, I would classify it as that stars Robin Williams.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, that's all I know about it. Does he not know how to develop photos?
SPEAKER_01This is this is a movie set back in the day, bro. I know.
SPEAKER_02If it takes them an hour, I don't know if they know how to develop photos.
SPEAKER_03Well, that's how it takes to develop a photo, you know. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02I mean, I don't think I've developed photos with vinegar, it didn't take an hour.
SPEAKER_03What well you're paying for the experience, you know. Of waiting at Walmart, you're waiting for to develop photos.
SPEAKER_02Hey man, if you go into a dark room to develop photos, you're you're spending like 15 minutes max in there. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Hey man, I know nothing about developing photos, but all I know is that if you are developing a role of photos, like 6060 photos, right?
SPEAKER_02Alright, you know what? That's fair. You might you might take a while.
SPEAKER_01It might take a while. So, you know, one photo, sure, but like, you know, however many clicks are on a Kodak camera or whatever from back in the day, like one hour photo, that's like that's that's the stuff. That's that's what you that's what you did. That's fair. So this movie is a suspense horror movie that stars Robin Williams in a non-comedic role. Um so yeah. Uh I saw it a long time ago, and I was like, you know what? I I'm gonna I'm gonna show up to this this horror thriller suspense, you know, cookout, and I'm gonna bring something I'm gonna bring something for the boys to feast on.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And that was my choice.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. So then that will be our next movie. Yeah. Unless you want to watch my choice afterwards. Which is which was um Annabelle Creation.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I'm not about I'm not about doll horror stuff. I hate doll horror stuff.
SPEAKER_02I chose a movie that is a little more on the horror side. It is kind of um I I would say overrated as far as horror films go. Um, just because the conjuring universe as a whole is pretty overrated to a lot of people. Um, but I would definitely say Annabelle Creation and the first conjuring movie are definitely like top-of-the-line horror films from this generation.
SPEAKER_01In my opinion. Would you would you agree with that, Asha?
SPEAKER_03I I would say maybe I I wasn't the newer generation, but the one like maybe below it. Not like I won't say early 2000s, but like 2010s, like 2010s.
SPEAKER_02Around there.
SPEAKER_032020 to 2020s and stuff like that. Like, I I mean I don't yeah, I mean, I guess it is kind of newer too, because like they're gonna make another one, you know, but they had this one, the newer one last last year, yeah. So the new contract last year. So yeah, I mean new generation, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Okay, okay. Uh so it's either gonna be one of those movies. Uh I guess tune in next time to find out until the next random rental.
